Local organization, Michael’s HOPE (Heroin and Opiate Prevention Education), hosted a discussion with students regarding the dangers of drugs and alcohol, provided support for people affected by addiction and encouraged awareness.

A Buddy for Buddy By: Jamie Lynn Ryan
Readers have been writing in lately, inquiring as to my whereabouts, my wellbeing, my latest exploits… So I’m here, as requested, to fill you all in on my comings and goings – well, as much as one can come and go in the confines of a one-gallon aquarium, but you know… The latest bit of exciting news – potentially, anyway – is my Human’s impending purchase of a friend for me! Yes, that’s right, Buddy the Betta will soon be accompanied by the likes of a small, colorful (but not too colorful), aquatic snail. I’m thinking purple, to
complement my gorgeous aqua fins. The best part is that, in addition to having a companion for those ohso-long days when my Human leaves me to my own devices, my new little friend can also serve as a portable vacuum cleaner of sorts. With my larger residence, the maintenance can be a bit much, and I do like immaculate living quarters. I’ve even picked out a name – “Squeegee.” Oh what fun we will have together, so long as he keeps those long tentacles off my delicate fins, of course... and away from my food… and off of my favorite bedtime leaf… and, well, we’ll see how it
goes. This could be shortlived. Other than that, life in the bowl is pretty much status quo. I’m going on 15 months old, still as vibrant and beautiful (and humble) as ever, and my Human has graduated to feeding me twice a day – small portions, but still, I’ll take what I can get. It’s a good life – especially when Grammy comes to visit and makes kissy-faces at me. ‘Til next time, this is Buddy, anxiously awaiting the arrival of my new googly-eyed roommate. Gelinas Junior High School’s Science Olympiad team is once again headed to the National Competition after earning first place at the New York State Science Olympiad Tournament in East Syracuse-Minoa High School this spring. This tournament, which will be held at the University of WisconsinStout in May, will include the top 60 teams in the country in each division. On April 13th, the Brookhaven Youth Bureau teamed-up with the Highway Department’s Division of Traffic Safety to host the most well attended Teen Distracted Driving Program in the Town’s history. The goal of the program is to make our roadways safer and prevent bad habits before they begin. Approximately 150 new drivers, parents and guardians received critical information outlining just how dreadful driving while impaired and distracted
can be. Nationwide, motor vehicle crashes are the number one cause of death in young people between the ages of 16 and 24, and Suffolk County has the highest teen fatality rate in New York State. According to research conducted by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, distraction was a factor in nearly six out of ten moderate to severe teen crashes. “Video evidence from our recent study on teen distracted driving shows the problem
is much worse than we thought,” said Robert Sinclair, manager of media relations for AAA Northeast. “Our research found the most common forms of distraction to be cell phone use, looking at someone in the vehicle, looking at something outside the vehicle, singing, grooming, and reaching for an object. We hope knowledge of these dangerous situations can be used to help teen drivers become safer behind the wheel,” said Sinclair.

W.S. Mount Elementary School students and staff members focused on the importance of making healthy life choices during a special presentation from the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin. During the event, the school’s fourth- through
sixth-graders received yellow T-shirts and learned about the AAPI’s Childhood Obesity Awareness Campaign. Guest speakers Dr. Abhay Malhotra and Dr. Vaijinath Chakote, president of the AAPI of Queens and Long Island, spoke with the students about how they can work
to incorporate healthy meal choices into their daily routines. The group discussed what portion of a plate should be comprised of fruits and vegetables and the diseases that can stem from obesity. Following the assembly, the students participated in a fun run on the backfields.

MICHAEL’S HOPE - Miller Place High School students recently learned about drug awareness and substance abuse through real-life accounts from past users and a mother whose son died from a drug overdose. Local organization, Michael’s HOPE (Heroin and Opiate Prevention Education), hosted a discussion with students regarding the dangers of drugs and alcohol, provided support for people affected by addiction and encouraged awareness.
INSTALLATION & AWARDS - On April 30th, the Ridge Fire Department’s Annual Installation and Awards Dinner was held at Atlantis Marine World in Riverhead. At the event, the outgoing officers were thanked for their service and department members were presented with awards.
Three Village Central School District’s Mock Trial team continues to set new records and is now bound to defend their skills on the state level as they compete at the New York State Championship in Albany this May 15th-17th. The team earned this coveted chance after winning the Suffolk County Regional Championship, where they out performed
30 teams. The relatively young team has only been in the competition circuit for the past two years, and last year advanced to the state finals finishing fourth overall. To prepare for the season, the ninth through 12th-grade students have been working with coach Douglas Elliot and local attorneys Joe Prokop and Ted Rosenberg since early fall.
“The team has invested an extraordinary amount of time, learning and energy to perform at this level,” said Mr. Elliot. “We are still a developing program, but we are proud to be counted among the top programs in a very competitive county. We have tried to create our own style of argument and performance; so far it has worked.”
Green for the Challenge Three Village Central School District’s elementary schools teamed up to compete in a Waste Free Day challenge in celebration of Earth Day. The schools worked to reduce the amount of waste collected during each of the school’s lunch periods.
Students and staff were encouraged to bring lunch in reusable containers and limit the amount of utensils and paper goods used during the mealtime. The winner of the first ever challenge was Arrowhead Elementary School, which reduced its

Two Edna Louise Spear Elementary School Math Olympiad teams, made up of 10 fourth- and fifth-graders, displayed their math smarts at the ninth annual Suffolk County Elementary Math Tournament on May 2nd at Stony Brook University. During the tournament,
Five students in the Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) Islip Career Center’s Supermarket Warehouse Occupations Program completed their learner’s permit training and passed the New York State Learner’s Permit Test in the comfort of their classroom. Teacher Ken Able was encouraged by Principal Pete LePore to “think out of the box” and find ways to include training and testing skills that would lead to employment for the special career education students. Abel said, “Students obtain the skills that lead to employment but they need transportation to get to the job.” With permission from the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (NYSDMV), Abel started a NYS learner’s permit training and testing program in his class. Students sit at a computer in the classroom which links to the NYSDMV
online test. Three months ago, Matthew, a Comsewogue UFSD student, secured employment at Uncle Giuseppe’s in Port Jefferson. Matthew has an entry level position. He does parking lot maintenance, collects carts, and helps people find things in the store. He found the job on SnagAJob.com and completed an online application. “We looked for a job related to the skills he is learning in the Supermarket Warehouse Occupations Program,” said Abel. Matthew’s mom drives Matthew and picks him up from work. Matthew has his learner’s permit and will be taking his road test in April. He said, “I like working at Uncle Giuseppe’s. I’m nervous about taking my driving test. I hope I pass. It will make it easier if I can drive myself to work.” Matthew has another goal, to obtain a forklift certification, which is also offered in Abel’s class. “I

Jones Beach Air Show Bethpage Federal Credit Union and the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation are very pleased to announce the star-studded final lineup for the 2016 Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach taking place Memorial Day Weekend on Saturday, May 28th and Sunday, May 29th, from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. For the first time, three jet teams will perform at the Bethpage Air Show including show headliners, the legendary United States Navy Blue Angels, returning to the Bethpage Air Show for their seventh performance during their 70th anniversary season. The U.S. Navy Blue Angels will give the final performance of the show at approximately 2 p.m. The Royal Canadian Air Force Snowbirds will be making their 3rd performance at the Bethpage Air Show where they will perform over 50 different formations and maneuvers for fans. The last of the three jet teams to perform is the Breitling
Jet Team, the world’s elite professional civilian jet aerobatics team, returning to Long Island for their second consecutive performance following a successful performance last year. The new United States Air Force F-35 Lightning II, the world’s most advanced multi-role fighter aircraft, will also perform at the Bethpage Air Show for the first time in its inaugural year its F-35 Heritage Flight performance. The F-35 Heritage Flight performance will feature the F-35 flying alongside WWII, Korean and Vietnam-era aircraft in a dynamic display of our nation’s air power history. With a top speed of 1,200 mph, the F-35 is capable of setting off sonic booms as it did this past January for all of the East Coast to experience! Other star-studded performers at this year’s Bethpage Air Show include the United States Army Golden Knights Parachute Team, performing in their 12th Bethpage Air Show; legendary air show pilot
Sean Tucker performing in his custom-built Oracle Challenger II biplane; extraordinary aerobatic pilot Matt Chapman; the John Klatt Airshows – Jack Links’ Screamin’ Sasquatch Jet Waco Aerobatic Team; the world famous GEICO Skytypers and their flight squadron of six vintage WWII aircraft; the American Airpower Museum Warbirds; Long Island’s own David Windmiller; the Air Combat Command F-16 Viper Demonstration Team; our hometown, 106th Air Rescue Wing will show their support by performing a HC130 and HH-60 flyby demonstration; and new for 2016, the SUNY Farmingdale State College Flying Rams who will fly seven of their 22 collegeowned aircraft in a flyby piloted by their top academic professional pilot performers. “This year’s 2016 Bethpage Air Show is one of, if not the best, schedule of performers we have ever seen in the history of the Bethpage Air Show at Jones
