Timeless I recently celebrated my twelve-year anniversary of working here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers. How quickly time does ﬂy. I can’t say I recall the exact start date of any previous jobs; but this one happened to coincide with my grandmother’s birthday, and so it was instantly commemorated for being just a bit more special. Bittersweet, perhaps, since her passing… but May 2nd shall always hold a place in my heart. It’s funny how we place such importance on certain dates, knowing full well that each subsequent year will bring with it an entirely different set of emotions and circumstances; in effect, no two anniversaries will ever be the same, whether it be of the celebratory or the solemn

sort. Expectations rarely hold up to the standards we have imposed. If you had asked me twelve years ago what I would be doing in the year 2017, I can’t say I would have pinpointed my current situation for what it is; nor would I have had any real inkling as to what would transpire in the decade to come. There is something to be said for longevity, to be sure. As long as you are able to find fulfillment in your daily life, who’s to say what you “should” be doing at any stage? Only you. The calendar is merely a guideline, a means of breaking up the years into more manageable chunks of time by which to take a step back and evaluate. One day at a time, that’s about all most

of us can handle. Some will be good, some bad; but in the end, they will steer your life in a particular direction. That, you can be sure of. Who knows what the next twelve years might bring. Maybe I’ll be writing my 1000th column for South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers. Perhaps I’ll be taking photos as I journey from one corner of the world to another, journaling as I travel to undiscovered lands. Or maybe, I’ll have gotten all that out of my system and decided to settle down in a house in the suburbs with the white picket fence. Who knows. In the meantime, another May 2nd has come and gone, very different from the last and most likely nothing like the next. Only time will tell.

On Tuesday, June 13th, the American Heart Association will be hosting its 29th annual Golf Classic-A Joel Hamroff Memorial Tribute at the Meadow Brook Club in Jericho and the Piping Rock Club in Locust Valley. Event Chair, Steven Yanofsky, Parts Authority, Inc., LLC along with the corporate and community leadership of Long Island will be participating to increase awareness of the importance of physical activity. Councilwoman Jane Bonner, a co-sponsor of the Hope Walk for Addiction, has announced that the event raised $35,573 to benefit Hope House Ministries in Port Jefferson for the work that they do to help fight drug and alcohol abuse. The walk/rally, held at the Cedar Beach Nature Walk in Mount Sinai, was organized by Bill Reitzig, in memory of his son Billy who tragically passed away from a first time heroin overdose at 25 years young. He lit up the room with his positive energy, persuading all the students to participate in a variety of interactive activities. He asked the students to pledge participation in the group games, even if they felt awkward and silly, because

‘we will all do it together and we will all feel awkward together like one, big, awkward, silly Islip Career Center family.’ They got to know each other through a game Martin devised. Everyone formed a circle and one-byone each student said their name, everyone responded and said “Hi,” then the student shared what they liked to do, and the group said “Nice.” It was an icebreaking activity that served to introduce the students to each other and pay compliments. Martin said, “Kindness is a behavior that we all need to practice. Recognizing a person and affirming what they said is important and kind.”

Sixth grade students from the Jefferson Academic Center paid tribute to Earth Day by volunteering their time and energy at a local garden. Special Education Teacher Anna Cuevas said, “We offered our services and volunteered to help beautify the Port Jefferson Village Center garden.” Students weeded the garden, and planted seeds and ﬂowers. Cuevas said the students would monitor the garden on a regular basis to see how the

fixtures with energy efficient LED lighting on the first ﬂoor of Town Hall. All together, the Town has upgraded a total of 2166 lighting fixtures at Town Hall with rebates totaling $183,746. All installations were handled by the Town Hall Engineering Department. The upgrade is part of Supervisor Romaine’s

“Energy Efficiency and Sustainability Initiative,” part of a 5-year Capital Plan to achieve a 50% reduction of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions by 2020. The plan focuses on Town-owned Buildings and Facilities, Traffic Controls, Street Lights and Town Vehicles.

a variety of activities including writing poems and delving into science activities to learn and understand plant growth and development. *The academic program at the Jefferson Academic Center is available to special education and nonclassified “at risk” students who require an alternate approach to learning. The students have moderate to severe learning disabilities, and Autism Spectrum disorders.

Teaming Up Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk and future Habitat homeowners will work alongside Lowe’s volunteers and additional all-female construction crews for Habitat for Humanity’s 10th annual National Women Build Week from May 6th-14th. Habitat’s National Women Build Week invites women to help make a difference and devote at least one day to help build decent and affordable housing in their local communities. More than 17,000 women, including Lowe’s Heroes volunteers, are expected to volunteer at construction sites across the country as part of Habitat’s 2017 National Women Build Week. Habitat Suffolk has a multitude of construction events planned throughout the week including women volunteer groups from Advantage Title, PSEG LI, Zebra Technologies, Line Dancers from Stylin’ Gang, United Way Women, as

well as groups of friends and individual build participants. The week of community service will culminate with a special Girl Scout MotherDaughter Build Day taking place the day before the Mother’s Day holiday. Lowe’s helped launch National Women Build Week in 2008 to empower women to advocate for affordable housing and spotlight the homeownership challenges faced by many. Each year, Lowe’s provides the support of their employee volunteers, Lowe’s Heroes, and conducts how-to clinics at stores to teach volunteers construction skills so they can feel equipped to take part in the builds. Habitat Suffolk staff and volunteers will join women across the country to help build decent, affordable housing on Long Island as part of National Women Build Week. “Through our

partnership with Habitat and support of National Women Build Week, Lowe’s empowers women to get involved in their communities, learn construction skills and make a meaningful impact,” said James Frison, Lowe’s director of community relations. “We’re grateful to all the women on Long Island who will volunteer this week to help build and repair decent and affordable housing.” Habitat’s first Women Build event was held in 1998. Suffolk County Legislators presented the legislature’s Employee Excellence Award to three employees for their outstanding efforts at their April 25th, 2017 meeting; two from the Suffolk County Department of Law, Division of Risk Management and one from the Department of Information Technology. Michele H. Johannsen of Farmingville and Jenine M. Vella of Sound Beach were nominated by County Attorney Dennis Brown and Leslie Baffa, Director of Risk Management for implementing the inhouse Risk Management Complaint System as co-captains. Marc Perez, Senior Programmer Analyst, was nominated by Department of Information Technology Commissioner Scott Mastellon for his management and execution of the County’s web development. “We are pleased to recognize three more

Opening Pitch The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Program is the recipient of a grant from Kat’s Ribbon of Hope (KROH) that will allow the program to expand its services for bilingual social work/ patient navigation at local hospitals. Kat’s Ribbon of Hope, Inc., established in 2013, provides financial assistance to women who otherwise would not be able to afford early detection and treatment services for breast cancer. These women die at twice the rate of those who can afford medical attention. Currently bilingual social workers/patient navigators from the Adelphi Program meet with patients immediately following their breast

cancer diagnosis at Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC). These staff members provide on-going support and follow patients through diagnosis and treatment including surgery, chemotherapy, radiation and reconstruction. The program at NUMC addresses disparities in mortality by providing psychosocial support, counseling, patient navigation and concrete services to underserved patients with breast cancer. The funds received from KROH have enabled the breast cancer program to hire a second parttime bilingual social worker/patient navigator. Additionally, in June, the program will begin Spanish

language support groups at community centers for patients and their families. “Kat’s Ribbon of Hope is very proud to continue our collaboration with the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program by funding an additional patient navigator to help serve the many women and men in the community facing breast cancer,” says Despina Yarian, cofounder and chair of KROH. The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program, established in 1980, offers free emotional support and information to people coping with cancer. The hotline can be reached at 800.877.8077.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone recently threw out the first pitch at the Long Island Ducks first home game of the season against the New Britain Bees. For the third year in a row, the home opener kicked off Suffolk County’s “Heroes of the Game” program, where a local veteran or active duty service member is honored during a live in-game tribute for their dedication

and service to our country. The “Hero of the Game” who was honored during the home opener was Anthony Dellvalle, who served in both the U.S. Army and U.S. Navy from 1986-2001. Anthony is currently a member of the American Legion and also assists veterans with the filing of disability claims and obtaining benefits. Veterans and active duty personnel can register to
