Traumatic Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Down Syndrome, Spina Bifida, Genetic Disorders and Emotional Disturbances. Every day, they have a different school drop off children at their location to benefit from their organization; they also offer group programs, individual lessons, corporate workshops and a program specifically designed for military members. Volunteers are the backbone of PalO-Mine, and there are many different ways to get involved. All volunteers must be at least 16 years of age, attend a volunteer orientation (orientations are held monthly), complete a training program and be available to volunteer a minimum of four hours per week. Some ways you may volunteer are: working directly with children and adults in lessons, working with therapy horses and performing barn chores, fundraising, and helping with property enhancement and landscaping. Hot ‘n Cold ’Tis time for a bit of this and that, a collection of random thoughts and musings collected over time and compiled for your reading pleasure - or displeasure, as the case may be. But seriously, I do hope you’ll indulge this meandering assortment of musings. How about this weather? After waiting for what has seemed like months for spring to arrive - oh, wait… - it appears the season of growth has finally taken up residence over the shores of Long Island. Some might even go so far as to say time has fast forwarded right into summer; but we can be sure to experience a few more chilly days before it’s safe to put the jackets away for good. ’Til then, best to keep those flip flops on stand-by. There will be plenty of time for bare feet and bathing suits in the months to come. In the meantime, the trees have begun to explode with blossoms, and everyone is busy sprucing up their gardens - or, in my case, balcony - with the latest annuals. Year after year, I am struck by
all the pretty perennials at the nursery, and wind up purchasing far too many tulips, daffodils and hyacinths for someone who has nowhere for them to permanently reside. This year, I “scaled back” the floral collection; but still, as we speak, several tulip plants have already bloomed past their expiration and are in desperate need of a home for the offseason. What can I say? I’m a sucker for spring. I tend to have the same unhealthy obsession when it comes to indoor decor, as I have amassed quite the array of seasonal knick knacks, wreaths and doormats. As soon as the months transition, there I am, back up on the step stool, peering into the infamous “Christmas Closet” for signs of the many spring, summer and autumn accents I have accumulated over the last five years. Back in March, I realized that, with the exception of Easter decorations, I am seriously lacking in anything not resembling a bunny, chick or egg. Were my apartment able to hold one more thing, I’d say it was time
for a small spring shopping spree; but alas, it cannot. Well… maybe just one more thing. Speaking of decor, my little finned friend, Norton von Spudley - “Spud,” “Norty,” “Baby Betta Extraordinaire” - seems to be flourishing in his bowl on my desk at home, nestled under “his” desk lamp and next to a rather striking likeness of himself in the form of a blown glass ornament. Often, I find him staring intently at the little turquoise fish in the hand-painted ball, as if pleading with it to come out and play. Nearly 18 monthsold, my Norty seems to be enjoying his time as my companion, which he expresses daily by trying to devour my finger as I sprinkle crushed pellets into his bowl. Table manners are not a strong point. And that’s the way it stands in this second week of May, hovering on the brink of summer while shaking off the winter doldrums that have engrossed us for the last several months - the happy medium, if you will, of weather. Enjoy it while it lasts. This, too, shall pass.

Lisa Gatti is the CEO & Founder of PalO-Mine Equestrian, Inc., a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations. Through persistence, hard work and a passion to serve others, Lisa opened Pal-O-Mine in 1995 as a 501(C)(3) non-profit. Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week - and they continue to grow today! This organization sits on eight acres, with a 20-stall barn, handicapped accessible bathrooms, a new 100’ x 120’ indoor arena with state-of- theart footing and a rider hoisting system, and three outdoor riding arenas. They help an unbelievable amount of people, and their work is truly heartwarming. Individuals of all ages are welcome to take part in the programs they offer. They operate with five full-time employees, 35 independent contractors and 80 volunteers a week. Their riding instructors have experience with the following diagnoses: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Sensory Processing Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Neurological Disorders, Cerebral Palsy,

Remaining Mindful Sixth-grade students in Patricia Woods’ class at Minnesauke Elementary School in the Three Village Central School District participated in a series of activities geared toward mindfulness training. Mindfulness is defined as paying attention to the present moment on purpose and with kindness. Overwhelming research is proving mindfulness practice as an effective
method to reduce stress, anxiety and improve executive function and attention. With the assistance of parent volunteer and trained mindfulness educator Jessica Ciardullo, the students learned calming breathing techniques, how to stay in the moment, approach test taking more clear-headed and many other mindful approaches to living.
Additionally, the students created glitter bottles. When shaken, the bottles showed how minds clutter when one is stressed. When the glitter settled, it represented how much clearer ones thoughts are when allowed to slow down, breathe and recognize intrusive thoughts but not allow them to consume us.

Earning Top Honors
Rocky Point High School’s Math Team placed second in their division during this year’s Suffolk County Math Teachers Association math league.
The team earned the honor based on their overall league rank of 16 out of 84. Additionally, senior Jade Pinkenburg was named an overall top scorer for the 2017-2018
year. “I am very proud of my team they worked so hard this year and absolutely deserve this recognition,” said math team adviser Janece Guerra.

Creating Memories
A group of juniors in Gregory Armine’s drawing and painting class at Rocky Point High School joined by seniors from Seth Meier’s Advanced Placement Studio Art class created very special portraits for Syrian children living in refugee camps. The Memory Project, which is a Wisconsin-based organization, asks young
artists from around the world to create portraits for children who are living in improvised areas of the world. The joy that is brought to these children as they receive their portraits is a wonderful thing to watch and can be watched in a video produced by the Memory Project staff. “This is something that the junior students of
the art department have been doing for the last three years,” said Mr. Armine. “The current senior class that participated last year enjoyed the experience so much that they decided to do it again this year. We look forward to making this a Rocky Point tradition, teaching our students how their talents can bring joy to others in the world.”

Robotics Takes on Regionals
Three Village Central School District’s Ward Melville High School robotics team – the Ward Melville Iron Patriots – recently competed in the 2018 FIRST Robotics competition.
After three grueling days of battle, the Iron Patriots made it all the way to the final competition and emerged as second-place winners. “This is an amazing accomplishment for a team
that only existed for two years,” said Principal Dr. Alan Baum. “Needless to say, we are extremely proud of all of our team members for an astounding season.”

Each of these teams earned the opportunity to advance following the FIRST LEGO League SBPLI Long Island Championship at Longwood High School on March 4th.
FIRST® Tech Challenge Team #5477, “Innovo” from Hewlett; Team #4137, the “Island Bots” from East Setauket; and Team #9421 the “Hydrofluoric Robotics” from Greenlawn; each competed at the FIRST Tech Challenge SuperRegional Championship in Scranton, Pennsylvania, March 16th-18th. These teams earned the chance to compete at that post-season event following the FIRST Tech Challenge SBPLI Long Island Championship at Smithtown High School on February 9th. A total of 15 FIRST® Robotics Competition teams will represent Long Island at the FIRST World Championships in Detroit, April 25th-28th. Included among them is Team #810, the “Mechanical Bulls” from Smithtown, which won the SBPLI Long Island Regional FIRST Robotics Competition #2 on Saturday, April 14th, along with the event’s coveted Chairman’s Award and the Woodie Flowers Finalist Award. Also advancing is Team #5016, “Huntington Robotics”
from Huntington, which won the Chairman’s Award at SBPLI Long Island Regional #1, on April 11th, earning them a guaranteed spot. Team #6806, the “Mineola Wild Reds” from Mineola, the region’s only rookie team for 2018, took home the Rookie All-Star Award at Regional #2; while Team #2869, the “Regal Eagles,” earned the Engineering Inspiration Award at Regional #1; both will compete in the Championship. Further FIRST Robotics Competition teams from the region set to participate in the FIRST World Championship are: Team #533, the “PSIcotics” from Lindenhurst and Team #2638, the “Rebels” from Great Neck, were each finalists in Regional #1; as well as Team #870, “Team R.I.C.E.” from Southold; Team #1468, the “J-Birds” from Hicksville; and Team #3171, the “Hurricanes” from Westhampton Beach, were each finalists at Regional #2, and all secured Wildcard opportunities. Team #263, the “Sachem Aftershock”
from Ronkonkoma; Team #527, the “Red Dragons” from Plainedge, whose member, Nicole Jacobsen, earned the Dean’s List Award; and Team #3950, “RoboGym Robotics” from Glen Head, which earned the Team Spirit Award; were each waitlisted following Regional #2 and will now also attend the Championships. Team #4458, the “Infernobotix” from Center Moriches, which won the Tech Valley Regional in Troy, New York on March 17th; Team #329, the “Mohawks” from Patchogue-Medford, which was awarded the Engineering Inspiration Award at the Hudson Valley Regional in Suffern, New York on March 25th; and Team #3624, the “ThunderColts” from Huntington Station (Half Hollow Hills), which earned a wildcard spot following the Tech Valley Regional, are all also competing at the 2018 World Championships. “We are extremely proud of all the hard work and dedication that

The Miller Place School District’s Miller Place High School cheerleading team was recently celebrated by the Town of Brookhaven for finishing in first place at the Suffolk County Cheerleading Champions for Medium Varsity Teams Division II. To recognize their achievement, Town of Brookhaven Councilwoman Jane Bonner presented the team with Certificates of Congratulations during a recent town board meeting. “It was my pleasure to honor these outstanding high school students,” said Councilwoman Bonner. “It takes hard work and dedication to excel in
these very competitive activities and they should all be proud of their great accomplishments. Beautifying Grounds Three Village Central School District’s Arrowhead Elementary School garden club members helped to beautify their school grounds by planting pansies and
colorful pinwheels in planters. The planters were provided by the school’s Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports Committee last spring
and the 52-member club help to maintain them throughout the year. In the fall they planted mums in the planters, which are located at the school’s main and security entrances.

Exceling at Olympiads
The Miller Place School District announced today that its Math Olympiad team at Laddie Decker Elementary School recently earned a Certificate of High Achievement and a Meritorious Achievement Certificate following the school’s participation in the Math Olympiads. In addition, six students finished in the top eight percent of students nationwide. Math Olympiads is a nationwide mathematics competition for students in grades four through eight, which helps them explore advanced mathematics concepts in an environment of friendly competition. “The Miller Place School District is proud of our students for all their hard work, and we are honored to receive this recognition. These students’ accomplishments are emblematic of the Miller Place educational standard,” said Miller Place School District Superintendent Dr. Marianne Cartisano. “Advancing mathematical education is one of our primary goals as educators, and receiving these awards are a testament to the many hours of dedication to academic excellence our teachers and students exhibit every day.” The Miller Place School District Math Olympiads team ended the competition with a final score of 189, which was in the top 20 percent of all schools throughout the country that participated in the competition. In addition to its rigorous mathematics program, the Miller Place School District
also offers a number of advanced courses and extracurricular opportunities for development in mathematics. “This has been our best year in the Math Olympiads yet, and we look forward to raising the bar even higher next year,” said Laddie Decker Elementary School Principal Catherine Honeyman. “Having a strong foundation in mathematics is essential to every student’s education, and we’re honored by this exceptional recognition of the Miller Place School District’s rigorous math program.” Math Olympiads contests take place at each participating school throughout the country across several months. Each contest consists of five atypical math problems which must be solved under a time limit. Each student, working alone, scores one point for each correct answer. Teams can consist of up to 35 students, and the team score is the sum of the ten highest individual scores. The Miller Place School District encourages students to take advantage of programs like Math Olympiads, and supports students’ many successes as they continue to advance the study of mathematics. “There are 35 members of the Math Olympiads team, and each student contributed to our final score. It was truly a team effort,” said Math Olympiads Coordinator Evan Curran. Students who will be receiving silver pins for placing in the top eight

The Three Village Mock Trial Team wrapped up another successful courtroom competition season with its fourth consecutive trip to the Suffolk County Regional Final and a fourth straight undefeated regular season.
Their success this year was also marked by being named the Suffolk County and Long Island Moot Court Champions. Coaches Douglas Elliot and Joseph Prokop, along with the rest of the team, wished a fond farewell
to seniors Andi Sauer (president) and Michael Lu (vice-president); the duo never lost in head-to-head competition in the regular season and have been excellent examples for those who have followed.
Tri-M Induction Performing, leading and serving the community are just part of what the newly inducted students accomplish as part of the Earl L. Vandermeulen High School Chapter 2172 of the Tri-M Music Honor Society. At its 11th annual honors recital and induction ceremony, six students joined their peers in the National Association for Music Education’s program that focuses on creating future leaders
in music education and music advocacy. This year’s inductees are Katie Ambrozy, Chloe Andriani, Emily Bossert, Grace Crugnale, David Rotunno and Pina Than. In addition to showcasing the exceptional music program in Port Jefferson, these students met the high academic and musical standards necessary for induction into the honor society’s chapter. “These students will assist in inspiring and

recognizing musical achievement in the school music department and the community,” Dr. Michael Caravello, director of music and fine arts said. “Through the society’s five points of distinction: scholarship, character, cooperation, leadership, and service, they’ll continue to develop confidence, creativity and other skills that will benefit them in school and beyond.”

Rocky Point High School wrestling coach Darren Goldstein was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame on April 20th. the junior varsity coach. It was here that he started the North Shore Wrestling Club on a federally-funded grant, creating a club that opened its doors to anyone that wanted to attend. Before being appointed as the varsity coach in Rocky Point, Mr. Goldstein served as a coach in the Shoreham-Wading River, Mt. Sinai and Longwood school districts. To date, Mr. Goldstein has amassed 232 dual
meet wins, five Dual Meet League Championships, several league tournament championships, two Suffolk County Dual meet championships, a Suffolk County Tournament Champion and a 2010 New York State championship. He has coached 55 All-County wrestlers, including 12 Suffolk County champions. Additionally, he has coached one Olympian – Brandon Escobar – and a female world team member and national champion – Jenna Burkett. “The wrestling room is just another classroom, so like my classroom students I want the wrestlers to learn lessons of life that go beyond the four walls of the classroom or wrestling room,” said Mr. Goldstein. “Being inducted into the Hall of Fame was a tremendous honor.”

Lunch with a Scientist P.J. Gelinas Junior High School eighth-grade earth science students attended a series of talks this year with renowned professionals as part of an initiative called “Lunch with a Scientist.” During the most recent event, students met with professor William Holt, a geophysicist from the Department of Geosciences at Stony Brook University, who reviewed his research in plate tectonics and the geoscience profession. Professor Holt’s research focuses on the movement on of Earth’s tectonic plates and the resulting stresses and
strains produced across the North American continent. His talk was focused around the origin and current state of the San Andreas Fault, in California. This North American famous feature was formed as the continent moved westward over an ancient sea-floor ridge. His research team measures the motion of the planet with a high degree of accuracy using GPS (global positioning satellites). During his discussion, professor Holt even made use of a toy slinky to help demonstrate the way that different seismic waves move
through the planet. The discussion also highlighted the positive job forecasts for the geoscience profession over the next decade due to both retirements and job growth. Overall, the experience broadened the students understanding of Regents level concepts through an examination of cutting-edge research performed at the local research university. New Spaces students had a hand in creating, designing, fundraising, budgeting, ordering, developing and redesigning for this initiative,” said adviser Linda Figliozzi. “To date, we have created three indoor recess rooms. One being a quiet recess room, the other a large game room and along the way, our principal offered the mini gym as a third place for larger activities. Classes rotate during recess through these three rooms depending on the weather conditions.” At the grand opening,

Mount Elementary School in the Three Village Central School District proudly celebrated the grand opening of the building’s new Game and Indoor Recess Rooms in April. Since 2013, the building’s Student Government has been working on a youth-led project to change the indoor recess environment at Mount School from the classroom to a more exciting environment. “Over the years, many

Congressional Art Champions
On Friday, April 27th, Congressman Lee Zeldin hosted his fourth annual art reception at Artspace in Patchogue, during which he announced Isabella Kosiba of Smithtown Christian School as the 2018 winner of the Congressional Art Competition for the First Congressional District: “The Artistic Discovery Contest.” In attendance at the event were the twelve finalists, their art teachers and families, Artspace curator Tracy Todd Hunter, and local artists who served as judges. The House of Representatives hosts a nationwide high school art competition every spring to raise awareness of the importance of art programs in our schools, and to recognize and celebrate the creativity and diversity of students. The winner’s artwork is displayed in the United States Capitol for one year. The third place winner, Sutton Reinboth-Lynch of East Hampton High School, and second place
winner, Raphaela Araugo of Eastport South Manor High School, will have their artwork displayed in Congressman Zeldin’s Patchogue office. 7 Marathons in 7 Days
On April 27th, Supervisor Ed Romaine honored Eva Casale and her “Team Eva” colleagues at Town Hall during the last leg of her ”7 Marathons in 7 Days” run to raise funds and generate awareness for veterans. Ms. Casale, VP of Information Technology
at Suffolk Federal Credit Union, ran a total of 184 miles from April 21st27th to support veterans through Hope for Warriors. Along her route, she delivered 184 flowers at points of honor across Long Island, including the Veterans Memorial at Town Hall.
The run was held during “Every Veteran Appreciated Week” and focused on honoring local servicemen killed in action. The Supervisor presented Ms. Casale with a proclamation declaring April 27th “Eva Casale Day” in the Town of Brookhaven.

On Saturday, April 21st, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker joined TOB Councilwoman Jane Bonner and the Sound Beach Fire Department to celebrate its Annual Inspection and Installation Dinner at East Wind Long Island in Wading River. The celebration included honoring local firefighters for their years of service, inducting the new department officers, and presentations by government officials and community leaders. George Goodleaf was honored as the department’s “Fireman of the Year,” and Bob Pulick was recognized for his 50
years of service to the fire department. “I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the members of the Sound Beach Fire Department for protecting our community for 88 years,” said Legislator Anker. “It is an honor and a privilege to recognize the brave men and women for the services they provide, which are vital to the safety of our community.” Legislator Anker presented certificates to firefighters who were recognized for their dedicated years of service: Bob Pulick was recognized for 50 years of service; Bill
Pellenz and Ken Tobiassen for 45 years; James Harris for 35 years; John Romonoski for 30 years; Marc Francois and Keith Williams for 25 years; and Tom Passariello for 5 years. In Celebration of Arbor Day (April 27th), Supervisor Ed Romaine and Councilwoman Jane Bonner joined the Rocky Point Lions Club at the Wading River Elementary School and the Laddie A. Decker Sound Beach School to speak with students about Arbor Day and to hand out tree
seedlings. The Lions Club sponsored the event to generate interest in Arbor Day while enhancing our local environment. More than 900 fourth grade students from five north shore schools are joining students across the nation by taking home a free Norway spruce
tree seedling to plant at their homes as part of the “Fourth Grade Foresters USA” program, which was created to provide a simple and inexpensive way for any individual, business or organization to send the fourth grade students home with a tree of their own to plant and care for.
State Ranking
The Port Jefferson Middle School Science Olympiad team placed eighth overall in the New York State Science Olympiad Competition, held recently in Syracuse. The ranking is the second highest for the team in almost two decades. The team, which includes students from grades 6-9, achieved 12 medals in various events. During the awards ceremony, the top 10 finishers were announced and recognized and the team received a plaque for their accomplishment. According to coach and middle school science teacher Adam Bouchard, the students were successful by their hard work in studying scientific

Honor Society Inductions As a result of their academic successes, 69 Rocky Point High School juniors and seniors were recently inducted into the building’s chapter of the National Honor Society in front of an audience of family and friends. Guest speaker, James McCormick started the evening addressing the students and their guests. Attendees heard
from student officers of the chapter who spoke about the pillars of the organization: scholarship, service, leadership and character. After the traditional candle lighting ceremony, inductees were individually escorted to the stage by the current membership and chapter president Allen Liu who led the current members and inductees in reciting

Volunteer Efforts Honored Ward Melville High School senior Madeline Mastriano has been named a Distinguished Finalist in the 2018 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards competition – a nationwide contest honoring young people for outstanding acts of volunteerism. Madeline was one of only eight New York State students selected for his distinction. Madeline has helped
to raise $37,000 for the Stony Brook Children’s Hospital during the past five years by running a lemonade stand with her brother. To date, the event has attracted more than 100 student volunteers and 25 business supporters to help with the cause. As a Distinguished Finalist, Madeline was presented with an engraved bronze medallion.
According to organizers, the Prudential Spirit of Community Award represents the United States’ largest youth recognition program based solely on volunteer service. The program, now in its 23rd year, is conducted by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals.
