The Charity of the Month for May is: Bikers Against Child Abuse (BACA) www.BACAworld.org
Bikers Against Child Abuse is a 501(C)(3) non-profit organization. BACA formed with the intent to create a safer environment for abused children. They exist as a body of bikers to empower children not to feel afraid of the world in which they live. They stand ready to lend support to their wounded friends by involving them with an established, united organization. BACA works in conjunction with local and state officials who are already in place to protect children. BACA receives calls on their helpline (631-408-8218), which is taken by the Chapter Child Liaison. This member contacts the family and an initial visit is organized to meet the guardian and child at their home or another location. Following this visit, two BACA members are assigned as “Primaries” to the child who remain available for contact 24/7/365. A ride is then organized for the members of the Chapter to meet the child. This is when a ceremony is performed to take the child into the BACA family, which is where the empowerment begins.
If you are interested in becoming a BACA member you must meet certain requirements. Some of them are that you have regular access to a motorcycle, are 18 years or older, can pass an NCIC fingerprint check, can attend monthly meetings and Chapter events and that you have a desire to help abused children. If you meet the basic criteria, you can eventually become a “Cleared Supporter”, which is when you are assigned a Patched Member as your “Sponsor”. This member guides you through extensive training, which goes on for a minimum of at least one year before you can be considered eligible to become a full Patched Member. Their meetings are held the second Sunday of every month (unless it’s a Holiday) at the American Legion Hall in Bohemia at 9:00 a.m. If you have any questions at all, please contact the Long Island Chapter Vice President and Public Relations Officer (Big D) at bigd@li-ny. bacaworld.org.

Nope, You Don’t Have Writer’s Block. We’ve all watched the scene in the movie where the frustrated writer is sitting at his computer, sighing and running his fingers through his hair as words fail to flow from his fingertips onto the screen. This effect was even more dramatic in the days where writers would stare blankly at typewriters, write a few shaby sentences, become disgusted and then ball up the mostly blank piece of paper and toss it into an already filled wastepaper basket. These character’s were supposedly suffering from writer’s block, and “gasp!” their very livelihoods were on the line. Unfortunately, for these fictional characters and for the thousands of you out there who want to write for personal expression, pleasure, or perhaps as a profession (not to mention all of the writing we all now have to do on social media), you have been misguided by the myth of writer’s block. Yes, writer’s block is a myth; a misnomer. Here’s why... most people believe that one sits down in front of a computer keyboard to write.
Nope. The secret that myself, and many others who write for a living know, is that no writing actually takes place at the computer (or with a pen and notebook for that matter). Writing is simply... thought married with emotion. If you’re having a thought and there is a strong emotion behind it, you are writing. This stands to reason, since you are the screenwriter, director and producer of your life. When you are walking through a museum exhibit, you are writing. When you are listening to a beautiful piece of music that moves you, you are writing. When you are sharing a hearty laugh with someone, you are writing. When you are attempting to work through heartbreak, disappointment, trauma, anger, frustration or even love... my friends, you are writing. Putting pen to paper or fingers to keyboard is not writing - that is the act of transcribing. By the time you sit down to “write,” it should already be written. In fact, I refuse to ever write my Living Well column in the actual column format. I insist on
writing it somewhere else. I do not want my headshot and my column’s logo staring back at me. Too much pressure. No thanks! I transfer my words over to my actual column once I have written down my thoughts. Lastly, here is my biggest trade secret I have to share when it comes to writing; some of my most engaging written words were actually created by talking to myself, out loud. Yes, your community newspaper’s columnist is a bit of a loony bird. I talk to myself - it’s how I write. And let me tell you, some of my most profound realizations about myself and about life have come from this stream of consciousness self-talk. Some of it is gibberish, but inevitably, some pearls come out. Shocked as anyone else, I run over to the nearest computer or notepad and get them down before they evaporate into thin air. Inspired thought is like a rare and elusive butterfly. You’re so awed by their beauty and divinity and before you know it, they’ve flown away. Capturing those moments is the art of writing.

Harmonious Introduction to Music Third grade students at Edna Louise Spear Elementary School in the Port Jefferson School District experienced an informative and musical lesson on string, brass and woodwind instruments at the school’s recent instrumental recruitment meeting. From the soft vibrations of a violin to the baritonevoiced euphonium, the students were introduced
to the instruments by the current fourth graders, who were eager to demonstrate the instrument they each play. The annual event is a collaborative effort of Dr. Vanessa Salzman, the 4-6 grade orchestra teacher, who organizes the event and band teacher Mark Abbonizio, who runs the meeting with the students. The district commends the students who took part
in showcasing their talents. to fairy tale character challenges. Attendees also had participated in a LEGO Build-a-thon, and see Rocky Point robotics in action. The district continues to build opportunities for students to explore STEM fields and possibilities, and to generate enthusiasm for solving STEM challenges.

Fourth grade students at Edna Louise Spear Elementary School in the Port Jefferson School District have embarked on an art lesson involving clay and music. Along with teacher Meghan McCarthy, they learned about the long history of the ancient instrument known as the ocarina. They studied
ocarinas from throughout the world, starting in Central and South America, to China, Europe and North America. After constructing the form, they then worked together on making the whistle. They were able to create multiple sounds by piercing the ocarina to create a high or low pitch. “Students were

Artful Dozen Showcase Work
The Port Jefferson School District’s fine arts department was commended at the April 9 board of education meeting and 12 students were honored for having their work displayed at the 2019 Spring Art Show at the Port Jefferson Village Center. The annual monthlong joint collaboration between the village and the school district is an opportunity for the greater community to view the creations of district students. The Reward of Volunteering Dozens of students from Earl L. Vandermeulen High School and Port Jefferson Middle School joined forces with members of the Port Jefferson Rotary Club to help ready Camp PaQua-Tuck for the summer season. Members of the high school’s Interact Club and the middle school’s
National Junior Honor Society spent a recent weekend preparing cabins, dorm rooms and buildings. Students also raked and added mulch to the flowering plants at the Center Moriches camp, which provides special needs children and young adults with camping experiences.
According to Interact Club adviser Deirdre Filippi, the annual volunteer event is always a success for the students and helps them to understand not only the needs of others, but how simple efforts go a long way in serving the greater community.
Substance Abuse & Mental Health In an effort to proactively support students’ social, emotional and health needs, the Rocky Point Union Free School District recently hosted an informative Substance Abuse and Mental Health Community Forum. In addition to hearing the results of a recent survey taken by Rocky Point students, those in attendance learned how the self-reported answers compare to what student peers are experiencing
nationwide. Guest speakers included North Shore Youth Council Executive Director Janene Gentile, RESPONSE of Suffolk County crisis counselor Lorraine Peragallo, Deputy Sheriff Investigator Michael Kern and New York National Guard Counterdrug Task Force and Civil Operations Specialist Carissa Siry.
