And, after a long and hard winter in many parts of the country, most of us are ready for sunshine, warmer temperatures and the hopefulness that spring always symbolizes. But as winter gives way to spring, we are also reminded that our lives have “seasons,” too — and it pays to be prepared for all of them. So, as you move into the “retirement season,” you’ll need to prepare for several possible challenges, including the following: Outliving your resources — The idea of outliving one’s financial resources is certainly not one we want to face. In fact, in a poll of people ages 44 to 75 sponsored by Allianz Life Insurance, 61% said they fear depleting their assets more than they fear dying. The best way you can overcome anxiety about running out of money is to invest and plan. Contribute as much as you can afford to your IRA and 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan — and when your salary goes up over time, increase your contributions. As for the “plan” part, try to envision the type of lifestyle you want during retirement, and then estimate how much this lifestyle will cost. Once you reach retirement, you will also need to do some planning — specifically, you will need to calculate how much money you can afford to withdraw from your investments each year. Becoming disabled — One-third of all people between the ages of 30 and 64 will become disabled at some point, according to the Health Insurance Association of America. If you became disabled, even temporarily, the loss of income could prove devastating to your financial security, and that of your family’s. To avoid this worrisome scenario, you may want to consider disability insurance. If your employer offers this coverage as an employee benefit, take it — but don’t assume it will be sufficient. Many times, an employer-sponsored disability policy will only cover a short-term disability and may have a long waiting period for benefits to kick in. Consequently you may need to purchase your own disability insurance policy to supplement your employer’s coverage. Requiring long-term care — Unfortunately, many people eventually require some type of longterm care, whether that involves a stay in a nursing home or the assistance of a home health care aid. This type of care is expensive, and Medicare only covers part of it. Just how costly is long-term care? The national average for home health aide services

Written In The Stars By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I’ve never been one for astrology, but I recently came upon a site that analyzed such philosophies based upon the date, exact time and location of your birth, providing a detailed account of every personality trait imaginable. I have to admit, I was prepared to be skeptical of the results – until I read them. So many characteristics were, shall we say, scarily accurate. The analysis was so in depth that even the most cynical person might take pause. From pinpointing my shy, somewhat introverted
nature to delving into my tendencies toward “bitter sarcasm,” it covered all aspects quite thoroughly. I was impressed, to say the least. So what conclusion should be drawn from these seemingly abstract signs and symbols? Are our personality traits pre-determined, based upon some random arrangement of the sun, moon and planets, or are we continuously shaped by the environments in which we are respectively raised? It is an interesting concept to consider, especially taking into account the unexpected accuracy of this “reading.”
It coincides with the ageold question: can we alter our destinies, or is our fate predetermined? Normally, this contemplation is reserved for our path in life as a whole, not necessarily the many facets of our specific being – but the question is valid, nonetheless. I suppose, as with anything, there is a happy medium of open mindedness and reservation that serves us best. Reading into anything can bring mixed results; but there is no substitute for stepping back and seeing a situation – or a person – for what it truly is.
ALL AMERICAN WRESTLER - Earl L. Vandermeulen High School student Matteo DeVincenzo competed in the National Wrestling Tournament in Virginia Beach, VA. on March 29th. Matteo competed in a weight class with more than 90 participants, taking fourth place in the nation. He was also named an All-American athlete and is the first wrestler in the district’s history to attain this status.
Earth Day Celebration
On April 26th and April 27th, the Long Island Game Farm - Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo hosted an Earth Day learning activity, in which children were encouraged to plant bean seeds, provide the proper care, and watch it grow. Children took a cup, filled it with soil, dropped in a couple of seeds, added water and more soil, and then covered the cup with plastic wrap. They were then given
instructions on how to care for the plant once it grows. Game Farm staff members encouraged the children to keep records and drawings of the plant and post pictures of the plant to the Game Farm’s Facebook page. Earth Day is a national holiday that encourages individuals to take the time out of their day to appreciate our habitat. The purpose of this activity was to show children how they can care for
our earth by taking just a few minutes to plant a seed and take care of it with nutrients and water. Unbeknownst to many children, a small seed can help the earth by providing nutritious foods and beautiful plants and trees that are essential for human and animal health. Nassakeag Elementary School students and staff members collected spare change for a worthy cause this spring. During a twoweek Pennies For Patients drive, the school raised more than $1,255 for the Leukemia Lymphoma Society. The effort, which was the building’s most successful
to date, was spearheaded by the Nassakeag Student Council. The names of those who contributed to the cause were put on a “Wall of Pennies” display board in the building, which served as a visual reminder of the cause. According to the society’s website, “Pennies for Patients
is a service learning, character education and philanthropy program that gives students a unique experience making a difference through teamwork — working together to aid thousands of children and adults in the fight blood cancers like leukemia.”
PENNIES FOR PATIENTS - Nassakeag Elementary School’s Student Council spearheaded a collection drive that raised more than $1,255 for the Leukemia Lymphoma Society this spring.
Fun With Fractions having fun with fractions as they bring math to life with beautiful work,” said teacher Patricia Cipriano. “They’ve been working hard to learn the subject matter, and these hands-on projects helped them enjoy what they are learning.” During the project, the students created “Fraction Sundaes” using nine paper scoops of ice cream and determining what percent of each were included; “Fraction Kites”
using 25 different colored squares and determining what fraction of each was represented; and “Fraction Creatures” using one circle cut into many pieces to make up a picture. Additionally, after reading the book Grandfather Tang’s Story, the students created “Tangram Illustrations,” a Chinese form of storytelling with seven shapes cut from a square of paper.

A Home Away From Home
I took a trip to Fire Island this past weekend. For the first time since last summer, I was back home. When I hopped on the ferry, I did not even think about the changes that may have influenced my little island. Upon arrival, it became clear that the summer rush had not yet spoiled the little barrier beach which, for me, symbolizes paradise. After many months of labor, the island is starting to get ready for the busy season. Starting Memorial Day weekend, the concrete sidewalks which seemed so isolated will be crawling with tourists. This is not a bad thing, however,
as the influx of visitors exponentially bolsters Fire Island’s economy. As I enjoyed my first few moments back on Fire Island, I noticed one characteristic that I had longed for the most. The geniality of the people who call this island home is a trait that I have never experienced elsewhere. Living as an “islander” grants you access into an exclusive club reserved only for those who treasure the island the most. Like myself, those same islanders have built the barrier beach up even after devastation. Following Hurricane Sandy, Fire Island was in pretty
bad shape. Thankfully, essentially all facets of the infrastructure have been repaired, and the island is better than ever. As one walks down the beach, “TrapBags” can be seen. Filled with sand, these large canvas sacks were purchased in order to create a dune. It seems as though this plan is thoroughly succeeding, possibly saving countless homes previously marked for demolition, like my own. After months of rebuilding, Fire Island is back in fighting shape. It seems as though this little slice of heaven is ready to welcome the masses as we quickly slide into summer.

Continued From 9 actively involved since then. Sally is one of the friendly voices that you hear on the other end of the line for homebound elderly in Telephone Reassurance Program (TR). Her memory for detail is impressive as you hear her converse with those that often feel isolated. Every Friday, Sally can be found chatting with a senior about their cat, the price of home heating fuel, a TV show, a scientific finding, or suggesting a community resource that might benefit them. She is often teased that she would be a perfect TV talk show host. Sally has “adopted” the neediest of the TR recipients and visits them at home occasionally for a cup of tea and a bit of socialization they are so hungry for. When Sally isn’t at RSVP’s Telephone Reassurance Program, her other community involvement is being a part of Visiting Nurse Service of Suffolk County where she is a compassionate and gentle hospice worker. The hospice setting is not a sought after volunteer placement, but one that Sally excels in. Sally has experienced losses in her own life, yet has given of her time and talent by volunteering with the agency since she was 63, freely giving close to 5,000 hours of herself. Recently, Sally made the commitment to have her dog trained as a service dog. Both she and her pup graduated successfully and Sally travels weekly to various nursing homes and rehabilitation centers to provide the patients a bit of canine comfort.

Continuing A Tradition On April 24th, the Earl L. Vandermeulen High School chapter of the National Honor Society inducted 53 new members. The high school chamber orchestra, led by Director of Music and Fine Arts Michael Caravello, provided musical accompaniment throughout the evening. The ceremony began with greetings from Earl L. Vandermeulen High School Principal Dr. Matthew Murphy and Port Jefferson Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Bossert, who both recognized the great accomplishments of the students in attendance. “The National Honor Society is not simply about academic achievement,” said Dr. Murphy. “We are recognizing you for all that you have done to serve our community in addition to being outstanding students.” “The fact that we have 53 student inductees is extraordinary,” said Dr. Bossert. “It’s a reflection of the hard work and dedication that they have exemplified during their years in high school. Looking at this group I see not only academic success, but also athletes, musicians, thespians and those devoted to community service.” Keri Lukin Page, a 1992 Earl L. Vandermeulen High School graduate, delivered the ceremony of the pin address. During her address, Lukin Page encouraged students to keep their minds open to new ideas and opportunities throughout life, even if they are not planned. “It is important that you recognize those turning points in the road that help you to define who
you are, despite your own expectations,” she said. ‘That is what makes life interesting and surprising.” “It is important to always know who you are and what you believe in,” said Lukin Page. “It’s also crucial to allow yourself to stray from your plans enough to find the things in life you may not have even realized you wanted.” The induction continued with the ceremony of the emblem, ceremony of the candle-lighting and the

been studying a variety of cuisines from the different regions of Italy, and this trip brought their classroom studies to life,” said Pennino-Costa. “They prepared polenta and broccoli rabe, a recipe from Milan, as well as
gnocchi with tomato sauce from southern Italy.” Students worked together to create additional dishes, including bruschetta, chicken piccata and tiramisu.

LICADD delivers prevention programs aimed at bolstering children and young adults’ selfesteem, confidence and communication with peers and parents, before they are presented with the choice to use alcohol and drugs. Too Good for Drugs, which is designed for children in kindergarten through 12th grade, builds students’ resiliency by teaching them how to be socially competent and autonomous problem solvers. Under the Student Assistance Program (SAP), these resources are available in schools throughout Long Island and continue to expand into new school districts each month. For young people displaying signs of alcohol and drug abuse, Teen Intervene offers a month-long combination of individual and parent-

The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) will be hosting its 3rd Annual Tee-Off For Our Teens Tournament at the Sebonack Golf Club, Southampton, on Tuesday, May 20th. Seventy Six golfers will have the opportunity to play on one of Long Island’s most exclusive courses, enjoy spectacular views overlooking The Great Peconic Bay and help to support the programs and services LICADD provides to all Long Islanders. Sebonack was the host of the 2013 U.S. Women’s Open. The course opened in 2006 was designed by progolfers, Jack Nicklaus and Tom Doak and is adjacent to the National Golf Links of America and Shinnecock Hills Golf Club. Sponsorships are available and include priority tee-off, two tee signs and your corporate banner display. Individual players are $1,000 or $3,600 for a foursome. Registration begins at 11:30 a.m with plenty of time to practice putting and enjoy lunch before the shotgun start at 1 p.m. Early reservations are highly recommended for this exclusive course.
