Make something to make a difference. Six simple words that 11 Rocky Point High School students took to heart when they transformed some unused storage space in the high school into a makerspace complete with peg boards, shelves and several 3D printers. Those printers, coupled with the inspiration of technology education teacher Mr. John Schumacher, motivated the students to painstakingly build a 3D prosthetic hand. The students, sophomores to seniors – Blake Abrenica, Thomas Anzalone, Brendon Artzt, Jacob Bazata, Robert Christensen, Gavin Donovan, Justin Gersch, Gianna Imeidopf, Justin Pititto, James Prendergast

and Samad Sajjad – worked during free periods and after school meticulously assembling the 3D parts into a Phoenix V-3 prosthetic hand. Mr. Schumacher said he is passionate about teaching students the technology skills that they can use in many career fields, including architecture, interior design and mechanical and structural engineering. He happened upon e-NABLE, an organization with volunteer members who use open-source technology and 3D printers to provide free prosthetic hands for children and adults who need them. As traditional prosthetics normally cost thousands of dollars and need to be replaced as children grow,

the production of a printed Phoenix V-3 prosthetic hand is much more inexpensive because of its design: It simply relies on a person’s functional wrist and uses the palm to push against the device so the fingers close when the wrist is bent. The Rocky Point prosthetic hand will be donated to the organization. As Mr. Schumacher paraphrased Albert Einstein’s well-known thought, “In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity.” It’s his energies and enthusiasm teaching Rocky Point students during the pandemic that continue to inspire them to innovate and create something from nothing in the new makerspace.

‘Summer SWAP Series’ a Unique Outdoor Space Experience The SWAP. is made possible through funding from Suffolk County Presiding Officer Hahn’s office and a Department of Economic Development and Planning grant. “I am excited to join with Tom Manuel and the Jazz Loft in helping Stony Brook village businesses and visitors to SWAP the memory of this past year with one of a summer that is closer to normal.” said Suffolk County Legislator Hahn. “Stony Brook has a proud cultural history, and through this innovative program, we encourage tourists and residents alike to rediscover all of the art, music and creativity this region has to offer and help reinvigorate the local businesses that suffered mightily during their absence.” “The SWAP concept speaks to everything that we need in terms of diversity, inclusiveness, and bringing our community together,” said Ardolino, one of the generous sponsors of the event. “When I heard about the idea I said ‘Let’s do it!’”

Summer SWAP nights are scheduled for Thursday evenings, May 27, June 3, 10,17 , 24 and July 1, all from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The four stages will be set up throughout the Stony Brook Village area. Entry is FREE. Stage areas will include: Front lawn of the Jazz Loft where musicians will perform atop the Jazz Loft’s own mobile Jazz stage dubbed the “Jazz Dispatch”; Sand Street Beach, Stony Brook Village Inner Court, and the Brookhaven Town Lot by the kayak launch. Patrons can also take advantage of the numerous local restaurants in the area, with menus accessible online. Order your food, pick it up to go and head to the stages of your choice. Tiered sponsorship opportunities are available, ranging from $100 to $1500 with all proceeds going to support the Jazz Loft which has been closed for over a year due to the pandemic. Still facing the challenges of bringing live music and other cultural events to people during a pandemic, the Jazz Loft in Stony Brook, in partnership with Suffolk County Presiding Officer Kara Hahn, Michael Ardolino of Realty Connect and other community businesses have come up with a unique and imaginative way to do just that. Called “Summer Stages With A Purpose ( Summer SWAP), it will offer visitors a walking experience through the Stony Brook Village area, with four stages presenting music, art, history, educational lectures, activities and other cultural happenings. “Summer SWAP will be the ultimate collaborative celebration of music, art, history theater and activities right here in our Stony Brook Village,” said Jazz Loft founder Tom Manuel. “People can wander from stage to stage and take in a new experience at each one. It’s outdoors, it’s spacious and it’s a little back to normal for all of us.”

Hope House Ministries is a non-proﬁt organization located in Port Jefferson. They provide compassionate, comprehensive and competent care for the poor, the marginal and the wounded among us. This commitment is woven in the Gospel vision that all life is sacred and every human person is unique and has the right to be respected and protected. Their mission is founded in the spirit of St. Louis de Montfort, who had a commitment to the poor and the courage to do what no one else had the courage to do. They have accomplished much over the 40+ years they have been helping others with minimal ﬁnancial assistance from federal, state or county agencies. They depend on the generosity of private contributions, fundraising events and corporate donations. Hope House Ministries services people in both Nassau County and Suffolk County, offering services free of charge. Together, their staff and volunteers have created an empowering sense of family and community that are the change agents, helping young people grow in self-discipline, critical thinking, problem solving skills and personal responsibility. Hope House Ministries was founded by Fr. Francis Pizzarelli, SMM, LCSW-R, ACSW, DCSW. 41 years ago, Fr. Francis discovered hundreds of youth who were homeless, experiencing mental health issues and living with addictions and it wasn’t long before he realized that neither government nor faith communities were doing enough to meet the crisis of homelessness. He formed Hope House Ministries and it has grown into an amazing organization that has provided for the needs of over 500,000 individuals. Hope House Ministries offers

Citing mere feet to go before potentially being lost to the Atlantic Ocean, U.S. Senator Charles Schumer recently announced, after a call with the Army Corps of Engineers, that work to protect the Montauk Point Lighthouse will officially begin in May. Schumer, said starting in May is critical to protecting the historic structure. The lighthouse, a 1796 project propelled by George Washington, once stood hundreds of feet from the Atlantic coast, but over time, it has inched closer and closer to the water’s edge, where it now stands in peril. “We have come a long way since 1796,” said U.S. Senator Charles Schumer. “However, so has the historic Montauk Point Lighthouse, slipping ever closer to the Atlantic’s waters, but with fed funds en route and construction to start, we will restore the shoreline protections needed to keep this beacon of Long Island pride and tourism shining for years to come.” As reported by Newsday, H&L Contracting of Bay Shore was awarded the contract for the project. The plan will remove and reuse existing five and ten-ton armor stones and add additional ones along the shore to protect the lighthouse. The project will also help stabilize the slope of where the lighthouse stands with terracing and vegetation installation. The State Department of Environmental Conservation has committed $15.4M to the project and the Montauk Historical Society will continue to maintain the site once the project is finished. According to the Society, more than 100,000 visitors visit the lighthouse each year,

Is It Safe To Donate Blood During The Pandemic? Donating blood is a selfless act that saves lives. Blood donors may recognize the vital role they play in patient care, but many may wonder if it’s safe to donate blood during

the pandemic. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it is safe for anyone who is well to donate blood. That even goes for people who are social distancing due

to COVID-19. The CDC has recommended various safety measures to ensure the safety of donors and donation center volunteers and staff members. Such measures include spacing

donor chairs at least six feet apart and encouraging donors to make donation appointments ahead of time. Appointments can ensure donors are not spending more time at the donation

center than is absolutely necessary, reducing the likelihood that they have contact with someone who may have COVID-19 but not know it. The Red Cross notes it has instituted

additional safety protocols, such as laundering blankets used by donors after each use and requiring all donors and staff to wear face coverings or masks during the donation process.
