Normally affecting the lungs or lymph glands, this disease causes abnormal masses to form in bodily organs, which can disrupt the shape and the functions of the organ. Sarcoidosis still has unknown origins. The Foundation for Sarcoidosis Research is the leading non-profit organization dedicated to finding a cure for this disease. “As a nurse I know how debilitating rare diseases

We all have our routines. Me, I find particular solace in the schedules of daily life more so than most. My mornings, especially, tend to dictate the tone of the afternoon and evening. This is both good and bad, of course. A missed wake-up alarm, a favorite pair of jeans in the laundry, no more milk in the fridge… all can lead to being thrown off track and sent on your way in a state of disarray. Whereas, when things run like clockwork, the feeling tends to be more of the notion that nothing can stand in the way of productivity. Who knew the snooze button could hold so much power? In lieu of last week’s column

ruminating on the power of the almighty calendar and its tendency to dictate our schedules to the point that we no longer can differentiate those things we truly enjoy doing from those that are pure obligation, I received several kind letters from readers expressing their complete agreement that their lives, too, have been taken over by those tiny square boxes. One woman even went so far as to recommend a book, “Quiet Mind,” which suggests that we would all be better served by taking a moment to sit back and relax, to find an hour of peace in which to clear our minds of the clutter that accumulates over the course of day after day spent running from one task to the next. The idea is to eventually, over time, expand upon this hour and have its influence extend throughout the entire day. How nice that would be.

It all begins with one moment, whether it is rising early to see the sun come up over the Great South Bay, or taking the extra time to prepare a homemade breakfast during the rush of the week, or even driving the scenic route to work. Little things add up to big things, and big things become a way of living, day by day. There is ample benefit to be found in making that effort. It is not a perfect process, to be sure. There will still be those days when the snooze button seems the most viable option, when skipping breakfast and running out the door to sit in traffic is how you are destined to spend your morning. But that doesn’t have to dictate the tone of the entire day. Pop a CD in, turn up the volume, sit back and enjoy the ride. There are miles to go before you sleep.

This walk followed a path through Heritage Park in Mt Sinai, and the proceeds went to Sarcoidosis research. At the April 25thGeneral Meeting of the Suffolk County Legislature, Introductory Resolution 1198 was adopted unanimously. The bill, sponsored by Legislator Tom Muratore, “declares April 27th, 2017 as “Operation Safe Stop Day,” designed to promote school bus safety. Operation Safe Stop is a cooperative project supported by the New York State Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee, the New York State Education Department, the New York Association of Pupil Transportation, the New York State School Bus Contractors Association, the student transportation industry and state, county, city and local law enforcement agencies. Its purpose is to increase awareness of school bus safety, as well as the dangers associated with passing a school bus illegally.

“An estimated 50,000 motor vehicles illegally pass New York State school buses every day,” stated Legislator Muratore. “That statistic is astounding to me - 50,000 times each day, we put our most valued resource, our children, in peril. The awareness provided by Operation Safe Stop Day is crucial in preventing school bus accidents that could result in injury or death. Remember, if you approach a stopped school bus with its red lights flashing, you must STOP…it’s the law!”

WELLINGTON, Fla. (CBS12) — Grief counselors are at Emerald Cove Middle School on Monday to help students cope with the loss of a fellow student, according to district leaders. Jonathon Gonzalez, 13, died after crashing a dirt bike over the weekend. It happened Sunday afternoon near Oakberry Circle and Oak Hamlet Lane in Wellington. The dirt bike crashed into a canal, according to Palm Beach County Fire Rescue spokesman Albert Borroto. A medical helicopter took the boy to the hospital where he later died. Palm Beach County Schools says the counselors are being made available to both students and staff.

Celebrating Brookhaven more than 360 years ago. Led by members of the Three Village Historical Society and the Town of Brookhaven, they studied the beautiful Vance Locke murals that grace the walls of the school’s auditorium, which visually documents the community’s growth. Additionally, they learned about the importance of the wooden sculptures – the New York State Coat of Arms and images of Benjamin Tallmadge and Richard Woodhull – which are affixed to the exterior

of the building. Throughout the remainder of the program, the students were led on a walking tour of the community. With the assistance of their teachers and community volunteers, the students visited seven local sites rich in historical importance, including the Frank Melville Memorial Park, Patriot’s Rock, the Caroline Episcopal Church and Cemetery and the Amos Smith House.

Greening Brookhaven In celebration of Earth Day (April 22nd), the Town held its annual “Free Tree, Mulch and Compost Giveaway” on April 21st at Town Hall as part of Supervisor Ed Romaine’s “Greening Brookhaven” initiative. The goal of the initiative is to distribute and plant 10,000 tree seedlings by 2020, the same goal date for the Green Energy and Sustainability initiative for Town facilities. The free mulch and compost will continue to be available at various Town locations while supplies last. Summer Youth Employment Qualifying Suffolk County residents between the ages of 14 and 20 may be able to secure summer employment through the 2017 Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF)funded Summer Youth Employment Program. This program, offered through the Suffolk County Department of Labor’s One Stop Employment Center, is a wonderful way for County youths to take advantage of their time off from school to earn money to help with their personal or family expenses. According to Legislator D’Amaro, the summer

program is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, July 5th, 2017 and will run for seven weeks through Friday, August 18th, 2017. Qualifying program participants will be paid $10 per hour and may work up to 25 hours each week. Besides the age qualifications, applicants must meet United States residency requirements and the gross annual income of the participant’s family must not exceed 200% of the federal poverty level or: • $24, 120 for a family of one

BREAKFAST OF STARS - On Saturday, April 22nd, Congressman Lee Zeldin attended the Kiwanis Club of Greater Riverhead’s Breakfast of Stars at the Birchwood of Polish Town in Riverhead. The Breakfast of Stars is an annual event which celebrates heroes within the community. Congressman Zeldin is pictured with NYPD Officers Peter Cybulski, left, and Hameed Armani, right. These two officers were appropriately hailed as heroes last year when, after a suspected explosive was thrown into their car, they selflessly drove the vehicle away from the public in Times Square as opposed to vacating their vehicle in place.

Engineering a Win As a result of his structurally sound engineering skills, Ward Melville High School junior Andrew Zhang was named the winner of this year’s Brookhaven National Lab Bridge Building Contest and has qualified to have his design compete at the 2017 International Bridge Contest in Dallas, Texas. As part of the school’s

InSTAR program, members of the junior class participated in this event by engineering and designing a structure within the stipulations set by BNL. They were required to draw bridge plans to scale and construct models for maximum efficiency, which were then tested using a hydraulic pressure plate. The amount of force

per mass that each bridge can withstand is measured and students were able to tweak their final deigns based on the data received. During the BNL contest, Andrew’s bridge competed against the top entries from across Nassau and Suffolk counties, and was found to be able to withstand 1,049 times its own mass.

Splashing into Spring Cold weather and rain didn’t dampen the spirits of the day as splashers gathered to help raise money and awareness for AHRC Suffolk’s programs and services during their annual Polar Bear Splash last Saturday, April 22nd. This year welcomed back a few of our favorite groups such as James E Allen Junior and Senior

High, the Dominic Trionfo Memorial Fund Foundation and North Babylon’s Students for a Better World and Honor Society! We also welcomed some new groups such as Connetquot’s Breaking Boundaries Club! This year also welcomed Owen Karlson a 10-yearold boy from Wading River who helped raise over

$2,000 for the Splash. For Owen, it was personal, he has a brother that attends AHRC Suffolk’s Saul and Elaine Seiff Educare Center and wanted to do something that would make a difference for his brother; Owen and Team Elliot helped raise over $10,000 for the event!

Fundraiser a Success

GO RED INITIATIVE - King Kullen Grocery Company, Inc. recently presented the American Heart Association (AHA) with a check for $3,500 in support of the organization’s “Go Red for Women” initiative. A portion of the donation was raised through the generosity of King Kullen customers during an in-store scanned coupon program. “Go Red for Women” is a local and national movement that uses education, prevention and advocacy to make women aware of their risk for heart disease.

Options for Community Living held its third annual comedy night fundraising event at Governor’s in Levittown on Sunday, April 23rd. The event raised close to $3,000 from the approximately 70 employees, friends and supporters in attendance. The proceeds from this event will benefit Options’

programs which provide vital housing and services for Long Islanders in need. Options is grateful to Martha Clara Vineyards, Sky Zone of Deer Park, Long Island Adventure Park, Little Bird Curious Confections and many local businesses who generously donated gifts for the raffle baskets. “We are so grateful to

Sheriff Honored

Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco was honored yesterday by the United States Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA) Long Island Office in a private ceremony

at the Central Islip Courthouse. The DEA paid tribute to Sheriff DeMarco to recognize his “Unwavering Partnership, Support and Assistance in Furthering the Successful Investigations and

Prosecutions of Domestic and International Narcotics Trafficking Organizations.” In February of this year, the Sheriff announced that Sheriff’s Deputy Investigators had participated in a successful 36 month investigation dubbed “Operation Fantastic Four” that took down a large-scale Columbian Drug Organization that has trafficked hundreds of kilograms of cocaine and heroin to the United States, Europe and Central America for distribution. Upon receiving the plaque, DeMarco stated, “I am grateful for the DEA’s recognition and for the remarkable work of our men and women in the Sheriff’s Office who risk their lives during these dangerous investigations in order to stop deadly drugs from entering our communities.”

Northwell Health Walk More than 6,500 people will hit the Jones Beach Boardwalk on Sunday, May 21st to take part in the annual Northwell Health Walk, which will support the health of women and children throughout the region. All funds raised at the 5K Jones Beach walk will benefit programs at The Katz Institute for Women’s Health and Cohen Children’s Medical Center. Pre-register online at www.northwellhealthwalk. org. Gala Raises Millions In recognition of his dedication to the fight against cancer, Joseph R. Biden Jr., 47th Vice President of the United States of America, was honored at Stony Brook University’s annual charity Gala at Chelsea Piers in Manhattan. Hosted by the Stony Brook Foundation, the Gala generates funds for student financial aid and a select academic area of excellence. This year, the University raised $6,946,000 in gifts and pledges including $2,051,000 for scholarships and $4,895,000 to support the Stony Brook University Cancer Center. Since 2000, the event has raised more than $50 million. As Vice President, Joe Biden led the White House “Cancer Moonshot” with the mission to double the rate of progress in preventing the disease that leads to more than 8 million deaths worldwide

every year. The intention, said Biden in his remarks, was to infuse the cancer research culture with “the urgency of now.” Under his leadership, the Cancer Moonshot Task Force catalyzed novel, innovative and impactful partnerships among 20 government agencies, departments and White House offices as well as over 70 private sector collaborations. Biden also helped lead the effort to pass the 21st Century Cures Act, which provides $1.8 billion over seven years for the Cancer Moonshot scientific priorities. “The Moonshot is a program,” said Biden that “has become a movement, giving cancer patients and the people impacted by their illness new hope. And what cancer patients want more than ever is hope. But we can only hope to make sustainable progress if we’re preparing the next generation of cancer

Stamping Out Hunger Island Harvest Food Bank is teaming up with the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) and the United States Postal Service (USPS) for the 25th annual Stamp Out Hunger campaign on Saturday, May 13th. As the nation’s largest single-day food drive, postal carriers across the country will collect nonperishable food items donated by generous homeowners. On Long Island, all food collected will help Island Harvest Food Bank to provide supplemental food support to the more than 316,000 Long Islanders who are at risk of hunger and food insecurity. Participating in Stamp Out Hunger is easy. Simply leave nonperishable food items, such as canned goods, cereal, pasta, rice, boxed juices and shelfstable milk (please, no glass items), next to your mailbox before your regularly scheduled mail delivery on Saturday, May 13th. Your USPS letter carrier will do the rest. All food donated will help replenish Island
