Best Community for Music As a testament to the dedication of music education in the Port Jefferson School District, it has been ranked among the NAMM Foundation’s 2018 “Best Communities for Music Education” in America. The honor acknowledges schools and districts across the country for their commitment to and support for music education as part of the core curriculum. This is the 12th consecutive year the district has received the prestigious recognition.

with Jamie Lynn Ryan Triskaidekaphobia: fear of the number 13 I’ve known many people with an aversion to this perceived “unlucky” number, whether serving as a date of particular significance or - the more common superstition - when it should happen to fall on a Friday, of all days. Personally, I’ve taken special care to note any particularly negative occurrences on these infrequent juxtapositions of day and date, with thankfully few to report. Just another day, as they say. And with that, today - May 2nd - I commemorate the 13th anniversary of my start date here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers. Over one dozen years ago, I began my journey into the world of journalism, straight from college. At the time, thirteen years would have certainly seemed like an eternity to spend in any one establishment. Think about
it - even school, which often seems like an infinite chunk of time, is divided into segments of elementary, junior high and senior high. College, if it follows, is usually segmented into four-year intervals. Thirteen years… well that’s an entirely different level of commitment, is it not? And yet, even in the workforce, time tends to separate into stages. It begins with the formative years of finding your footing in a particular field, still unsure of what the job entails and what your responsibilities will include. Everything is new and exciting as you realize - hey, I’m really doing this! These are followed by the years of transition, when positions may be altered, new projects will come and go, and you begin to discover your particular strengths and weaknesses en route to finding your true passion. Thirteen years in, and I
am still in the process of realizing those aspects of the vast field of journalism which really inspire me. I am open to learn, eager to explore and always looking to improve upon those skills I originally honed all those decades ago. I believe this process is never complete; those who have worked in a particular field for twice as long as I have can surely attest to this fact. Who’s to say that anyone has to stay with one particular venture for a lifetime anyway? The world is constantly evolving, as are we; and the nature of most careers tends to necessitate a versatility that didn’t always exist prior. We all have untapped skills to be utilized, curiosities to indulge and talents to cultivate. So, here’s to 13, a number like any other, if you ask me. May it signify all the experience gained thus far, and the adventures yet to unfold.

Cardboard Creations Rocky Point’s Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School fourth-grade students in Allison Licata’s class recently transformed commonly discarded items into creative inventions. Seeking inspiration from the YouTube video,
“Caine’s Arcade,” the students applied what they have been learning in science about simple machines to create an arcade game using the recycled cardboard boxes. They worked in teams to create working simple
machines and some even created complex machines. “It was very impressive what they accomplished,” said Ms. Licata. “The students did an outstanding job and we had a lot of fun.”

ExploraVision Finalists Three Village Central School District’s Ward Melville High School juniors Kian Abbott, Jeffrey Casey, Darren Tung and Abhinav Yadav were selected as one of six regional finalists in the ExploraVision competition for their project, “Polychiral Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotube Solar Cells.” These students were honored for their successes during a recent in-school presentation, where they
learned they will go on to compete for a chance to win a trip to Washington, D.C. and a $10,000 U.S. savings bond. The students’ project creates efficient solar cells made from multi-walled carbon nanotubes with varying chiralities. Carbon nanotubes exhibit the photoelectric effect, so they can be used to create a solar cell. When CNTs are produced they have differing structures,
which is referred to as chirality. The different chiralities absorb different wavelengths of light. The MWCNTs used would have chiralities specifically tuned to absorb the different wavelengths of sunlight resulting in a highly efficient solar cell. As regional winners, each student was presented with a commemorative plaque and large external hard drive.

Every day, they have a different school drop off children at their location to benefit from their organization; they also offer group programs, individual lessons, corporate workshops and a program specifically designed for military members. If you are someone who faces any sort of disability or an emotional or vulnerable problem, please visit their website to learn more about how they can help you - and don’t hesitate to get help! Volunteers are the backbone of PalO-Mine, and there are many different ways to get involved. All volunteers must be at least 16 years of age, attend a volunteer orientation (orientations are held monthly), complete a training program and be available to volunteer a minimum of four hours per week. Some ways you may volunteer are: working directly with children and adults in lessons, working with therapy horses and performing barn chores, fundraising, and helping with property enhancement and landscaping. Pal-O-Mine has two major fundraising events that are coming up in June. One is their 16th annual Day at the Races, which will be on June 8th at the Belmont Race Track. This is held the day before the Belmont Stakes and is a wonderful outing, offering lunch, a premium open bar and door prizes. Their 10th annual Golf Outing, Par Fore the Horse, will be held on June 25th at Southward Ho Country Club in Bay Shore. This will include golfing, brunch, course refreshments, an open bar, a cocktail hour, dinner, gifts and prizes. Both of these events have sponsorship opportunities and are open to the public (tickets must be purchased). Lastly, Pal-O-Mine features a Wish List on their website, which lists items they use every day that you can donate! It all started with a good book... As I sat down with Lisa Gatti, CEO & Founder of Pal-O-Mine Equestrian, Inc., I had the privilege to learn about what her organization does to help those in need, as well as how it all began. PalO-Mine Equestrian is a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations. Lisa’s mother was a special education teacher and her father worked for a book publishing company. She was greatly influenced by both of their professions. Lisa grew up knowing she loved horses, but she really wanted to become a teacher and work with children in need. Her father would often send her books while she was away at college, and one day she received a book titled Palomino, by Danielle Steel. As she read through the pages, she became inspired by what was written about: a ranch that was formed to help people through equine therapy. From that point on, she was certain that was exactly what she wanted to do with her life. Through persistence, hard work and a passion to serve others, Lisa Gatti opened Pal-O-Mine in 1995 as a 501(C)(3) non-profit. Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week - and they continue to grow today! This organization sits on eight acres, with a 20-stall barn, handicapped accessible bathrooms, a new 100’ x 120’ indoor arena with state-ofthe-art footing and a rider hoisting system, and three outdoor riding arenas. They help an unbelievable amount of people, and their work is truly heartwarming. Individuals of all ages are welcome to take part in the programs they offer. They operate with five full-time employees, 35 independent contractors and 80 volunteers a week. Their riding instructors have experience with the following diagnoses: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Sensory Processing Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Neurological Disorders, Cerebral Palsy,
personnel blog. Connor is a varsity lacrosse player and has a black belt in martial arts. He will attend Williams College to study economics and philosophy with a concentration in global studies. He would like to combine what he learned in the school’s Human Rights Club to be a change agent in the world and focus on human rights abuses, trafficking and helping those affected by natural disasters. “It’s important to me to do everything with passion,” Connor said. His words of wisdom to others are to “take pride in everything you do, from homework to college applications, be proud of your accomplishments.” Kyle, who states that everything is an opportunity to learn, has

Five students from Rocky Point High School have been recognized for their outstanding athletic accomplishments by being named to Newsday’s AllLong Island teams for this past winter sports season. Rocky Point wrestlers, brothers Anthony Sciotto, a senior, and Logan Sciotto, a sophomore, were named to Newsday’s All-Long Island Second team. Samantha Ferrara, a junior, was named Suffolk Cheerleader of the Year and a member of the All-Long
Island team. Julia Buckley, was named to the All-Long Island Second team for cheerleading. Brandon Epp was also recognized as a member of the Section XI State Champion team for bowling. Cheerleading coach Anna Spallina was named Suffolk County Coach of the Year. Following each competition season, Newsday staff members select Long Island high school students from each sport to be recognized
as All-Long Island team members. “It’s an amazing honor,” Samantha said. “It proves if you work hard all the time, it will work out in the end.” In addition to the honors from Newsday, the Suffolk County Wrestling Coaches Association named Darren Goldstein the Suffolk County, Division I Coach of the Year and on April 20, Darren was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.
Support Staff Honored The Port Jefferson School District Board of Education recognized two Port Jefferson Middle School’s staff members for their positive and productive contributions to the school and their high level of service for
students and their families. Cited as the school’s dream team by Principal Dr. Robert Neidig, administrative assistants Kathy Hanley and Rosalie Loizos were honored for their devotion to the school and community.
“They are very much involved in all of the successes at the Middle School,” Neidig said of the heightened level of professionalism, work ethic and commitment of both women.

In celebration of Earth Day (April 22nd), the Town held its annual “Free Tree Seedling, Mulch and Compost Giveaway” on April 20th at Town Hall as part of Supervisor Ed Romaine’s “Greening Brookhaven” initiative. The goal of the initiative
is to distribute and plant 10,000 tree seedlings by 2020, the same goal date for the Green Energy and Sustainability initiative for Town facilities. The free mulch and compost will continue to be available at various Town locations while supplies

On Saturday, April 14th, Legislator Anker attended the 2018 Holistic Healing Workshop for Veterans with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Mild Traumatic Injuries at the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Rocky Point. Hosted by the OperationInitiative Foundation, the workshop brought awareness and support to veterans and families of Veterans suffering from PTSD. mission is to provide awareness, information, services, and support to veterans living on Long Island diagnosed with PTSD. Founded by Louis Falco, Operation-Initiative seeks to continuously advance its programs through collaborations with nonprofit organizations and forprofit businesses to explore innovative solutions for problems faced by veterans and their caregivers. Stamp Out Hunger Island Harvest Food Bank is once again teaming up with the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) and the United States Postal Service (USPS) for the 26th annual Stamp Out Hunger campaign on Saturday, May 12th. As the nation’s largest single-day food drive, postal carriers across the country will collect nonperishable food items donated by generous postal customers. On Long
Island, all food collected will help Island Harvest Food Bank to provide supplemental food support to more than 300,000 Long Islanders who are at risk of hunger and food insecurity. “Participating in Stamp Out Hunger is easy,” says Randi Shubin Dresner, president and CEO of Island Harvest Food Bank. “Simply leave nonperishable food items in a bag next to your mailbox before your
regularly scheduled mail delivery on Saturday, May 12th, and your USPS letter carrier will do the rest.” Nonperishable food items needed include canned goods, cereal, pasta, rice, boxed juices and shelf-stable milk (please, no glass items). All food donated on Long Island will help replenish Island Harvest Food Bank’s network of food pantries, soup kitchens and other emergency feeding
programs in Nassau and Suffolk counties. “Every donation, no matter how small, helps our neighbors who are struggling to put food on their tables,” said Randi Shubin Dresner. “The National Association of Letter Carriers is pleased to partner with Island Harvest Food Bank and support its efforts in addressing the problem of hunger on Long Island,” said Walter

1.5 billion pounds of food nationally to help address the issue of hunger in America. Last year, Stamp Out Hunger netted 71 million pounds of food in 10,000 cities and towns, and in all 50 states plus the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands. In 2017, Long Islanders donated 268,582 pounds of food to Stamp Out Hunger, which supplemented 223,818 meals.
Curiosity about robots at a young age led Rocky Point High School senior Kyle Markland to save money for his first robotics kit and from there a spark was ignited – a spark that lead to Kyle joining the district’s robotics teams and, most recently, pen a book about the topic. “Building Smart LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 Robots,” published in April, was an opportunity to put together all his knowledge
in a comprehensive guide that covers building and programming techniques used by professional engineers. Kyle highlights six projects – an objecttracking tank, a boxclimbing robot, an interactive robotic shark, a quirky bipedal robot, a speedy remote-control race car and a GPS-navigating robot – and explains the features that enable them to make intelligent decisions.
“With all the accomplishments that Kyle has in so many areas, it is incredible that he was able to achieve this goal as well,” said Rocky Point High School Principal Susan Crossan. Passionate and enthusiastic about his work, Kyle said, “I hope to inspire others to embrace this robotics platform and gain the skills to build and program a smart robot.”

Unplugging to Connect
Minnesauke Elementary School students and staff in the Three Village Central School District are taking part in an unplugged challenge this April — an initiative designed to reduce digital media usage and increase time connecting with themselves, family and friends. The weeklong program – which was based on a national movement – focused on teaching students about alternative activities to promote healthy lifestyles. Activities were designed by a building level committee and were introduced during
students’ health, library and physical education lessons. Additionally, students took part in a seven-day art challenge, were invited to an evening event at a local SkyZone trampoline park and were encouraged to create a family contract setting acceptable parameters for digital usage. “I feel that there is a real need to address the topic of the overuse of digital media by children, especially as many are spending more and more time plugged in and less time connecting with people and experiencing the world around them

Polar Bear Splash Splashers were greeted by clear skies and sharks at AHRC Suffolk's Annual Polar Bear Splash on Saturday, April 21st at the Bay Shore Marina. Orlando from 94.3 The Shark showed his support for AHRC Suffolk by splashing into spring as well as Finn the SCCC Sharks Spirit Team mascot! Over one hundred people from local schools and communities gathered to help raise money and POLAR BEAR SPLASH - Over a hundred Splashers braved the icy bay to raise awareness for AHRC money for AHRC Suffolk.
Suffolk's Mission. Many Splashers meandered around the beach before the actual splash listening to music and enjoying the new playground at the Marina! However, when it came time to go all in there was no shortage of splashers willing to dive into the icy waters of the Bay! All proceeds from this event directly benefit AHRC Suffolk's programs and services throughout their 42 facilities in Suffolk
County. AHRC Suffolk is non-profit organization that provides programs and services for children and adults with intellectual and other developmental disabilities. vehicles, mainly diesel buses and gasoline vans, serving 18 school districts. The event was hosted by the Islip Town School Board Association, compromised of board of education members from districts throughout the Town of Islip. “We’re very excited to be at a point at which this cutting edge bus is ready to go into service. This can be a win-win for both the taxpayers and the environment,” said Sue Schnebel, Superintendent of Islip School District. Another attendee was Fred Koelbel, Director of Facilities and Transportation for Port Jefferson School District. “What a message students receive when they ride on a bus like this. There are messages about sustainability, green energy, and messages about the future. This becomes something they are exposed to every day on their way to and from school,” he said. While electric buses are more costly, members of the Islip Town School Board Association learned about grants and funding approaches that may be available which can dramatically bring down the initial $350,000 price tag.

More than 50 school district leaders got their first look at what many say is the future of pupil transportation – the first U.S. made all-electric, zero-emissions school bus. Currently on an inaugural cross-country tour, this battery-powered prototype bus made a stop in Bay Shore, Long Island, where school board members, superintendents and transportation officials participated in a two-hour introduction and test ride of the bus. The event was hosted by Suffolk Transportation Service, Suffolk County’s largest pupil transportation provider. The bus was built by Blue Bird Corporation, one of three main school bus makers in the U.S., and its batteries and drivetrain were developed by Adomani Electric. “Electric and hybrid buses will have a big role in the future of pupil transportation on Long Island. Our school districts already know this and have been asking us when an electric bus will be available,” said John Corrado, President and CEO of Suffolk Transportation Service. “In the last several years, we began to develop our own hybrid vehicle and also encouraged Blue Bird, one
