As part of their unit on mail and maps, the class received letters, packages and postcards from around the world. The students used the information located on and within the packages as they explored the postal service. A fun time was had by all.

From Alaska to Florida, and from Maine to Hawaii, on Saturday, May 9th, U.S. Postal Service letter carriers across the country will visit homes and businesses in every city, suburb and town in America to collect food for what is the nation’s largest food drive. “This is it. The day to make a difference. If ever you’ve thought about helping your community, the time is now. Be a part of something big,” asserts Randi Shubin Dresner, President & CEO, Island Harvest. Island Harvest, Long Island’s largest hunger relief organization, feeding and supporting 316,000 Long Islanders annually, is proud to announce that it has been chosen by the National Association of Letter Carriers and the U.S. Postal Service to be the Long Island region’s sole recipient of its “Stamp Out Hunger” Food Drive taking

place on Long Island, and nationally, on Saturday May 9th. Here’s how it works. Long Islanders are being asked to set out non-perishable food by their mailboxes on May 9th, which will then be picked up by their letter carriers while delivering the day’s mail. The letter carriers will then deliver their collected food to an Island Harvest “Stamp Out Hunger” warehouse – where an army of volunteers will sort food, to be distributed immediately to Island Harvest’s network of 570 member agencies, including food pantries and soup kitchens throughout Long Island. “While the letter carriers do all of the day’s heavy lifting, Stamp Out Hunger makes donating easy. All people have to do is leave their donation by their mailbox,” asserts Randi Shubin Dresner, President & CEO, Island Harvest.

“Our goal is for every family to donate something, and let their letter carriers do the rest. It’s that simple.” “The harsh winter weather this year presented Long Islanders experiencing hunger with many challenges, including pay loss due to the weather, making it an even more difficult time to put food on the table,” explained Dresner. “This, coupled with the usual springtime need for food following the depletion of our holiday donations, makes this year’s Stamp Out Hunger food drive essential.” Since the inception of Stamp Out Hunger in 1992, over 1.3 billion pounds of food have been collected by letter carriers in the United States. Locally, last year Long Islanders donated more than 326,000 pounds of food and this year, Island Harvest expects a similar amount to be collected by letter carriers on 2,219

Embrace The Change By: Jamie Lynn Ryan It’s amazing the degree to which our media consumption has changed as a society through the years. In the last decade alone, from the time I graduated from C.W. Post’s Journalism program, social media has quite literally taken over – for better or worse. What was once perfectly satisfactory to read in the next morning’s paper now must be transmitted instantly across a host of media, in some cases, at the expense of accuracy. While this isn’t exactly a unique realization, it was brought to new light at the recent Society of Professional Journalists Region I Conference that I attended last week at Hofstra University. Again and again,

the same theme was revisited – how can we, as journalists, learn to be so-called “experts” on everything, able to take on any task asked of us on the fly, all in an effort to transmit to the masses before the millions of others out there doing the same thing? It’s a tall order, one that, just 10 years ago, wasn’t quite so relevant. Couple that with the fact that literally anyone with a smartphone can capture an image or video, add some copy and a sound bite and, theoretically, paint him/ herself as a journalist. All it takes is the vast landscape of the Internet to take a tidbit to the masses via Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, whatever; and, before you know it, you have a viral sensation that, just minutes prior, was

nothing more than gossip. Amazing, isn’t it? Take that to the next level, and it is nearly impossible to steer clear of spoiler alerts for your favorite TV shows, movies, books, anything… if you’re not planning on watching it live, you had best engage in a self-imposed media blackout until your DVR is warmed up. This, from the person who decided to wait an hour or so before catching up on last night’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy. Enough said. Ten years ago, that wouldn’t have been a problem. Like it or not, this is the world we now live in. The sooner we embrace it, learn to live with it and adapt our lives to the changing media landscape, the better.

Stamping Out Hunger

Just in time for the grand opening of its 46th season on April 8th, the Long Island Game Farm showed visitors its newly acquired alpacas as part of its expanding animal exhibit. The Game Farm received the animals from the Ceruti family of Shoreham, who have been longtime friends of the Game Farm. The Cerutis donated their backyard pet alpaca herd, consisting of Rosie and her yearling Robbie; Sophie and her yearling Rusty; Gracie and her yearling Zoe; and one female named Melanie. Alpacas are a domesticated species of the South American camelid, resembling a small Llama in appearance, but considerably smaller. They have a silky fleece that covers their bodies and are shorn each year, producing between five and eight pounds of fleece annually. Some of their colors are black, white, brown and gray. Their wool is water-repellent and is used for making coats, sweaters and blankets. They are able to live in semi-arid habitats and are native to South American countries, including Peru, northern Bolivia, Ecuador and Chile. They also have cloven hooves

that help them negotiate steep mountainous terrain. Alpacas are herbivores, their diets consisting mainly of hay, grass and ferns. They are also known as ruminants (or cud-chewing animals). They have a height of 40 inches and weigh from 100 to 175 pounds. An alpaca can live up to 20 years. They are now living happily at the Game Farm and are looking forward to seeing guests and eating out of their hands. In the spring, they will have their coats shorn to make them more comfortable in the summer months. Melinda Novak, CoOwner, Long Island Game Farm will be using the alpaca fleece to make nuno-felted scarves, which will be for sale at the Game Farm and other local venues. Profits will be donated to The Butterfly Effect Project of Riverhead and Bellport, an organization close to Ms. Novak and Game Farm staff member Scarlett Green, who volunteer their time with the organization. The Butterfly Effect Project is a nonprofit organization that empowers underprivileged girls ages nine to 13 by giving them the tools to assist them in

achieving academic and emotional stability and a self-confident future, which will bring forth a generation of women who are strong, independent and knowledgeable. The group’s mission is to ensure that every girl who is enrolled in the program has a fair chance to broaden their horizons while eliminating the normal obstacles, such as social mobility, cultural differences and finances. The Suffolk County Legislature honored longtime county employee Carolyn E. Fahey on her retirement after more than 35 years of service to Suffolk County. She began her career as a Secretary in the County Executive’s Office on January 21st, 1980. She became a County Executive Assistant I, on May 21st, 1984. On December 1st, 1986 she became an Intergovernmental Relations Analyst, serving a total of seven years in the County

Executive’s office. She transferred to the Health Department on February 9th, 1987 remaining an Intergovernmental Relations Analyst I. On October 1st, 1990 she became a Grants Analyst at the Health Department. Then, on October 25, 1993, she transferred to the Department of Economic Development with the title of Assistant Intergovernmental Relations Coordinator. She received the title of Intergovernmental Relations Coordinator on

March 21st, 2003 and has served in that position ever since. State Champions The countless hours Ward Melville High School gymnasts Cydney Crasa and Katie Bowe spent it the gym paid off big time this year as the dedicated athletes earned top honors at the New York State Gymnastics Championship. Cydney came in first place on the vault and beam, earning her a gold medal and champion status in both events. This is Cydney’s third individual state championship

Finalists Selected The Long Island Museum in Stony Brook has selected the finalists in its annual the juried art competition/exhibition. Landscapes: Wish You Were Here, is a companion exhibition to the two main art exhibitions currently on view - Ansel Adams, Early Works and American Horizons, East to West. Amateur and professional artists across Long Island were invited to submit up to three works for the exhibition, which will be on display in the Visitors Center from May 9th through May 31st. A panel made up of museum staff members selected 74 final entries for the show out of more than 300 that were

submitted. Kenise Barnes, Director and Owner of Kenise Barnes Fine Art in Larchmont will select the cash-prize winners on May 8th and an artist’s reception will be held for all finalists on May 17th from 2 to 4 p.m. The reception is open to the public and is free with regular museum admission. Kenise Barnes Fine Art was established in 1994 and has grown steadily over two decades. The gallery occupies 2300 square feet of street-level space in Larchmont, NY. Barnes and her staff organize ten concept-driven group and solo exhibitions a year at the gallery, and Barnes curates exhibitions for museums and public

spaces. Long Island Heart Ball The American Heart Association’s Long Island Annual Heart Ball will be celebrating its 52nd year on Friday, May 8th, at a new venue: the Museum of American Armor – Old Bethpage Restoration Village. (NAPSI)—For many, cats and kittens can be an almost endless source of fascination. It’s not uncommon for people to confess they can spend hours watching cute cat videos on the Internet and sharing cat photos online. Unfortunately, it seems this online fascination with cats is not translating into real-life adoptions. Every year, an estimated 8 million pets enter U.S. shelters, and approximately 4 million of them are euthanized because there are not enough homes. A recent PetSmart Charities survey of people’s perceptions of cats found that the negative opinions

some people have of cats are hurting their image. For instance, when asked about the personality and behavioral traits of cats, respondents overwhelmingly described cats as curious, stubborn, moody and aloof. Dogs, on the other hand, were described in much more positive terms, such as friendly, loyal, protective and loving.
