Stony Brook Students Participating in National Clinical Trial to Test Covid-19 Transmission

A national study with the Moderna Covid-19 vaccine to see how effective it is against preventing spread of the disease to others is underway and will involve hundreds of Stony Brook University students. Twenty university campuses nationwide, including Stony Brook University, are involved in the Covid-19 Prevention
Network (CoVPN) study. Over the coming months the study will enroll 12,000 students. Half of the students involved will receive the vaccine upon their enrollment, and the other half four months later. The study is called PreventCovidU and managed by the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle.

“It’s critical to understand how effective the vaccine is in preventing spread of infection in this population. We need to understand how often individuals in this age group become positive, what is the level of virus in their nose and how often they pass virus to others,” says Sharon Nachman, MD, principal investigator of the Stony Brook arm
of the study, and Chief of the Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital. Dr. Nachman expects some 400 Stony Brook students will be enrolled in the study. Recruitment has begun, and students will be monitored throughout the duration of the study. Enrollees need to be between 18 to 26 years of

Upon participation, a computerized process is activated to randomly choose which group a participant is in – the immediate vaccination group or delayed (4 months later) group. The delayed arm of the study is needed
so that the researchers can tell how well the Covid-19 vaccine works in preventing infection and transmission to others who are vaccinated compared to those who are not yet vaccinated. Students who participate will have to swab their noses daily for testing and provide three blood samples as part of the study.

New York Health Expands Growth and Opens New Office

Powerful Reflections As the world prepared to mark the one-year milestone from when the World Health Organization declared a global pandemic and schools shifted from in-person to fully virtual instruction in 2020, the fifth grade students in Kate Hunter’s class at Minnesauke Elementary School took time to reflect on all that has happened
during the past 365 days. Each of the students’ written reflections were showcased on a bulletin board outside the classroom, in hopes of encouraging others to take time to reflect upon this past year as well. Included in the students’ reflections were mentions of gratitude, hope, the power of partnerships,
resiliency, empathy and newfound talents. “When we look back at this historic milestone, we acknowledge all we have lost but, as these students clearly teach us, we also marvel at all that humanity was able to see and become,” said Ms. Hunter.

The Port Jefferson School District congratulates the varsity boys cross-country team on their win at the divisional meet at Sunken Meadow State Park. The team was led by seniors Grant Samara and Brian

Port Jefferson Girls Soccer Team Kicks For Cancer
The Port Jefferson School District’s girls varsity soccer team not only knows how to play an excellent game, its members understand that they have the power to make a difference in the lives of others. The team closed out the season on April 10 with the Kicks for Cancer game. Although
the tradition was a little different than in years past, the girls still raised awareness and funds that will benefit Long Island individuals and families affected by cancer. The team raised $400 for Kicks for Cancer, a local initiative that combines athletics and fundraising for cancer research, and has raised more than $1 million since
its inception. The girls also closed out the season with a 3-0 victory over their opponent, Mattituck/ Southold/Greenport. The district congratulates the student-athletes, coach Taylor Forstell and assistant coach Logan Hoffmann on their efforts and a great season.

Contractors For Kids (CFK) is a non-profit organization, which was founded for the purpose of providing assistance to families in Long Island communities. Their goal is to assist children and their families overcome obstacles that have unfortunately changed or have impacted their lives through the sickness, injury or death of a child. They are committed to this cause and want to give hope and reassurance for the futures of Long Islanders. CFK was founded in 2005 by Kevin Harney and Alan Nahmias of Stalco Construction. Kevin and Alan, both long-time philanthropists, saw the growing need for financial assistance in our communities and knew that something more needed to be done. Through random acts of kindness, they were slowly changing the lives of others, however they thirsted to make more change so they decided to form this non-profit, Contractors For Kids. Their organization runs on donations only and is volunteer based, they have no employees. One family at a time, they make sure that the financial hardship brought on by sickness, injury or death does not destroy an already hurting family. Whether it is to pay a phone bill or a mortgage payment, they want to be there to help. Since 2005, CFK has given out more than 3 MILLION DOLLARS to help local Long Islanders. Here are some of the areas they’ve helped others financially: Rent, Mortgage Payments, Oil Deliveries, Utility Bills, Food, Transportation To & From Hospitals, Co-Payments, Medications & Funeral Expenses. So how do you qualify to get help? It’s quite simple. If you can prove that you are struggling financially because of the sickness, injury or death of a child, you live on Long Island (in Nassau or Suffolk County), and you have

Helen Keller Services (HKS), a 501 (C)(3) nonprofit offering programs and services through its
two divisions: Helen Keller National Center for DeafBlind Youths and Adults (HKNC) and Helen Keller
Services for the Blind (HKSB), today announced it will host its Second Annual Helen’s 5K Run. Walk.
Rocky Point Students Participate In Kids Heart Challenge after-school event where they jumped rope in return for monetary pledges from family and friends. This year, Ms. Amoscato created an online version, and the staff, families and greater Rocky Point community contributed more than $11,500. Ms. Amoscato pointed to the student excitement year after year and looks forward to being together again for an in-person event. In her now 19 years of putting together the
challenge, JAE has raised $184,748. “Our efforts truly make a difference,” she said. The student with the highest fundraising amount was fourth grader Casey Stengel, who raised more than $2,000 in honor of his younger brother Chase. Another fourth grader, Leigha Blandi, was the second-highest fundraiser with more than $1,525 in donations.

Participants register online and then record their runs with a timer or smartphone app such as Strava. After the run, participants update their time on the website for credit. In addition to raising funds for HKS, participants can compete to win a variety

The Port Jefferson School District has not missed a beat and has again been ranked among the National Association of Music Merchants Foundation’s Best Communities for Music Education in America. The honor acknowledges schools and districts across the country for their dedication to and support for music education as part of the core curriculum. This is the 15th consecutive year that Port Jefferson – one of only 686 school districts
across the nation named in 2021 – has received the prestigious national recognition. The district boasts numerous vocal, band and orchestral performing groups, and students have numerous opportunities to perform within the community. Although many partnerships with Stony Brook University, local orchestras and other community groups were put on hold due to the pandemic this year, the students and music
educators found innovative and resourceful ways to present their music. “This year, music played such a significant role in our students’ lives,” said Dr. Michael Caravello, the district’s director of music and fine arts. “We are grateful to our music educators for keeping music education at the forefront in our three schools and thank our dedicated students for their creativity and joy in embracing this craft.”
