Port Jefferson Middle School seventh-grade social studies class won the chance to name one of Beth Stern’s foster cats by raising the most money during a student council fundraiser for Bianca’s Furry Friends. The students, who are in Philip Giannusa’s class, secured the win after raising $403 and named the cat “Petey.” The name was selected as a tribute to science teacher Pete Burawa, who will be retiring at the end of the school year.

Healing Heart 5K Walk The American Heart Association’s 7th Annual Healing Heart 5K Run/ Walk will be held on Sunday, May 15th, on the property of the beautiful Pugliese Vineyards in the heart of the Long Island wine country in Cutchogue. More than 700 runners are expected. Day of event registration begins at
8:00 a.m., with the fun run for children 10 and under beginning at 10:00 a.m. and the 3.1 mile off road race beginning at 10:15 a.m. Following the race, the awards ceremony will take place at 11:15 a.m. with awards being given to the top male and female runners along with the top runners in
various age categories. A health expo will also be available during the event open to all participants. The Healing Heart 5K hopes to raise awareness that heart disease is the number one killer of men and women across the country and here on Long Island. The event creates a culture of health and physical activity, giving

I am thankful for my mom and dad. They are the water and sunlight to my plant. They’re the only true role models in my life. They pay the bills, put food in my stomach, and put clothes on my back. They are the most important things in my life. I am thankful for my mom. She is the star in my galaxy. She turned me into the nice gentlemen I am today. She fought through mental illness
two times. She taught how to act respectfully around people she puts in charge of me. She is the main reason I love to be alive. Also, if it weren’t for her, I wouldn’t be in Pal football. I wouldn’t be able deal with my grandfather’s recent trip to the E.R. I wouldn’t be able to keep going in life. Those are many reasons I am thankful for my mom. I am thankful for my dad. He’s the anchor in our ship. My dad makes
sure that the family is stable. He taught me how to defend myself, to ride a bike, and to be safe on the Internet. He makes me happy when I’m depressed. Also, he tells me what my dead grandfather expected of me. He taught me to be respectful to him and to the elderly. He gives donations to foundations for breast cancer and autism. Those are reason why I’m thankful for my dad.

The night kicked off at the Charles B. Wang Center at Stony Brook University, where these creative bras were all on display and guests were able to put in their bid during the silent auction. The reception started with former New York Jets great Marty Lyons giving the keynote address, sharing his personal experiences with lovedones who battled cancer and thoughts on why fundraising efforts and events like “Bodacious Bras” are important in finding a cure. The auction gavel hit and the live bidding began with a bang as NFL alum Erik Coleman’s bra was auctioned off for $1,500. Between the auctions and ticket sales, the event raised nearly $35,000. The proceeds will support patient programs at Stony Brook University Cancer Center. “We are so excited that
this year’s event was so successful,” said Linda Bily, Director, Cancer Patient Advocacy & Community Outreach, Stony Brook University Cancer Center, “the funds support with all of the little things that actually help make the journey through cancer a little bit easier - like support groups, educational materials, transportation, wigs, and peer mentors.” More than 270 guests attended the event on Thursday evening. Top bid, of $2,300, went for “Hometown Hero,” which was created by Eileen Constantouris with the support of NY Mets Pitcher, Steven Matz. Additional awards went to the “NY Rangers Legend” for “Best in Show”; “Dream Catcher” for ‘Most Inspirational’; and “In Honor of our Spuds” for the famous “Booby Prize.”

They were bold, beautiful and bodacious; and the over 75 unique pieces of “bra art” were auctioned off for a good cause on the evening of Thursday, April 14th at the “Bodacious Bras for a Cure” event. Caregivers, patients, survivors, healthcare workers and artists from local high schools, the North Shore Art Guild, Brookhaven Arts Council and LI Craft Guild were among some of the designers who crafted these empowering pieces of art for the event. Others were crafted or inspired by celebrity contestants like actor Ralph Macchio, NY Mets pitcher Steven Matz, former NY Jets Marty Lyons and Erik Coleman, Victoria’s Secret Angel Lindsay Ellingson, Radio personality Fingers from WBAB, the NY Yankees, the NY Islanders, and the NY Rangers.

And people, people who leave an indelible imprint on our lives, one that simply does not fade with the passage of time. How lucky we are to have those memories, those associations. How deeply we should treasure them… Time is the one thing we never seem to have quite enough of. It’s a precious AWARENESS WALK HELD - On Saturday, April 16th, Suffolk County Legislator commodity, one often Sarah Anker joined Councilwoman Valerie Cartwright, President of Sarcoidosis of Long Island Frank Rivera and the many members and supporters of the not-for-profit taken for granted right organization Sarcoidosis of Long Island at the 2nd Annual Sarcoidosis Awareness up until the moment that Walk held at the North Shore Heritage Park in Mount Sinai. The walk was an effort to it runs out. Such is the bittersweet nature of life; the great unknown. May we all be so fortunate to have memories worth treasuring along the way.

The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) will be hosting its 5th Annual Tee-Off for Our Teens tournament at the Sebonack Golf Club, Southampton, on Tuesday, May 17th, 2016. Seventy-two golfers will have the opportunity to play on one of Long Island’s most exclusive courses, enjoy spectacular views overlooking The Great Peconic Bay and help to support the programs and services LICADD provides to all Long Islanders. Sebonack was the host of the 2013 U.S. Women’s Open. The course opened in 2006 was designed by progolfers, Jack Nicklaus and Tom Doak and is adjacent to the National Golf Links of America and Shinnecock Hills Golf Club. Fourteen Setauket Elementary School students bravely shed their locks this April during St. Baldrick’s events, charity fundraisers committed to support research for cures for childhood cancer. During the event, the students volunteered with countless others from across the region to join the fight against childhood cancers by selflessly shaving their heads; an action meant to be symbolic as many cancer sufferers often experience hair loss during treatment.
The annual event, which began in 2000 in Manhattan, is held each March-April in locations around the nation. To date, nearly $26.7 million has been raised for the cause in 2016 alone. The Ward Melville Heritage Organization has been offering Discovery Wetlands Cruises since 1995 aboard its 27-passenger pontoon boat, carrying guests from the calm waters of Stony Brook Harbor to the wetlands at West Meadow Creek. A naturalist is on board to guide passengers
through this exceptional experience embracing ecology, geology and history. The cruise also includes information on how Native Americans first settled here. Adventurers and sightseers are encouraged to bring their binoculars for a close-up view of plant and animal life and their cameras to preserve cruise memories. WMHO now includes photography cruises with a 45 minute to 1 hour discussion with an expert from Berger Bros. to discuss techniques to capture the best landscape and wildlife images out on the water. Trained in Technique A week after the district’s Drug Free Community Forum filled every seat in the Rocky Point High School auditorium, more than 70 community members returned to the building to participate in a free Narcan training event offered by the school district. Narcan, an inhalant used to reverse the symptoms of an opioid overdose, has become a subject of national media reports in recent years. The medicine is found to block the opioid receptors in the brain and potentially provide time for emergency responders to save the life of the overdosing individual. During the event, representatives from the Suffolk County Department of Health Services’
Division of Emergency Medical Services spoke about how Narcan works medically and instructed the audience on how to properly administer the treatment. They explained that overdoses are not limited to just those who experiment with opioids, but rather can happen to anyone – including the elderly who mistakenly take a double dose of a prescription or even a young child who gets access to the drug through a medicine cabinet at home. Attendees were also informed of New York State’s Good Samaritan Law, which provides protection from charge and prosecution for drug and alcohol possession for the victim and those who seek help during an
overdose. Upon completing the training program, each individual received an overdose prevention kit containing two prefilled Narcan devices and a card certifying them as trained to administer the substance. “There is no substitute for calling 911, but through this valuable program, more than 70 individuals from our community are now equipped to save the life of someone experiencing an overdose,” said Amy Agnesini, program coordinator and district director for health, physical education, intramurals and athletics. “They are now considered members of the first responder team, and that is a very commendable act.”

Special Career Education high school students and three and four-year-old preschoolers were treated to a Cornell Cooperative Extension presentation, Birds of a Feather. The presentation included a story, a craft, and a hands-on experience with a chicken and a duck. Agricultural Educator June DeVitto brought a domestic chicken, Butterscotch, and an Indian Runner Duck, Fudgecake, to the Early Childhood Education
(ECE) Program at Islip Career Center in Eastern Suffolk BOCES. DeVitto has been an educator with Cornell Cooperative Extension for over 22 years and is amazed at how many people have never touched a chicken or a duck. “The presentation is geared to the preschoolers but it is a learning experience for everyone,” she said. ECE Teacher Rachel Grodofsky said, “This presentation offers something to both the high school and preschool
audience. It highlights comprehension skills. The high school students learn how to work with very inquisitive young minds; best of all, everyone gets to use their five senses.” High school students in the ECE Program are preparing for careers working with children. They are getting career ready to be camp counselors, work in nursery schools, or as child care providers. Grodofsky said, “These high school students are learning how to be effective classroom leaders.” June DeVitto wanted everyone to learn how to handle animals properly and to be gentle. “Kids grow up and they want a pet,” she said. “I want them to learn about the animal world and gain a respect for life. I want them to use their senses and I hope the program heightens their awareness of other things that are around them in the world.”

Growing a Rain Garden animals’ and plants’ need for clean water, how much water is wasted daily and the concept of creating rain gardens. These spaces collect water from storms and individuals use the liquid to feed plants and gardens. Inspired by the conversation, the students are now working to create their own rain garden in the school’s courtyard. To prepare, they fashioned three-dimensional models using cardstock and
straw downspouts. They then tested their models using spray bottles and observed how the water traveled from the roof of the building into the rain catcher. This May, the students will plant close to 80 species of plants in the school’s courtyard with the help of Mr. Cappellino, which they will maintain with a new school rain garden.
