he Port Jefferson Middle School Science Olympiad team placed 23rd out of 140 schools in the New York State Science Olympiad Competition. The event, which was held at Greece Arcadia High School in Rochester, N.Y., consisted of the top schools from 11 regions across New York State. Since its inaugural year in 2011, Taste of Tuckahoe continues to be a popular event with area residents and attendance growing each year. Last year’s celebration drew over 450 people, and this year’s turnout is sure to be even larger with the addition of the VIP hour, and Chef Christian Mir, proprietor of Stone Creek Inn, an East End favorite for 17 years. Mir honed his culinary skills in restaurants in both France and the U.S., and his restaurant has been hailed as a “culinary tour de force” by Zagat, and a “sit up and take notice experience” by the New York Times. As in previous years, all proceeds from the Taste of Tuckahoe will benefit the children of Tuckahoe School, and will be used toward enhancing their education.

Musings By: Jamie Lynn Ryan There are moments that stand out in your mind as if they happened yesterday, so crystal clear do they remain years later. Walking around C.W. Post’s campus several weeks ago, I was reminded of the many afternoons spent sitting out on the lawn with my Philosophy class, reading Leaves Of Grass by Walt Whitman. The lush foliage, the warmth of the sun, the cool spring breeze, the words of Long Island’s very own Whitman… those are images that never fade. There were the countless afternoons spent walking the “Chipmunk Trail,”

through the Arboretum, savoring the peace and tranquility between classes, hoping to spy some sort of wildlife frolicking between the academic buildings – perhaps a black squirrel rooting through someone’s discarded lunch bag, a sight that was spied on numerous occasions. Then there were the many days relaxing in the Honors Lounge, reading, snacking, socializing and, most importantly, forging friendships that are still going strong, ten years later. Oh, and the classes, of course. Can’t forget those. All kidding aside, there were many classes over the course of my four years at Post

that left an indelible mark. I credit my photography class for introducing me to a whole new outlet for artistic expression, back in the days when digital cameras were still fairly new and handdeveloping our own black and white prints in the darkroom had yet to become obsolete. Years later, I treasure that portfolio of work. What better scenery to photograph than the vast expanse of the north shore, what better setting to begin to explore adulthood, and Whitman… and what better place to revisit, all these years later, to see if the memories remain as vibrant today. That they do.

Submitted By Michael Sceiford - Edward Jones Port Jefferson You didn’t see it on your calendar, but Tax Freedom Day fell on April 21 this year. So, why not mark the occasion by beginning to look for ways to become a “tax-smart” investor? Tax Freedom Day, calculated annually by the Tax Foundation, is the day on which Americans have earned enough money to pay this year’s federal, state and local taxes. Of course, Tax Freedom Day is something of a fiction, because most people pay their taxes throughout the year, via their paychecks. Furthermore, as famed Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr., said: “Taxes are what we pay for civilized society.” When you pay taxes, you help fund public education, the police, the fire department, food inspection, college scholarships and many other elements of society. Nonetheless, you may want to use the concept of Tax Freedom Day to find ways to reduce the taxes associated with your investments. Here are some suggestions: • Boost your 401(k) contributions. Your 401(k) contributions are typically made with pre-tax dollars, so the more you put in, the lower your taxable income. (Some employers allow a “Roth” option, under which you can make post-tax contributions.) In 2014, you can put in up to $17,500 to a 401(k) or similar plan, such as a 403(b) or 457(b), and if you are 50 or older, you can contribute an additional $5,500. • Fully fund your IRA. No matter which type of IRA you have — traditional or Roth — you will gain some valuable tax benefits. With a Roth IRA, your contributions are not deductible, but your earnings can grow tax free, provided you don’t start taking withdrawals until you are 59-1/2 and you’ve had your IRA for at least five years. If you own a traditional IRA, your earnings can grow tax-deferred, and your contributions may be deductible, depending on your income level. So, similar to a 401(k), the more you put in to your traditional IRA, the lower your taxable income may be. In 2014, you can contribute up to $5,500 to an IRA, or $6,500 if you are 50 or older. • Contribute to a college savings plan. Many college savings plans offer some type of tax advantage. For example, if you contribute to a 529 plan, your earnings can grow tax free, provided all withdrawals are only used to help pay qualified higher education expenses. (529 plan distributions

Tri-M Inductees The Earl L. Vandermeulen High School Chapter 2172 of the Tri-M Music Honor Society hosted its seventh annual honors recital and induction on April 9th. Earl L. Vandermeulen High School Principal Dr. Matthew Murphy welcomed guests and was followed by a recital of six instrumental and vocal performances by students, including pieces by César Franck, George Gershwin and John Lennon. Director of Music and Fine Arts Michael Caravello thanked parents for supporting and nurturing their children’s music education. “Musicians like the ones here know that being a true musician

requires a person to see an end result and work backwards,” he said. “It requires them to analyze, evaluate and to problem solve. They are able to take difficult musical concepts and break them down into smaller components. These skills will not only prepare them for college and global competitiveness, but will also prepare them for whatever they choose to do for the rest of their lives.” Family members looked on as continuing members were recognized and new inductees were honored for their efforts. Requirements needed to become a member of Tri-M are based on the society’s five points of distinction: scholarship, character, cooperation,

leadership and service. The induction marks an individual’s successful completion of a term of candidacy. “A Tri-M member is one who sets a good example, is always willing to assist those students who are striving to better themselves in the music department, and is always one who remembers that it is a real honor to carry these responsibilities,” said Tri-M adviser Christine Creighton. “To the graduating seniors – always remember that music is about sharing with friends and family,” said Caravello. “All of you represent what hard work, self-discipline and a lot of practice can do.”

Transitioning one’s child from high school to college or the workforce is always filled with many options and questions. This issue is even more complex for a student with special needs. Experts at Nassau BOCES Department of Special Education offered parents answers to these questions with its Transition Expo. More than 200 parents of special needs students attended the expo to meet with representatives from over 50 agencies and programs, and to attend workshops. “Nassau BOCES is the largest provider of Special Education in the county with almost 50 years of experience. We have developed agreements and relationships with many organizations over the years and our exhibitors state that they come to

this seminar because of the access to so many parents,” says Nassau BOCES Psychologist Dr. Linda Lopez. Vendors are from a variety of services including the Office of Mental Health, local colleges, counseling centers and Nassau BOCES programs. The Adult Career and Continuing Education ServicesVocational Rehabilitation (ACCES-VR) conducted a workshop explaining its vocational rehabilitation and independent living programs as well as how to help eligible individuals with disabilities to obtain employment. “I am amazed at the turnout Nassau BOCES gets and the details of the event are handled well,” exclaimed Julie Yindra, Director of Services for Students with Disabilities

at Hofstra University. She presented a workshop on college planning issues and services for students with disabilities. Parents learned about services that help students prepare for and obtain a job. One parent stated that when they attend any type of parent support event they feel that they know as much or more than the presenters, but that was not the case with this Expo. It offered a lot of new information. Parents also commented that the seminar was comprehensive. There were representatives and speakers not usually at such seminars. Many attendees asked for it to be longer so that they could participate in all workshops.

Each summer, over 4,000 children visit volunteer host families in rural, suburban, and small town communities across 13 states from Virginia to Maine and Canada. Host families simply want to share their homes with city children and the pure joys of summertime outside of the city. Families find hosting so rewarding

that more than 65 percent of all Fresh Air children are reinvited to visit the same host families year after year. First-time Fresh Air visitors are six to 12 years old and Fresh Air hosts range from young families to grandparents. Veterans Outreach Thanks to the Northport Veterans Administration, on April 14th, the John J. Lynch Vets Place shelter at Suffolk County United Veterans was the site for a Veterans Outreach program. Veterans from areas across Suffolk County, Long Island were greeted by the VA team who provided enrollment assistance, current VA Healthcare information for participants, new health programs for eligible Veterans, and a review of medical benefits and eligibility. Inside the

mobile Medical Center, the medical staff conducted free physical exams for our U.S. Veterans. “We are grateful to the Northport Veterans Administration for reaching out to our organization. The John J. Lynch Vets Place shelter provided an excellent location for this valuable service,” said Joanne Massimo, Director of Programs for Suffolk County United Veterans. at-risk Veterans and their families of Suffolk County, Long Island, NY. Edna Louise Spear Elementary School students in the second and fourth grades collaborated on a project that took a closer look at the 13 colonies. The grade levels’ combined curricula gave students the opportunity to learn about the colonies

and present their findings to their peers. “The second grade worked on putting the map together, giving it a title, a map key and labels,” said Edna Louise Spear teacher Kristen Poulos. “The fourth-grade students researched information

about the colonies, including founding date, major city and the date the colony became a state.” To complete the project, students worked together to construct a wall-sized map for display in their hallway.

P.J. Gelinas Junior High School’s Science Olympiad team once again dominated the competition at this year’s New York State Science Olympiad tournament and took home first-place honors, which qualifies them to advance to the national competition. The team, comprised of 15 students in grades seven through nine, with 15 alternates, was led by captains Ian Baram, Adam Dzurney, and Kirti Nath, and advised by coach Gary Vorwald with the assistance of Michael Bouklas, Ed Daguerre, Christine DiFede, Monica Gerber, Christopher Marotta and Hope Schroeder, as well as members of the Ward Melville High School team.

During the contest, Gelinas competed against 36 of the state’s best teams in 25 events. Medals were awarded to the top six places in each event. Gelinas was awarded medals in 19 out of 25 events, including 11 golds, four silvers and one bronze. “I am so proud of all the students in our Gelinas Science Olympiad program,” said Mr. Vorwald. “Their hard work and dedication has again been rewarded with great accomplishments. This is the 10th consecutive year that Gelinas has been first or second in New York State, and I believe this is due to the culture of learning and teamwork that we have fostered. Che performed works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Fritz Kreisler, Camille Saint-Saens and John Williams as well as a traditional Chinese song titled “Horse Race.” “The students were in awe of his ability and had many insightful questions

regarding his playing techniques,” said Port Jefferson orchestra teacher Vanessa Salzman. Che, who has been playing bass for 16 years, spoke with the students about his passion for performing and sharing his music with others.

The Earl L. Vandermeulen High School robotics team competed in the annual Long Island FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Regional Robotics Competition on April 5th to 6th at Hofstra University. More than 10,000 spectators cheered on the more than 50 teams competing for a spot in the national championship. “Our students spent six weeks, working up to six days a week, constructing a 130-pound

robot from raw materials, such as aluminum and Plexiglas pieces, combined with digital electronic components, electric motors, cameras, transmissions, wheels and a host of other robotic parts,” said group adviser Brian Chalmers. Students and mentors worked together as they built the robot. “The mentors really enjoyed having the opportunity to share their knowledge with other student team members,” he said.

The four-student robotics drive team worked together to coordinate robot functions. Tasks included shooting a twofoot-wide workout ball into a goal 11 feet in the air while simultaneously avoiding five other robots on the field. “Our robot did very well and was a strong performer on all assigned tasks,” said Chalmers. “This year, we had all new robot drivers, so it was a true learning experience for all involved.”

Suffolk County United Veterans received another visit to the John J. Lynch Vets Place shelter from the Long Island Cares Veterans Project Mobile Outreach Unit, loaded with 652 pounds of fresh produce and 181 pounds plus of personal care and paper product items. The donation was for Veterans and their family members in need which helped to provide

over 541 meals, and which supplements items available at the Food Pantry, which receives funding throughout the year from Long Island Cares to stock its shelves. “The work SCUV does in helping align veterans with everything they need ranging from housing to job development programs is inspiring, and Long Island Cares is proud to partner

with them as much as possible to support their vital work,” said Michael Haynes, Coordinator of Government Affairs and Public Policy, The Chapin Center for Public Policy, Long Island Cares. Education Partner Diane Berger, principal of the Children’s Learning Center at United Cerebral Palsy Association of Nassau County, Inc., (CLC-UCP) was honored by more 350 of Long Island’s most ardent public education supporters recently, as one of 16 honorees to receive the 2014 Nassau BOCES Education Partner Award at the Nassau BOCES Educational Foundation’s annual gala in April. The distinction is bestowed on those individuals or organizations that have made a substantial impact on public education in Nassau County. Berger represented the CLC-UCP, which was lauded as one of the most devoted institutions in support of public education on Long Island. A strategic education partner with school districts since 1967, Nassau BOCES created the awards program to recognize those who share its mission of ensuring a successful, challenging, caring and safe environment that enables students of all ages and abilities to achieve their maximum potential. These outstanding individuals and organizations have made strides to accomplishing key educational goals embraced by Nassau BOCES, such as ensuring student success. The Foundation is an independent non-profit organization that raises funds for innovative educational programs that fall outside of the agency’s budget. “The philosophy that drives our school is that each of our students deserve the best of what their peers in public school receive, and we are determined to give that to them,” said Principal Diane Berger. “We believe that CLC makes a major impact on public education by

being a partner in caring about students and directly providing the foundation they need to succeed. CLC is a special education school with an emphasis on the word ‘special.’” The Children’s Learning Center has been serving special needs children on Long Island for more than 60 years, with an annual enrollment of 250. Students with

moderate to severe disabilities from the ages 1-21 are served by a devoted faculty consisting of more than 200 educators, clinicians, support staff and administrators. Each year, approximately 45 preschool students graduate from the center and return to their home districts. Students receive special education and therapeutic services in a state-of-the-art educational setting that includes a smartboard in every classroom, music and art therapy, and numerous exracurriculars including clubs, field trips and special events. Among the activities

available to students are Boy and Girl Scouts, chorus, cheerleading, dance team, and a trio of ballet clubs that have performed at the Tilles Center. They enjoy special events such as concerts and plays, Homecoming and Prom, and embark on field trips including overnight camping trips, attendance at Broadway plays and museum sleepovers. The center’s mission is “to provide the highest quality services to the children and adults,” and a large contributing factor to the success of that mission is the CLC’s long-standing, mutually supportive relationships with Long Island school districts. CLC faculty works closely with district staff to assess student progress and plan for the future. But the partnership goes beyond educators and curriculum — the students get involved as well. The Roosevelt High School championship football team, cheerleaders and marching band take part in the center’s Homecoming Parade each year. The Carle Place and West Islip high school bands and orchestras perform regularly at CLC assemblies. And for the past 15 years, the Wheatley School has sponsored a student carnival for the center and annually invites CLC classes to join them for Wheatley’s Intercultural Unity Day.
