On Friday, April 21st, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. (or while supplies last), Supervisor Ed Romaine and the Town Board will be at Town Hall to celebrate Earth Day (April 22nd) by holding a “Free Tree, Mulch and Compost Giveaway” as part of his “Greening Brookhaven” initiative. The goal of the initiative is to distribute and plant 10,000 tree seedlings by 2020, the same goal date for the Supervisor’s Green Energy and Sustainability initiative for Town facilities. The free tree seedlings, mulch and compost will be distributed on a first come, first served basis while supplies last. Proof of residency is required. Mulch and compost is not bagged, so residents must provide their own containers and load the

Legislator Kennedy held her third annual Suffolk County Woman’s Power Breakfast today, hosted at the Holiday Inn Express in Stony Brook. Featuring elected officials, community leaders and business leaders, the breakfast was an opportunity for local women to meet and discuss challenges facing women in the private and public sector today, as well as resources that can help them overcome these challenges. While networking was the primary goal of the event, the breakfast also featured a panel of elected officials that included Islip

Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter, Brookhaven Councilwoman Valerie Cartwright, Islip Councilwoman Mary Kate Mullen, Babylon Receiver of Taxes Corinne DiSomma, Huntington Receiver of Taxes Esther Bivona, Suffolk County Clerk Judy Pascal, and Suffolk County Alliance of Chambers Chair Gina Coletti. The panel discussed their experiences as women in public service and gave advice and resources for women seeking to overcome adversity. Afterwards, Legislator Kennedy met with the other attendees, discussing their individual experiences

and potential solutions. At the conclusion of the breakfast, Legislator Kennedy thanked all who attended and wished them success in their future endeavors. “I’d like to thank each and every one of you for making this breakfast a success,” Legislator Kennedy stated, “but also for fighting the good fight every day, whether it be as a women against adversity, or in support of women fighting against adversity.” She concluded by hoping that their experiences would help inspire other women in Suffolk County.

Take 2 Simple Steps To Help Protect Your Family

(NAPSI)—Many people may not realize that it only takes two minutes for a house to be engulfed in flames. The American Red Cross and its Home Fire Campaign partners are asking everyone across the country to take the following two simple steps to help decrease the risk of home fires and save lives: 1. Create and practice your 2-minute drill. Have at least two ways to escape from every room. Select an outside meeting spot at a safe distance

where family members can meet. Discuss the plan with everyone in the household and practice it until everyone can escape in less than two minutes. Conduct practice drills at least twice a year. 2. Install and maintain smoke alarms. Working smoke alarms halve your risk of dying in a home fire. Put them on every level of your home, including inside and outside bedrooms. Test the alarms monthly and change the batteries when needed.

Never disable a smoke alarm. Teach children what an alarm sounds like and what to do if they hear one. (NAPSI)—According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 12 percent of Americans move to new homes every year. The next time you’re among them, you may be able to save time, trouble and money when you choose a professional mover—you won’t have to worry about renting equipment, paying hidden costs, handling heavy or bulky items and being responsible if something goes wrong. Here are five hints to help. 1. Be wary of any “guaranteed” estimates offered over the phone or online. Make sure you show the mover everything that needs to be moved, and get at least three estimates to compare. Avoid any that are too high or too low. 2. Check the company’s ratings with the Better Business Bureau and other consumer websites, and ask family and friends for referrals. 3. Make sure all agreements are in writing, and get a copy of everything you sign, especially the bill of lading. Never sign any blank forms. 4. Shopping with a Chance of Meatballs

I love food shopping. Not browsing for clothes. Not trying on shoes. But aimlessly wandering the aisles of the grocery store, scanning each shelf for potential ingredients in my always innovative “culinary creations”… that, I find enjoyable. This fascination with the supermarket dates back to when I was quite a bit younger, as I recall thinking what fun it would be to have a job stocking shelves with boxes and cans, bottles and bags. Perhaps it was the meticulous lining up of items that appealed to me; needless to say, I did not go on to make a career in this field after all. Growing up, I had zero interest in cooking, or even observing the process involved. Anything beyond using the toaster or microwave, perhaps

the oven on rare occasions, seemed beyond the scope of skills I wanted to learn. Boiling water? Nope. Not even a chance. I had visions of scalding liquids cascading over the top of the pot, pasta and all. And so it remained; until, that is, I moved into my own apartment and realized that perhaps cooking was one of those basic necessities that one needed to master in order to exist in the real world. {along with doing laundry, but that’s a story for another column} And so, with some helpful hints from Mom, and plenty of mixing and matching and “trying” various combinations of things, I began to slowly master this ancient art. By master, I mean I have accumulated enough variations of pasta dishes

and “fancy” salads to get by most weeks. Anything more intricate – well, that’s still a work in progress. Case in point: I have still not attempted, nor do I have any desire to, any entrees involving meats. No raw chopped meat or chicken cutlets or pork chops to tangle with for this girl. I’ve often said I could probably get by being a vegetarian, and one look in the meat department seems to confirm this notion every time. Not that I don’t want to learn how to make a nice traditional Italian sauce with meatballs. I often ask my mom to show me how, with one caveat – can I wear rubber gloves while rolling them? And that, dear readers, is why sauce has yet to be added to my repertoire.

Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory recently served as the keynote speaker for the St. Joseph’s College Military Graduate Recognition Ceremony at St. Joseph’s Long Island Campus. “On behalf of the residents of Suffolk County, it was my privilege to take part in celebrating the academic accomplishments of these young men and women who protect our country,” said Presiding Officer Gregory. “Among the many ideals my military service instilled in me was the significance of leadership and integrity. The world needs more leaders for whom integrity is of the utmost importance – and who better to look to than our military graduates?” The event celebrated the graduation of 50

military-affiliated students from St. Joseph’s Long Island campus. Graduates representing each of the five armed service branches (Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, and Navy) were in attendance, including active members, veterans, reserves, spouses and dependents. “St. Joseph’s College NY was honored to have Presiding Officer Gregory address our 2017 militaryaffiliated graduates,” said Erin D’Eletto, Director of the Office of Military & Veteran Services at St. Joseph’s College. “This year the College proudly commends the academic achievements of fifty military and veteran students. Started as a tribute to Comsewogue student Jason Mariano, who succumbed to leukemia in 1987, A Night for Jason raises funds to support Friends of Karen, a charity that helps families of children diagnosed with cancer. The organization, with a local office, in Port Jefferson, helped almost 1,500 children with services through their Family Support Program last year. Friends of Karen began in 1978 when family friends came to the aid of a couple and their 16-year old daughter, Karen, who was terminally ill with Lafora’s Disease. Student-Emcees: Francesca Bruno, Mike Famiano, Jess Hurley, Angela Rochford, and Caroline Rivera opened the show with a hilarious video presentation that

put the audience at ease, and prepared them for an evening of laughter, and joy. District Superintendent, Dr. Joseph Rella, made a cameo appearance in the video! Singers, dancers, and comedy skits along with featured performances by the Comsewogue’s Montage and Tapestry choral students made the evening thoroughly enjoyable for the supportive audience. Ms. Urbinati thanked the performers, stage crew, sponsors, teachers, administrators and support staff for making A Night for Jason30 such a success. Proceeds from this year’s ‘spectacular’ will benefit hundreds of children, and their families. Thanks again to everyone involved in this year’s show, as the community begins to plan for #31!

District Honored The Port Jefferson School District is pleased to announce that for the 11th consecutive year it has been ranked among the NAMM Foundation’s “Best Communities for Music Education” in America, an honor that acknowledges schools and districts across the U.S. for their commitment to and support for music education as part of the core curriculum. The 2017 award specifically recognizes the collaborate efforts between

teachers, administrators, students, parents and the community, who work in tandem to keep comprehensive music education an integral part of the core curriculum in Port Jefferson. “The Port Jefferson School District is once again honored to be selected as one of the best communities for music education,” said Michael Caravello, director of music and fine arts. “It is a testament to the dedication of our students and music

teachers and support of our community.” The Port Jefferson School District boasts multiple vocal, band and orchestral performing groups for students and each group is provided with the opportunity to perform within the community. Additionally, through partnerships and relationships with Stony Brook University and the Staller Center many groups regularly have the chance to learn from renowned professional musicians.

On April 8th, Councilman Michael Loguercio visited with a group of Longwood Junior High School students getting a head start on the Great Brookhaven Cleanup. The group consisted of students from Longwood Jr. High School who were cleaning up Longwood Road in Ridge. Councilman Loguercio said, “Thank you to the students and their advisors for taking time out on a beautiful Saturday to help clean up our community.” Registration is now open for the 10th Annual Great Brookhaven Clean Up. The event, which is cosponsored by the Town of Brookhaven’s Department of Waste Management

and Keep America Beautiful, Inc., will be held on Saturday, May 20th at various locations throughout Brookhaven Town. It is part of a national effort that draws over 5 million volunteers in more than 20,000 communities across America who come together to pick up litter and clean miles of roadways, rivers, lakes, and more. Last year, the Great Brookhaven Clean Up drew over 3,300 residents. Free gloves, trash bags and t-shirts will be provided by the Town for the Great Brookhaven Clean Up volunteers. The supplies will be available for pick up at the Department of Waste Management’s third floor office at Town Hall

during regular business hours (9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) from May 8th to May 19th. Evening pick-ups are scheduled for May 16th and May 17th from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Brookhaven Town Hall is located at 1 Independence Hill in Farmingville. If your home is among them, you may care to heed these seven hints to keep your pet healthy from the experts at the American Veterinary Medical Association: 1. Maintain your pet at a

healthy weight; 2. Exercise your pet; 3. Feed a balanced, nutritious diet; 4. Visit the veterinarian at least once a year to make sure your pet is healthy and to help detect problems earlier; 5.
