Vandermeulen High School on March 28th to give performances of No More Victims, a professionally-produced musical that follows the lives of four high school students in various social roles within their school. The story gives insight into the students’ public personas and private struggles through singing, dancing, acting and video segments. A great job was done by all.

Outdoor play is a highlight of childhood. Being able to run, jump and swing outside is an excellent form of exercise and a way for kids to interact with their friends. One staple of youthful play is spending time on a play set in the backyard. Parents without a play set in the backyard need only look into a neighboring yard with a play set to witness these prime congregation spots for the neighborhood children. And play sets don’t just benefit kids. Parents who want to keep tabs on their children can do so much more easily with a backyard play set, and knowing they are having fun close by alleviates worries. The decision to purchase a play set is one pondered by parents all across the country. There are scores of ready-made varieties available or sets that can be custom designed. The choice of which one to buy should be based on a number of factors, both in desired features and also

models that offer safety. Materials The first decision parents face is which material to use for the play set. The main materials used to build play sets are plastic, metal and wood. Plastic sets tend to be very basic and may be reserved for young children’s sets. While they can go outside, they may not last more than a few years and are often best relegated to indoor toys. Metal sets are some of the most durable and strong. They are frequently seen at parks and playgrounds. Metal play sets are often cemented down to a foundation for stability, which doesn’t make them ideal for a temporary set that will be removed when the kids outgrow it. Also, you cannot generally add onto a metal set. Wooden sets are usually a compromise between the two. They’re good for backyards because they can be taken down when they’re no longer used. immediately put them in a vase of water. The key is not to let the tip of the stem dry out or close up with an air bubble, sap or other substances, preventing the uptake of water. Be sure to use lukewarm water so as not to shock the blooms. • Remove leaves. Take off the leaves of the plant that would end up underwater in the vase. Exposure to the water could cause the leaves to rot and fall off, creating algae or sludge in the vase water. It also may breed extra bacteria or attract small insects to the water. However, do not to remove the thorns from roses, as this tends to shorten their shelf life. • Choose young flowers. Mature flowers may have peaked and begun to make room for a new round of blooms, so try to choose young buds or blooms that just opened so that you’ll have an opportunity to enjoy them longer. • Create a viable water atmosphere. Once a fresh flower is cut and a stem is placed in water, bacteria and fungi can start to grow almost immediately. These microscopic organisms can clog the small tubes inside the stem that suck up water for nourishment. Many florists send home a packet of water additive to alleviate some problems in the indoor environment.

The packet will contain a biocide that kills bacteria and fungi. There will be an acidifier as well as sugar. The acidifier makes the water more acidic to allow better absorption of water up the stem. The sugar is a food source for the flowers. Homeowners who cut flowers from their gardens can purchase these additives or create their own variations from items around the house. It has been said a penny in the water will kill the microorganisms because copper is a fungicide. An aspirin can make the water more acidic. You can also try small amounts of bleach, lemon-lime soda or even antiseptic mouthwash. • Keep flowers away from ... Don’t place cut flowers next to fruit, which gives off gases as it ripens, causing flowers to age faster. Also, keep the flowers away from direct sunlight and try to keep them in a cool place. • Change the water. Keep on top of water maintenance by changing it at least every 2 to 3 days to maintain good water health. Be sure to replace the additives each time you change the water. By following a few strategies you can keep fresh-cut flowers lasting longer for enjoyment.

Ecoscaping is a growing trend among homeowners who want to take care of their lawns and landscapes but want to do so in a way that’s environmentally friendly. Integrating both landscape architecture and spatial planning with environmental science, ecoscaping is meant to help homeowners create a sustainable and ecofriendly landscape design. It’s natural to assume that ecoscaping includes looking for ways to reduce reliance on chemical pesticides, but there are many additional ways homeowners can embrace ecoscaping. This includes

removing or refusing to plant invasive plants that are difficult to control because they are from different ecosystems and can threaten local wildlife and existing plants. Instead of choosing exotic plants that aren’t native to the area, choose native plants that are accustomed to the local climate. Another way to embrace ecoscaping is to develop a planting strategy wherein plants are planted in beneficial growing conditions that can eliminate theneed for chemical fertilizers and excessive watering.

Brisk winds and salt spray can enhance the experience of living by the seaside. But the same features of coastal living that attract residents can be unkind to many garden plants. Sun, salt, a light breeze and some sand may make for a picturesque day at the beach, but they can be anything but favorable to the delicate plants and flowers in a garden. Further, the very warm temperatures and arid, sandy soil that are typical of seaside locales can make planting a lush garden difficult. Despite the difficulties, coastal living and gardening is possible if you implement some tips for creating a more welcoming environment for plants. Here’s how to do just that. • Set up a windbreak. Whether it’s by using native grasses and durable plants that are typically found in coastal areas or an architectural structure, such as a stone wall or

fencing, a good windblock will help shelter other plants from blowing sand and salt. Just be sure to plan the windblock to stop most of the oncoming wind in a way that your water views are not compromised. • Amend the soil. Few things grow well in sandy soil on their own. Unless you’re thinking of solely planting cacti and other succulent plants that don’t require much water from the soil, it will be necessary to amend the soil to include nutrients and a more hospitable growing base. Sand is good for drainage, but it cannot retain enough moisture to be viable for most plants. Therefore a healthy mix of nutrient-rich soil, compost and fertilizer can provide the right start. • Consider sun and heat exposure. Select plants that are hardy in warm-weather, full-sun conditions. Droughttolerant plants are a good idea. Choose among varieties that have waxy

leaves to repel salt and sand and low-growing types that will have more protection from the sun. Should you want to plant other flowers and plants, you may have to consider creating shade with moderately-sized bushes or trees. Yucca plants thrive seaside, as does ornamental pampas grass. Brightly colored ice plants and cosmos flowers can add splashes of color. • Add costal accessories. Typically seaside gardens are enhanced with knicknacks and other items that are specific to coastal living. Pilings with rope, small anchors, sea shells, nautical accents, and much more can be used to fill in bare areas of the garden and create places for birds and other animals to explore. While there can be some challenges to seaside gardening, it is possible to plant a seaside garden if gardeners choose wisely among heat-, sand- and drought-tolerant plants.

Benefits Of Riding Mowers Homeowners love extensive, lush, green lawns. But the elbow grease that goes into tending to the landscape is far less beloved. One task that routinely causes bouts of procrastination is mowing the lawn. But riding mowers can change the way homeowners view mowing the lawn. Traditionally, mowing the lawn has been a task largely handled by homeowners pushing walk-behind mowers. Whether these mowers were powered by gasoline, electricity or simply human power, they were the type of mower that was generally the most popular and most affordable. Individuals had different features they could consider in their mowers, including horsepower and the size of the deck. There

were also mowers that could bag or mulch. Despite these features, homeowners with a particularly large back or front yard -- or both -- may have found lawn mowing to be tedious work. Those who have yards of almost an acre or more often find riding mowers to be an efficient method of mowing the lawn, and one that also does not require as much effort out in the sun. A riding mower’s cutting deck is in front, while a lawn or gardening tractor’s cutting deck is mid-mounted, which is how they differ. Lawn tractors also may be able to accept other landscaping attachments. A riding mower is more maneuverable than a tractor, particularly for landscapes that may have trees or planting beds. There are thousands of species of ants all over the world. Ants live in many different climates but are notably active and most abundant in warm temperatures. Chances are, at some point during the spring and summer, you will come in contact with ants in your area. Although many ants are black and red, there are a few species of ants that are light brown and even yellowish in color. Pharaoh ants and thief ants are light-colored ants that are often mistaken for each other. Thief ants build colonies in large numbers close to other ant colonies and then use tunneling to “steal” food. Pharaoh ants are also very small and tend to make well-hidden nests, which allow them to infest a property or home quite quickly. Because both of these types of ants can become pests, you may need to hire a professional exterminator if the ants become a nuisance.

When people think of outdoor storage, they generally envision garden sheds to house their lawn and garden equipment and tools. However, if space doesn’t allow for a large shed, there is no need to fret because there are other storage possibilities. Consider a garden ottoman or bench, for example. This structure can be built from wood and then painted or covered in padded fabric. Store small items inside the ottoman, which can also serve as a table or additional seating. In addition to an ottoman, a garden tool that can keep shovels and rakes organized. Homeowners with a deck can construct lidded deck boxes to store patio cushions or any other outdoor equipment. Utilizing the space under the deck is another idea. Cover the perimeter of the bottom of the deck with lattice and install one piece on a hinge to serve as a door. Store equipment underneath and out of sight. It also will be protected from the elements.

Luge Slider Search How do members of the U.S. National Luge Team get their start in the Fastest Sport On Ice? through the USA Luge Slider Search, which targets boys and girls ages 9 to 13. Young athletes who want to experience the thrill of luge and train under the guidance of USA Luge national team coaches and athletes can do so when the Slider Search rolls into select cities this spring. “The Slider Search is a key program for our organization,” said Fred Zimny, recruitment manager for USA Luge and U.S. Olympic Committee Coach of the Year in 2000.

“We look forward to giving enthusiastic youngsters the chance to have fun, experience the sport and perhaps qualify for our Junior Development Team.” Slider Search clinics will take each day from 9-11 a.m, 12-2 p.m. and 3-5 p.m. Participants can register for the clinic of their choice and all clinics are free. All Access Pass All Access Productions came to Port Jefferson Middle School and Earl L. Vandermeulen High School on March 28th to give performances of No More Victims, a professionally produced musical that follows the lives of four high school students in various social roles within their school. The story gives insight into the students’ public personas and private struggles through singing,

dancing, acting and video segments. “Think about the choices you make,” said Port Jefferson Middle School Principal Antonio Santana. “Be conscious of what you say to yourself and to others.” No More Victims confronts the ongoing issue of bullying and violence in America’s schools and local communities. The production targeted bullying, cyberbullying,

teen violence, teen suicide, image, selfworth, popularity, high expectations by adults and peers, and difficult relationships, among other issues. After the performance, students were able to participate in a questionand-answer session and have lunch with some of the All Access cast members. The event was sponsored by the Port Jefferson PTSA.

Best Community The Port Jefferson School District has been ranked among the NAMM Foundation’s Best Communities for Music Education in America for the eighth consecutive year. The national program has put the spotlight on 376 selected school districts with outstanding commitment to music education. The Best Communities designation recognizes collaborative, from-theground-up efforts of teachers, administrators, students and parents who continually work to keep comprehensive

music education as an integral part of the core curriculum. nice bonus. Several years later, I still work there. In fact, now my brother works there too. As I am heading off to college, I’m not interested in working many hours. I would much rather spend time with family than pick up a shift. There will be plenty of time to work, but only a few months to spend living at home. Sometimes, work is overwhelming; it is rarely fun. Nonetheless, it is a responsibility that I have undertaken. Working teaches invaluable life lessons that will prepare me for what is to come. In addition, my job has

afforded me the ability to socialize in a new environment. I have made new friends, and the bond between my brother and I has been strengthened. Without a doubt, working has been the most beneficial aspect of my young life. I have never felt more accepted within a group in my entire life. Even though some of my coworkers are old enough to be my parents, we act like a normal bunch of high school friends. As we close out this school year, I am looking forward to a memorable summer. Turning Points By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Discovering The Passion To Do What You Love… That was the topic I chose to speak on at the recent C.W. Post Honors Program Conference. The good news? Every last student in attendance at the standing room only panel had something they were passionate about and, in an ideal world, wished to pursue as a career. The bad news? Most they seemed all too content to relegate these passions to a mere hobby, rather than even giving the dreams a fleeting chance to exist in their own, real world. Musicians majoring in Chemistry, Artists majoring in Finance… This is not to say that all fields don’t hold some sort of fulfilling promise – but

just choosing a major for the sake of picking something, anything… well, I can’t say I support that philosophy wholeheartedly. And as for the money factor; well that only goes so far in dictating happiness. Say what you will about being able to purchase all the comforts and extravagances you like, but if you spend the majority of your life just going through the motions of a 9-5 job, I think it’s safe to assume no amount of compensation will make up for it. I’m not sure I made much of an impression on these students, as many are already well on their way to graduation and seem fairly set to continue on their chosen path. Others were a bit more open-minded, willing to put themselves out there and

explore – at least in the short term – for even the slightest chance at success in something they truly enjoyed. And still others remained undecided, juggling several interests while in the process of making that all-important decision of which direction to head in. I suppose the most important point I tried to make, and the one I attempt to follow myself, is that, no matter what decisions you make along the way, there is always room to change course, start fresh, adapt on the go… nothing is set in stone unless you allow it to be. As we grow and mature, so do our dreams, and what once may have seemed impossible could very well become a genuine possibility down the road.

As the school year comes to a close, many of Long Island’s high school students are looking forward to a funfilled summer. For some, however, now begins the monotonous task of finding a summer job. Even though the school year is over, teens often find themselves hunting for employment for several reasons. For some, extra income is a driving factor. Fur Ball Funds Raised On April 3rd, over 200 guests attended Save-APet Animal Rescue and Adoption Center, Inc.’s 13th Annual Evening For The Love Of Animals Fur Ball Event at Flowerfield Celebrations Catering in St. James to raise money for the shelter’s programs and homeless companion animals. By the end of the event, approximately $30,000 was raised for Save-A-Pet. The Fur Ball event is a formal night that was organized to bring people together who share a

common bond: an undying love for animals. The money raised is used to continue Save-A-Pet’s commitment to programs such as saving lives of homeless animals, pet adoption, spaying and neutering, feral cat TNR (trap, neuter and return), humane education, and public awareness. At the event, guests enjoyed an open bar, hors d’oeuvres, dinner, dessert, and live music by Wiggum and harpist Ryan Taliercio. Attendees had the opportunity to participate in a silent auction and

Learning On The Job An Eastern Long Island Academy of Applied Technology student is interning at the Animal Health & Wellness Veterinary Office in East Setauket. Three Village CSD’s Kelly Robrecht plans to be a veterinarian. Eastern Suffolk BOCES’ Work Experience Coordinator Rosaria Broesler reports that students interning throughout the career and technical education programs are provided an opportunity to practice

and observe advanced procedures that most do not get until they reach college level studies. Animal Health & Wellness has been offering internships for more than five years and is a member of the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Business and Industry Partners. “The best thing about my internship is seeing all the different patients and learning about the illnesses. I’m learning about both conventional and holistic procedures

and practices for animal wellness,” said Kelly, who attends Bixhorn Technical Center. She added, “There’s something new to learn every day!” Kelly will continue her internship for the remainder of the school year. Her future plans after graduation includes attending Suffolk County Community College to become a veterinary technician, followed by an application to attend Cornell University to become a veterinarian.

Community Connection Councilwoman Valerie M. Cartright has launched her Community Connection Campaign. The Campaign is a multifaceted approach to provide residents with accessible, convenient access to the Town services and to the office of Council District 1 (CD1). A primary goal of the Campaign is to ensure that constituents of CD1 are notified of proceedings and events that are relevant to their specific Council District. The campaign has multiple components including the “Mobile Offices.” The Councilwoman will hold a series of “Mobile Offices” in each area of her Council District. Residents can go to the Mobile Office, which will be located within their community, rather than traveling to Town Hall in Farmingville. Constituents will have the opportunity to speak with the Councilwoman and staff regarding any

questions, comments or concerns. The first three Mobile Offices will be held in April, May and June in Setauket, Port Jefferson Station/ Terryville, and Stony Brook, respectively. The Whole Story On April 2nd and 3rd, Earl L. Vandermeulen High School students in Dinarae Camarda’s Wellness and Fitness For All classes traveled to Whole Foods in Lake Grove. Approximately 80 students, who traveled in four separate half-day trips, were each given their own tour guided by a Whole Foods nutritional expert.

“We visited the produce section and learned about organically grown fruits and vegetables and the certifying agencies that deem crops organic,” said Camarda. “Students also learned about the federal regulations surrounding conventionally grown versus organically grown crops.” Other topics of discussion

included wild caught and farm-raised fish, GMOs, humanely raised animals, superfoods that are nutrient dense, beverages such as kombucha, and more. Students were given samples in every department and allowed to shop for a healthy snack to eat in the cafe.

At the annual Biophysical Society meeting in February, Ken A. Dill, Director of the Laufer Center for Physical and Quantitative Biology and Professor of Physics and Chemistry at Stony Brook University was interviewed by Biophysics Society TV during which he used the example of the iPhone to explain how basic science research pays off for the public and for the economy. “Industrial technology development was very important in going from the iPhone 1 to the iPhone 5, but without basic science discoveries, i.e., the basic computer,

solid state electronics, GPS, wireless technology and the internet – all of which were funded with public money – the iPhone would not have been invented at all,” said Dill. “It took 60 years from the basic science to the payoff for smartphones which is now a $150 billion industry. So thanks to federal funding support of basic science, our parents and grandparents made it possible for us to have the iPhone today.” Putting this into the context of diminishing support for basic science research by the Federal Government, Dill continued: “During the 1960s the federal government invested 1.7 percent of the country’s GDP into research and development versus 0.7 percent today.
