Showing Off Science Smarts

ver 200 Edna Louise Spear Elementary School students showed off their science smarts at their school’s 4th Annual Science Fair, held on March 25th. The science fair spotlighted numerous science projects, including topics like paper planes, pop rocks and caffeine. It also featured a new Kids’ Choice Awards where students voted on their favorite projects in each grade. Six students were also selected to compete at the Brookhaven National Lab science fair.

Walk For Victory The Marfan Foundation hosts its second annual Walk for Victory on Long Island on Saturday, May 2nd, at 12 p.m. at the Syosset-Woodbury Community Park in Woodbury. This mile-long walk is part of a nationwide program to help raise awareness and raise funds to create a brighter future for the many thousands of individuals and families

During a full-day workshop on April 1 at Bay Shore High School, 11 Earl L. Vandermeulen High School students learned to inspire their peers using compassion. Throughout the sixth annual Suffolk County High School Principals Association seminar, “Compassion Without

Boarders,” the Port Jefferson students were introduced to several speakers and made many new friends. The students were invited to participate in the event that brought together 30 high schools from across Long Island for being leaders within their own schools.

Participating Port Jefferson students included Lexi Alfeo, Abigail Bossert, Tatum Hurney, Emma Martin, Sterling Nenninger, Liane Russel, Corinne Scannell, Emma Schoepflin, Billy Witrock, JiWon Woo, and Emily Zygula.

Music Around The World The sounds of drums, xylophones and shakers filled the gymnasium during the Edna Louise Spear Elementary School’s annual Music Around the World performance on

April 2nd. During the event, fourthgraders performed songs, dance and instrumental pieces native to Spain, Morocco, Liberia and the Iroquois Nation for parents

Confused?

By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As a former student of psychology, I am continuously fascinated by those factors which cause a person’s mood to drastically change from one moment to the next, often with no discernable explanation. One minute, happy, positive energy; the next, sullen, negative bitterness. It’s enough to make your head spin. Of course, there are a million factors that could possibly contribute to such sudden alterations in behavior; but, if you’re like me, you immediately look for the root of the problem. Is it my fault? Did I do something, say something, unknowingly

cause some perceived slight…what? Chances are, it’s something else entirely. (Read: Everything is not always about you!) The thing is, when you’re in a foul frame of mind, it’s difficult to see beyond the black cloud. Best everyone stay out of your way until the storm has passed, as you can’t be held accountable for your tone, whether impatient, annoyed, indifferent… in short, anything but friendly. Negativity breeds more negativity, and those who dare to cross paths with those in such a state are just asking for trouble. And so the cycle continues. Day after day of trying to dodge the slings and arrows of those who

would bring you down to their level, if you let them. It’s an effort, to be sure, to block out and continue on your merry way. But what other choice do we have? There comes a point when you need to avoid being sucked into the cycle. I often envy those who seem to exude nothing but positive vibes, who appear to be in a constant state of contentment. Is it genuine? How do they achieve such a mentality and, better yet, maintain it continuously? I suppose, even if it is merely a means of keeping up appearances, such a skill should be applauded. Fake it ‘til you make it, as they say. Perhaps they should hold a class on that.

On Saturday, April 25th, the women of the Strong Island Derby Revolution (SIDR) hit the track in their second home game of this season as they take on the Jerzey Derby Brigade (JDB) from Morristown, NJ. Last season, these two teams battled it out with SIDR taking the win both home and away. “This is by far one of the most physical teams we’ve played to date so it’s always an exciting time for fans,” said Doc Block, coach of the Strong Island Revolution. This exciting bout will take place at Strong Island’s home rink World Gym Racquet & Sports Arena, located at 384 Mark Tree Road in East Setauket. The participating Port Jefferson students took home medals in all four levels of the competition. To earn the awards, the 40 students competed against 14 other schools in Nassau and Suffolk counties showing off their knowledge of Latin grammar, vocabulary,

translation, word derivations, Roman life, history, mythology and literature. Science Olympiad The Earl L. Vandermeulen High School Science Olympiad team showed that they have what it takes to win. During the New York State Science Olympiad Competition, held at Le Moyne College in Syracuse on March 13th and 14th, the team took home four medals and placed 16th out of 50 teams.

Murphy Junior High School eighth grader Leah Cussen and Ward Melville High School junior Wendy Wahlert – have become published authors and illustrators as a result of their winning entries in the first Helen Stein Shack Picture Book Contest organized by Emma S. Clark Memorial Library.

Ward Melville Key Club swept New York State for the most awards at the annual Key Club Leadership Training Conference in Albany this March. Competing against 87 clubs in attendance, and over 230 clubs in the entire state, the team won second place in the Platinum Division of the Single Service Awards for Walk for Beauty, the Advocacy Award for Youth Awareness of Mental Illness, second place for Public Relations, Outstanding Governor’s project for our Water Walk to support

The words and story of Rohan Murphy captivated R.C. Murphy Junior High School students and staff as the inspirational speaker visited the building in early April and encouraged all to live a life with “no excuses.” Murphy, who had lost his legs at birth, shared his story of overcoming life’s obstacles and physical challenges in order to

Bullying Danger As part of Miller Place School District’s ongoing commitment to educate students and parents about the dangers of bullying, North Country Road Middle School and Miller Place High School recently invited John Halligan to speak about student confrontation and youth depression. “Ryan’s Story” encompassed Halligan’s recount of his son’s suicide and included a question and answer session with students. “One of our jobs as educators is to inform students about the dangers

of bullying and to teach them how to handle dangerous situations when they present themselves.” said Superintendent of the Miller Place School District Dr. Marianne Higuera. “Ryan’s Story’ demonstrated a powerful and emotional message that our students will take with them and use to make positive change.” Students learned how online and in-person bullying from Ryan’s peers played a significant role in his suicide. Mr. Halligan presented tips to students about the online world and

how certain situations can be avoided. Students were encouraged to speak up against bullying and not be a bystander. Mr. Halligan also addressed parents about bullying and how technology has become a major factor. He defined the terms bullying and cyber bullying, shared some issues with social media and named some common teen issues. Parents received bullying statistics and recommendations for handling the situation should their child fall victim to bullying.

As The Jazz Loft in Stony Brook prepares for its opening this summer, donations of historic documents, photos, instruments and more continue to pour in from the archives of legendary figures in the jazz world. Famed saxophonist Wally Kane is donating archives on loan from his illustrious career, including 40 years with Sesame Street, 12 years with Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show Band, all performances and recordings with the SauterFinnegan Orchestra since its inception in the 1950s and the NY Philharmonic. Kane, now 82, was part of the original house band organized by Joe

Raposo for Sesame Street. His credits also include backing Roberta Flack on recordings and the original soundtrack to The Wiz. Musician Tom Manuel, President and Curator of The Jazz Loft, already has a personal collection of over 9,000 items planned for the space. Many of the new items are from family members of jazz greats generously offering these treasured possessions for the public to enjoy. They include a gold-plated trumpet belonging to Ernie Royal who worked with the likes of Lionel Hampton and Count Basie, never released photos from his studio recording sessions and an original

Transit Safety The Suffolk Region PTA, in collaboration with the New York School Bus Contractors Association and the Suffolk County Chapter of the New York Association for Pupil Transportation, recently held a special session on child school bus safety. Four local school bus companies participated, hosted by Suffolk Transportation Service

in Bay Shore. Nearly 100 people from all over Suffolk County attended the event, designed to help parents better understand the safety features on modern school buses and the training requirements of drivers. Information provided includes the Top Ten Questions You Should Be Asking Your Bus Company. Demonstrations included

proper emergency evacuations, student management of crossings to and from the bus stop using the mirror system, child check safety using internal and external cameras, motion detectors, the significance of stop arms, and the necessity of children avoiding the danger zone of 10 feet in front of the bus.

To add some breathing room to a compact space, all you need are some colorful ideas. “Color is one of the easiest, most affordable ways to transform the look and feel of a room,” says David Bromstad, HGTV® star and celebrity interior designer. “When used in a few well-chosen places, such as a feature wall or statement piece of furniture, color can have a big impact in a small space.” Bromstad offers these color tips for transforming a space from tiny to airy: Create a focal point with paint. Paint a statement wall that draws attention away from the size of your space and toward something beautiful and vibrant.
