Local community member Casey Vail volunteered with the Global Surgical and Medical Support Group in Lviv, Ukraine. The Global Surgical and Medical Support Group is a non-profit group that was formed in 2015 and is composed of former U.S. armed forces medics and doctors. They have been training medical personnel in Ukraine to perform combat medicine. Casey, a ten year veteran as a U.S. Army Special

Forces Medic, returned home just recently from his volunteer stint. Hope for Youth www.hfyny.org Hope For Youth’s dedicated team of staff, volunteers and interns facilitates positive change in the lives of Long Island children, youth and families. The non-proﬁt runs what they call a Kinship Caregiver Program, which helps create a better Long Island by offering a child a pathway to a better future. Sadly, children may be removed from their homes for many reasons. Nationally, the four key reasons are neglect, parental drug use, a caretaker’s inability to cope and physical abuse.

They also receive family services, case management support and other supportive services.

Keith Lewis was not like your average six year old. At that age, he began collecting corn silk from the family garden and bits of broken glass. He imagined them to be like gold and diamonds. Growing up in Europe and Asia, he continued to be enthralled by jewelry. So much so that at 12 years old, he learned to cut gems in South Korea at a lapidary shop and to cast and construct jewelry shortly afterwards. He studied art at several universities and graduated with a Masters of Fine Arts in Goldsmithing from SUNY New Paltz in New York. Shortly after graduation, he participated in his first craft show and hasn’t stopped. In fact, Keith has had the opportunity to show his work in nearly every major craft exhibition in the United States. His Mica Pod earrings were chosen to be the logo for the 2010 Smithsonian Craft2Wear exhibition. Keith has been making jewelry for more than 30 years. His pieces are available in hundreds of galleries across the country, as well as in France and Italy. He is also represented in the book 500 Gemstone Jewels (Lark, 2010), Best of Worldwide Jewelry Artists Vol. 1 (Kennedy 2011) and in the collection of the Cooper Hewitt Museum. He does craft shows and sells on line through his website (www.keithlewisstudio. com) According to Keith, his process for creating jewelry entails incorporating, “the materials, textures and surprises found in nature. I am currently using amber Mica which I layer with 23K gold-leaf, carving volcanic stone and Anthracite, which I inset with natural pearls and precious stones. “In addition, I create my copper finishes using a Japanese technique called Hiirodo where I heat the

finished copper shape until brightly glowing, then plunge it into boiling water to achieve a plum red appearance. In what I call the ‘Raku’ version of this patina, variations in the surface coloration are created by pressing the white-hot copper onto wood, causing ﬂames and smoke which change what would have been an even, plum red finish into more organic tan and dark brown colors. The diverse materials I work with require a combination of goldsmithing techniques to turn them into a piece of finished jewelry.” Keith is constantly experimenting with materials. In fact, he saw a

company manufacturing a urethane board specifically for sign making (outdoor signs that look like they are made of wood, but don’t weather). The board was made with about 240 water bottles. He found that they were extremely light – good for earrings. Moreover, it was perfect for his lacquer and acrylic paints. He uses a tiny 3” table saw to cut the board and then shape the pieces with fiber wheels. Consequently, Keith now has a line of earrings made from recycled water bottles. As part of his team, his daughter started painting the earrings. “At the Reboli Center, we not only admire Keith’s beautiful designs and unique materials, but also that for more than 20 years he has been donating a portion of the sales for his ‘heart’ earrings to the Family of Woodstock. This organization provides shelter and services for victims of domestic violence. At shows, buyers of ‘heart’ earrings are given a SASE to send the full cost of the earrings directly to the shelter. He truly is a gem,” said Lois Reboli, founder and president of The Reboli Center. The Reboli Center is located at 64 Main Street in Stony Brook, and is open Tuesday – Saturday from 11am to 5pm, and on Sunday 1pm to 5pm. A Letter From Project9Line Dear supporters, The Department of Veterans Affairs is proposing changes to the VA Schedule for Rating Disabilities specifically pertaining to the respiratory & auditory body systems as well as mental disorders. The “savings” from these proposed changes are projected at 100 Billion dollars over the next 10 years. That equals $100,000 directly from 1 Million Veterans pockets. The main conditions affected are Sleep Apnea, Tinnitus, and PTSD. We only have 1 week left to stop them. Please alert your network around the country to tell their local congressman that we do not want these changes made. Also, please tell your media contacts the same. Together we can stop them but we must Act now. The VA claims that they will not reduce any current Ratings but it is the VA’s regular practice to periodically reassess disabled veterans who have not sought an increase. If a reassessment occurs, it may be done under the new guidelines and the risk of reduction is most definitely present. This new rating schedule may effect every veteran past, present, and future. The reason for the proposed sleep apnea changes is because many veterans who were exposed to burn pits and/or agent orange (both are dioxin) have developed the condition sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is extremely debilitating and can be fatal. Currently, if a veteran is diagnosed with sleep apnea and is prescribed a CPAP (Continuous positive airway pressure) machine they are entitled to 50% service connection. Sleep apnea symptoms include; excessive daytime sleepiness (hypersomnia), depression, anxiety, headaches, sexual disfunction, hight blood pressure, increased accidents, cardiac issues, loud snoring, gasping for air during sleep, morning headache, difficulty staying asleep (insomnia), of inability to concentrate, irritability, snoring, restlessness while sleeping, waking up suddenly after gasping or choking, trouble concentrating, forgetfulness, or crankiness, constant need to go pee at night, night sweats as well as it can lead to a stroke. The VA is proposing to eliminate

the 50% threshold verbiage that currently states “the veteran requires the use of a breathing assistance device, such as a CPAP machine” which entitles the veteran to 50% service connection. By removing this verbiage they will effectively eliminate any future applicants from getting the 50% rating for sleep apnea. The VA states “the basis for assignment of evaluation at all of these proposed levels will be the functional impairment caused by sleep apnea, not simply the method of treatment.” Also, the VA claims the “purpose of these changes is to update medical terminology, incorporate medical advances that have occurred since the last review, and provide well- defined criteria in accordance with actual clinical practice.” This is not so, It’s all about the money as shown through the VA projected savings in the VA economic impact study released on January 27, 2022. From said VA economic impact study - “VALUE: VA has determined that there are costs and transfer savings associated with this rulemaking. The total transfers savings is $15 billion from FY 2022-2026 and $57.1 billion over a 10-year period from FY 2022-2031.” Most of that savings (40 Billion) is from the proposed sleep apnea ratings changes and Tinnitus removal (15 Billion). The reason for the tinnitus changes is because almost everyone that has served has developed tinnitus. Tinnitus is the most commonly service connected condition. Over 90% of Veteran applicants are granted service connection for tinnitus (over 2 million veterans are service connected for tinnitus) and are paid about $150 per month at the current rate. The VA is proposing to eliminate the 10% rating for tinnitus and combine the symptoms of tinnitus with hearing loss and rate it under hearing loss. The issue is that the threshold for service connection for hearing loss is much more difficulty to achieve. The result of this change will make it extremely difficult for veterans to be compensated for tinnitus and the constant ringing in the ears. Also, in a separate simultaneous proposal, the VA is proposing to change the Rating Schedule for

mental health conditions. After review it seems that these changes may be beneficial to veterans but we should all be wary of assuming any benefit from these changes just yet. The definition and interpretation of the new verbiage has yet to be played out. With an estimated savings of 45 Billion over the next 10 years, it appears that the veterans with mental health conditions could be paying the price. Estimated savings based on the VA economic impact study of the proposed changes to the mental health verbiage within the ratings schedule. “Estimated impact: VA has

determined that there are costs and transfers associated with this rule making. The total budgetary impact is $18.3 billion from FT 2022-2026 and $45 billion over a 10-year period from FY 2022-2031.” We can not let them make these changes. Please take the time to alert your fellow Americans, fellow veterans, elected officials, and media connections that we do not want these changes made. Rocky Point Senior Named To Golden Eleven Football Team

Rocky Point High School senior Cody Miller has been selected by the National Football Foundation and the College Hall of Fame, Suffolk County Chapter, as a member of the Golden Eleven football team. The coveted honor selects the top 11 high school scholarathletes in Suffolk County football. “This is great news for a great student,” said District Director of Health, Physical Education, Intramurals and Athletics Charles Delargy. “This honor is one of the most prestigious awards in the county that a high school football player can receive. We are proud of the efforts of Cody, his teammates and Coach Anthony DiLorenzo for this historic honor for the Rocky Point School District athletic program.” Coach DiLorenzo echoed Cody’s outstanding character. “This honor couldn’t have happened to a nicer kid. He is one of the best leaders to come through the Rocky Point athletic program,” he said. To be considered for this honor, Cody had to demonstrate a continued dedication to both academics and athletics – maintaining scholar-athlete status and attaining All-County honors. Selected students are also respected members of the school and local community. Only one student-athlete can be nominated from each school, and selections

are made by a committee of coaches from each conference. In late 2021, Cody was named the Defensive Most Valuable Player in the Suffolk County PAL High School All-Star football game. Cody will be honored with his fellow Golden

Clothing Donations Needed For Long Island Children Ethical Friends of Children, a program helping needy families on Long Island, seeks clothing (tops, bottoms, pjs, sweaters and socks) in certain sizes. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the Rocky Point Middle School robotics team had only one opportunity to compete this year, and they took full advantage. At the Long Island championships, pitted against more than 100 teams from across Long Island, the team

and coach Mark Moorman again brought home a well-earned award. Students Grace Bertino, Matt Blaising, Charlie Hinst, Nathan Watkis and Faith Wozny, who represent the Radical Robotix team, earned third place in the Engineering Excellence category.

The award is noted as a celebration of a team with an efficiently designed robot, an innovative project solution that effectively addresses the season challenge and great Core Values evident in all they do.

Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island is welcoming back its annual tradition of in-person walking of the Stations of the Cross prayer services at the Cemetery of the Holy Rood in Westbury on one of the most solemn days of the Christian calendar during the 2022 Lenten season. One of the largest attended events for Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island, Catholic faithful across Long Island are invited to return and take part in the tradition of following a 1.5-mile walking route throughout Holy Rood to commemorate Christ’s redemptive sacrifice through 14 stations each year on Good Friday, which is April 15th this year. Each station is signified by a different cross/sculpture at the cemetery. Deacons from Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island will assist in leading the service for attendees. The Stations of the Cross walking services were cancelled each of the past two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This year, hundreds are expected to take part in the Good Friday services. Faithful can also experience Holy Rood’s Stations of the Cross on their own with self-directed tours or via a virtual option for those who wish to partake from their homes.
