ard Melville High School’s Key Club shared their love of literature by once again participating in the Stony Brook University Young Scholars Book Drive. Throughout the month-long initiative, the club collected nearly 1,000 gently-used books, which ranged in genres and reading levels. The college’s donations will join those collected by other partnering school districts. Program organizers will sort all items donated to the cause.

Twelve students from Suffolk County Community College have earned The Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence that acknowledges students who have demonstrated and been recognized for their integration of academic excellence with other aspects of their lives including leadership, campus involvement, community service, arts (creative or performing), athletics, and/or career achievement. It is the highest honor bestowed upon a student by the State University of New York. The students were presented with the awards by SUNY Chancellor Dr. Nancy L. Zimpher at a gala ceremony at the Empire Plaza Convention Center in Albany. The Suffolk County Community College students are among nearly 250 students from 64 SUNY campuses to receive the distinguished award, according to Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun L. McKay. “This year’s award recipients,” Dr. McKay said, “represent examples of remarkable academic achievement, creativity and commitment. I and the college community congratulate this year’s awardees who have strived to achieve and earned our system’s highest student

WOMAN OF THE YEAR - Today, Family Residences and Essential Enterprises (FREE) announced that Sue Regan, Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Service Coordinator was honored as “Community Service Woman of the Year” by the Town of Brookhaven Office of Women’s Services.Sue, a resident of Shirley, was nominated for this award by individuals that she supports as part of FREE’s TBI Service program, as well as colleagues and supervisors. Many of her participants, family members supported and team members wrote letters requesting the nomination due to her outstanding advocacy, dedication and excellent service to the men and women that she supports. The awards ceremony took place on March 24th at Brookhaven Town Hall in Farmingville.

Family and Children’s Association (FCA) and The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) – two of Long Island’s most prominent nonprofits - have entered into a strategic partnership that will consolidate administrative functions, reduce operating expenses and most importantly, create a seamless continuum of care for individuals and families struggling with addiction. Under the new arrangement, LICADD has become an affiliate of FCA. Serving Long Island for more than 130 years, FCA is the product of several successful nonprofit mergers and currently manages an integrated network of more than two dozen human service

I was summoned to compose this week’s column, something about “deadlines” and this thing called “Seasons™ Magazine,” whatever that is. Word is, my Human was especially overwhelmed and couldn’t think of anything creative to write. So here I am, yet again, to save the day… From my understanding, there’s a section called “Snippets” in the middle of each edition of the newspaper this week, highlighting aforementioned magazine and its latest spring content. The magazine itself is beautiful, and can be read online by all at: www.seasonsmagazineonline.

com, or purchased for the highly reasonable yearly rate of $24.95. Being, well, not of the Human sort, I can’t say I find the extensive listings of Long Island happenings of much use. My Human rarely moves my new home anymore, so my biggest adventure is pretty much watching her occasionally cook. Speaking of, there are also several tasty recipes to be found in the pages of Seasons™, for those culinary sorts. Who doesn’t love a good meal, right? I know I do. Several per day, in fact. Heck, I’d eat once an hour if she served me. But I digress. Back to the magazine. There are features on Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and Memorial Day, tips on eating healthy and

getting in shape for bathing suit season and… well, you’ll have to read it yourself – I only made it past the Table of Contents. Tiny brain = short attention span. All I know is dinner has been exceptionally late these last several weeks as my Human worked tirelessly to finish putting together the editorial content. It had better be good! And so, once again, I swim in to save the day. Buddy to the rescue! Because, really, who wouldn’t love an endorsement from everyone’s favorite Betta? Eerie - the only word to describe that morning. The morning sun was slowly inching toward the gray sky, revealing a light fog. The mist seemed to grow thicker as the sun crept through its tendrils. Glancing up and down the block, I crossed the street to wait for my bus to come and whisk me off to the hellhole known as high school. The screen of my phone illuminated the vapor that twirled around me, coiling itself around me like a snake squashing its prey. A twig snapped on the lawn behind me, causing me to spin around, getting whipped by my own cherry hair. Squinting my eyes, I scanned the dying lawn, but saw nothing. Unable to shake the thought of someone standing in the darkness, watching me, I stepped further into the protection of the towering street lamp. The dusty yellow glow swallowed me willingly as I wrapped my arms protectively around myself. Antsy, I leaned forward, allowing myself to see past all the parked cars to see the yellow lights of the bus working its way toward me. A sense of relief flooded me. Dropping my guard, a loud banging noise sounded behind me, causing me

Diabetes Self-Management Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone joined Department of Health Commissioner James Tomarken, MD, MPH, MBA, MSW, to invite residents who have diabetes to attend a free program that will enable them to manage their diabetes. The program, conducted by the Department of Health Services in collaboration with Cornell University Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County, comprises four classes that cover suggestions for keeping blood sugar in target range, choosing a healthy meal plan and balancing food, exercise and medications. “These classes will arm participants with the knowledge and skills they need to properly manage their diabetes and enable them to enjoy an improved quality of life,” said Bellone. According to the New York State Department of Health, diabetes is the

By: Shirley Koval Lieberman Spring has sprung, so why haven’t I? The earth is revitalized. Everywhere I look, there are buds bursting to show off their finery. Where is my photosynthesis? If I get too much sun, I get more wrinkles, burnt skin, cancer. No raking or thatching will help me...oh no! The gardeners come and look about. Oh yes my dear, you need some chemicals to kill the weeds, and seeds to fill in the bald spots of grass. Great idea, here comes the retin A, the alphahydroxyl and this and that. The wrinkles keep coming. The hair gets thinner and grows in all the wrong places. And the garden looks great! The trees grow tall and need a trimming. I grow short, I’m never winning. The colors are glorious, the reds, the purples, the whites and yellows. My colors all come out of a jar, a brush, a pencil. IT JUST ISN’T FAIR!

Wowing the Audience A twist on the familiar tale of a wooden boy who comes to life recenty unfolded on the stage at Rocky Point Middle School when the building’s talented student-actors performed “My Son Pinocchio, Jr.” Rehearsing for months under the direction of Donna Collier, producer Greg Maggio and choreographer Jamie Gundersen, the students

perfected the musical’s songs, dances and dialogues before their debut. The show told the classic tale from the perspective of Geppetto, the toymaker who created Pinocchio, and included a variety of familiar and new characters. It featured beloved songs such as “When You Wish Upon a Star” and “I’ve Got No Strings,” alongside a host

of new songs by Oscar and Grammy Award-winner Stephen Schwartz. In addition to two evening shows, daytime performances of the musical were provided for the school’s sixthgrade class and students at Frank J. Carasiti Elementary School. A preview of the musical was shown at Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School.

Trivia Team Advances Ward Melville High School’s Academic Challenges Club has continued its impressive winning streak and is now headed for the Regional Final Quiz Bowl Tournament this April. The teams advanced after an impressive victory over Smithtown High School East in a trivia

showdown at the Quiz Bowl Competition. The stakes were high for the final match of the regular season and Ward Melville’s teams rose to the occasion. Competing with one player down, the varsity team members won a stunning victory of 17629 while the junior varsity members finished their

undefeated season with an outstanding final score of 164-62 and remain the top team in their division. During the finals they will compete against the top 20 junior varsity and varsity teams from across Long Island to determine the region’s top trivia teams.
