The Smithers Family Center at Columbia University Medical Center for prevention, research and treatment opened last year. The Smithers family is proud of LICADD and its

success in helping millions of people across the New York area. This year’s Keynote Speaker will be Filmmaker Greg Williams. His groundbreaking documentary, The Anonymous People, highlights the importance of sharing recovery stories in order to decrease stigma and inspire more people to get help. For 61 years, LICADD is

Caregivers’ Ball

RotaCare, a not-forprofit organization that facilitates free health care for those most in need on Long Island, is honoring three outstanding community leaders at the 23rd Anniversary RotaCare Caregivers’ Ball on April 27th, at 6 p.m. at the Cherry Valley Club in Garden City. Receiving this year’s Distinguished Leader Excellence Award is Marian Conway, Ph.D., the Executive Director of New York Community Bank Foundation, a Long Island regional philanthropic foundation, where she works with nonprofits to build capacity and improve governance. She has been a supporter and good friend to RotaCare over the years. The American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI) will receive the Distinguished Community Service Award for supporting RotaCare to ensure that all patients have access to the medications they need, as well as providing volunteer healthcare professionals at clinics. The Humanitarian Service Award will be presented to Jane and

Martin Schwartz for their years of leadership and guidance of RotaCare and their generous financial support. A special Paul Harris Award will be presented posthumously to Millicent “Hope” Treiber, a dedicated nurse and loving mom, who embodied RotaCare’s values to provide care to all without judgement or prejudice. For 25 years, RotaCare has served to make Long Island’s most vulnerable families stronger and healthier by assisting them with healthcare challenges. Says RotaCare Board President Mary Beth Welsh, “Through generous support and partnership, RotaCare has created a space where people in need can access healthcare in a dignified and respectful setting. This makes a big difference, not only for RotaCare patients, but for the overall health of our communities.” RotaCare operates at the A. and support staff provide more than $4 million of free medical services to those most in need. At the conclusion of the meeting, students presented Assemblyman Thiele with a Certification of Appreciation for taking the time to speak with them about the Executive Budget, state aid, and education.

Driving Safely

Approximately 300 Ward Melville High School students recently learned about the dangers of distracted driving during a simulated Safety Town program provided by the

Town of Brookhaven. During the event, Al Ferrari spoke with the students about the dangers of impaired and distracted driving and invited the attendees to take part

in several hands-on engagement stations. Participating in the simulation activities, the students were able to understand the importance of not being distracted while driving. They learned where to put their phone in the car while driving so they will not be tempted to look at it and even wore impairment goggles while driving gocarts, operatizing a diving video game and navigating miniature cars on sticks through a map to simulate the dangers of driving while under the influence of substances. Over 800 runners participated in the Run for Tomorrow’s Hope, a 5K charity race/fun run hosted by St. Joseph School in Garden City. The event, now in its second year, drew runners from as far east as Greenport, and as far west as Brooklyn. This year’s 812 participants, along with sponsoring businesses and families raised over $18,000 for the Tomorrow’s Hope Foundation, the Long Island based charity that supports Catholic elementary students and schools. In addition to a 7:30 a.m. Mass prior to the event, Bishop John Barres was on hand to meet and greet the organizations and individuals supporting the event. Bishop Barres offered a blessing to both the fun run participants and to the race participants

prior to the two starts. Race Director Dr. Michael Spinelli said, “We are very pleased with the support this race has gained within the community, and grateful for the support of the businesses, families and participants that make this possible,” said Dr. Spinelli. “The Tomorrow’s Hope Foundation is an outstanding local charity and the St. Joseph’s School parent and business community comes together in a powerful way to support the children and families of Long Island’s Catholic Elementary Schools,” said Spinelli. Vice Chairman of the Tomorrow’s Hope Foundation and run supporters Frank Liantonio and Chris Tully were on hand to thank supporters personally. Said Liantonio,

“The Tomorrow’s Hope Foundation has provided financial assistance to over 17,000 students who might not otherwise have been able to attend Catholic elementary school since its inception eleven years ago. Support from Long Island businesses and individuals is at the heart of what we do and there is no greater demonstration of that support than what we see at this great event.” Noteworthy supporting organizations included Sacred Heart High School, Chaminade High School and Kellenberg High School, each with a significant presence at the event and large numbers of students and faculty participating. The St. Joe’s Cup, a trophy acknowledging the elementary school other than the host school with

the largest number of participants went to Long Beach Catholic Regional School with St. Martin of Tours School in Amityville right on their heels. Private running clubs were well represented by the TSC Track Club from Floral Park sending a large, and fast, group of runners. As a USATAF Certified/ Sanctioned 5K Course, all participants in the race were chipped for exact timing, and the course for precise distance. There were gold, silver and bronze medals awarded in a variety of age brackets as well as a few categories that were purely fun. Some of the noteworthy performances included a second win in a row for women’s overall winner Lauryn Heskin. Lauryn, representing the TSC Track Club set a record

with her 2016 run, and was the first women’s finisher again in 2017 with a time of 18:30.7. Lauryn was slightly off her 2016 pace because Lauryn, an eighth grader, had a busier than normal personal schedule with preparation for the Catholic High School entrance exam and more pressing scholastic responsibilities this year. TSC Track Club members Sophia Muccini and Siena Muccini were second and third respectively for a 1, 2, 3 sweep of the podium positions. The three of them are 13, 14 and 12 years-old. The overall winner, and first in the men’s group, was Francis O’Brien with a time of 16:47.9. He was followed closely by Patrick Conklin at 16:51.6 and Christopher Strzelinski with a time of 16:57.7.

The event was covered by Telecare TV, the National Catholic television network that operates from here on Long Island and covered by Telecare’s own host Karen Smith. In addition to covering the event for Telecare, Smith competed in the event and won first place as the fastest women’s Catholic educator with a time of 27:27.3. While the podium was dominated by young runners the event drew runners from every age group and acknowledged their accomplishments. Even former St. Joseph’s Principal Eileen Kilbriide came out and ran in the event, winning in her age group. Said Kilbride, “This is a wonderful cause and they deserve our support.”

On March 22nd, Councilwoman Valerie M. Cartright honored the recipients of the Three Village Historical Society Awards during a ceremony and dinner held at the Old Field Club. Each year, the society presents the awards to recipients such as local homeowners and youth, members of local businesses and society members who have made significant contributions to preserving the shared heritage within the Three Village Area. Tracy Trypuc, RN, MPH, MBA, BSN, was honored with a proclamation by the Suffolk County Legislature for her contributions to public health over 10 years as a member of the Suffolk County Board of Health. Whereas: Tracy’s reputation earned her an invitation to be the first woman and registered nurse to serve on the Suffolk County Board of

Health, a position she assumed in February, 2007. For seven years, she served as the Board’s Vice President. Tracy investigated important matters affecting the lives of Suffolk County residents and over her 10 year term, she researched and advocated on the issues of Energy Drinks, Powdered Caffeine, Hookah Lounges, Tattoo

Regulations, E-Cigarettes, Water Quality and much more. Tracy is a resident of the Three Village Area, and a dual Masters graduate of Stony Brook University. Historical Society Honorees

Reading Support Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School students in the Rocky Point School District read thousands of pages as they took part in a read-athon to raise funds for the Madagascar Ankizy Fund this spring. Throughout the initiative, students were encouraged to secure sponsors to pledge a penny for each page of a book read. This tradition began in 1999 and, since its inception, they have raised enough money to build a school in Madagascar called Manobo. Annually, JAE works to raise $1,000, which is enough money to cover the salaries of the two teachers at the school.

This year, the school raised more than $1,600. To kick off the event, the students were visited by two third-year dental students, Rita O’Dwyer and Sarah Lukeman, as they discussed their work in Madagascar and shared pictures. At the conclusion of the read-a-thon, the school was visited by Eric Callendar from the Reptile Edventure. Mr. Callendar not only showcased several reptiles but also spoke about the importance of conservation and his work in Madagascar. According to their website, the goals of the Madagascar Ankizy Fund (ankizy means children in the Malagasy language)

are to build schools and hold clinics in remote areas of Madagascar. They also support basic health and hygiene by providing training, digging clean water wells, distributing mosquito nets and installing latrines. The Madagascar Ankizy Fund was founded in 1998 by paleontologist Dr. David W. Krause, a professor in the Department of Anatomical Sciences at Stony Brook University. Dr. Krause, as well as various colleagues and students involved in paleontological research in Madagascar, are committed to improving the lives of Malagasy children.

Val & Sal Named The Earl L. Vandermeulen High School has announced Chiara Rabeno and Xinyi Hong as the Class of 2017 valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively. Rabeno and Hong have earned the top spots in their class through their impressive and outstanding commitment to academics. Valedictorian Chiara Rabeno has earned a number of academic accomplishments throughout her high school career. She earned a gold award three years in a row on the National Latin Exam, is an AP Scholar

with Honor and received a National Merit Scholar letter of accommodation. Throughout high school, she has participated in sports, including softball and field hockey where she earned an All-Conference title two years in a row and is a member of the Interact Club, Environmental Club, Science Olympiad and participates in the STEM program. She is also president of the National Honor Society. Rabeno plans to study either biological sciences or biochemistry in college in the fall. Salutatorian Xinyi Hong has also received a number

of academic accolades. She is a National Merit Finalist, received a gold award for three years in a row on the National Latin Exam, earned the American Chemical Society Award and is an AP Scholar with Distinction. In high school, she has served as co-caption of the Science Olympiad team, and treasurer of the Environmental Club. She also sits as first chair viola in the school’s orchestra and also plays the violin. In college, Hong plans to pursue study in a field related to science.

Design Lessons As they prepared to publish the 2017 literary magazine, Literary Travelers, R.C. Murphy Junior High School’s literary magazine club members met with published artist Michael Grever and learned about new design techniques and

layout trends. Mr. Grever, who is the brother of club adviser Julie Grever, is a graphic designer for a textbook company and has been published in magazines and newspapers both in the United States and abroad. During the workshop, he

spoke with the students about what makes a visually appealing layout, showed them how he lays out the textbooks and provided some pointers on the work they are doing with this year’s literary magazine.

R.C. Murphy and Paul J. Gelinas junior high schools each had a team compete against over 25 other schools in Suffolk County with the top two schools advancing to the Tournament of Champions.

Gelinas’ team members Ivan Ge, Alexander Lin, Robin Xiong, Nancy Zhong and Julia Zhu took the first-place prize. Murphy’s team members Matthew Chen, Animesh Ghose, Neil Mehta, Jessica Liao and Claire Yang took the second-place prize. Claire Yang also was the seventh-grade individual winner of the tournament with Alexander Lin, Robin Xiong and Ivan Ge taking second, third and fourth.

Bear-y Good Time As a conclusion to their multiweek study of bears, kindergarten students in Dawn McNally’s class at W.S. Mount Elementary School in the Three Village Central School District celebrated the start of the spring season with a bearthemed brunch.

During the unit, the students learned about four types of bears – polar, black, panda and brown – as well as their habitats and their adaptations. Students were interested to learn about the bears’ different types of fur and the extra layer of blubber

that protects them from the cold. During the brunch, the students dressed as their favorite type of bear and feasted on items included in the traditional bear diet. These included pretzel “twigs,” gold “fish,” berries, honey and apples.

Learning Hygiene More than 300 Miller Place School District Kindergarten - 1st grade students at Andrew Muller Primary School recently learned how to properly care for teeth and gums from local dental hygienists.

The interactive lesson was part of the District’s Social Studies and Health education programs. The students listened eagerly as the visiting hygienists read age-appropriate books to the students and used props to demonstrate good

oral hygiene. Following the event every student received a dental hygiene kit, including a toothbrush, toothpaste and floss to take home.

Lourdes Diaz, RN, of Holbrook, Jean Gordon, RN, of Lindenhurst, and Patricia Bergmann, RN, of Sound Beach, were nominated for this recognition program, which is sponsored by Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory, by James L.
