City Strolls have been documented in past columns - my futile attempt to cross as many of these “bucket list” items off of said list. From trying to time our return trip over the BK bridge to photograph sunset {while toting nearly an entire leftover pizza from Grimaldi’s} … to finding a “shortcut” through the Park that somehow managed to add about five miles to the journey … to winding up on the steps of Lincoln Center thoroughly out of breath, shoes in hand (documented in one of aforementioned past columns), just in the knick of time for the ballet … the stories are endless and, in retrospect, quite funny. And yet, there remain so many more nooks and crannies left to explore, museum exhibits to browse, restaurants to sample, culture to take in. Of course, there are
activities to indulge in during any season in New York; it’s just, the thought of exploring them seems particularly inviting in the spring. Perhaps this month, maybe next. Path to be determined. {And, inevitably, rerouted. Several times.} I have often thought how nice it would be to reside right there, at the center of it all. But, as with most things, it seems the daily routine is what ultimately wears on people and strips away the novelty of living in one of the greatest cities in the world. Visiting, however often - or seldom - it might be, keeps the perspective fresh and full of untapped adventure and excitement. So does randomly wandering the city streets with a good friend {and a spare pair of slippers} in tow. Happy trails!

These words bring to mind many fond memories of days spent adventuring through Central Park and traversing the city streets from the upper west side all the way down to the Brooklyn Bridge and back again. It’s true what they say that you can literally spend an entire day in just a few square blocks and still not manage to see even a fraction of what that neighborhood has to offer. While I have resided within a mere hour’s drive of Manhattan for the entirety of my life, I am ashamed to say there are countless landmarks and tourist attractions I have yet to take the opportunity to appreciate. In recent years, I have traversed miles of city blocks on foot with one particularly adventurous friend for various shenanigans, some of which

Friends of Karen
Friends of Karen is a nonprofit organization that supports critically-ill children and their families. This year, they are celebrating their 40th anniversary; four decades of bringing help, hope and support to over 15,000 children and their families in the tri-state area. In 1978, Friends of Karen began with one family, one child, Karen MacInnes; and one inspired woman, Sheila Petersen, who wanted to sustain her close friends through the devastating illness of their daughter. Today, Friends of Karen serves hundreds of families by providing emotional, financial and advocacy support to children with life-threatening illnesses, and to their families in order to help keep them stable, functioning and able to cope, at no cost. To apply for help, a parent or guardian of the ill child must call the organization and speak to a member of their Family Support Team. Friends of Karen often hosts or participates in many events within their community. On Saturday, May 5th and Sunday, May 6th, they are hosting a team in the Long Island Marathon at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow. Saturday will be a 5K and Sunday will be a 10K. They are looking for people to join their Friends of Karen team and to
cross the finish line knowing they’re making a difference in the lives of many. If you are interested in participating in either or both of these races with colleagues, as a family or individually, you can sign up today! Additionally, if you are interested in volunteering your time preparing for the event - handing out t-shirts, making sure every participant has what he or she needs, etc.; or at the event - taking photos for promotional purposes, you can do so. The tree I love, she stands so tall. In the Autumn, all of her leaves do fall. Now in December, I take a glance and see snow has covered each and every branch. In the Spring, on her rebirth, tiny buds I see each day. I wait and look each and every day for the buds to say Spring is here. The birds have time to nest, the squirrels frolic up and down. Book Contest Winner Three Village Central School District’s R.C. Murphy Junior High School ninth-grade student Rebecca Blumenthal has been named the first-place
bound and become part of the children’s library’s permanent collection. She will also be presented with a $400 scholarship.
Three R.C. Murphy Junior High School students – Shahzadi Adeena, Alana John and Claire Yang – have earned national recognition in the 2018 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards competition. Shahzadi earned a gold medal for her “A Spectrum of Blue” poem, Alana earned a silver medal for her “Words of the Refuse” poem, and
Claire earned a silver medal for her flash fiction piece “Peach.” These students have been identified by panels of creative professionals as the most talented young artists and writers in the nation. Of the 350,000 pieces of writing and art submitted, only 3,259 won national medals and represent the top 1 percent of the work submitted.
As a gold medalist, Shahzadi, her parents and Murphy English Chairperson Catherine Duffy will be traveling to Carnegie Hall on June 7th, where she will receive her gold medal at the national ceremony. Marc Brown, alumnus and author of the “Arthur” series, will be the keynote speaker.

that packed the school’s auditoriums during the regular shows, each school showcased this year’s musical during free daytime performances for the district’s sixthgraders and senior citizen community.
Arrowhead Elementary School students in the Three Village Central School District sifted through dozens of pennies over the past two months in search of the oldest penny in the community - a challenge that was
sparked by the local Gold Coast Bank branch. The contest winner was Charlotte Plagainos, a kindergartner who found a penny from 1802. The runner-up was JamesHenry Parkinson, a fourthgrader whose penny was
dated 1847. For their participation in the contest, Charlotte was awarded a $100 prize, James-Henry was presented with $50 prize and the school’s PTA was the recipient of a $500 prize.

Ward Melville High School juniors Jillian Bove and Ally Szema spearheaded a fun-filled badminton tournament this March that helped to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The event was sponsored by the school’s HOSA club sponsored in Jillian and Ally’s name, with all donations the tournament benefiting their team 3vforacure. Also in attendance was special
guest, Brandon Bloom, who attends Arrowhead and is a survivor. Brandon welcomed all 21 teams to the event with his family in the opening remarks. The team and HOSA are hard at work raising awareness for all blood cancers in the hopes of raising $50,000 in seven short weeks for a great cause as part of the Students of the Year initiative. Students throughout the nation are nominated to participate in
a fundraising competition to benefit the society’s mission, and the team that raises the most money by the awards celebration on April 26th will be named “Student(s) of the Year.” There is still time to donate, with the late April deadline approaching. P.J. Gelinas and R.C. Murphy junior high schools Science Olympiad teams recently dominated the competition during this year’s Eastern Regional tournament, as the two Three Village schools had teams ranked second and first, respectively. Murphy’s A team won nine first-place medals, five second-
place medals and four third-place medals. Their lowest place was third in all of the events that they competed in. Gelinas’ A Team won eight first-place medals, three secondplace medals and four third-place medals. Both of the schools B teams finished in the top five, with the Gelinas B placing fourth and winning 14
medals, and the Murphy B finishing fifth and winning 13 medals. The Murphy C team placed 17th winning four medals and Gelinas C team placed 14th winning four medals. Now, the schools will be represented by one team each at the New York State Science Olympiad competition, which will be held on April 13th-14th.
Poetic Tribute Students in Kayleen Everitt’s eighth-grade English classes at Port Jefferson Middle School took a unique route in using their intellectual skills to examine and understand world history: before welcoming Werner Reich, a Holocaust survivor, as a guest speaker, they honored him with a poetic tribute of their own inspiring thoughts. After an introduction by student Kyle Johnson, who thanked Reich for sharing his firsthand account of
the events of the Nazi Germany genocide, student Kasumi Layne-Stasik read German theologian Martin Niemöller’s well-known poem “First they came…” and explained that the students rephrased it in their own writings to correspond with issues of today including among other topics gun violence, conservation and equality between men and women in hopes of inspiring change.
