Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone released the following statement in response to the FDA releasing the agency’s proposed regulations restricting e-cigarette sales. “New enforcement actions are needed immediately to curb the vaping epidemic that has taken our youth by storm. While we have taken swift action in Suffolk to crack down on the illegal sale of e-cigarettes to minors by increasing penalties and continue to implement new educational programs, the time has come for the FDA to step in and regulate these sweet, fruit flavored e-cigarettes that are targeting our young ones and causing serious damage to their health.”

April’s Charity of the Month is: Operation S.P.L.A.S.H.
In honor of Earth Day, an annual event celebrated on April 22nd, which brings awareness about environmental conservation, I chose an eco-friendly non-profit on Long Island that strives to help conserve our island.
Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is a non-profit volunteer ran organization that is committed to improving the quality of life on Long Island Shores. Their mission is to provide a low cost solution to the growing problem of waterfront pollution through public awareness, community action and your participation. S.P.L.A.S.H. stands for Stop Polluting, Littering and Save Harbors. Joanne and Al Grover started Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. in 1990. 2019 is their 29th year of cleaning up our bays, beaches and waterways. Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. has grown from 1 person to several thousand concerned members in 7 chapters dotted all along Long Island’s South Shore.
This organization has 7 boats that go out in our waterways to patrol and pick-up trash and debris between March and November. All of the boats are operated by volunteer captains and crews that give their time to go out on clean-up trips. Clean-up trips usually last about 3 hours. After their boats are taken out of the water for the season, they bring them back to their Freeport headquarters and immediately start to work on them to get them ready for the next season. They have rescued 2,498,267 pounds of trash from our waters in 28 years! The amazing impact that Long Island Waterways sees from the work of Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is something each of us should be thankful for! Love? Love is the most cherished gift that life has to offer. It is also one of life’s greatest mysteries with myriad questions to ponder. Your heart starts to pound, your palms get sweaty, your mind drifts to that person day and night and you may be exhilarated and scared all at the same time. That is the beginning stage of romantic love. Five years later, and perhaps a marriage, children and a mortgage later, you’re no longer jittery around that person, you can definitely focus on your daily tasks, and in fact, you may not think about your significant other for hours at a time while at work. You may even hit a slump where you find yourself questioning, “Am I still in love?” The beginning stages of love are just that; the beginning stages. Love is not defined by a list of symptoms like the flu. It’s not a specific destination nor is it an elusive fairytale. The beauty of love is in the journey, and if we are lucky, that journey can last decades where love deepens and takes on many different forms. In fact, there are times where
we may not even like someone we love, but we would still run to their side or have their back at the drop of a hat (even if we have a scowl on our face while doing it). There are many forms of love. We love our parents, siblings, children, friends, animal companions and life partners. We can love looking at a rainbow or a sunset; and we may love God if that is how we choose to express our faith. Love is not to be judged, but experienced. The beauty of love is that it pulls us out of time and space, and brings us into the present moment. It also helps us in our growth and development as human beings. You cannot grow and expand without experiencing love in all its forms. Love can also be as simple as loving yourself, which is essential before you can love anything or anyone else. The old saying, “You cannot give away what you do not have,” has never been truer. No matter who you are, know that you are not deficient in love, because you are love. Our endless capacity for love is the greatest superpower we possess.

How we define it, measure it, express it, give it and receive it is instrumental in defining the parameters by which we live. We’ve all heard people say things like, “I want to be defined by this,” or “I don’t want to be defined by that.” You are not defined by past mistakes, nor are you defined by what you percieve as your greatest worldly achievements. We are all defined by our ability to give and receive love. You may at times question the love in your life, particularly as it pertains to romantic love. If you are in a new relationship that is still blossoming, enjoy the ride and know that in order for love to grow, it needs to mature into a deeper, more comfortable love. If you are in a longterm relationship or a marriage and you are longing for the days of new love, remind yourself that just as you would not regress to being a baby or a child again, your ripened and developed love could not and should not regress to that of brand new love. Enjoy the richness and depth of well worn love.

Artichoke Pie By Deanna N. of Islip
Deanna of Islip says her family's Artichoke Pie is typically served as a side (vegetable) dish, but is delicious heated up the next day for lunch, too! "My mom, Connie, would make this Artichoke Pie recipe as one of the many dishes at holiday gatherings in her home," says Deanna. "Mom passed away last year, just before Easter, at the age of 99. Her recipes will always be a part of our family celebrations as we honor her memory."
chopped & sautéed in oil ¼ cup of Parmesan cheese 2 tbs. milk 2 homemade or frozen 9 inch pie crusts Preparation Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Combine diced artichoke hearts, mozzarella, eggs, salt, pepper, garlic parmesan cheese and milk into a large bowl. Mix well. Pour into bottom pie crust. Cover with top crust, pressing to seal the edges. Bake for 30 to 40 minutes (ovens and preference varies).
Recipe makes 6-8 servings. A Penguin Celebration As a conclusion to their study of penguins, firstgrade students in Jennifer Meschi’s class at Frank J. Carasiti Elementary School in the Rocky Point Union Free School District participated in a special reader’s theater celebration. During the event, family and friends were invited to the classroom to listen to the students read their fiction Pet Penguin stories, share details from their
research charts, discuss nonfiction penguin books and reveal the life size penguins they drew. Wearing black and white, the students also enjoyed making a handprint craft, singing songs and were pleasantly surprised when Ms. Meschi transformed into a penguin costume. A special part of this year’s celebration was focused on a community service project. Students and families collected
recyclable bottles to raise money to “adopt” an endangered African penguin from the Georgia aquarium. In total, the class collected 1,082 bottles, which were exchanged for the monetary donation for the aquarium. For their efforts, the class received a special adoption kit, including an adoption certificate, fact sheet and plush replica African penguin.
STEM Filled Seuss Project The traditional Read Across America initiative was celebrated in a fun and unique way in Jennifer Meschi’s first-grade class at Rocky Point’s Frank J. Carasiti Elementary School as students took part in a number of STEM activities, reading and writing.
Making it a spirit week, which commenced the week after Dr. Seuss’ birthday, the students wore different coordinating outfits to match with one of the class’ favorite Dr. Seuss book. In addition, they completed several STEMbased activities based on
those stories, including building parachutes for “Oh the Places You’ll Go” and building cup towers to resemble “The Cat in the Hat’s” famous red and white striped hat.

Creativity and outstanding writing talents have led fourthgrade students in Patricia Alberti’s class at Rocky Point’s Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School the opportunity to become published authors in an upcoming edition of Newsday’s Kidsday. For the past several
weeks the students have been working with editor Pat Mullooly to draft a variety of feature articles, surveys and puzzles in collaboration and independently. In addition to their work in the classroom, four students were invited to the Paramount Theater in Huntington to interview
America’s Got Talent sensation “We Three.” “The students prepared well-researched questions, as all good journalists do,” said Ms. Alberti. “They were treated to free seats at the concert that night!” The class’s completed works will be published in Newsday from July 13-19.

Leo’s project focused on how human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) causes acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), which weakens the body’s ability to fight infection. “Our
research strongly indicates that a recently discovered protein, CCDC11, is required for efficient budding of HIV particles from cells,” Leo Takemaru explained. “Therefore, inhibition of CCDC11 may be an effective method to fight HIV-1 in the future.” Kelsey focused on the identification and evaluation of the manifest ways in which tropical cyclone and hurricane evolution has changed during the past four decades. Factors quantifying the intensity, intensification and shortterm changes of each
cyclone were analyzed over time and assessed for statistical significance. Then, these trends were compared to heat, moisture and wind composition values. This two-prong approach points to the long-term environmental changes that are associated with these trends and how they may be related to climate change. During the international competition, Kelsey and Leo will be competing against students from around the world for a top prize of $75,000.
Humor, History and Harmony Port Jefferson’s Earl L. Vandermeulen High School’s high-spirited and entertaining spring musical gave the audience history lessons and glimpses into New York lifestyles and landmarks when the drama club showcased “Celebrate New York: A Musical Tribute to the Empire State” on the school’s stage. Directed by Tony Butera,
the unique look at all things New York highlighted the fast pace of Manhattan, the competitive rehearsals for Broadway shows, the birthplace of Teddy Roosevelt and how the world came to know the teddy bear. It also chronicled historic events and venues, tourism, the rush for morning coffee and so much more. The production’s talented
students even gave a nod to several of the district’s own who have achieved notable recognition after graduation from the high school. The hard work, dedication and months of planning and rehearsals were met with positive reviews for the actors, musical performers, stage and costume crews and Butera.

Mathematical Constant In honor of the mathematical constant better known as Pi, students throughout the Rocky Point School District participated in a number of creative activities. Fourth-grade students in Kristie Jackson’s, Deborah Vieira’s and Lisa Celentano’s classes at Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School participated in a number hands-on activities. From measuring circular snacks to creating pizza pie circles, these students
ate their way to learning how to measure the circumference of a circle. As a culminating activity, the children developed Pi Day booklets to display all the knowledge they learned throughout the day. Furthermore, Christian Flemming was challenged by his teacher to memorize the mathematical constant for Pi and he was able to recite 46 digits after the irrational number 3.14. Rocky Point High School Math team organized a
fundraiser in honor of the day to benefit the Madagascar Ankizy Fund, an organization committed to improving the lives of Malagasy children. Students and teachers donated funds to pie their favorite teacher in the face with whipped cream pies. More than $250 was raised during the event, which was donated to aid a school in Madagascar supported over the years by district students and dubbed “The Rocky Point School.”
