Are we done with the random, sudden snowstorms - you know, the ones originally forecast as a 50% chance of rain? Can we begin the planting process without fear of our blossoms being petrified by the next deep freeze? One can only hope. At least baseball is back. Both New York teams seem to have great potential for success this season, assuming everyone stays healthy and on the

roster for more than a month, of course. Being a lifelong Yankees fan, the biggest attraction is the thrill of witnessing Derek Jeter’s farewell season, a celebration of a true class act. Along with the start of spring sports comes the prospect of beach weather just beyond the horizon, outdoor concerts and long, lazy afternoons spent in the warmth of the sun. Well, in an ideal world, anyway. For those of us in the workforce, the weekends are the only time to truly capitalize – and doesn’t it

always seem like it rains on those days? Of course, there’s something to be said for tackling that “spring” cleaning we’ve been putting off for the last year or so. Submitted By Michael Sceiford - Edward Jones Port Jefferson It may not be all that much fun to file your taxes, but, while you’re working on them, you do get to eagerly anticipate that one big question: Will I or won’t I get a tax refund? If you receive a refund, you’ll have to answer another question: What should I do with it? Your answer may depend, at least in part, on the size of your refund. In 2013, the average federal tax refund was about $2,650. Of course, your refund may be less than this amount (although it could also be more), but if you were to receive a $2,650 refund this year, what would you do with it? For one thing, you could put the money into an IRA. In 2014, you can put in up to $5,500 to a traditional or Roth IRA, so your $2,650 would represent nearly half your total yearly contribution. (If you’re 50 or older, you can put in up to another $1,000, for a total limit of $6,500.) But even if you only put in that $2,650, and you left it alone, it could grow significantly. In fact, after 30 years, your $2,650 would have grown to more than $20,000, assuming no further contributions and a hypothetical 7 percent annual return. And if you were able to put in that same $2,650 every single year for 30 years, again earning the same hypothetical 7 percent annual return, you would end up with almost $268,000*. Keep in mind, though, that you will eventually be taxed on your traditional IRA earnings. Earnings in a Roth IRA can be withdrawn tax-free, provided you don’t start taking withdrawals until you’re 59-1/2 and you’ve had your account at least five years. While funding your IRA certainly can be beneficial, it’s not the only choice you have for making good use of your tax refund. Here are a few other possibilities: • Pay off some debts. If you have a large tax refund, you could use the money to retire some debts, or at least cut them down to a more manageable size. And the lower your debt load, the more money you will have available to invest for your future. • Help build an emergency fund. It’s a good idea to build an emergency fund containing six to 12 months’ worth of living expenses, with the money held in a low-risk, liquid account. Without such a fund, you may be forced to dip into your long-term investments to pay for short-term needs, such as a new furnace, a major car repair or a sizable medical bill. Consequently, you may want to put some, or all,

This makes it easier to reassemble and ensures the cabinets and their hinges will align properly once you have finished painting. Don’t paint dirty surfaces. Cabinet surfaces have likely collected their share of dirt, grease and grime over the years, so you want to clean these surfaces thoroughly before painting. Once surfaces have been cleaned, rinse them off and give them ample time to dry. Sand the surfaces. Once the surfaces have been cleaned and are completely dry, it’s time to start sanding them. Lightly sand the doors using a wood sanding block, working to create a firm base to which fresh paint can easily adhere. Areas that are most exposed to wear and tear may require some extra elbow grease, and some areas may be especially flaky. When old paint is flaking off, this means the previous finish did not adhere very well to the surface, which is not necessarily uncommon in kitchens, where moisture and grease residue can make it harder for paint to adhere to the surface. In such instances, sand the flaky areas to the bare wood before spot-priming with a primer or sealer designed for areas with heavy staining. After all of the sanding is complete, vacuum the surfaces to ensure there is no leftover sanding dust before painting. Apply primer-sealer. Primer-sealer ensures the fresh paint will bond well to the surfaces, preventing conditions like flaking in the future. Paint the cabinets. After the primer-sealer has been applied, it’s time to paint the cabinets. Begin with the inside edges and openings of the face frames, followed by the outer cabinet sides and then the front of the frames. Then move on to the cabinet doors

and any drawer fronts you might be painting as well. Cabinets with more elaborate designs require closer attention to detail than flat cabinets. When painting, opt for thin coats, which dry more quickly and also create fewer visible brushstrokes. When applying multiple coats, allow the paint ample time to dry between coats. Four hours between

coats is a good rule of thumb, and lightly resand all surfaces before applying the second and final coat of paint. Reassemble the cabinets. Once the final coat of paint has fully dried, carefully reassemble your cabinets and then enjoy the fresh and inexpensive new look that your freshly painted cabinets have created.

kitchen cabinets a new color or simply giving fading cabinets a fresh coat of paint can instantly add life to a kitchen, giving the room an entirely different feel without breaking the bank. The following are a few tips for homeowners planning to paint their kitchen cabinets. Assess your existing cabinets. Some cabinet materials, including wood and metal, can be repainted without much of a fuss. But other materials, including plastic laminate, are not so amenable to repainting, and will likely require specialty paints. Homeowners with plastic laminate cabinets should first paint a spot or two with a sample paint, being careful to choose a spot that’s concealed. If the paint bonds well to the plastic laminate, then you can go forward and buy enough paint to redo all of the cabinets. If the paint does not take, consult a professional to find a paint that’s likely to be a better fit. Expect this process to be one of trial and error. Plan for ornate cabinets to take a little longer. Painting projects will go faster when cabinets have flat fronts, but they can take considerably longer when cabinets are unique and more detailed. If your cabinets are ornate, then factor this extra time into your schedule. Remove the doors and hardware. When painting cabinets, it’s best to essentially disassemble them, removing the doors, handles, knobs, latches, and any additional hardware. When removing hardware, be sure to set them aside in clearly marked plastic bags so it’s easier to reassemble the cabinets once the fresh coat of paint has dried. As doors are removed, number each door and its corresponding location, much like products that require assembly are numbered at the factory.

On To The Next Journey

I got in! Last week, as I was going through my e-mails, I was pleasantly surprised to see one addressed from Emory University. It told me to check the online portal to learn of my admission decision. Thankfully, when I checked the website, I was accepted. Located in Atlanta, Georgia, Emory University is one of the nation’s leading schools for Business and Journalism. Luckily, these are the two fields I have interest in pursuing. Emory University is the twentieth ranked college in the United States of America. Although not many

people from Long Island have heard of Emory, the opportunities that it will afford me are endless. As I was admitted into Oxford College, one of Emory’s freshman and sophomore institutions, I will be an upperclassman during my second year. This would allow me to take advantage of the leadership positions historically reserved for seniors. Involving myself in oncampus happenings will strengthen my application for graduate school and enrich my campus experience. Even though Emory is very far away, it has a perfect mix of urban

to help feed the hungry dogs of Long Island. All 10 Pet Supplies Plus locations on Long Island have participated in a “buy a pound/donate a pound” program to benefit pets in need. During the donation period of February 10th to March 9th, for every pound of Evo, Innova, Cal Natural, Iams or Eukanuba dog food purchased at a Pet Supplies Plus store, Natura donated a pound to the local food bank. 80,000 pounds of dog food was sent in full trailer trucks on March Pet Supplies Plus and Iams & Eukanuba pet foods 24th and March 26th to Natura, the makers of Evo, have donated more than Long Island Cares, who Innova, California Natural, 80,000 pounds of dog food graciously accepted the

huge donation and made space in their warehouse. Pet Supplies Plus owner Stanley Lang says that, “Making sure that the animals of Long Island are properly fed and taken care of is near and dear to our hearts here at Pet Supplies Plus. Continued From 10 Vegetables generally need ample warmth and sunlight to thrive, so find an area of the yard that gets several hours of direct sunlight per day. A sunny spot is good, but you also want a location with adequate drainage so your garden does not succumb to flooding or fungus during and after heavy downpours. Don’t place the garden too close to rain gutters or near a pool, where splashout may occur. Select a location that is isolated from pets so the plants are not trampled and cats and dogs do not relieve themselves nearby. Decide What To Plant When deciding what to plant, consider what you eat and how much produce the household consumes, then choose vegetables that fit with your diet. Some vegetables, like peppers, tomatoes, eggplant, and squash, produce throughout the

season. Others, such as carrots and corn, produce one crop and then expire. Plan accordingly when you purchase plants or seeds, as you want enough food but not so much that it will go to waste. Choose three to four different vegetables and plant them in the garden. Select varieties that require similar soil conditions, so that you can adjust the pH and mix of the soil accordingly. This will serve as good practice, particularly the first year of your garden. After you have mastered the basics, you can branch out into other produce. Know When To Plant Many of the foods grown in vegetable gardens, including tomatoes and peppers, are summer vegetables, which means they reach peak ripeness after the height of the summer season. Pumpkins, brussel sprouts and peas are planted to be harvested later on. These plants may be put in the

ground a little later than others. It is less expensive to start seedlings indoors and then transplant them to a garden when the time comes. Seeds can be started three to four weeks before they would be put outdoors. Many vegetables are planted outside in April or May, but definitely after frost conditions have waned. Read seed packets to know exactly when to plant or consult with the nursery where you purchased established seedlings. Students, faculty and family members at Frank J. Carasiti Elementary School in the Rocky Point School District have donated hundreds of gently used clothing items to stock the shelves of a new community resource in the building. The Friends Just Care closet was initiated by the building’s student assistance counselor Jamie Adamski and teachers

Danielle Youngs and Nicole Fernandez to help provide local families in need with clothing items sized 4-12. The project builds upon a similar program run at Rocky Point Middle School, which provides families with larger sized items. “Several of us have maintained a small box of offerings for years and felt it was important to create a larger resource for the

greater school community to pull from,” said Dr. Fernandez. The building’s secondgrade service squad helped sort through all of the donations. While the closet was initially filled through a weeklong drive, the school is appreciative of any further donations made throughout the school year.

Carpeting has long been a reliable flooring option to keep rooms looking good and feeling comfortable underfoot. There’s something to be said about having a plush, warm cushion on the floors of a home. Carpeting can help buffer sounds and minimize injuries from falls. Walking around on a padded surface may minimize back and joint pain as well as feel more comfortable when going barefoot. Despite all of the advantages to carpeting, some people continue to avoid it for a variety of reasons, many of which are rooted in myth. The following are a few of the more common myths associated with carpeting.

• Myth: Carpeting contributes to allergens constantly circulating throughout the home. • Fact: Carpeting is actually better at trapping allergens and dust in its fibers than smooth-surface floors. That means that with carpeting there are fewer particles airborne and circulating. Regular vacuuming can remove trapped allergens. • Myth: Carpets pose significant health risks. • Fact: Extensive toxicological assessments of the components of carpet have been studied through the years.

There has been no conclusive evidence that carpets present any health risk, particularly of a carcinogenic nature. • Myth: Carpet is a source of indoor air quality problems. • Fact: Regular cleaning and vacuuming of carpet reduces the number of allergens contained within, which makes carpet no more likely to contribute to air quality issues than any other type of flooring. • Myth: Carpet has formaldehyde in it. • Fact: Formaldehyde was removed from the carpet-manufacturing

process in 1978. It is unlikely anyone still has original carpeting from 35 years ago, and even if that is the case, the formaldehyde would have dissipated by now. • Myth: Carpeting is made from a host of chemical products. • Fact: Carpeting is made largely from nylon, wool, polypropylene and polyester. These are the same materials used in clothing, which spends hours resting up against the skin. Polypropylene is one of the safer plastics that does not contain BPA and is even used in some baby bottles.

True Or False? Carpet Myths • Myth: Mold grows regularly on carpeting. • Fact: Unless you have a flood or a leak that is keeping carpeting saturated, mold will not grow during regular use. Suffolk Jail Tours feeling that jail was not a place they wanted to be,” stated DeMarco. He added, “But what we learned over time by giving these tours is that the parents of these defiant kids really need support. The Correction Officers who run these tours have become a resource for parents who don’t know where else to turn for help.” The personal jail tours are available to Suffolk County residents and their

children over the age of 13. When someone requests a personal jail tour for their teen through the Sheriff’s website, it will initiate a call from a Correction Officer who will often talk with the parent about the problems they are having with their child, and an appointment is made to visit the Riverhead Correctional Facility, in a group setting or individually. Once they arrive at the jail, the youth and their

parents will learn about the day-to-day life inside the correctional facility. After the introduction, the Correction Officer will show them the crowded holding cells and walk through different housing areas. The tour ends in the jail’s chapel area where inmates will talk frankly with the youth about how their own poor decisions led to incarceration. “A lot of the kids and their parents are very emotional

following the jail tour, and it undoubtedly leads many of these teens to reconsider how their behavior is leading them down the wrong path. I would urge parents to consider taking their teens on a jail tour if they are exhibiting very defiant behavior, and to do it before it’s too late.” stated DeMarco. From The Bridge To The Beach Five extraordinary friends will join together for the second consecutive year on Sunday, May 25th for a 125-mile adventure. The journey will take them from the Brooklyn Bridge to Montauk Point on foot to raise funds for Developmental Disabilities Institute (DDI), the leading service provider for children and adults with Autism on Long Island, as well as bring about awareness of Autism and other developmental

disabilities. “Our journey from the Brooklyn Bridge to Montauk was more than just 128 miles,” commented Nathan Holmes. “The experience that we had completing “From the Bridge to the Beach: Walking LI for Autism” changed our lives in the most positive way imaginable. The opportunity to meet the children and teachers at several school programs demonstrated to us first-

hand the incredible value of the services that DDI provides. We were moved by the warm receptions and motivated to keep walking by the electric enthusiasm when we were sent off on our way, especially from the young students.” Nathan Holmes and John Kenny will join with Morgan Zajkowski, Liam Kenny, and Michael Sardone for the seven-day expedition, averaging 17.9 miles per day with stops along the way will include

multiple DDI sites. A map of the route will be available on DDIs website and followers are encouraged to join the walkers on their journey. Funds raised will go towards DDI’s Little Plains School and Children’s Residential Project. This ambitious project not only includes a new home and added classroom capacity at the school for 24 children with Autism, but includes sorely needed renovations to the school building,

which is over 50 years old. New handicap accessibility, an HVAC system upgrade, roof replacement, lighting upgrades and various other improvements to increase the energy-efficiency of the school building will be included in the work. “Before the walk, our visit to the Little Plains site made it obvious how necessary the fundraising effort was in order to renovate the school,” stated John Kenny. “Our ability to raise $22,000 for the walk

last year to contribute to the renovation project was both incredibly humbling and encouraging. It’s an exciting opportunity to try to exceed last year’s fundraising total and make another financial contribution to DDI in support of their mission to help those with developmental disabilities.”

Supervisor Ed Romaine and Councilman Tim Mazzei, Town Board Liaison to the Department of Waste Management, have announced that the 7th Annual Great Brookhaven Clean Up will be held on Saturday, May 17th, at various locations throughout Brookhaven Town. The event, which is co-sponsored by the Town of Brookhaven’s Department of Waste Management and Keep America Beautiful, Inc., drew over 2,400 residents last year. It is part of a national effort that in 2012 drew over 2.3 million volunteers in more than 15,000 communities across America who came together to pick up litter, renew parks, and clean

miles of roadway, rivers, lakes, and seashore. “The Great Brookhaven Clean Up is a great opportunity for people to make a difference in their community,” said Supervisor Romaine, “I urge everyone who cares about our community and the environment to join in and help make Brookhaven a cleaner, greener and more beautiful place to live.” Councilman Tim Mazzei said, “Keeping Brookhaven clean is everyone’s responsibility and there’s no better way to do your part than by joining the Great Brookhaven CleanUp. NEW EAGLE HONORED - Suffolk County Legislator Kara Hahn joined the family and friends of new Eagle Scout Bill Carson during his Court of Honor held on Sunday, March 30th at the Setauket Firehouse. For his community service project, the Troop 427 Eagle raised funds and constructed three bat houses in the wetlands of West Meadow Beach. The 18-foot tall posts are designed to bolster the native bat population of the Setauket area.

Pitch Perfect On March 25th, Port Jefferson Middle School music students were treated to a performance by the Potsdam Pointercounts, an award-winning a capella group from SUNY Potsdam’s Crane School of Music. The group, which has been performing for more than 20 years, sang their way into the hearts and minds of students while encouraging them to continue in their musical

studies. “Stay involved in music programs,” said one Pointercount. “Being involved with the arts is something that will benefit you your whole life.” The Pointercounts, who dedicate themselves to educating students of all ages about a cappella music and bringing the love of the arts into schools, performed a variety of musical styles for

attendees. “A cappella music holds historical and cultural significance,” said another member, “and we strive to make students aware of one of the oldest forms of choral singing. Three of Alan’s photos were chosen for consideration in the Nature’s Best Photography Wilderness Forever Photo Contest, and one of those three photos was chosen as an honorable mention. As an honorable mention winner, Alan’s piece will be on exhibition at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C., opening on September 3rd.

Springing Into Reading Our Lady Queen of the Apostles’ students, faculty, and staff kicked-off the Spring Into Reading Parents As Reading Partners (PARP) program on March 21st with an assembly in school and a book raffle. Students were challenged to read a total of 8,000 minutes per week for three straight weeks. School Principal Mrs. Stueber has issued a ‘Principal’s Challenge’ to participating students,

agreeing to wear a school uniform and eat a chocolate crème pie with her hands behind her back if the students reach their reading goals. The program, which began March 24th requires that participating students maintain reading logs of their activity during the course of the challenge. “Developing a love for reading can be a huge asset in life and we do everything we can here to

make it just one additional part of the fun” said Mrs. Stacie Stueber, principal at OLQA. Other activities celebrated at the assembly included awards for the winners of the “Spring Into Reading” poster contest, a game show-like event called ‘Teacher’s Feud’ hosted by 8th grade teacher and PARP coordinator Mrs. Elizabeth Bricker, and the making of bookmarks by the younger students.

Creating A Brand Ward Melville High School 10th- through 12th-graders enrolled in the school’s Advanced Graphic class had the chance to take part in a real-world exercise when they recently created and presented branding designs to a company. The students began the project by interviewing the client – the Puppet Shakespeare Players from Manhattan – before working to create a logo and a “look” for the company. “Over the years, the graphic design program at

Ward Melville High School has offered students a look into the lives of designers,” said Jennifer Trettner, teacher and chairperson for art and technology. “Students have thought outside the box and solved real-world problems while gaining invaluable experience and creating a strong and competitive portfolio for college. In addition to learning about art, art careers and gaining invaluable real-world experiences, the students also crossed curricula by incorporating

the academic subjects. They learned how to speak publicly and to articulate their thoughts; write about their work; incorporate Common Core vocabulary that can be used across disciplines; research art and world history; build upon their 21st century skills; problem solve; and become confident in their ability to produce highquality work.” The students presented their completed designs to the client and are awaiting a decision on which piece was selected.

Musicals A Hit P.J. Gelinas and R.C. Murphy junior high school’s student-actors dazzled audiences this March with their musical productions of Tarzan and Legally Blonde, respectively. Nearly 500 seventh- through ninthgrade students were involved in the productions after months of rehearsals under the direction of Robert DePersio (Gelinas) and Anthony Pollera (Murphy).

In addition to the audiences that packed the school’s auditoriums during the regular shows, each school showcased this year’s musical during free daytime performances for the district’s sixthgraders and senior citizen community. As this year’s musical marked the 30th anniversary of the theater arts program at P.J. Gelinas Junior High School, a special ceremony was held during the show’s Friday

performance. During the event, Gelinas Principal Marion Gaigal was honored for her instrumental role in starting the program in 1984 and a special slideshow, prepared by art teacher Corinne Keane, covering the 30-year program, was displayed. Ms. Gaigal was also presented with an honorary Oscar from Mr. DePersio and members of the cast.

Reflections Honoree competition. The program, sponsored annually by the PTA, was themed Believe, Dream, Inspire. For her project, Sophia created a ballet dance to the Israel Kamakawiwo’ole medley of Over the Rainbow/What A Wonderful World. The Reflections competition encourages students to unleash their artistic talents, reflect on the theme and create original works of art. Contest submissions are encouraged in five categories: dance choreography, film production, literature, Minnesauke Elementary Award of Merit and third- music composition, School sixth-grader Sophia place honors at the New photography and visual Castellano received an York State Reflections arts.

W.S. Mount Elementary School fifth-graders journeyed more than 70 years into the future to experience a space mission firsthand. During the live e-mission Moon, Mars & Beyond, the students made connections to their classroom math, language arts and science lessons as they helped NASA locate and rescue a lost spaceship that was orbiting one of the outer planets. During the videoconference, which was run with a flight director at mission control from the Challenger Learning Center at Wheeling Jesuit University, the students worked in

planet teams to analyze and compute answers to a variety of mathematical questions. By examining different variables and making predictions, including how much food, oxygen and water would be needed for the mission, the fifth-graders were able to successfully accomplish the rescue. In addition to tying into the school’s math and science curricula, the activity also allowed students to practice their reading skills, think critically and logically, and learn how to communicate effectively with teammates. “This was a fun and exciting way to learn

about some of the topics we were talking about in math and science,” said fifth-grader Emma Fitzsimons. “I learned a lot about the different planets and enjoyed the fun math problems.” Prior to the videoconference, the students researched each of the planets, learning about their distance from the sun, surface materials and other facts, before working in small groups to create posters depicting their findings. Additionally, classroom teachers focused on graphing skills and conducted simulated math problems.

Setauket Elementary School third- through sixth-grade students had the chance to take an upclose look at the field of medicine when members of the Stony Brook University Class of 2015 physicians assistants program visited the building. During

the event, the students attended a variety of handson and informational health literacy workshops. The stations focused on the heart, germs and the brain. Students learned how the heart pumps blood and is a muscle that never stops working through a

fist pumping station; tested their heart rate both before and after a short exercise; learned how neurons allow the brain to function; and the effectiveness of hand washing using “germ goo” and black lights.

Spotlight Lesson P.J. Gelinas Junior High School art teacher Michael Sacco recently had his fifth article published in the internationally read SchoolArts magazine. “The Selfie Project” is a ninth-grade media arts project, which explores the self-portrait and digital
