hree Village Central School District’s Mock Trial Team – comprised of students from Ward Melville High School and P.J. Gelinas – are experiencing a record setting season this year. In just its second year competition, the students advanced to the Suffolk County Quarterfinals after defeating East End rival Mattituck during the first-round of county playoffs. The students have been preparing for the season under Gelinas teacher Douglas Elliot.

Buddy 2.0 By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Time for Buddy: The Sequel. As some of my more loyal readers may recall, I recently adopted my very own Betta fish, Buddy. He’s currently one and a half months old in time-spent-in-myfishbowl years, which has already surpassed the lifespan of most of my previous goldfish, surely a good sign. Like most fishy friends, it seems Buddy’s main mission is to eat. Constantly. Every time he catches a glimpse of me, here he comes, face pressed up against the glass, flippers “wagging”

expectantly. And then there’s the chewing. The adorable motion he makes when consuming his special Betta flakes is nothing short of precious. Who knew fish had teeth! Aside from his daily meal, Buddy seems content to swim endless laps around his prized plant decoration, occasionally knocking it from the gravel in his mad exuberance. Once exhausted, he generally settles under one of the branches for a little floating shut-eye – with eyes wide open of course. That usually only lasts until the instant he spies me, as even the slightest

prospect of food ends any siesta. Sure, he may not be as entertaining as a puppy or kitten or some other furry critter, but Buddy provides his own unique level of amusement from beyond the bowl. I think he’s adjusted quite well to life as a member of my household. Of course, that may be said for anyone who feeds him but… I still say Buddy and I have developed a special bond. Here’s hoping for many more milestones celebrated with my new fishy friend – and many more meals consumed together!

These members of the Port Jefferson school community were among a group of educators, support staff and volunteers from throughout Suffolk County who were honored at the SCOPE Educational Excellence Awards ceremony at Villa Lombardi’s in Holbrook on March 23rd. Mary Poppins

R.C. Murphy Junior High School’s musical theater company performed “Mary Poppins” before packed audiences this March. The hundreds of students in this year’s musical production rehearsed under the leadership of director Anthony Pollera for the past several months to ensure the success of this

year’s show. The cast took attendees on a whimsical journey detailing the lives of two small children and how their lives were positively impacted when Mary Poppins flew – literally – into their home. In addition to the audiences that packed the school’s auditoriums during the regular five

For three nights in March, Mrs. Stephanie Jaklitsch and Mrs. Lisa Saladino, welcomed family, friends and members of the community to the 2015 John F. Kennedy Middle School production of one of Broadway’s most famous musicals, William Steig’s Shrek, Jr.! On Thursday, March 26th local seniors, and cast member grandparents, were invited to dinner in the cafeteria, followed by the dress rehearsal of the show. The JFK Junior National Honor Society was the host of the wonderful dinner. That first performance of SHREK, Jr., was energetic, funny and just so well done. The official showings of SHREK Jr. took place on March 26th and 27th to standing room only crowds of excited patrons. Superintendent Dr. Joseph Rella, and Mrs.Rella, along with numerous

teachers, administrators, and members of the BOE attended the shows. Director and Drama Club Advisor Mrs. Stephanie Jaklitsch, her staff, and talented performers, put on a colorful show that made members of the Comsewogue community proud of this talented cast. Musical Director Mrs. Lisa Saladino and her orchestra displayed their talents by playing upbeat, entertaining music for the cast to sing along to. Led by students Joseph Gordon (as Shrek), Paloma Blatter (as the Donkey), Conor Bifulco (as Lord Farquaad) and Tara Healy (as Fiona), this gifted ensemble of actors, singers and dancers told the story of an Ogre by the name of Shrek, who finds his swamp invaded by fairytale characters. Shrek and his wise-cracking donkey take on the task of rescuing the Princess Fiona to remedy his problem, which leads

to funny situations and romance! Mrs. Jaklitsch and Mrs. Saladino are proud of the students and staff that made Shrek, Jr. such a success. They extended their gratitude to all of the talented students, from cast, crew and scenery helpers. They also expressed their thanks to the faculty and staff, as well as the parents and entire JFK community for their support. With a mixture of humor, drama, singing and dancing, the JFK production of Shrek, Jr. amazed and entertained the audience, which would give the cast a standing ovation at each show’s conclusion! Congratulations to the cast, crew and advisors for putting on a show the entire Comsewogue community can be proud of!

On March 21st, the Court of Honor ceremony for Matthew Epp, Liam Lane, William McCarrick, Seth Mohl, and Sean Scarbrough from Troop 161 in Shoreham was held at Saint John’s RC Church in Wading River. Matthew’s Eagle project was to rebuild a stable in the back of the Wading River Congregational

Church. He removed the old stable, built a new one and renovated the trail and fence. Liam’s Eagle project was to construct a sitting area next to the medical building at Camp-Pa-QuaTok in Moriches. William’s project was to build a fence and plant flowers at Calverton National Cemetery.

Seth’s project was to construct five outdoor cat houses to help the Southold Animal Shelter in Peconic. Sean’s Eagle project was to restore a triptych, clear debris, and adding more plantings in the pavilion area at Our Lady of the Island in Eastport.

Academy LI at Ward Tech students in the Law Enforcement program visited Safety Town at the Town of Brookhaven Wildlife & Ecology Center in Holtsville. It is a replica of a miniature village with an indoor educational facility and an outdoor driving or bicycling course. Led by retired NYPD Highway Patrol Officer Al

Ferrari, students learned about drunken and distracted driving and the dangers they present when behind the wheel. Students experienced the effects by wearing “driving while impaired goggles”, which simulate various levels of intoxication by blood alcohol content (BAC). Students performed (and failed at) a variety

of normal tasks in the classroom, then took to the road to see how they fared on the obstacle course. Law Enforcement Teacher Anthony Biancardi’s said, “Students quickly realized that drunk driving and distracted driving are dangerous and deadly, and are committed to not engage in either of the illegal acts.”

On October 2nd, 2014, Suffolk County launched the bullying awareness website, which can be found at www. suffolkstopbullying.org. Legislator Sarah Anker invites Suffolk County students ages 13-18 to participate in a music video contest, in an effort to help address the concerns of bullying. “According to 2010 Bullying Statistics, 160,000 children miss

school each day for fear of being bullied,” said Legislator Anker, County Chairwoman of Education and Information Technology Committee. “Having been a victim of bullying myself, I understand how important it is to speak up.” By working with Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, Suffolk County’s Information Technology Department, Department of Health, Youth Bureau

and the Suffolk County Police Department, Legislator Anker initiated the creation of a bullying awareness website. The website includes comprehensive bullying awareness resources and information for students, parents, and faculty. As of 2012, New York State requires all public school districts to designate a school staff member as a Dignity Act Coordinator (DAC) to protect students

Music Video Contest from harassment, discrimination and bullying. This website includes a list of each school district’s DAC, which is provided as a resource for students who may encounter bullying. Entry submissions are due on May 1st, 2015. The music video clip must communicate the issue of bullying and illustrate ways that their peers can address this serious issue. We are looking for a short

video clip posted through a YouTube account to be no more than 3 minutes in length. Space Mission Minnesauke Elementary School fifth-graders had the chance to learn about outer space in a handson way through their participation in the live emission “Moon, Mars and Beyond.” The project, which made

connections to the grade level’s math, language arts and science lessons, called for the students to helped NASA locate and rescue a lost spaceship. The students worked in small teams to problem solve and decipher clues provided by

the agency to track the missing aircraft and devise a recuse plan, including calculating how much fuel and food was needed for the effort to be successful.

Three Village Central School District’s Mock Trial Team – comprised of students from Ward Melville High School and P.J. Gelinas – are experiencing a record setting season this year. In just its second year competition, the students advanced to the Suffolk County Quarterfinals after defeating East End rival Mattituck during the firstround of county playoffs. In addition to the organized competitions, the team also hosted

its second home trial competition against Hampton Bays at Jefferson’s Ferry in South Setauket. This event was held as a service to the residents of Jefferson’s Ferry and organized with Alan Costell, coordinator of the Mock Trial Program for the Suffolk County Bar Association. Residents were briefed on the details of the trial prior to the competition in order to heighten interest for the event. Ultimately, the Three Village Team prevailed

as the plaintiff, who was suing the defendant for an alleged act of conversion (theft) of funds raised by a local charity. The students have been preparing for the season under the guidance and direction of Gelinas English Teacher Douglas Elliot.
