During the trip, students toured different cells before engaging in a supervised question-and-answer session with inmates. The speakers spoke about the ramifications their bad choices had on their lives. Thanks to all who made this program a possibility.

Imagine Awards Winners donated space as well as a dedicated COPE House in Eisenhower Park. COPE helps bereaved parents, adult siblings and children heal after devastating losses through professionally-facilitated bereavement support groups; alternative healing therapies (like yoga, Reiki, Tai Chi, meditation, art and music therapy, and writing and spirituality workshops); professional workshops for mental health professionals, schools, clergy and funeral homes; a grief hotline; and Camp Erin® NYC, a bereavement camp for children ages 6-17 dealing with the loss of someone close to them, including concurrent parent camp. Lilly works actively on a daily basis to not only provide support to the COPE families who turn to her for that purpose, but also to guide and spread the word about COPE and its mission and to spearhead fundraising efforts. Lilly continues to be the driving force behind COPE, serving as board president, chief fundraiser and even facilitator of the organization’s art/creative expression workshops. She is also the author of

GriefQuest, a workbook for grieving parents, and speaks at conferences across the country. In 2008, Lillian was inducted into the Long Island Volunteer Hall of Fame under the auspices of the Long Island Volunteer Center, and in 2014, she accepted the Roger E. Joseph prize from Hebrew Union College for her work with Camp Erin NYC. Previous recipients include Victor Kugler, who sheltered Anne Frank’s family, Rosa Parks and Daniel Pearl. “Lilly’s work has a definite social impact,” said Karen Flyer, COPE’s Executive Director. “Families who are able to heal from their profound grief are able to give back to their families, workplaces and society and mentor other families living with loss. the Leadership Excellence Award category for its President and Founder Lillian Julien. The death of a child is the most devastating loss. Yet Lillian Julien rose above the loss of her daughter Michelle in 1996 to found an organization whose purpose is to support other families living in similar circumstances. Shortly after Michelle’s death, Lillian’s daughter came to her in a dream letting her know she was okay but persuading her with the words, “you need to help each other.” Michelle’s message became Lillian’s mission—to create a healing center where parents and siblings could come together for emotional support and a variety of healing modalities. But Lillian didn’t stop with a vision; she turned vision into reality. She first created a spiritual center within her temple, which later became COPE. Recognized as a 501(c)(3) organization in 1999, COPE has grown from a select group of families meeting in each other’s homes to a support network of over 1,000 families gathering and healing in generously

The COPE Foundation, Inc. (“COPE”), a nonprofit grief and healing organization dedicated to helping parents and families living with the loss of a child, was named a Finalist in the Leadership Excellence Award category in The 4th Annual Long Island Imagine Awards. The Long Island Imagine Awards was created to offer formal acknowledgement to some of Long Island’s most effective and innovative nonprofit organizations. A genuine camaraderie among employees, moraleboosting and team building are some of the feelings heard from representatives of several companies who have joined the annual Walk-Run for Friends of Karen at the Long Island Marathon. This year’s events, 5K Walk-Run on Saturday, April 30th, at Mitchel Athletic Complex in Uniondale, NY and 10K, half and full marathons on Sunday, May 1st, at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow, will again be filled with the enthusiasm of hundreds of Friends of Karen supporters – among the thousands of Marathon participants – being able to help families who turn to the tri-state organization for assistance when a child is diagnosed with cancer or another life-threatening illness. Imperial Commercial Cleaning (ICC), headquartered in West Babylon, has had more than thirty employees sign

up to help raise money and awareness for Friends of Karen for the past five years. The American Heart Association, along with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), recommends that adults participate in at least 150 minutes of moderately intense physical activity or 75 minutes of vigorously intense physical activity or a combination of both each week. Members of the Long Island Health Collaborative invite friends, family, community members, and local organizations to join them and the health commissioners for a celebratory walk in the park. Take a walk in Eisenhower Park (East Meadow) on Wednesday, April 6th, National Walking Day, with the Nassau County and Suffolk County Health Commissioners, Dr. Lawrence Eisenstein and Dr. James Tomarken, respectively. They will lead members of the public and the Long Island Health Collaborative (LIHC) on a two-mile walk (rain or shine). The walk begins at the park’s ice rink at 9:30 a.m., where the commissioners will hold a press event on the day marked by the American Heart Association that celebrates walking and all its healthful benefits. The LIHC chose the Eisenhower Park location (Merrick Avenue entrance) because this area has undergone renovation and upgrade to make the sidewalk and paths more walkable and accessible. The improvements are part of the county’s Department of Public Works’ Complete Streets policy – a public policy which the LIHC supports in its efforts to

Last Hope Animal Rescue & Rehabilitation, Inc. today announced it has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the Petco Foundation to support our collaborative effort with several county shelters in Kentucky and Virginia to bring dogs in need (mainly hounds that would be euthanized) to the Last Hope Dog Adoption Center in Wantagh where they will be readily adopted. Last Hope is a nonprofit organization with a mission to save deathdue, abandoned and stray animals. Besides assisting needy dogs in Long Island municipal shelters, Last Hope has developed a partnership with several shelters and transport networks in Kentucky and Virginia, where Last Hope renews hope for discarded dogs that otherwise do not stand a chance. 555 By: Jamie Lynn Ryan 555 columns, 556 with this one. Ten years, soon to be eleven. Such are the minimilestones of my journalistic career here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers. Throw in a dozen or so “In Season” columns from our South Bay’s Seasons™ Magazine, and you have quite the collection of musings on life from me (with the occasional contribution from Buddy the Betta) over the last decade or so of my life. Impressive? Sure, if you enjoy what I have to say. Voluminous? Without a doubt. I have often considered the prospect of sifting through these past essays and compiling some sort of anthology – the highlights, the

lowlights, a snapshot of those topics that seemed worthy of putting pen to paper, or finger to keyboard, as the case may be. Quite the undertaking, and perhaps only for my own self-satisfaction, but a worthy effort nonetheless. Maybe throw in a few photographs to accent the project… weave in a bit of narrative to segue from one chapter to the next… Upon briefly scanning through some of the titles, I see a selection of heartfelt profiles of friends and family members who have left an imprint on my life, a few humorous “rants about nothing” on those dayto-day occurrences that seem to plague us all, a fair share of seasonal and holidaythemed edit, a handful of monumentally exciting

events (I got to interview Don Mattingly??) and… well, a host of columns that can only be categorized as “other,” those musings that delve into the philosophical, my own analysis of life as we know it. A bit uneven? Surely. Representative of my frame of mind at any given moment during the course of the last 10-going-on-11 years? Absolutely. And isn’t that what it’s all about? The opportunity to capture a moment in time, by any means, and transmit it to the public, through any medium, is a priceless one. How lucky I am to have had the chance to do so. 555 times. an eye removed due to glaucoma, and Henry a Redbone Coonhound who lost a leg after being hit by a car. Henry visits a nursing home with his owner as a therapy dog now. Hope has been striving to improve the quality of life for homeless pets, and to provide community outreach services and spay/neuter initiatives for feral cats. Last Hope placed 260 dogs and 575 cats in loving, responsible homes in 2015. This generous Petco Foundation grant will help Last Hope with transport and veterinary costs of adoptable Southern dogs. In rural states, Beagles and other hounds are routinely abandoned, starved or even shot when not deemed worthwhile hunting dogs. With the help of shelters like Last Hope on Long Island, partner shelters like Daviess County in Kentucky have dramatically been able to improve adoptions and lower the number of animals put to sleep. Suffolk County officials announced Thursday, March 24th the names of organizations that have been chosen to receive funds from the proceeds of the first annual Suffolk County Marathon. Nineteen organizations received awards ranging from $2,500 to $23,600 from the nearly $160,000 net proceeds from the September 13th, 2015 race. Recipients were chosen by the Suffolk County Marathon Fund Disbursement Advisory Committee, which assessed the needs of Suffolk County’s veteran population, established criteria for awarding funds to charitable registered 501(c)(3) organizations providing services to local Suffolk County veterans, and established priorities and develop a list of goals and objectives in order to rank applications. “With these awards, we can provide the services that our veterans need when they return home from service,” Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone said. “Through a broad range of services, these organizations take a variety of approaches to help veterans adjust and return to their civilian lives. DENTAL HYGIENE - Miller Place School District’s Andrew Muller Primary School recently welcomed a team of local dental hygienists to lead an interactive workshop for kindergarten and first grade students to teach the right way to clean their teeth. The special guests brought models with them to demonstrate proper brushing and flossing techniques. During the lesson, students also learned how often they should be brushing and flossing and which foods help build strong teeth.

Registration Open Supervisor Ed Romaine reminds Brookhaven residents that registration for the 9th Annual Great Brookhaven Clean Up is now open. The event, which is co-sponsored by the Town of Brookhaven’s Department of Waste Management and Keep America Beautiful, Inc., will be held on Saturday, May 21 at various locations throughout Brookhaven Town. It is part of a national effort that draws over 2.5 million volunteers in more than 15,000 communities

across America who come together to pick up litter and clean miles of roadway, rivers, lakes, and more. Last year, the Great Brookhaven Clean Up drew over 2,600 residents. Free gloves, trash bags and t-shirts will be provided by the Town for the Great Brookhaven Clean Up volunteers. The supplies will be available for pick up at the Department of Waste Management’s third floor office at Town Hall during regular business hours (9:00 am to 4:30

pm) from May 9th to May 20th. Evening pick-ups are scheduled for Tuesday, May 17th and Wednesday, May 18th from 4:30 pm to 8:30 pm. Rocky Point High School’s citizen law class taught by Dorothy Burns took an up-close look at the criminal justice system when they visited the

Riverhead Correctional Facility. During the trip, students toured different cells before engaging in a supervised question and answer

session with inmates. The speakers spoke about the ramifications their bad choices had on their lives.

Baseball Gives Back Rocky Point School District’s baseball program continued their mission to give back to the community by once again volunteering at Maureen’s Haven Homeless Shelter in Cutchogue this spring. The players, which included members of the varsity, junior varsity and middle school baseball teams, joined together with

their coaches to provide breakfast, lunch and dinner for the homeless serviced by the shelter. During their visit, the players spent hours setting up the location. They brought with them hundreds of food, toiletries and clothing items they had collected throughout the year and many homemade treats they

created. Additionally, the teams donated more than 60 gift cards to provide additional meals for the needy. Before completing their service, all of the student volunteers received praised from the shelter’s director for their kindness and generosity.

In yet another partnership with County Executive Steve Bellone and Suffolk County Government, on April 1st 2016, LICADD launched a 24-hour assistance line where a live LICADD clinician can be reached to assist Long Islanders who are in need of services for substance use disorders (SUD). As the public health crisis continues to adversely impact a multitude of Long Island families and communities, LICADD is proud to offer 24 hour assistance to those individuals and families in need of support, counseling and referrals to quality healthcare facilities for a host of treatment options for substance use disorders.

Heroes of the Game Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, Legislator Steve Stern, the Long Island Ducks and New York Community Bank jointly announce the return of the Heroes of the Game program for the second consecutive season, which will publicly honor local veterans and active duty service men and women during all home games this season. More than 125 local veterans and active military personnel were honored during the 2015 season. “Suffolk County is home to nearly 100,000 veterans,

the largest veterans population in New York State. It is our obligation to provide our local heroes with the services they need once they come back home,” said Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone. “The Heroes of the Game program is a wonderful way for thousands of local baseball fans each game to learn about our heroes’ stories and as a way to say thank you to our veterans for the sacrifices they have made to protect our freedom.” “The partnership between Suffolk County

and the Long Island Ducks to honor our veterans is a home run,” Suffolk County Legislator Steve Stern said. “Our veterans are not only the Heroes of the Game, they are our heroes every day and it is an honor for all of us to say thank you in such a meaningful way.” “The Ducks are pleased to be able to continue this terrific program,” said Ducks President/ GM Michael Pfaff. “The feedback we received from fans, veterans, sponsors and the community has been tremendously positive and we’re looking

forward to another great season saluting those we owe so much to.” The Long Island Ducks, along with the support of the QuackerJack Foundation, will honor at least one veteran or active service member at every home game during the 2016 season for their service. Each Hero of the Game will receive 10 complimentary tickets to the game at which they will be honored, so that they may bring their family and friends. “New York Community Bank is grateful to
