Miller Place School District’s Andrew Muller Primary School recently participated in a weeklong literacy celebration, Parents as Reading Partners (PARP), as part of the District’s commitment to promoting a love of reading. This year’s PARP theme was “Parpical,” and every lesson was created with a Dr. Seuss theme in mind. On the first day of the celebration, Principal Laura Gewurz dressed as The Cat in the Hat. Throughout the week, five faculty members from the Andrew Muller Primary

School were SMART Board Mystery readers and read Dr. Seuss books to the students, including “The Cat in the Hat,” “Horton Hears a Who,” “Green Eggs and Ham,” “Yertle the Turtle,” and “The Sneetches.” At the end of the week, students joined musical performer Lee Knight during an assembly to sing original Dr. Seussinspired songs. Students at the Laddie A. Decker Sound Beach School also participated in this event by reading age-appropriate books to Andrew Muller Primary School students over

Skype. The third-to-fifthgrade students shared their passion for reading with kindergarten through second-grade students, and they recommended some of their favorite books when they were younger. North Country Road Middle School students—grades six, seven and eight— visited Andrew Muller Primary School and read to the students as well. The collaboration between schools was part of the District’s mission to inspire students and foster intradistrict collaboration.

Val & Sal Named The Earl L. Vandermeulen High School has announced Chiara Rabeno and Xini Hong as the Class of 2017 valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively. Rabeno and Hong have earned the top spots in their class through their impressive and outstanding commitment to academics. Valedictorian Chiara Rabeno has earned a number of academic accomplishments throughout her high school career. She earned a gold award three years in a row on the National Latin Exam, is an AP Scholar with Honor and received a National

Merit Scholar letter of accommodation. Throughout high school, she has participated in sports, including softball and field hockey where she earned an All-Conference title two years in a row and is a member of the Interact Club, Environmental Club, Science Olympiad and participates in the STEM program. She is also president of the National Honor Society. Rabeno plans to study either biological sciences or biochemistry in college in the fall. Salutatorian Xini Hong has also received a number of academic accolades. She

is a National Merit Finalist, received a gold award for three years in a row on the National Latin Exam, earned the American Chemical Society Award and is an AP Scholar with Distinction. In high school, she has served as co-caption of the Science Olympiad team, and treasurer of the Environmental Club. She also sits as first chair viola in the school’s orchestra and also plays the violin. In college, Hong plans to pursue study in a field related to science.

Rocky Point School District’s music department at Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School has been recognized as a “Suffolk Elementary School of Excellence” by the Suffolk County Music Educators’ Association. This award is given to Suffolk County elementary schools that have robust music programs for the youngest students. In order to receive this honor the school music department must have band, chorus and orchestra performing ensembles (appropriate to grade level), host school concerts, a school musical, have students participate in SCMEA.

THINKING OF BUYING OR SELLING?

bring May flowers, do they not? At least that’s how the old saying goes. Of course, some flowers have already blossomed thanks to the unseasonably warm temperatures scattered throughout March and, as such, have gone back to hibernating for the duration. More irony, indeed. No worries, there are certainly plenty of flowers to be had over the next several months, along with green grass and flourishing trees and… pollen and sap and weeds and mold spores… There’s nothing like the great outdoors. Just be sure to stock up on tissues and allergy pills before you venture out. And maybe an umbrella,

for good measure. Spring is a perfect representation of life as a whole. It’s filled with much anticipation of better days, often precluded by clouds and unseasonable changes in temperature, or moods, if you will. And still, there are those who would just as soon skip right over it into summer, assuming that sunshine and surf and sand equal happiness; when really, the unknown is never guaranteed to be better than the present. And that, dear readers, is the essence of it all. Appreciate today and all the sniffles and sunbursts it may bring; stop and pick a flower, splash in a puddle, enjoy the moment. It’s the only one you’ve got.

NYSSMA Performers More than 250 Port Jefferson School District student-musicians performed at the annual New York State School Music Association Solo and Ensemble Festival at Sachem High School East

on March 24th and 25th. During the festival, each student performed a solo selection and scales for a NYSSMA adjudicator, who assessed them on their performance based on technique, precision and

Measuring Up Minnesauke Elementary School students in the Three Village Central School District are putting their math skills to good use this spring as they take part in an interactive measuring project created by math center teacher Paul Wilgenkamp. Giant wooden rulers have been placed throughout the building and students are using them to learn

their heights in meters, centimeters, inches, feet and yards. To kick start the project, Mr. Wilgenkamp visited each class to speak about the importance of being able to use the customary system and the metric system to measure length. Each Friday, the students who measure a certain height and can answer a fact win a prize “Since most of the rest

of the world uses the metric system, I want students at Minnesauke to be ‘bilingual’ math measurers,” said Mr. Wilgenkamp. “This project will give students the opportunity to interact with and view the rulers in the hallways daily for developing meaningful mathematics connections.”

At the General Legislature Meeting on Tuesday, March 28th, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker honored the Mt. Sinai Girls Basketball Team for winning the Class “A” Suffolk County Championship for the first time in school history. The team, led by Coach Michael Pappalardo and Assistant Coaches John Mees and Tom Walker, won the title in February by defeating the Harborfield Girls Basketball Team with a score of 54-42. “I am so proud to honor the Mt. Sinai Girls Basketball Team for winning the Suffolk

County Championship,” said Legislator Sarah Anker. “The team’s hard work and dedication has made them exemplary role models for their peers and for other teams across Long Island.” “Clearly hard work and dedication pay off,” said Legislator Kara Hahn. “Congratulations to the Mount Sinai Girls Basketball Team for this impressive season. Commitment and practice will always be rewarded, keep it up.” Along with the county championship title, the team won the Suffolk County Small Schools

Championship and was a Section XI New York State Regional Finalist. The team’s league record was 13 wins and 1 loss, and the overall record was 23 wins and 3 losses. Celebrating Victory The Miller Place High School Mock Trial Team recently celebrated its victory over Huntington in the first round of playoffs. To prepare for the first round, students conducted extensive research on legal precedent with the guidance of Miller Place

instructors, as part of the Miller Place School District’s dedication to helping students excel both inside and outside the classroom. Led by club advisor Tom Moran, the team was congratulated for its display of jurisprudence competence at the Suffolk

County Courthouse in Central Islip. Participating students included: Ricky Abreu, Jonathan Beers, Ryan Holownia, Justin O’Connor, Kristen Nappi, Sean Reagan, Lori Beth Sussman, and Kristen Taylor.

Leading the Effort

The Marty Lyons Foundation (MLF), is a non-profit organization that grants wishes to children who have been diagnosed with a terminal or life- threatening illness. Recently, the foundation was among a group of donors who helped make a dream come true for a Selden resident, Andrew Rosa. Together with mother and son Eileen Valenti and Blake Burgan of Sachem and sisters Dawn and Kim Roesch of the Rosech Law firm in East Meadow, sufficient funds were raised to purchase a Quadriciser rehabilitation chair to assist in Andrew’s recovery. Andrew Rosa, now 22 years old, was a collegebound teenager, a junior firefighter, BMX biker and snowboarder. In 2010 he was struck by a car while he was riding his bike. The force of the impact left him in a coma for months while he fought for his life. He sustained a traumatic brain injury and became physically disabled, unable to walk or speak. In 2013 Andrew’s mom,

JoAnn, applied to MLF for a wish for Andrew. While he was immediately approved for a wish, he and his family were not quite sure what would be the most appropriate wish for him. When Andrew’s occupational therapist discussed the great benefits of the Quadriciser with his family, it soon became quite evident that this was his wish. Because this miraculous piece of equipment was way beyond the financial parameters of MLF’s guidelines, others became involved to provide outside fundraising to help Andrew. Through the efforts of MLF Wish Coordinators, Terri Fudens and John Gordon, multiple donors generously contributed to the purchase of the Quadriciser, including a GoFundMe page set up by Eileen and Blake, and a generous donation from the Roesch Law firm. “Andrew’s wish took four years to complete, but it was well worth the effort,” said Terri. The Quadriciser that Andrew received

stimulates the brain and simultaneously encourages muscle memory in the extremities which later results in neurological connections and advancements. The Quadriciser allows Andrew to move his arms and legs in patterns that closely simulate walking and crawling. For the first time in years Andrew’s arms and legs can move simultaneously. “The goal is for Andrew to use the Quadriciser in the home setting on a regular basis to improve his physical capabilities. It is our hope that he will eventually be able to stand and perhaps take a few steps on his own,” said JoAnn. At present, Andrew requires 24/7 nursing care and lots of love and support from his friends and family. He is showing signs of regaining brain function as a result of the intense therapy he receives in his home which is very encouraging. Experiencing History As part of their social studies curriculum, fifthgrade students at W.S. Mount Elementary School in the Three Village Central School District stepped back in time when they participated in an immigration simulation. Leading up to the program, the students researched a family member who had immigrated to the United States. During the simulation, the students

dressed and acted as that individual. Once inside the cafeteria, or “Ellis Island,” they began the process of becoming an immigrant. Parent and staff volunteers were on hand in the school’s mini-gym monitoring the different immigration stations, which checked the immigrants’ background, vocation, character and health, and ultimately cleared them for citizenship.

Once accepted as citizens, the students were asked to review a copy of the federal constitution, were given a commemorative U.S. citizen identification card stamped with their fingerprints, and were asked to recite the Loyalty Oath. At the conclusion of the program, the fifth-graders gathered in the auditorium to recite the Pledge of Allegiance and the Loyalty Oath in unison.

Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco is pleased to announce that the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office welcomed 43 recruits from Class 16-156 to the rank of Correction Officer during a graduation ceremony held at Suffolk Community College in Brentwood on Thursday, March 23rd. DeMarco said, “Corrections is a tough and dangerous career, but it is also very fulfilling

for those who have the compassion necessary for public service, and who serve with integrity, honor, and courage.” Correction Officers must complete a rigorous thirteen week training program at the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office Academy Bureau. During their Academy instruction, all officer candidates must complete intensive training, which includes

classroom and field instruction, firearm safety and handling, defensive tactics, emergency medical training and a rigorous program of physical fitness and testing. Correction Officer recruits are also required to complete a community service class project. Class 16-156 conducted a collection effort for Happy Tails Dog Rescue in Smithtown.

Miller Place High School students in Signor Mancuso’s Freshman Italian class recently celebrated the nearly 1,000-year-old Italian tradition Carnevale and learned more about Italian history and culture. After learning about the colorful costumes and masks worn by Italian

Carnevale participants and performers in the famous form of street theater - ‘commedia dell’arte,’ students decorated their own masks. The masks are currently on display at Miller Place High School. During the Carnevale celebration, students studied Medieval Latin to learn the origin of the

Members of the Manhasset Junior Coalition, the youth arm of the Manhasset Women’s Coalition Against Breast Cancer, recently visited the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Program to present a check for $10,000 to support the Adelphi program’s educational forums. After meeting with staff and breast cancer survivors in Garden City, a Junior Coalition member Charlotte Ryan said, “It was incredible to hear what the volunteers at the Adelphi support center do for women diagnosed with breast cancer. It made me proud to be able to help them in any way that we can.” This was echoed by another volunteer Nicole Pullano who said, “Going

to Adelphi and learning about the program helped us learn how much of a difference we are making and how every little bit helps.” The Junior Coalition of MWCABC was formed in 2003 as a charitable organization for Manhasset teenage girls. Elise Dadourian, Junior Coalition coordinator, says their purpose is to provide education and awareness about breast cancer at a teenage appropriate level without fear, to generate compassion and understanding for those afflicted with the disease and the family and friends affected by it, and to join together to raise funds for breast cancer research and patient support programs. Says Hillary Rutter, the

executive director of the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program, “These young women set an admirable example of community service.” The funds are being used to support educational programs such as “Feel Better and Have More Energy After Breast Cancer” on May 1st and “Using Mindfulness and Meditation to Cope with Breast Cancer” on May 22nd, both held at Adelphi in Garden City. Teachers Federal Credit Union, one of the country’s largest credit unions, recently sent a team of volunteers to prepare brunch for families staying at Ronald McDonald House of Long Island in New Hyde Park. The 15 volunteers from Team TFCU, the credit union’s employee volunteer and community service group, gave of their time and the credit union also made a donation of $1,000. The residents who stay at Ronald McDonald House are primarily family members of hospitalized children who are receiving treatment and care at the Steven and Alexandra Cohen Children’s Medical Center of New York. The hospital is only a short walk from the House. The length of time residents stay at Ronald McDonald House depends on the course of treatment each child is receiving.

Volunteers and staff help to make the residents feel comfortable and supported during their stay at the House. “As we continue our mission of keeping families close in the midst of a medical crisis, we recognize and are so grateful for the support of friends like TFCU. The delicious brunch they prepared for our families and their generous donation make a difficult time much easier for our resident families. While a family is dealing with the pain of having a child in the hospital, knowing they can count on our community makes their journey a little bit easier,” said Matthew Campo, President Ronald McDonald House of Long Island. “Our TFCU volunteers and I had a memorable and gratifying experience at Ronald McDonald House. Before returning to the

hospital to be with their children, Ronald McDonald House residents enjoyed the brunch we made.
