The prestigious football league gives wellaccomplished high school football players from throughout the United States an opportunity to travel around the world to compete against the best U19 football players from other countries. This April, Panico and the AFW team will go to Italy to play against the Italian National 19U Team. with Jamie Lynn Ryan And just like that, spring has arrived, with its bursts of warm sunshine coaxing the flower blossoms from beneath the winter-hardened soil. The Easter Bunny has already come and gone, and plans are well underway for summer vacations and the tantalizing temptation of beach season. Seems we were only just beginning to put together our Christmas shopping lists not so long ago, doesn’t it? It’s funny, how this concept of time seems to work its way into nearly every conversation in one respect or another the lack of it, its tendency to pass by too quickly… seldom have I heard the argument that there is simply too much time to know what to do with. Never, in fact. Seems this would be a rather enviable problem to have. But alas, this is most certainly not the case. As with most of life’s

struggles, it is how we choose to deal with, and hopefully, to overcome these issues that is the most important. Redirecting our focus constantly, from wallowing in the negativity of why did this happen? to being proactive in setting a plan for what would I like to happen? going forward. No use dwelling on the past; we need to be present in order to look to the future with anything resembling a clear perspective. They say hindsight is 20/20; but is it truly? I would argue that, even upon reflecting on past events, I do not have an unequivocal assessment of how things might have turned out differently; or even, if they should have. No, I am a firm believer that all things happen for a reason, even if that reason is not immediately - or ever - apparent. Some things are simply not meant to be

understood beyond a shadow of a doubt. Life is nothing if not filled with unexpected twists and turns, and a touch of the unknown. I recently came across a quote which said, in part, that it is not truly the unknown which we fear; but rather, what we think we know of the unknown. What an interesting concept, this notion that most of our apprehensions are selfmade and, if we would only take care to take a step back and let things play out a bit, perhaps we would be pleasantly surprised as to the outcome. Spring is traditionally seen as a time of growth and progress, naturally and otherwise. The seeds must be planted and cultivated, in hopes of a fruitful season. Whether things blossom as we wish, well, that remains to be seen. As with most things, only time will tell.

Friends of Karen

Friends of Karen is a nonprofit organization that supports critically-ill children and their families. This year, they are celebrating their 40th anniversary; four decades of bringing help, hope and support to over 15,000 children and their families in the tri-state area. I had the pleasure of meeting with some of their staff members to grasp a better understanding of all they have done and all they continue to do for those in need. In 1978, Friends of Karen began with one family, one child, Karen MacInnes; and one inspired woman, Sheila Petersen, who wanted to sustain her close friends through the devastating illness of their daughter. Today, Friends of Karen serves hundreds of families by providing emotional, financial and advocacy support to children with life-threatening illnesses, and to their families in order to help keep them stable, functioning and able to cope, at no cost. To apply for help, a parent or guardian of the ill child must call the organization and speak to a member of their Family Support Team. It is apparent to me that Friends of Karen wants whomever is going through a tough and unimaginable critical illness to know that they are not alone and that help is available for them. Friends of Karen often hosts or participates in many events within their community. On Saturday, May 5th and Sunday, May 6th, they are hosting a team in the Long Island Marathon at

Eisenhower Park in East Meadow. Saturday will be a 5K and Sunday will be a 10K. They are looking for people to join their Friends of Karen team and to cross the finish line knowing they’re making a difference in the lives of many. If you are interested in participating in either or both of these races with colleagues, as a family or individually, you can sign up today! Additionally, if you are interested in volunteering your time preparing for the event - handing out t-shirts, making sure every participant has what he or she needs, etc.; or at the event - taking photos for promotional purposes, you can do so. highlight films. Players need to have been a starter for his high school team on offense, defense or as a specialist, and have a history clear of disciplinary measures. Prior to playing against the Italian team, AFW players will also participate in educational tours of Rome, Vatican City, Tuscany, Siena, Florence, Cinque Terra, Lake Como and Milan. “This was an opportunity that I couldn’t pass up. How many players will ever get the chance to play American football in another country?” said Panico. “I’m most looking forward to bonding with new teammates from all over the country in such a short amount of time, playing for my country, and getting to see what the skill level is of the Italian team.” The Miller Place School District offers a robust athletic program

The Long Island Museum in Stony Brook has selected the finalists’ entries in its annual juried art competition, opening April 20th in Stony Brook. This year’s exhibition is titled Wanderlust and will include 76 works depicting far-away places or traveling. All amateur and professional artists were invited to submit up to three pieces of artwork and a panel of museum staff members selected the 76 finalists out of more than 200 pieces submitted. Debbie Wells, cofounder of Artful Circle will select the winning entries and the winners will be announced at an award ceremony and reception on Friday, April 20th at 5:30 p.m. The reception is free and open to the public. Visitors are welcome to meet and chat with the artists about their work. All finalists’ entries will be on display in the Visitors Center through June 3rd, 2018. Artful Circle, founded by Debbie Wells and Franklin Hill Perrell (former chief curator at the Nassau County Museum of Art) provides visits to art

galleries and museums, art lectures and curatorial services. Their online publication can be viewed at www.artfulobserver. com. Debbie Wells is a graduate of Parsons School of Design with a professional background in graphic design, advertising and publicity. She is an Artist Member of the Salmagundi Club in New York City and has had her photographs entered in many juried exhibitions, including their historic Black & White Exhibition. She serves on several committees, including the Publicity, Programming, Library and Juror Committees. She also lectures at Salmagundi on

topics such as Professional Artist Self-Promotion, Women Artists in the Modern Age and Louis Comfort Tiffany & Stanford White. Debbie’s curatorial accomplishments include exhibitions at Nassau County Museum of Art, Heckscher Museum, Art League of Long Island, Preservation Long Island, Roslyn Landmark Society, Bryant Library and Tria Gallery, Chelsea. Savor these beautiful (and edible) flowers C ultivating beautiful blooms is a popular pastime for gardeners near and far. While gazing at a yard full of vibrant colors or enjoying the aroma of freshly cut blooms is enough for many gardeners, others may want to embrace a long-enduring tradition — growing edible ﬂowers.

Cooking with edible flowers is a trend that has endured for centuries. According to Fleurs Gourmandes, the first recorded history of edible flowers occurred in 140 BC. Use of calendula in salads dates back to the ancient Greeks and Romans. Victorian-era candied flowers and flowerencrusted sweets took edible flowers to new heights. Today, nothing may make a meal seem more gourmet than the inclusion of flower petals in the recipe. Of course, before delving into the expanded world of cooking using edible blooms, some notes of caution should first be mentioned. Avoid flowers that may have been sprayed with fungicides, herbicides or insecticides. To verify safety, only use edible flowers grown specifically for this purpose, not flowers picked from

roadsides or from landscapes. Secondly, remember that not all flowers are edible. Some can be poisonous or cause severe gastrointestinal upset when consumed. That means all flowers should be carefully researched prior to experimenting with them in the kitchen. To begin growing — and eating — edible flowers, refer to this list of varieties deemed safe and be careful to double-check against allergies and any interactions with medications prior to use. Allium: These are blossoms from the allium family, which include garlic, chives and leeks. These flowers can be used to add flavor to foods.

marigold family can taste like saffron when it’s sautéed. Uncooked, calendula can have spicy notes that add variety to salads and garnishes.

Marigolds: These tiny ﬂowers may be used in vegetable gardens to repel animal and insect pests. Blossoms have a fresh citrus taste that can be used in cooking.

Chamomile: This plant features small, daisy-type ﬂowers that can be used in treats and teas. Cilantro: The ﬂowers from the cilantro plant can be eaten, just as the leaves and the seeds that form the spice coriander.

Basil Blossoms: It may be customary to pinch off the blossoms of basil, which come in colors from white to lavender in order to stimulate growth of the leaves of the plant. However, the blossoms, which are more mild than the leaves, can be tasty as well.

Fennel: Just like the plant itself, the ﬂowers of fennel have a subtle licorice ﬂavor.

Personal touches turn a house into a home. Hanging pictures, whether they’re personal photographs or artwork, can really change the character of a room. Unfortunately, some people may not know the proper ways to display pictures on a wall. Design maven Martha Stewart advises that the ﬁrst step is to gather all of the pictures that are in consideration for hanging. This will enable a person to see what is available and edit their selection based on the space available, theme or color scheme. Having the artwork there enables a person to move it around like a puzzle until the placement feels just right. Next, plan on hanging artwork at 57 inches on center, according to the renovation experts at Apartment Therapy. “On center” means the middle of the photograph or painting will always be at 57,” as this measurement represents the average human eye height. This height is regularly used as a standard in many galleries and museums.

When the goal is to hang multiple pictures, treat the entire grouping as

a single unit. This means creating the layout and ﬁnding the center of the middle piece of the grouping. To make picture grouping easier, use paper templates with arrows to indicate whether the artwork will be hung horizontally or vertically. These templates can then be easily taped to the wall and rearranged until the grouping is ideal. There are no hard and fast rules concerning frames, meaning they do not all have to match. But placing framed artwork side by side can give a person a feel for whether the images and the frames work together in the space. Some people like to use frames of similar colors and sizes. Others want the eclectic mix-and-match appeal. It’s ultimately up to the homeowner. Measuring is key to hanging a picture correctly on the wall. Take into consideration the type of attachment, whether it’s D-rings, sawtooth hangers, wire or other fasteners on the back. Measure from the top of the frame to the hanger. Measure the wall to achieve

Then measure the distance from the frame top to the hanger location on the wall. Be sure to take the weight of the picture into consideration when selecting hanging hardware. Home improvement resource Today’s Homeowner also suggests using self-adhesive rubber bumpers to the bottom corners on the back of the frame before hanging so that the picture will not damage the wall and will help it hang level. It can take a few attempts to hang pictures correctly, but with practice it should come with greater ease. The good news is there are new products constantly being evolved to make picture hanging easier, including those that enable removal and relocation of artwork without damaging walls.

Scouts Honored On March 24th, Councilwoman Jane Bonner attended the Court of Honor ceremony for Peter Martin and Thomas Barry, Jr. from Boy Scout Troop 204 in Miller Place. Thomas, from Miller Place, completed his Eagle Scout project at the Mount Sinai Nature Center at Cedar Beach, where he built a wooden structure to provide shade over an outdoor touch tank used to

house local sea life. Peter, from Rocky Point, repaired and refurbished two Miller Place welcome signs. He paid for the project by hosting a fundraiser at Port Jeff Bowl. “Eagle Scouts are the leaders of tomorrow, and from what I can tell about these outstanding young men, our future will be in good hands,” said Councilwoman Bonner. “The work that they do sets

a great example for their peers to follow and I thank them for their service to our community.” To become an Eagle Scout, the highest rank in the Boy Scouts of America, a scout must earn a minimum of 21 merit badges, demonstrate leadership, and perform an approved community service project.

Learning from the Experts As an extension of their classroom lessons, 90 members of the P.J. Gelinas Junior High School chorus, band and orchestra embarked on a journey to New York City to attend a Broadway master class with Joel Hatch, the lead performer in “Come From Away,” and Jeff Theiss,

assistant musical director for the current Broadway production of “The Band Visit.” During the workshop, the students were fully engaged in a question and answer session with two prominent members of the Broadway community. Many aspects

Rocky Point High School senior Kyle Markland has amassed a number of accolades in the field of science research during his academic journey in the Rocky Point School District and this winter he added three more titles to his already impressive resume. Kyle was named a winner at the regional level of the Junior Science and Humanities Symposium, one of 14 winners of the New York State Science and Engineering Fair as well as received the Intel Award for Excellence in Computer Science at the Long Island Science and Engineering Fair. As a regional level winner, Kyle will advance to the

national competition in Hunt Valley, Maryland from May 2nd-May 5th and, as a state winner, will now advance to the International Science and Engineering Fair, held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in late May. Along with receiving the Intel Award, Kyle was presented with a $200 scholarship. Kyle’s project, “A Novel Kalman Filter Latent State Estimator for GPS/ INS Reference Point Acquisition,” was to design and test software to improve the accuracy of GPS units, like those used in cars. Kyle wrote a software program that was designed to help factor out uncertain measurements using a Kalman filter

(software built into the program). He focused primarily on getting a more accurate initial reference point for the GPS. He tested the program using a robotic system that he designed and built, and found that he could obtain a more accurate initial reference point using the Kalman filter. “Obtaining accurate, real-time position information is essential to realizing autonomous vehicle technology in everyday life,” said Kyle. “GPS currently does not meet the accuracy needs of autonomous vehicles, as its accuracy diminishes in urban environments. An inertial navigation system (INS) can provide more accurate position than GPS and is not adversely affected by environmental conditions. The objective of this engineering project was to create a software program that incorporated a Kalman filter that processed GPS measurements to create an accurate GPS reference point for an INS.” Photo courtesy of: Rocky Point School District

In total, 552 participants registered to participate in one of the nine dips. “As incredible as it is to think that 552 people were able to raise more than $217,000, the fundraising component is just part of the goal of these events,” said Michael Katz, Executive Director at Camp Sunshine. “Equally as important is the awareness we bring to each area where we host these events. Our goal has always been to reach out to even more families who can utilize our services. The polar dips provide a great platform to help spread the word.”

The funds enable children with lifethreatening illnesses and their families to enjoy the award-winning Camp Sunshine on Sebago Lake in Maine free-ofcharge. At Camp, they join other families on similar journeys and experience the benefits of empathy and encouragement, recovery and recreation, and hope and inspiration. In all, 23 illness-specific sessions will be hosted at Camp Sunshine in 2018.
