That is something to be extraordinarily proud of. Look to the people you are working with each day to do special things and say to them “We are a team and we are together on this”! “You are the heroes of healthcare”! Our health care workers are on the front lines of this pandemic, and the American Heart Association (AHA) is working with them to implement training aids and resources they anticipate needing. For example: in response to an anticipated possible future shortage of trained ICU personnel utilizing
ventilators, the AHA will soon be launching a new course for Oxygenation & Ventilation of the COVID-19 patient (which will be available to health care providers worldwide by March 31). The Choice For Staying Put Or Moving On Many home improvement television series showcase people deciding whether to improve upon their current homes to make them into the houses of their dreams or to put “for sale” signs in their lawns and move on to something new. The question of whether to move or stay put depends on various factors. Such factors may include emotional attachment to a home, the current economic climate and the cost of real estate. Current data points to a greater propensity for people to invest and improve upon their current properties rather than trading up for something new. According to information collected by John Burns Real Estate Consulting, the percentage of homeowners moving up to their next home is the lowest in 25 years. Many are opting to make starter homes
permanent by expanding them and repairing homes for the long haul. The National Association of Realtors said that, between 1987 and 2008, home buyers stayed in their homes an average of six
years before selling. Since then, however, NAR says the average expected length of time people will stay in their homes before selling is now 15 years. Part of what’s fueling this permanency is that many home buyers were able to acquire rock-bottom mortgage interest rates shortly after the 2008
recession. As a result, they’re not inclined to walk away from those rates, even if doing so means getting more house. Also, a low inventory of available houses has stymied repeat buying for many people. Those factors and others have led many homeowners to invest in renovations instead. The experts at Bankrate say realistic budgeting and comparing renovation project costs against mortgages and interests rates can further help individuals decide whether to remain in their current homes or move out. Very often a smarter layout and more efficient floor plan can make meaningful differences in spaces. Renovations and redesigns can make sense and often are less expensive and disruptive than moving.

High Technology and Strong Faith Working Together
The highly unusual circumstances of the COVID-19 outbreak, and subsequent shutting down of much of society, has helped to identify the things that really matter in our lives. The unique circumstances have tested our abilities to leverage the wealth of technologies that Catholic Elementary Schools have invested in, and tested the partnership between parents and educators. The families and students in our school communities have found comfort from the close relationship each has with their faith, and with each other, in the uncertainty introduced by the global pandemic. Academically, each student in a Catholic school was already a user of the Google apps for education (the Google G-Suite) and each student has a Google account that they can access from any
device, anywhere they can access the Internet. In the days leading up to the closing of the schools, the schools made sure that every student had access to a suitable device to continue their learning remotely, and loaned devices to students who needed them. Faculty responded quickly, with teachers ‘translating’ lesson plans to make them engaging and effective when presented online. Pastors and Principals orchestrated the activities and began each new day with morning announcements, a morning prayer, and the pledge of allegiance. School days continued, uninterrupted, right down to the acknowledgement of students celebrating birthdays. The tight communities around our schools worked together to maintain a sense of normalcy for the students.
As the schools and students enter week 2, with the technical and educational challenges under control, students are completing and sharing projects online, they are seeing and interacting with their classmates in online forums. Students are attending Liturgies and prayer services online, and their schools have even begun to bring their art and music classes to them via Skype, Zoom and Google. The things that have always made Catholic school special all remain intact – and the warmth, love and support of these beautiful faith communities has never been more important. Promoting A Culture Of Inclusion Three Earl L. Vandermeulen High School students shared ideas of how to increase spectators at the district’s unified basketball games at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association and Special Olympics Youth Activation Committee Summit recently held at Connetquot High School. Students Adam Friedman, Aarya Patel and Chris Sciotto represented the team in a brainstorming
session including promoting the games on the school’s Morning Show program and creating unified basketball team socks and T-shirts to use as giveaways during home games. The team will also hosted a pizza party for their opponents after each home game to help build relationships between the student-athletes on both teams to support the idea of inclusiveness. “We are so proud of our students for helping
to continue this culture of inclusion throughout our school community,” said Port Jefferson School District Director of Health, Physical Education and Athletics Adam Sherrard. The sport, which is recognizing its second year at Port Jefferson, last year brought the team to a league championship and third place finish at the Section XI Championship Tournament.

Stony Brook University Hospital Accepting i-Pad Donations for Telehealth Distancing Measures Members of the community have been reaching out and asking how they can help the healthcare professionals and those afflicted with COVID-19 pandemic. One very important way: we need an influx of iPads to keep our inpatients connected to their providers and their
families. Anyone who has an iPad that is not being used, please consider donating to Stony Brook University Hospital. We will repurpose the donated device to provide telecommunication for our patients to connect with our medical staff.
We are looking for about one hundred devices of a supported iPad model. Before donation, the device should be cleaned, reset (click here for instructions), and placed in a zip lock bag if possible with a viable power chord. It takes a team effort to convert these devices into a
secure patient friendly solution. We will do our best to make your gift count and give someone comfort during these remarkable times. The donations of medical supplies and comfort care items such as gum, lip balm, tissues and snacks have been pouring in

Being deployed to Afghanistan can be dangerous and stressful for our service members. Some of these service members rescue stray dogs and befriend them. When it’s time to head back to the United States, the last thing they can think of is leaving the dog behind to fend for itself. One soldier, Sgt. Dominick, is desperate to bring his dog, Jonsey, back home with him. “After these dogs are rescued, they develop a special bond with our service members. These dogs will not leave their side and become very attached and loyal,” explains Dori Scofield co-founder of Paws of War. “There’s no way they can leave them, so we do everything we can to help them bring the dog home with them. We need all the support we can get from the public in order to be successful with these efforts.” Army Sgt. Dominick, who is stationed in a remote area
of Afghanistan, first spotted Jonsey when the starving puppy was eating burnt trash outside of his camp. He took the puppy in, fed him, and the whole unit fell in love with him, which brought them joy. He named him Jonsey, and the dog grew to feel like a part of his family. Now that he will be heading back to the United States, he can’t bear to leave him behind. Stray dogs in Afghanistan have a very rough life and often times are subjected to cruelty. Desperate to bring him back home with him to live out his life and be a part of his larger family, he turned to Paws of War for assistance. The organization has a program in place that helps service members bring their dog home after being deployed to the Middle East. While they are always quick to help do what they can, they can’t do it alone. In order for Paws of War to be successful at bringing
a dog back to America from Afghanistan, they work with Nowzad, the only official animal shelter in Afghanistan, and get financial support from public donations. Rocky Point High School students Sarah Pitgano, a junior, and Michael Sabella, a senior, had a collective vision that led to them to create a beautiful exhibit in one of the school’s hallways. A glass display case has several colorful prom dresses for any student who may like
to have one to celebrate the right of passage for all seniors. The two artistic students, both looking to study the arts in the future, created the display on their lunch period, along with the guidance of office assistant Jean Poveromo, who has been spearheading the
project for more than five years. “Michael and Sarah were so excited to be able to do the window display,” Poveromo said. “It was a great way to involve them in the school aside from the academic aspect.”

Port Jefferson School District Raises Funds For Dezystrong Foundation The Port Jefferson School District recently hosted PJ Madness, a basketball tournament for students and teachers, organized by Earl L. Vandermeulen High School science teacher Mr. Charles Hafner. Along with friendly competition, a message of strength and inspiration grew from the event that raised thousands of dollars for an organization devoted to helping people living with cancer. Mr. Hafner shared the story of Mr. Matthew
DiStefano, a Suffolk County teacher who recently succumbed to kidney cancer and whose spirit and message of “We Get To” was shared throughout the district. Port Jefferson Middle School teachers Mrs. Deirdre Filippi and Mrs. Jeannette Garofola took the message to their colleagues and students, and proceeds from the tournament, T-shirts and other donations totaling $5,368 was donated to his namesake organization, the DezyStrong Foundation.
The nonprofit helps support and encourage those living with a lifethreatening disease. “It is heartwarming when a school community comes together to support an initiative of this caliber,” Port Jefferson Superintendent of Schools Mrs. Jessica Schmettan said. “It not only shows the character of our staff and students, it reinforces Mr. DiStefano’s message RAISING FUNDS FOR DEZYSTRONG FOUNDATION - Port Jefferson Middle of living each day to the School students stood in unity in their DezyStrong T-shirts.
