we have been hosting pet shows for 25 years, this 6th show at Suffolk Community College in Brentwood was a great show for us. However overwhelming a situation, to have the presence of mind to narrow one’s focus to the task at hand requires great strength. It is a truly admirable feat to be able to maintain such a mentality day in and day out, despite all those forces conspiring against us.

HOPELESSLY DEVOTED - Students at Miller Place School District’s Miller Place High School recently performed their own rendition of the popular 1970’s play and movie Grease. Students began rehearsing in November for the musical, which successfully sold out 3 of its 4 shows. On March 14th, Councilwoman Valerie M. Cartright, joined Supervisor Edward Romaine, Legislator Kara Hahn and Assemblyman Steven Englebright at the Boy Scouts Troop 354 Eagle Court of Honor ceremony held at the Port Jefferson Elks Lodge #2138. Three of the Scouts

completed projects at the Port Jefferson Station Save-A-Pet Animal Rescue and Adoption Center. Benjamin J. Granger built a mahogany picnic table encircling a tree in front of the center, Andrew J. McHugh built an outdoor exercise area for cats waiting to be adopted, and Kyle W. Schauss built

winter housing and a feeding station for feral cats that are cared for by Save-A-Pet. Scout Harrison R. Granger completed a project at First United Methodist Church in which he replaced the light fixtures and painted walls in the meeting hall. All of the Scouts reside in Port Jefferson Station.

On March 22nd, Supervisor Ed Romaine attended along with Scoutmaster Bob Pearsall the Court of Honor ceremony for Daniel and Christian Roder from Boy Scout Troop 354 in Port Jefferson. At the event, which was held at Montfort Hall Parish Center at the Infant Jesus RC Church, the Supervisor presented proclamations in recognition of both achieving the rank of Eagle Scout. Daniel’s Eagle Scout project involved

constructing a lit sign surrounded by a brick enclosed garden on the front lawn of the Infant Jesus Roman Catholic Church in Port Jefferson. Christian’s project was to build benches and rain/sun shelters over the baseball field dugouts at the Church of Saint Gerard Majella ball fields in Port Jefferson. Supervisor Romaine said, “Congratulations to Daniel and Christian for completing their service projects and achieving the rank of Eagle Scout. These

exceptional young men are a credit to the community and we will look to them to be our leaders of tomorrow.” Since the award was presented in 1912, no more than four percent of all Scouts have attained the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest rank attainable in the Boy Scouts of America (BSA). Research Reward As a result of their cutting edge research projects, several Rocky Point School District students earned top honors at this year’s Long Island Science and Engineering Fair – the most prestigious competition on Long Island. After earning a bid to compete in Round 2 of the high school division, Rocky Point High School ninth-grader and science research student Kyle Markland earned third place in the contest for this project “The Effect Of Shielding On Cosmic Ray Interference.” His project tested to see which material is most effective

for shielding a hypothetical space traveler against cosmic rays; a study that concluded that aluminum foil is significantly better at blocking cosmic rays than any other material. Rocky Point Middle School eighth-graders Amber Carangello, Charlotte Courbois, Grace Fade, Hunter Hess, Paul Leheste, Bryant Liu, Briana O’Conner and Joshua Vogel competed well in the middle school division, surpassing many of the contests 177 participants. Projects completed by Paul (“Shock Avoidance Conditioning and ExtraCranial Memory Storage in the Flatworm Schmidtea

mediterranea”) and Bryant (“The Effects Of Pretreatment On The Release Of Simple Sugars From Plant Fallen Leaves”) each earned first place; Joshua, Hunter and Amber’s entry “Photochemistry” placed second; and Briana, Charlotte and Grace were given an honorable mention for their project (“It’s Written All Over Your Face: The Science Of Facial Expressions”). principals dating back to Confucius. While drawing their Chinese pandas on rice paper with Sumi-ink, the sixth and eighth grade art students were taught a

number of civic virtues and about endangered species, including the panda bear. They also gained an increased awareness of self.

Celebrating Heritages Rocky Point Middle School students marked this year’s San Giuseppe festival through a series of cultural learning activities. With the help of Italian teacher and program coordinator Angela Rabeno, the students learned about the history of the festival through guest

speakers, had the chance to participate in interactive learning activities and sample traditional foods. They learned about the significance of red carnations, fava beans and the importance Italians put on family. Leading up to the event, the students created posters and artifacts about

the Italian culture, which were on display during the festival. The Rocky Point School District extends a special thank you to the Uncle Giuseppe’s Marketplace for donating the foods for the program.

New Holiday Following a library lesson on holidays and cultures from around the world, Edna Louise Spear Elementary School thirdgraders were inspired to create their own new holidays. The students drew

inspiration from the book, Palapalooza by Daphne Skinner, which tells the story of five friends who set out to create the perfect holiday, and from their library teacher Selinda Moore, who taught the students about family

traditions using a Power Point presentation. Among the holidays the students created were Italian Day, National Pasta Day, Harry Potter Day, Family Get Together Day and Puppy Day.

Local Scouts Honored

On March 21st, Councilwoman Jane Bonner attended the Court of Honor ceremony for Anthony Mammina, Kyle Thompson and Nathaniel Gass, from Boy Scout Troop 204 in Miller Place. The event was held at Miller Place High School. Anthony’s Eagle Project consisted of making recycling bins for the recycling program at Riverhead High School. The bins have helped the school earn money and helped the environment. Kyle constructed a bobwhite quail brooding

cage for the Mount Sinai Elementary School. The project was part of a restoration effort to grow Long Island’s bobwhite quail population. Nathaniel’s project was the revitalization of the Miller Place-Mount Sinai Historical Society’s corn crib which was built prior to the 1870’s. His work improved the structure aesthetically and preserved it for the future. Councilwoman Bonner said, “Congratulations to Anthony, Kyle and Nathaniel for completing their projects and

Star Students Six Port Jefferson elementary students have been named Star Students in the American Library Association’s yearlong Read Campaign. The Edna Louise Spear Elementary School

ALS Lesson Elementary students in Port Jefferson spent the morning of March 20th learning about ALS, commonly referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease, as they welcomed Chris Pendergast, of Miller Place, who has been battling the disease for more than 20

years. During the assembly, Pendergast educated the Edna Louise Spear students about ALS, discussed his Ride for Life campaign, a 12-day journey across Long Island that raises awareness and funds for the disease, and

informed the students on current research being done to find a cure. “Students were very attentive during the presentation. You could hear a pin drop,” said Principal Thomas Meehan.
