T h e Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations. Since the organization’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued. Did you know that senior citizens are the fastest growing population in the world? The number of Americans 65 and older is projected to more than double to over 98 million by 2060. To date, the Twilight Wish Foundation has granted over 3,700 wishes throughout our country! These wishes have ranged from simple needs wishes, such as shaving razors for nursing home veterans, to living life to the fullest wishes, such as going cross country in a tractor trailer truck. Recently, many Long Island residents had their wishes come true. Below is a story about Michael, a Plainview resident. Michael wished for a record player and vinyl records. The Twilight Wish Foundation happily granted his wish, and as far as the records go, he received two of his favorites! Michael had worked in insurance and took an early train into the city every morning, returning home late at night. By the time he retired, he was ready for senior living accommodations. However, retirement did not stop his desire to volunteer. Prepandemic he worked closely to help people who were lower functioning/ had dementia. During the pandemic,
he was still the first person to ask others what they needed and if he could be of help in any way. He truly gives so much without thinking of taking. Thank you for being you, Michael! You can qualify for a Twilight Wish if you are at least 65 years old, are a legal U.S. citizen, demonstrate financial need, provide a history of giving back to others and possess the cognitive, emotional and physical ability to experience the wish. Please note, when going to grant a wish, this foundation takes all the necessary safety precautions. If you are interested in volunteering with their Long Island Chapter, you can fill out the Chapter Volunteer Application at www.twilightwish.org/volunteeropportunities/ and someone will get in contact with you regarding how you can do so. The Long Island chapter operates under the direction of James Ciervo. Lastly, if you would like to donate to this organization, please visit their website. The Three Village Historical Society lecture series hosts prominent and emerging historians, authors, genealogists, archeologists and storytellers from around the nation and presents topics related to local history, heritage conservation, social justice, art history, and more. For decades, TVHS public programming has provided a stimulating environment for the exploration of history and ideas that permeate the culture and community of the Three Village area, and beyond. In early 2020, when the world went on “lockdown”, TVHS shifted gears and began hosting this treasured event virtually via Zoom on a monthly basis and the Society will continue to do so for 2021. Thanks to Governor Cuomo’s leadership and support, State Parks is excited to host the return of the Air Show. Have Your Furry Friends Tested Annually The American Heartworm Society advises dog owners to have their furry companions tested for heartworm annually. Such tests can typically be conducted during routine preventive care visits to the veterinarian. The
AHS notes that such tests are necessary even for dogs that are taking year-round heartworm prevention medications. Tests can confirm that such programs are working or indicate if they are not effective. The American Veterinary
Medical Association notes that antigen tests are the most commonly performed tests. These tests detect the presence of adult female heartworms and they are typically highly accurate. If a test is positive, veterinarians may recommend
further testing, including radiographs, a blood profile and an echocardiogram. Such tests can determine a number of things about the infection, including its severity. The AVMA also notes that the additional testing can help determine the best
course of treatment. Cat owners should know that it’s more difficult to detect heartworm in cats than in dogs. The AHS indicates that cats are much less likely than dogs to have adult heartworms, making the disease harder to detect in
felines. Veterinarians may recommend cats receive both the antigen test and an antibody test, which detects exposure to heartworm larvae. The AVMA notes that more testing may increase the likelihood of detecting the disease in cats.

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo recently announced the Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach State Park will return this Memorial Day weekend after a one-year absence. The outdoor show, sponsored by Bethpage Federal Credit Union, features a range of military and civilian aerial performers. This year’s show will be a ticketed event, with reduced capacity and social distancing measures in place to ensure a safe return of the patriotic Long Island beachfront tradition. “As we continue to see progress in our fight against COVID and cautiously reopen our state, we can look forward to enjoying more and more outdoor adventures this summer - including the annual Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach State Park,” Governor Cuomo said. “With safety measures in place, New Yorkers and visitors can get back to enjoying all that Jones Beach and Long Island State Parks have to offer, and this annual festival is a great way to get outdoors and support the regional Long Island economy.” The Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach, one of the most popular events on Long Island, was canceled last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Its return this year brings back a Memorial Day weekend tradition that celebrates the beginning of summer at Long Island’s beaches, and honors military families and those who serve our country. This year’s show features the United States Air Force Thunderbirds, the United States Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt (Warthog), United States Army Golden Knights U.S. Army parachute team, and United States Coast Guard Search and Rescue team, as well as many other worldclass civilian performers. The Bethpage Air Show will take place Friday, May 28, (Practice show); Saturday, May 29, and Sunday, May 30, 2021 from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. each day. In the 1640s, the Halsey family began farming in the Water Mill and Bridgehampton area. Today, their family farm tradition continues as Milk Pail Fresh Market & U-Pick, which is run by both Amy and Jennifer Halsey. Both Amy and Jennifer received agricultural educations and returned to the farm after college. Amy manages the retail store, helps design gardens, custom designs planters and more. Jenn is on the farm growing the crops. She once had even been named New York Young Farmer of the Year by the New York State Farm Bureau and proudly represented her state at the national finals held in Texas. At their farm they grow apples, peaches, pumpkins, blueberries, pears and table grapes. Many value-added products are made from their produce, including fresh apple cider, apple cider donuts, apple and pumpkin pies and more. With the help of their dedicated staff, this family farm continues many traditions, while also trying new ideas to grow the business! Running a farm is no easy task, but Amy and Jennifer make it seem so! Visit their farm for a great experience on the East End.

Lisa Gatti is the Founder and CEO of Pal-O-Mine Equestrian and the mother of her 13 year old daughter, who is the pride and joy of her life. She has supplemented her education throughout the years by taking other educational programs. In 1996 and 2000, Lisa was named as US Team Leader for the US Equestrian Paralympic Team in Atlanta, Georgia and Sydney, Australia. From 2008-2013 Lisa served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of EAGALA, the global standard for equine assisted psychotherapy and personal development. In 2015, Lisa was named to the Board of Autism Communities. Most recently in 2019, she was appointed to the Town of Islip Disability Advisory Committee to help local government identify the most crucial issues facing our special needs population. She was honored with the 2020 Woman of Distinction and Distinguished Service Award from The Town of Islip, is a current finalist for the Imagine Awards for the Leadership Excellence Category and just received the 2021 Circle Of Excellence Award from the Long Island Business News. Throughout the pandemic, she still sees the greatness around her everyday and believes that when we see it in others, we know it, and when we trust its presence in ourselves, we embody it.

Rocky Point High School senior Jenika Cuocco was honored for her academic achievements by the Town of Brookhaven’s Black History Commission. The theme of the 30th annual Black History Celebration, held virtually this year, was “The Black Family: Representation,
Identity and Diversity.” Suffolk County Sheriff Dr. Errol Toulon was the keynote speaker, and Jenika and other Brookhaven Town high school seniors celebrated their rich history, culture, family and achievements. “She is a wonderful young lady who excels
in the classroom and in the athletic area, playing field hockey and lacrosse for our varsity teams,” Principal Jonathan Hart said of Jenika, who will join the women’s lacrosse team at Drexel University in the fall.
Stony Brook School Student Seeks Unity
Bobby Reuter, a junior at The Stony Brook School, has made a hobby of handcrafting wooden American flags in his free time. Recently, he committed to an ambitious plan of his own accord: to write every member of congress and offer them one of his creations as a symbol of American unity. “I truly believe that the
American flag is a powerful symbol,” said Bobby. “It represents unity, justice, equality, and all the American ideals that this country was founded on. Although this past year has been very politically dividing, my hope is that, regardless of which party they’re a part of, members of congress will accept this gift, reminding them of the
unity of our country. “ Bobby will begin with writing to the local members of congress, and expand to a national scale. He believes that the freedom we were born into can often be taken for granted, and he hopes that his gesture will remind the recipients of America’s precious gift of freedom.

8 Tips For Dyeing Easter Eggs Coloring eggs is a beloved Easter tradition. Eggs long have been symbols of fertility and rebirth, making them fitting icons for spring. One story links eggs to
Easter as well. According to some religious scholars, Mary Magdalene, the woman who was the first person to see Jesus Christ after His resurrection, was holding a plain egg in her
hand while waiting for the emperor to share the good news. The emperor then told her that Jesus’ resurrection was as improbable as that egg suddenly blushing. The
egg then turned red. Dyeing eggs is an entertaining activity, but one that also may have some religious significance. Many families will color eggs this Easter, and these guidelines can make the process go smoothly. • Wait until just before coloring to hard-boil eggs. Good Housekeeping recommends boiling eggs for 11 minutes for a hard boil. Do not chill the eggs afterward; warm eggs absorb color more effectively for more vivid results. • Egg dye can stain furniture, clothing or tablecloths. Therefore, dress in clothing that you’re not worried about staining. Also, cover work surfaces with an old tablecloth and newspapers to soak up any spills. • Make a drying rack to ensure that eggs will dry evenly.
