school. In part, the proclamation reads, “Honoring Rocky Point High School students for the successful creation of a prosthetic hand for Anan Suastika.” Anan is the little boy whose life was changed forever by the receipt of the kindhearted project.

Students Honored For Technology Project

Rocky Point High School technology students were honored at a recent Town of Brookhaven board meeting and were presented with a proclamation from Councilwoman Jane Bonner. The students were lauded for their creation of a prosthetic hand that was donated to a 6-year-old Indonesian boy who was born with no fingers on his right hand.

Along with technology teacher John Schumacher, students Thomas Anzalone, Brendon Artzt, Jacob Bazata, Gavin Donovan, Gianna Imeidopf and James Prendergast were lauded by Councilwoman Bonner, who thanked them for taking on a challenge to improve the young boy’s quality of life. “We are grateful to Mr. Schumacher and

these students for this project that will have a profound effect on a boy’s life,” Rocky Point School District Superintendent of Schools Dr. Scott O’Brien said. “The enthusiasm and passion shown by this committed group is inspiring to others in our school district, learning that in our classrooms they too can make a difference in the global community.”

Pal-O-Mine Equestrian, Inc. , a private, not for profit organization providing a comprehensive therapeutic equine program using horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for children and adults with disabilities, has launched a new program for children ages 2-5 years. The Barnyard Buddies Program is a hands-on learning program which involves Pal-O-Mine’s therapy animals. It is facilitated by experienced and licensed educational and healthcare professionals who will use an experiential approach to learning. Its unique, age-appropriate curriculum includes social-emotional, physical, cognitive, and imaginative concepts and activities such as expressive art projects. Additionally, it incorporates focused exposure to pre-reading/ reading, mathematics, and

problem-solving skills. Children enjoy learning in Pal-O-Mine’s naturalistic learning environment full of positive support. Children of all levels of abilities are welcome. The Barnyard Buddies program consists of four sessions held once a week on Tuesday mornings at Pal-O-Mine Equestrian, 829 Old Nichols Road, Islandia, NY. Session dates are April 26th, May 3rd, May 10th and May 17th. Each session is 90-minutes long and begins at 9:30 AM and ends at 11:00 AM. Sessions are limited to a maximum of ten children. One parent or caregiver must accompany each child. The fee for the fourweek program is $150 per child and must be paid in full prior to the first session. In support of their mission of giving back to veterans and first responders, nonprofit Paws of War recently hosted their “Hearts and Heroes” event at their headquarters in Nesconset, where they provided 27 service animals with free veterinary care, which included wellness checks, flea and tick medications, vaccinations, bags of dog food and microchipping service. The pandemic has brought financial challenges to veterans and first responders Many disabled veterans live on low or fixed incomes and their service animal’s medical care is essential so they can provide the level of support and comfort upon which the veterans depend. “As a former veteran, I know how critical and expensive it is to take care of these service animals. They are more than just pets; these animals provide emotional support and tasks for these heroes when it is needed most,” said Kelli Porti, Veteran & Community Outreach Liaison for Paws of War. Dr. Marissa Altieri, DVM, volunteered her expert veterinary care to the pop-up clinic and its patients, donating her time to assist Paws of War as a way to give back to the community and support the non-profit’s mission.

The opioid epidemic has highlighted that all ages, socio-economic backgrounds, and all communities can be profoundly vulnerable to addiction. It is also understood that most often, family members are deeply affected by addiction and require support and well as an understanding the complexities of the disease and how to support a loved one through their recovery. Early education about addiction is critical along with early interventions that build individual, family and community protective factors to reduce the likelihood of young people resorting to substances to cope with life’s challenges. In light of marijuana legalization, it is so important that parents learn the detrimental effects of all substances on the developing brain. The Impact Of Volunteers Strong communities are able to thrive thanks to the efforts of their residents, including those who give up their free time to volunteer with local charitable organizations. Though the impact of volunteers is often seen through the lens of the projects they help to initiate and complete, there’s no denying just how valuable

volunteers are from an economic standpoint. In its 2018 “Volunteering in America Report,” AmeriCorps, an organization dedicated to strengthening communities and fostering civic engagement through service and volunteering, reported that Americans volunteered nearly 6.9 billion hours worth an estimated $167 billion in

2017. Volunteering figures to be even more valuable in the months and years ahead as towns, cities and countries look to recover from a global pandemic that claimed millions of lives and devastated economies big and small. As the world attempts to rebuild itself once the pandemic has ended, volunteers can play vital roles in reestablishing

their communities. In fact, many people have already made that recognition. According to data from the professional social networking site LinkedIn, the site’s users had added more than 110,00 volunteer activities to their profiles between the early stages of the pandemic in 2020 and the end of summer 2020.

Sarah Grace Foundation To Host Virtual 5K Race

The Sarah Grace Foundation for Children With Cancer, Inc. is once again calling all runners, walkers, cyclists and wheelchair athletes for its 2022 virtual 5K. Participants in the “Hugs for Sarah 2022 Virtual 5K” can run alone, with a friend or with a team, and all entrants will receive a custom race bib and medal. Registration is online only and will take place to April 30 with a registration fee of $35. Participants can sign up on the Foundation’s website, https:// thesarahgracefoundation. org/shop-donate/. Anyone registering prior to March 31 will be entered in a drawing for a $50 Amazon gift card as well. “In the absence of in-person fundraising events, virtual events have become crucial in helping fulfill the Sarah Grace Mission: providing smiles to children with cancer, one child at a time!” said Matt Weippert, president of the Foundation. “As we enter a post pandemic world we look forward to once again hosting in-person events such as our annual Night of Laughter and perhaps an in-person 5K” An email address is required during registration in order for participants to receive their

race bibs. All participants must also provide a street address to receive their medals. The Foundation encourages all participants to share photos from their virtual 5K with the hashtag #HugsForSarah5K”. Photos may also be emailed to the Foundation. Participants can begin the race any time after registration, but must share their completion efforts prior to May 31. The Sarah Grace Foundation is named in honor of Sarah Grace Weippert, who lost her nine-month battle with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in November 2002 at 12 years old. Sarah’s birthday is March 31 so join Matt, Marissa, and James Weippert as well as the Foundations supporters as they run the 3.1 for Sarah and all children with cancer in the #HugsForSarah5k. 2022 Trout Unlimited Fly Casting Clinic

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is pleased to announce that “Fly Casting Clinics” and instructional courses will be offered at two Long Island State Parks. The Long Island Chapter of Trout Unlimited will be conducting two clinics on “Basic Fly Casting”, one on Saturday, April 2nd at Connetquot River State Park Preserve in Oakdale and one on Saturday, April 9th at Caleb Smith State Park Preserve in Smithtown. The clinics will be held rain or shine, from 10:00AM – 1:00PM, and are open to everyone 16 years and older. If you own fly fishing equipment, bring it with you, but it is not required to attend. Clinic topics will include basic casting instructions, equipment

needs and selection, conservation, and safety techniques. Reservations are required and accepted beginning two weeks prior to each clinic. There is no registration fee, however, there will be an $8.00 vehicle use fee in effect. The Long Island State Park Region also operates Nissequogue River Fly Fishing School at Caleb Smith State Park Preserve. The school offers a series of ongoing instructional classes for groups and individuals in basic to advance freshwater and saltwater fly fishing and casting techniques, stream entomology, and still water (pond) techniques. Since that time, students and marine biologists have been tracking Peachy Keen’s progress from Long Island down the East Coast to Northern Florida. The book, written and illustrated by the 17 students of the NCRMS Science Club, tells the story about the students’ experiences and the lessons they learned about marine mammals

that inhabit NY waters and the importance of keeping beaches clean. It also includes photos of Peachy Keen’s rehabilitation and journey back to the ocean. The New York Marine Rescue Center is a rescue and rehabilitation organization that promotes marine conservation. Its mission is to preserve and protect the marine environment through conservation efforts including rescue, rehabilitation, education and research. Since its inception in 1996, the New York Marine Rescue Center has rescued more than 3,900 animals including over 119 sea turtles, 762 seals and seven cetaceans. The Miller Place School District recently celebrated the official book launch of Peachy Keen, a book written and illustrated by Science Club students from North Country Road Middle School about their adventures rescuing a local sea turtle. The book launch was the culmination of a year-long science club project in partnership with the NY Marine Rescue Center in Riverhead. Canon USA sponsored the Marine Center program and graciously covered the costs of printing 250 copies, which are on sale at the NY Marine Rescue Center, the aquarium gift shop and at the MacArthur Airport gift shop. All proceeds from the sale of the book will go to supporting the work of the NY Marine Rescue Center. “This activity is exemplary of the Miller Place School District’s mission to empower students to creatively put their

Spring Family Fishing Festival Spring Fishing Festival at Belmont Lake State Park is an excellent way to kick off the fishing season and introduce family and friends to the sport with no license needed. Festival attendees can learn about freshwater fishing opportunities on Long Island and try their hand at fishing for trout while kids can participate in the casting contest and other fun activities.” “Fishing is a great way for New Yorkers to enjoy the outdoors and appreciate the environment,” said State Parks Long Island Regional Director George Gorman Jr. “I encourage anglers of all ages to discover what a great place Belmont Lake State Park is to try fishing.”

Festival activities begin at 10 a.m., and are provided free of charge. Activities include open fishing, casting instruction, rod use, fish identification, fishing instruction, fly-casting demonstrations, and a fish cleaning station. DEC and local fishing clubs will host informational displays and loaner rods and free bait will be available to participants. The supply of loaner rods is limited and participants are encouraged to bring their own fishing tackle if possible. Children’s activities include the “Spring Fling” casting contest, as well as hands-on educational displays by DEC’s Education Unit. Children participating in the casting contest will

have a chance to win prizes supplied by DEC’s I FISH NY Program. This event will be held rain or shine. The Spring Fishing Festival is designated as a Free Fishing Event, so the freshwater fishing license requirement for anglers ages 16 and older is suspended for this event only. After 4 p.m., anglers will need a valid State freshwater fishing license to legally fish. All fishing regulations will continue to apply. A vehicle use fee of $8 will be in effect. Parking is free for Empire Pass holders. The 2022 Empire Pass can be purchased for $80 at State Park offices or online. The festival highlights DEC’s spring trout stocking

program in Nassau and Suffolk counties. Prior to the festival, DEC will stock Belmont Lake with nearly 1,000 brown and brook trout. Additional brook and rainbow trout will be stocked by State Parks. DEC will also stock Upper Twin Pond in Wantagh, Oyster Bay Mill Pond, and Massapequa Creek and Reservoir, along with 14 other Long Island lakes with trout before April 1, providing excellent prospects for spring fishing. In total, DEC’s spring stocking program, conducted by regional freshwater fisheries staff, staff from DEC’s Catskill Fish Hatchery, and volunteers, will place 20,000 brown trout and rainbow trout in ponds and streams in Nassau and

Suffolk counties. A complete list of DEC fish stocking can be found on DEC’s website. Anglers are reminded that trout fishing season on Long Island is year-round for most lakes and streams. There is a daily limit of three fish per person. Spring trout stocking begins in mid-March and will be completed by early May.
