Postscript By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I want to begin by expressing my sincere appreciation to all those readers who took the time to reach out in the last week to express condolences on the passing of my “Pal,” to relate to the sense of loss, to the closeness felt… but, mostly, to comment on how fortunate I was to share such a special bond with my grandfather and develop so many wonderful memories through the years. It is with that sentiment that I choose to pick up this week’s column. Rather than dwell in the sadness, I choose to reflect with a smile – on the love, the laughter, the photo albums, the video footage, the small possessions that embody much larger stories –

all the components that make pile of “unattributed” wisdom up a life well-lived. we all love to call upon from time to time. No matter the Family is precious. We source, the message is clear. know this, of course; but And so, we smile. We reflect. This year’s All Kids Fair will once again entertain families across Long Island. The popular annual event, in its sixth year, will take place on Sunday, April 10th, at the Melville Marriott. The All Kids Fair is a combination of education and activities expo and health and wellness fair. It offers entertainment choices for toddlers through high school, including kids who have special needs or are gifted. Over 80 exhibitor spaces and 24 kids’ classes provide valuable information for kids and their parents and grandparents. A sea of green blanketed the gymnasium at Rocky Point Middle School when the building hosted its first St. Baldrick’s Day program this March. The event, which is hosted throughout the month in locations nationwide, aims to bring

World War II History Port Jefferson Middle School students in Kayleen Everitt’s classes learned indepth details about World War II and the Holocaust when survivor Werner Reich visited on March 18th. The students, who have been studying the genocide in their ELA class, sat in

awe as Mr. Reich provided his compelling account of the Holocaust. Through his words, he offered messages of tolerance and acceptance and explained that “bad things happen when good people do nothing.” To thank Mr. Reich, the ELA students will

be hosting a bake sale fundraiser, in conjunction with the National Junior Honor Society, for the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County. All proceeds will be donated in Mr. Reich’s name.

Sounds of the World Third-graders at Edna Louise Spear Elementary School showcased their musical talents during the building’s annual Music Around the World concert, held on March 16th. As parents and teachers looked on, students performed dances and

instrumental pieces using Orff xylophones, metalophones and glockenspiels. To add to the festive afternoon, they were dressed in either Greek, Mexican, Chinese or Ancient Egyptian-inspired attire. The multicultural event concluded with

the grade level joining together to sing, “Hello to all Children of the World” and performing a Russian dance called “Sasha.” The event culminated the students’ world music unit.

SCOPE Awards

GOING FOR A RIDE - Miller Place School District’s Laddie A. Decker Sound Beach School students tackled such topics as bullying, cyberbullying, perseverance, self-discipline, respect, teamwork, mental health and more with Chris Poulos; a youth motivational speaker. Poulos uses outrageous stunts to supplement his lessons with students. As a world champion bicycle stunt rider he mesmerizes his audience with unbelievable bicycle stunts while engaging students in character development discussions.

Four Port Jefferson School District educational professionals were recognized by SCOPE Education Services as premier leaders in their fields and presented with 2016 SCOPE Awards of Excellence. The awardees were among a group of 123

educators, support staff and volunteers throughout Suffolk County who were honored at SCOPE’s Educational Excellence Awards ceremony, held at Villa Lombardi’s on Holbrook on March 14th. The Port Jefferson School District extends its congratulations to

Peter Burara, who was recognized with a Service to Teaching award; Jason Carella, who received a Support Staff award; Sean Leister, who was honored with an Administrative Service award; and Naomi Solo, who earned a community service award.

Miller Place School District’s North Country Road (NCR) Middle School and Miller Place High School recently welcomed retired New York Police Department Detective Thomas Grimes from New York’s Finest Speakers to talk to the student body about internet awareness. Detective Grimes is a veteran of the New York City Police Department and dedicates his time to

educating and protecting today’s young people and their parents from threats posed by internet usage and drug involvement. The presentation circulated around the threats students could potentially encounter when using social media/ networking sites and apps including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat. Detective Grimes enlightened

Internet Safety students with real life threatening scenarios and why it is so important to protect your information online. Parents of the District also attended a version of the assembly that focused on monitoring internet use to be sure their children are using it in a positive way instead of discouraging internet use in general.

PARADE MARCHERS - On March 13th, the annual Rocky Point St. Patrick’s Day Parade, hosted by the Friends of St. Patrick, was held. The parade route traveled on Route 25A from Miller Place to Rocky Point and featured floats from local organizations, fire departments, local school bands, scout troops, antique automobile clubs and Irish pipe bands.

Since 1992, he has contributed illustrations and more than eighty covers to The New Yorker, including “Deluged,” which was voted Cover of the Year by the American Society of Magazine Editors in 2006, and “The Politics of Fear,” a finalist for the same award in 2009. His work has also appeared in Vanity Fair, Time, Rolling Stone, and The Atlantic, and he illustrated Frank Rich’s weekly column in the New York Times. He has been honored with exhibitions and awards from the Society of Illustrators, Print, and American Illustration, and is a member of the

Art Directors Club Hall of Fame. His work for children includes “George Washington’s Birthday” and “Once Upon a Time, the End (Asleep in 60 Seconds).” A natural storyteller and an intrepid reporter with a gift for making cutting-edge science understandable, Jonathan Weiner is one of the most distinguished popularscience writers in the country: his books have won the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Critics Circle Award, and the Los Angeles Times Book Prize. The Jazz Loft

On March 12th, Councilwoman Valerie M. Cartright attended a reception in honor of the late Mr. Arthur Prysock’s collection at the Jazz Loft in Stony Brook. Mr. Prysock was a jazz singer who recorded many popular songs over the course of his more than forty year career. He was the recipient of the 1995 Pioneer Award from the Rhythm and Blues

Foundation. His wife, Mrs. Jean Prysock, was celebrated at this event for her generosity and contributions to the Jazz Loft and the Three Village area. The Jazz Loft, run by musician Tom Manuel, is housed in the historic building at 275 Christian Avenue in Stony Brook, the original location of the Stony Brook Fire Department. The Jazz Loft

not only serves as a home for Jazz memorabilia and archives, it also provides music education to the community. Mrs. Prysock worked alongside Gloria Rocchio, President of Ward Melville Heritage Organization and Tom Manuel to facilitate the donation of the Arthur Prysock Archives, a wonderful addition to the other collections housed at the Jazz Loft.

The Village of Stony Brook is about to get seriously funny on Thursday, April 14th, when the Long Island Museum welcomes two well-known cartoonists from The New Yorker, Roz Chast and Barry Blitt, who will discuss their careers as cartoonists and their work for the magazine. Seriously Funny, An Evening With The New Yorker begins at 6 p.m. at the Three Village Inn in Stony Brook and includes cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, a panel discussion and a book signing. Pulitzer Prize-winning author Jonathan Weiner (The Beak of the Finch, 1994) will moderate. Roz Chast is the author of more than a dozen books for adults, including Can’t We Talk About Something More Pleasant? (2014), a work that chronicles her relationship with her aging parents as they shift from independence to dependence. It’s a New York Times 2014 Best Book of the Year, 2014 National Book Award Finalist, winner of the 2014 Kirkus Prize, and a winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award for the best books of 2014. She is also the author of numerous books for

Artists on Display Original works created by Rocky Point Middle School’s student-artists Jackson Normandin and Kianna Hammarth were recently on display during the Long Island Museum’s Colors of Long Island Art Exhibit. Jackson, a sixth-grader, was featured for his

“Linear Leaves” watercolor and Sharpie pen drawing. Kianna, an eighth-grader, was featured for her “Animals” in oil pastel. According to the museum’s website, this annual student art exhibition affords an opportunity for students in grades kindergarten

through 12 to show their artwork in a museum setting. Hundreds of proud parents and teachers flock to the museum every year to admire the work of these talented Long Island students, many of whom go on to study art in college. The exhibit will run through May 1st, 2016.

Leading the Way

Earl L. Vandermeulen High School senior Jessie Gray has earned a Principal’s Leadership Award and a $1,000 scholarship from the Suffolk County High School Principals Association. To earn the accolade, Gray was nominated by Principal Christine Austen, who touts the senior as an outstanding student leader. “She doesn’t just lead

from the top down – she works to build consensus and find what’s best for her fellow students,” said Austen. Gray has proved her management skills, not as the leader of just one student organization but several. She is the president of the Student Organization, National Honor Society, Drama Club, Interact Club as well as the secretary of the Leo Club and treasurer of the Tri-M. In each of her roles, she has worked to bring pride to the Port Jefferson School District, while also unifying students and giving back to the community. Most recently

Advancing to State R.C. Murphy and P.J. Gelinas junior high schools’ Science Olympiad teams have extended their longstanding tradition of excellence and once again earned a bid to compete in this year’s New York State Science Olympiad competition held in April in East Syracuse. During the Eastern Long Island Science Olympiad Regional, the three teams representing Gelinas placed first, third and fourth while Murphy’s three teams came in second, fifth and seventh.

Gelinas placed second after competing against 51 teams at the Rustin Invitational Tournament, held in West Chester, Pennsylvania, and both Gelinas and Murphy competed in the Blue Dragon Invitational, held at Jonas Salk Middle School in Levittown. The schools’ teams dominated the playing field throughout this event, and completed the contest by sweeping the top six spots.

Additionally, all six teams earned multiple medals in the contest’s 20 events. With their first and second place wins, both schools will now advance to the New York State Science Olympiad competition, where they will be competing against the best teams from 11 different regions throughout the state. The students prepared for this year’s competition season with the help of their dedicated coaches, student-mentors from Ward Melville High School

Following their success at the regional contest, Ward Melville High School’s Science Olympiad team earned a secondplace finish at this year’s New York State Finals and a bid to compete at the National Science Olympiad Tournament. During the state

competition, Ward Melville competed against the top 411 teams from across New York. Throughout the fast-paced and rigorous program, the team remained steadfast in their work and dominated in the challenging events set before them. This victory wouldn’t have been possible

without the dedication of the entire team and the strong leadership of team captains Coco Wander and Mohit Singh, as well as their coaches. The National Science Olympiad Tournament will take place this May in Wisconsin.

As part of a new music initiative at Edna Louise Spear Elementary School, students are learning to play the keyboard in a lab setting. Throughout the unit of study, taught by music

teacher Jessica Pastor, the students are honing in on skills related to melodies, composing and improvising. The kindergarten through second-grade budding musicians are also

encouraged to practice and perform at home using either a household instrument or piano app on their smart devices. The program will run through the end of the school year.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang The comical antics that followed the creation of a magical car unfolded on the stage at P.J. Gelinas Junior High School when the building’s studentactors performed the Long Island premiere of “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” this March.

The musical, based on the Ian Fleming novel and hit 1968 film, told the tale of an inventor who, unbeknownst to him, restored and old racing car into a flying vehicle capable of many heroic acts. Comedy ensues as devious characters attempt to seize

the car for themselves. This year’s production was once again directed by Gelinas teacher Robert DePersio and included a pit orchestra predominately comprised of studentmusicians.

New Teachers Contract

The Three Village Central School District and Three Village Teachers Association have reached a new labor contract that will carry an overall salary increase of 4 percent during the five-year period of July 1st, 2016 to June 30th, 2021.
