Habitat Suffolk recently raised the walls of the 186th home for low-moderate income working families on Long Island in need of quality, affordable housing. Despite a tough loss during the Class C championship game, the Earl L. Vandermeulen High School girls basketball varsity team will be remembered for making it to the state competition for the first time in Port Jefferson’s history. The team earned the
spot after winning the Long Island and regional championship titles. Their winning streak ended with a buzzer beating 65-63 loss to Watkins Glen at Hudson Valley Community College on March 19th. “They fell just short, but they have changed the basketball culture here
in Port Jefferson,” said Danielle Turner, director of physical education, health and athletics. “What they have done as a team and for our community is something that will be talked about for years to come in Port Jefferson.”

County Honorees Two county employees were rewarded for going above and beyond in their duties as part of a new recognition program sponsored by Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory. Vincent Cordiale, systems analyst supervisor with the county’s information technology department, and Jennifer Kohn, a senior assistant county attorney, were honored with the firstever Employee Excellence
Awards at the Legislature’s March 7th General Meeting in Riverhead. Awards will be given out each General Meeting to acknowledge county employees for their hard work and contribution. “Many county employees work tremendously hard and are valuable assets to their departments, and the Employee Excellence Awards are a way for us to recognize their dedication, outstanding efforts and achievements,” said Presiding Officer Gregory.
“Conscientious, honest and hard-working, Vincent Cordiale and Jennifer Kohn have excelled in their departments, making them perfect candidates for this award. I thank them for their contribution and service to Suffolk on behalf of the citizens of Suffolk County.” Vincent Cordiale, of Rocky Point in Suffolk’s Sixth District, was nominated by IT Commissioner Scott Mastellon. Cordiale has worked with the county
for the last 20 years and is responsible for the county’s technology infrastructure. A lead designer of the county’s redundant data centers, his commitment and dedication helped the county continue to operate during Superstorm Sandy, Hurricane Irene and Super Snowstorm Nemo, and he helped save $150,000 in county funding by obtaining a licensing rule exception. He has a stellar reputation for being the first employee to respond to issues in the evenings,
during the weekends, and even on holidays Jennifer Kohn, of Huntington Station in Suffolk’s 18th District, was nominated by County Attorney Dennis Brown. Now a senior assistant county attorney, she has been working in the county for nearly 30 years. The Northeastern Law School graduate is the only current employee to hold a master’s degree in environmental law. She has represented the county in various fields
such as farm preservation, planning issues and Cornell Cooperative management, and she ushered through the sale of the remediated Circutron property. She has been instrumental in drafting new code and helped coordinate the county’s response to the detection of firesuppressing chemicals at Gabreski and in Yaphank, and to dumping at West Hills County Park.

a complimentary breakfast and warm beverages and an entertaining performance by the fifth-grade select chorus “High Notes.” From beloved songs such as “Danny Boy” and “An Irish Lullaby” to fun pieces such as “Green, Green, Green,” the crowd was impressed with the students’ collective musical talents.
As part of the High Notes performances, several students showcased their individual vocal talents by singing solos and even serving as student conductors. In addition to the musical performances, audience members also enjoyed a few dance performances by local student-Irish step dancers.

Shaving Heads in Support Rocky Point Middle School students and staff members blanketed the school’s gymnasium in a sea of green as they rallied together to raise funds to combat childhood cancers during this year’s St. Baldrick’s event. Surrounded by Irish step dancers and professional bagpipers, more than 25 individuals took part in the main portion of the event
by bravely shaving their heads to show support for those suffering from cancer. The haircuts were provided free of charge with the help of the stylists in the high school’s cosmetology program. Donors pledged funds to support the shavees’ efforts, all of which will benefit local charities that support cancer patients. Last year, the school

orchestrated days can go awry in the blink of an eye, through no fault of our own. How we react, and recover – or don’t, as the case may be – says a lot about our character, or lack thereof. The fact is, more days than not will fall into this category. Seldom do schedules run like clockwork; rare are there uninterrupted intervals of peace and tranquility. Life doesn’t stop for anyone, and you had best hang on for the ride. Speaking of rides, and unexpected detours if you will, I recently took my car – my six-year old “Celeste” – for her annual checkup at the dealership. Over three hours, and nearly $500, later, I left with new rear brakes, an oil change, assorted minor
maintenance and a clean bill of health – for now. One day later, a co-worker said, “Didn’t you just get your car serviced?” Um…yeah? “Brake light is out.” And here I was so excited to no longer have a monthly car payment to contend with. Sigh. Take a deep breath; it calms the mind… so they say. On that note, I am happy to report to many inquiring readers that I have found a new yoga studio at which to continue my practice; new locale, anyway – same teacher, same familiar faces, same positive vibes. It’s amazing what those 75 minutes can do for the soul, even after the most pressing of days. There is something truly healing about those inhales and exhales, even while the mind races through its endless loop of thoughts. We could all benefit from
slowing down the pace a bit, mentally and physically. What has rushing ever accomplished that more careful consideration and contemplation couldn’t have improved upon? Even my baby betta, Spud, seems to have realized this, as he purposefully swims to and fro in his tiny bowl, stopping every so often – about once every five minutes, on average – to carefully inspect the thermometer I recently installed. Maybe he can read? Even his eating habits are methodical, as he carefully chooses each crumb, gobbling them up in – I kid you not – size order. And here I thought I was a bit OCD. Like human, like pet. And with that, the clock has tolled on deadline. And so, In Step readers, I bid you a fond adieu. ‘Til next week. Make it a good one.

On April 5th, countless numbers of Long Islanders will take a step towards being Healthy For Good and walk to commemorate the American Heart Association’s National Walking Day. The Healthy For Good movement is designed to inspire all Americans to live healthier lives and create lasting change. It focuses on the simple idea that making small changes today can create a difference for generations to come. So join the movement and move more with us throughout the month of April! Studies have suggested that moderate physical activity has many proven benefits for overall health, such as lowering blood pressure, increasing HDL, or “good”, cholesterol and controlling weight. All these changes help to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke, the nation’s No. 1 and No. 5 killers. The American Heart Association will kick off the month-long campaign on National Walking Day, April 5th, to encourage people to move more by increasing their physical activity. The campaign is broken down into weekly themes. Week one focuses on walking and the basic tools you need to get started. Walking is one of the safest, least expensive, and most sustainable forms of exercise. Weeks two and three focus on recreational sports and outdoor activities the whole family can do together, and week four focuses on mindful movement and reducing stress by doing activities such as yoga, Pilates and tai chi. The American Heart Association recommends that adults participate in at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous intensity aerobic activity or a combination of both each week. Kids should get at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day. Be part of the movement and register for your free toolkit at www.heart.org/ movemoretoolkit. Irish Math For a lesson rooted in mathematics and character education, Nassakeag Elementary School thirdgrade students in Maureen MacDowell’s class teamed up with fourth-graders in Kathryn Comiskey’s class to make dozens of loaves of
Irish Soda Bread for the St. James Soup Kitchen, just in time for St. Patrick’s Day. Working in teams, the students measured, poured and mixed batter using traditional measuring tools. They were then
Science Bowl Standouts challenged with making equivalent measurements when one of the tools the recipe called for was removed. They worked together to problem-solve and deploy their classroom lessons to complete the recipe.
R.C. Murphy Junior High School’s two Science Bowl Teams recently competed at the regional competition at Brookhaven National Lab and showcased their science knowledge during the challenging contest. Throughout the event, the teams earned high praise for their
sportsmanship and talent. Team 1 won four out of six matches before succumbing to a challenging team from William Floyd. The second team won one match but suffered tough losses during the other matches. The annual competition provides students with the
opportunity to challenge themselves and to learn to work as a team. Each team member has to dedicate him or herself to learning as much as possible about one specific area such as biology, earth science, chemistry, physics, general science and math.

Eighth grade students at the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Jefferson Academic Center located in Port Jefferson constructed a timeline outside their classroom illustrating the key events that occurred during World War II, otherwise known as “The Big One.” The students were assigned to research and collect data about people and events related to World War II for a unit lesson in social studies. “They collected newspaper headlines from 1930 to 1945, photos, maps, political ads, and created a visual account that caused both students and staff in the building to stop and learn,” said Special Education Teacher Christopher Schwabe. The students collected so much information that the timeline spans the entire hallway outside Schwabe’s classroom. “There are important
reasons for students to understand and learn about World War II,” shares Mr. Schwabe. “The lessons are many but for the United States it fostered changes like putting an end to the Great Depression. WWII saw the introduction of radar, the cruise missile, and technology that affected social and political changes. It is a pivotal period of the 20th Century.” The academic program at the Jefferson Academic Center is available to special education and nonclassified “at risk” students who require an alternate approach to learning. Building Character As part of the Rocky Point School District’s ongoing commitment to character education, students at Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School have engaged in a new initiative this spring called the “Peaceful Bus Program.” This schoolwide program is designed to LEPRECHAUN LUCK - To engage students in their studies of mathematics, the Port promote the importance Jefferson Middle School and Earl L. Vandermeulen High School library held an Escape of good behavior, create Room challenge, called Leprechaun’s Luck. As part of the activity, 139 students worked a climate of respect and in pairs and groups to solve a variety of math problems and other riddles to get their gold back from the leprechaun. The aim is to develop a positive and safe environment on the school bus for all students and to increase students’ sense of responsibility for what happens on the school bus. The program was organized by JAE
assistant principal Dr. Courtney Herbert with the help of the school’s bus drivers. Teachers and bus drivers met with students to enhance their bus community through a character education activity. Additionally, the school created a bulletin board of all of the bus route groups to serve as an ongoing reminder of these relationships.
SCOPE Awards Four Port Jefferson School District educational professionals were recognized by SCOPE Education Services as premier leaders in their fields and were presented with 2017 SCOPE Awards of Excellence. The awardees were among a group of over 100 educators, support staff

Hope Walk for Addiction On April 22nd, Councilwoman Jane Bonner, the Town of Brookhaven and Hope House Ministries will cosponsor the Hope Walk for Addiction in memory of Billy Reitzig of Miller Place. Billy tragically passed away from a first time heroin overdose at 25 years young. The Hope Walk for Addiction, which will be held along the Town’s Cedar Beach Nature Walk in Mount Sinai, is designed to generate awareness,
educate and raise funds to help fight addiction and save lives. All proceeds will benefit Hope House Ministries in Port Jefferson and the work that they do to help fight addiction and care for those who are trapped by drug and alcohol abuse. Councilwoman Bonner said, “Billy left behind family and friends who will forever be touched by his beautiful life and heartbreaking story of pain and addiction. Now, one year to the day after
his untimely death, we will all join in at the Hope Walk for Addiction to help those who struggle with drug and alcohol abuse. Eastern Suffolk BOCES is proud to announce that Matthew, a Rocky Point UFSD student enrolled in the Computer Graphics and Arts Program at Islip Career Center and Bellport Academic Center at Patchogue-Medford High School, took first place in the SkillsUSA Area VI Pin Design Contest. Area VI comprises all of Long Island. Over 100 SkillsUSA students from across Long Island submitted designs.
Matthew researched landmarks on Long Island and decided to base his design on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial at Bald Hill. In April, every Long Island student competing in the SkillsUSA State Competition in Syracuse will be wearing the pin designed by Matthew. Students and staff members throughout the Rocky Point School District sported “Lots of Socks” on March 21st in support of World Down Syndrome Day. This day is internationally recognized
since a third copy of the 21st chromosome signifies the condition. In honor of that extra chromosome, individuals wore colorful socks to raise awareness and create conversation about Down
syndrome, diversity and inclusion. In addition to wearing the colorful footwear, participants also donated funds to support the Down Syndrome Advocacy Foundation.

As part of the Three Village Central School District’s ongoing commitment to enhancing school security, the district recently implemented a new type of technology to help alert the community when a lockdown is underway at one of the schools. In partnership with IntraLogic Solutions, blue strobe lights have been installed on the exterior of every school building. Should a lockdown be
initiated in that school, these lights will flash on all sides of the building, serving as a signal that the facility is in lockdown and entry is prohibited. For security reasons, the district defines a lockdown as a time when a threat to the safety and security of students and staff exists within the school building. This differs from a lockout, when the threat exists externally but in the vicinity of the school building (e.g., a criminal

Blue Light Lockdown on the run from law enforcement in the area). The district advises the community and visitors to the schools that if they see the strobes activated, they should return to their vehicle at once and leave the scene, as a critical incident may be unfolding. Although the majority of the details of the system are kept confidential, the district assures residents that once the system and its technology are activated, members of
law enforcement will be notified immediately to respond. Additionally, as per the district’s emergency management plan, parents will be notified immediately upon activation of an actual lockdown and provided with instructions. Residents with any questions regarding this matter can contact the district’s security coordinator at 631.730.5089.

Scouts Honored On Saturday, March 18th, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker joined Boy Scout Troop 204 at the Miller Place High School for an Eagle Scout Court of Honor Ceremony to recognize Eagle Scouts Nicholas Mammina, James Gannon, Charles Smith, and Tyler Rouse. Eagle Scout is the highest rank that can be earned by a Boy Scout, and only a small percentage of scouts are granted this rank after earning 21 merit badges and a lengthy review process. “I would like to commend the Eagle Scouts
of Troop 204 for their enthusiasm, skills, and commitment to improving our community,” said Legislator Anker. “May their actions serve as a model to their peers and inspire them to continue their adventures in scouting. I thank them for their local contributions and wish them the best of luck in their future endeavors.” In order to become Eagle Scouts, each Boy Scout completed a community service project. Nicholas Mammina constructed food storage shelves and an information kiosk for the
food pantry at St. Louis De Montfort. James Gannon organized volunteers and built two picnic tables for Hope House Ministries. Charles Smith built and painted a new outdoor storage shed for American Legion Wilson Ritch Post 432. Tyler Rouse built handicap picnic tables with benches for the Cedar Beach Nature Center, as well as fixed the center’s retaining wall.
