When Rocky Point Middle School Principal Dr. Scott O’Brien asked the hundreds of people gathered in the auditorium to raise a hand if they knew someone affected by cancer, more than half of them did. The serious moment of awareness was a fitting start to the school’s annual St. Baldrick’s Foundation head-shaving event.

“This annual assembly serves as a way for our school community to come together in solidarity with children living with cancer,” Principal Dr. Scott O’Brien said. Money was pledged by donors to support the shavees’ efforts, all of which will be donated to help support people with cancer. With abundant support from both school and community, the fundraising goal was surpassed and $11,000 was raised. Eighth-grader Quentin Palifka was named the top individual fundraiser, having collected $6,018. Quentin said he has been raising money for a number of years, to honor a neighbor’s child who died several years ago. “It was a nice way to honor him,” he said of a child he never got to meet. Port Jefferson School District’s Earl L. Vandermeulen High School student Reid Biondo recently attended the Long Island Science and Engineering Fair, a competition for the most advanced high school projects. His research, “Convolutional Neural Network Classifier for Antarctic Seals,” was

based upon a longstanding association with Dr. Heather Lynch, an associate professor of ecology and evolution at Stony Brook University’s School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences. Biondo conducted research in the Lynch Lab for Quantitative Ecology during his freshman and sophomore years of high school. He wrote code to

take geotagged images from the internet and analyze them to gain a better understanding of specific Antarctic seal distribution. Biondo, a junior, had the unique opportunity to be the only student from the school to attend the eminent event and present and explain his work to experts in their subject areas from local universities, scientific institutions, professionals and peers from other high schools. Encouraging Kindness Thoughtfulness and understanding were at the forefront of the recent Port Jefferson Middle School Random Acts of Kindness initiative. Along with teacher Monica Consalvo, students decorated the school bulletin boards to display the message, “Be SOMEBODY who makes EVERYBODY feel like a SOMEBODY.” There were also quotations about

being kind and festive student-designed heart posters. One day was designated Smile Day, when student volunteers handed out “smile stickers” to each student as they entered school. The event was to promote the idea that “today is going to be a great day – SMILE.” Students extended their compassion into the

My Spring Awakening I have never seen the play which bears my title, nor am I especially familiar with its subject matter; however, I feel it an appropriate moniker on this, March 21st, as I begin to put my thoughts together for the column you are reading. To start, I have been curious for some time as to why the dates for the first “official” days of each of our four seasons seem to fluctuate year to year when, back in school, the calendar remained fairly standard. The Summer and Winter Solstices fell on June 21st and December 21st, respectively; and the Vernal and Autumnal Equinoxes occurred on March 21st and September 23rd, without fail. Now, it seems most have been pushed up by an entire day, throwing my entire elementary school curriculum into question.

Upon doing a bit of research, it seems this variance is due to a combination of factors; namely, that the earth’s elliptical orbit is gradually changing year after year, causing a slight difference in when the planet reaches its 90-degree intervals around the sun, signaling the change of season. Additionally, the concept that days of Equinox result in the precisely equal separation of day and night is also not quite accurate. This, apparently, is due to atmospheric conditions which lead to “refraction,” leading us to believe we are seeing the sun slightly prior to its rise and a bit past its set.

The Welcome Friends soup kitchens have provided hot, nutritious meals five days every week for over 27 years. The volunteer staff has increased to more than 200 remarkable members, and the guests typically number between 50 to sometimes more than 70 each night. Welcome Friends operates with a 100% volunteer staffed organization, assuring contributors that their donations are used exclusively for the preparation and serving of meals. The volunteers together form an outstanding team that addresses hunger and works to expand relationships with individual supporters,

local food markets, farm stands, religious institutions, community leaders, local village government and other agencies. After almost three decades serving the greater Port Jefferson area, the leaders and volunteers of Port Jefferson’s Soup announced their decision to become an independent not-for-profit corporation named “Welcome Friends.” The operation has become self-sustaining, with a solid foundation of local community support. Welcome Friends is currently in need of the following volunteer positions: Cooks, Assistant Cooks/ Food Prep and Pick Up/Delivery and a Grant Writer. Laundry room renovation ideas T o former apartment dwellers or those who have never enjoyed the benefit of a dedicated laundry area, even the smallest washer and dryer space can seem like a luxury. The benefits of dedicated laundry rooms abound. However, disorganized laundry rooms can nullify such benefits. Depending on the needs and preferences of each homeowner, laundry room designs can be customized for convenience.

Employ vertical space

Floor space may be at a premium in a laundry room, especially for those who want to devote as much space as possible to bulk-size washer and dryer units. Therefore, utilizing wall space is key. Use shelving, wire racks, hooks and other organizational tools to store items on the wall. Shelves can be tucked into just about any space, and there are different options that can ﬁt into corners or shallow areas. These are a great option for keeping detergent or other laundry essentials nearby.

Clean designs reduce clutter

Simple, clean designs can be an asset in a laundry room. If budget and space permits, cabinetry built into the design will help keep items out of sight in the laundry room. Cabinets hung directly above the appliances can store detergent, bleach and fabric softener. Use cabinets elsewhere in the room as catch-alls for cleaning supplies used in various other rooms around the house.

Incorporate a sink in the design

Some older laundry room setups have a slop sink to drain discharged water from the washing machine. However, newer homes may have plumbing installed directly through the ﬂoor or walls. It is still a worthwhile idea to have a sink in the laundry room for rinsing out stains, handwashing items and having a go-to sink for messier cleanup.

An organized and efﬁcient laundry room setup can make washing and drying clothes easier.

It’s important to select flooring materials that will not be damaged by contact with moisture or spills. Vinyl, tile and some composite products often make good laundry room floor materials. ardening enthusiasts may have been thinking about their landscape plans throughout the winter, eager to once again get their hands dirty with soil. Whether a home gardener is making preparations for edible crops or beautiful ﬂowers, he or she must take time to make the soil amenable to planting. To establish hearty, durable plants, gardeners can focus on three main areas: addressing soil composition, cultivating and adding nutrients.

the soil. Mother Earth News suggests working on garden soil when the soil is damp but never wet; otherwise, garden soil can become messy and clumpy. Use a digging fork or shovel to lightly turn the soil when it’s mostly dry. Gentle tillings also can open up the soil to incorporate the nutritional amendments and relieve compaction that likely occurred from freezing temps and snow pressure. Tilling also helps with drainage and oxygen delivery to roots. The DIY Network suggests turning over soil at a depth of 12 inches to work the soil — about the length of a shovel spade. However, the resource Earth Easy says that existing garden beds have a complex soil ecosystem and simply top-dressing with compost or manure can be enough preparation for planting. Gardeners can experiment with the methods that work best for their gardens.

Take a sample of the soil and examine it to see what is present. If the soil is too full of clay, too sandy, too dense or too loose, that can lead to problems where plants cannot grow in strong. Work with a garden center to add the right soil amendments to make a rich soil. This may include organic compost or manure, which will also add nutrients to the soil.

Cultivating the soil can involve different steps. Removal of weeds, errant rocks, roots and other items will help prepare

Testing the pH and the levels of certain nutrients in the soil, namely nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium, will give gardeners an idea of other soil additions that may be needed. Soils with a pH below 6.2 often can beneﬁt from the addition of lime several weeks before planting. Soil tests will determine just how much fertilizer to add to the soil. Complete fertilizers will have equal amounts of nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium. Individual fertilizers can amend the soil with only these nutritional elements that are needed. Top-dressing empty beds with a layer of mulch or compost can prevent weed growth and preserve moisture until it is time to plant. If existing shrubs or plants are in garden beds, use more care so as not to disturb roots or dig too deeply. Preparing garden beds takes some effort initially, but can be well worth the work when plants ﬂourish throughout the growing season.

Three Village Central School District’s Nassakeag Elementary School’s student council used their creativity and compassion to create 20 blankets for the Stony Brook Hospital for the Children’s Center this winter. During several council meetings, members worked on making the blankets from fleece. They cut and knotted the ends to create fringe and a few

members sewed the edge. Many worked in small groups and created more than one blanket per group. The completed blankets were delivered to the Child Life administrators in Stony Brook Hospital’s main lobby this March. Students attending the drop off learned how the blankets would go to children who were ill and in need of a little extra

comfort. “It made the members feel proud that their one small act of kindness could bring a smile and comfort to someone, possibly their age, who was undergoing medical treatment,” said teacher Judy Larsen. “Our student council is looking into what we can possibly make for the unit next year.”

Celebrating Math Rocky Point School District’s Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School fourth-grade students in Debbie Vieira and Lisa Celentano’s and Kristie Jackson’s classes celebrated the mathematic number PI on March 14th – which

parts, functions and role of digestion in the body. For this lesson, which was a culmination of the unit, each student was assigned an organ or chemical involved in the digestive process. Students organized themselves in the order of which their job occurs. When it was their turn, they had to perform a task that simulates what happens at each stage.

Whether students were the “teeth” who mashed up a food product into smaller pieces, the “stomach” who along with “hydrochloric acid” blended the food together or the “small intestines” which recovered essential nutrients, every child enjoyed a memorable and at times messy learning experience.

Studying the Culinary World Ward Melville High School Gourmet Foods classes recently learned about the collegiate culinary world when chef Satoko Matthews, community liaison of Suffolk County Community College, came in to speak with the students. During the workshop,

Chef Matthews explained the opportunities that Suffolk County Community College can offer to students that are interested in attending culinary school. These included associates degree in culinary arts, baking and pastry arts, and hospitality management. Additionally, the students learned about

the steps they can take after receiving an associates degree, including entering the workforce or continue to study their craft and earn a bachelor’s degree. To close out the visit, Chef Matthews demonstrated the method for making Gyoza using wrappers and a pork filling.

Interpreting Artwork Through studying the work of several Abstract Expressionist artists such as Franz Kline, Lee Krasner, Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko and Cy Twombly, second-graders in Meghan Hallock’s art classes at Edna Louise Spear Elementary School have discovered how to select a feeling or emotion and achieve that mood using color, line and shape in their own works. “I think it’s so important to teach young artists how to analyze and interpret art,” Hallock said. “Students are learning how

art can convey meaning and not just be a pretty picture on a wall.” As part of the state learning standards for the arts, analyzing and interpreting artwork by engaging in the process of art criticism is a valuable tool for students to learn, allowing them to gain insight into the works’ meaning. Hallock provided each student a template to use for the critiquing process which asked them to describe the painting using the art elements, think about what the artwork was

about and what feelings they experienced, ask the artist questions and give a compliment. Students worked with a partner and critiqued each other’s paintings. When they finished, they shared what they wrote and answered each other’s questions. “They were able to pick up on certain emotions through this process and even surprise the artist with their inquiries,” Hallock said. “They had a lot to say about their peers’ paintings as well as their own. They’re all so proud of their work and so am I.”
