Talking Points By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Discovering The Passion To Do What You Love … This is the topic I selected for my upcoming presentation at the annual C.W. Post Honors Conference, a oneday schedule of seminars and panels, lectures and performances, all centered around a common theme, this year’s being Creative Engagement. When initially approached about the prospect of being a part of this Conference, one I had attended each year of my own tenure at C.W. Post, my first reaction was the usual mix of anxiety and sheer terror that comes when any form of public speaking is broached. And this, for an entire hour, in front of the best and the brightest my alma mater has to offer? I could feel the panic setting in, and the event was still months away.

Now, only one week remains ‘til the big day – and I’m still wrestling with what, exactly, I have to offer this group of impressionable young minds, all at the point in their lives where they are desperately trying to do exactly what my title suggests – discover that passion which will drive them into a particular field, hopefully to stay, for a long and fulfilling career. I guess a good starting point would be the initial inspiration for my topic, a letter I received from a local reader many months ago, in response to a column I had recently published, stating: “I wanted to let you know that indeed your words were read and inspired someone… as a humble writer myself, I know that is all we really want after all.” Creative Engagement at its best, no? Just the knowledge that my words had reached someone is some of the most positive feedback one can receive.

This is not to say that we all need constant pats on the back in order to feel valued and successful (although some certainly do). It simply reaffirms the notion that what we do for a living should be more than a job; it should reach far beyond the scope of merely being a means to an end, a way to pay the bills, etc. Above all else, it should engage YOU. If others find a similar connection through you, so much the better, an added bonus. I still don’t know exactly what I will say once I step to the head of the classroom a little over a week from now. But I suppose a good starting point is simply speaking openly and honestly and attempting to make a connection. And if I can reach even one person and help them discover his/her own passion in life, I will consider it a success.

Founded by inventor Dean Kamen, who introduced the IBOT Mobility System and the Segway® Human Transporter (HT), FIRST was created to inspire an appreciation of science and technology in young people, their schools, and their communities. Now in its 25th season, the FIRST Robotics Competition anticipates more than 2,700 teams in 92 cities worldwide to compete in 98 Regional and District Competitions. More than 2,000 students will compete at the Long Island Regional FIRST Robotics Competition to earn a spot at the FIRST Championship, to be held April 24-27 at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis, Missouri. This year’s challenge, “Aerial AssistSM,” is played by two Alliances of three teams each. Alliances compete by trying to score as many balls as possible into goals during a two-and-a-halfminute match. Additional points are earned by robots working together to score goals, and by throwing and catching balls over a truss suspended just over five feet above the floor as they move the ball down

Another sign of the season may be the urge you get to do some spring cleaning. But you might not have realized that some of the same spring-cleaning techniques that can be used on your home can also apply to your investments and your overall financial strategy. Here are a few ideas to consider: Get rid of “clutter.” As you do your spring cleaning, you may well find some clutter — a bunch of items you no longer need. As an investor, you might look at your portfolio and also find “clutter” in the form of investments that are no longer appropriate for your objectives. For example, perhaps some of them are virtual duplicates of other investments you own, thereby diminishing your potential for diversification. Or maybe some investments are now too risky for your needs. In any case, you may be better off rebalancing your portfolio. Get organized. As you clean your home, you might find ways to organize your belongings and furniture more efficiently. And you may also be able to organize your investments more effectively. One possibility: Consider consolidating your investment accounts with one provider. If you have an IRA here, another one there and some other investments scattered about, you may be paying more in fees and commissions than is necessary. By consolidating these investments, you might save money and paperwork — and more importantly, you may find it easier, with all your investments under one “roof,” to follow a single, unified investment strategy. Seal “cracks.” Over time, the grout between your kitchen or bathroom tiles can crack, so you’ll need to re-grout to protect your flooring. And you may find that, in looking at your overall financial strategy, your “protection” component — primarily in the form of insurance — might have developed some “cracks” or “chips.” Specifically, has your life insurance kept up with changes in your family situation? Events such as marriage, remarriage or the arrival of a new child can all trigger the need to review your life insurance. And you’ll also want to make sure you have adequate disability insurance. Consult with a financial professional for information on appropriate protection vehicles. Do some “dusting.” As part of your spring cleaning,

Music Classroom The students at Edna Louise Spear Elementary School recently had the opportunity to incorporate technology into the music classroom through the use of iPads. Students were able to play games

that focused on concepts such as melody, ear training, rhythm, notation, composing and even practicing recorder skills. “The use of iPads and technology in the classroom is beneficial

because it allows for differentiation for all learners,” said Edna Louise Spear Elementary School music teacher Lisa Scrom. “We look forward to using the iPads again in the future.”

It was standing room only in the barber shop at the Gary D. Bixhorn Technical Center (BTC) on Thursday, March 6th. The first eleven points of the Boy Scout Law must be demonstrated in order to go from one rank to the next, including Eagle. The 12th point - “A Scout Is Reverent” - can be demonstrated in a variety of ways including the earning of the religious award of the Scout’s individual faith. As with all the religious emblems, these are not an award for Scouting skills, but rather an emblem authorized by the Boy Scouts of America to be worn on the Scout’s uniform after satisfactory

completion of the necessary requirements. For the 8 to 11 year-old Cub Scouts, the Aleph Emblem requires seven areas of study, including Torah, prayers, religious holidays, the synagogue or temple, Bible heroes, famous American Jews, and the land of Israel. In observance of the 12th point of the Scout Law, Webelos Scout Steven Fontana of Cub Scout Pack 601 (Stony Brook) and now of Boy Scout Troop 377 (Setauket) was presented with the Aleph Emblem on February 14th, at Temple

The category that raised the most money determined her course of action with all funds earmarked for St. Baldrick’s. In a close race, she raised slightly more money in the save category and inspired many friends, family, colleagues, and students to either participate or contribute to the cause. Day two of the event took place the following day at the Edward J. Milliken Technical Center in Oakdale, another Academy location, and on Saturday, the barbering students donated their time at an additional St.

Baldrick’s event held at Napper Tandy’s Irish Pub in East Northport. All told, the students raised more than $9,000. Said Luke Mahoney, barbering instructor at BTC, “For me, being an instructor includes much more than teaching my students a particular skill set. Salons and barbershops are often cornerstones of many communities and neighborhoods. I always try to instill a sense of pride in my students about being part of the community in which they work and the importance of social consciousness. Hosting these fundraisers and giving my students the opportunity to participate behind the chair, in addition to raising money for such a worthy organization, has been a remarkable experience for all of us.”

Spring Savings at Stevens

Rocky Point High School’s 9th through 12th grade band students had the chance to learn and perform alongside members of the Quantico Marine Corps Band, one of the oldest professional musical ensembles in the Marine Corps. During the music clinic, the professional musicians joined with the students in performing several of the selections that the high school bands had

been learning. Between each selection, the groups discussed the pieces and the adult musicians spoke about how the students can enhance their performances and shared techniques for maximizing the sounds of each instrument. “Working with the Quantico Marine Corps Band was a fantastic learning experience for the students,” said Amy Schecher, secondary

music chairperson and band teacher. “They had the opportunity to learn valuable performance tips about technique and expression. The experience of performing next to professional musicians was invaluable and truly enjoyed by all.” In addition to the mentoring component of the workshop, two small ensembles from the Marine Corps performed for the students.

With less than forty school days of my senior year left, I am beginning to understand why people are always talking about savoring the moment. As a high school senior, I am very excited to be “in the home stretch,” even though this means that I am one step closer to leaving my home, my school and my family. With just about four months before I leave, I find myself spending more time with my brother. Lately, we have been bonding over the simplest things. Perhaps, this is because he will be sad when I

leave for college, like my mom predicts; however I have my own theory. I believe that I am the one who will miss him when I leave for college! As the primary agent of my socialization for these past seventeen years, my family has had a ridiculous impact on my personality. My brother, more than anyone, has shaped my life. He is the peanut butter to my jelly; my little brother has always been there for me. Even though I am counting down the days before I hit the road, I am well aware that my days with family

are numbered. I know that I am going to miss them. Even though I will love college, I will miss playing catch with my little brother on the front lawn. I will miss my mom’s cooking, and I will miss my dad’s antics. As I cross off each day on the calendar of my high school career, I can say that I enjoyed every minute that I spent with my friends and family. When I start the next chapter of my life, I will not forget the memories that have been formed or the bonds that I have made with my friends, and most importantly, my brother.

Experimenting With Science As an extension of their classroom studies, W.S. Mount Elementary School first, second and third grade students had the chance to experience a number of complex science topics through hands-on activities. With the help of presenters from Mad Science, the students each took part in workshops centered on the topics of dry ice, sonic sounds and chemistry, respectively. During the third-grade chemistry workshop, the students learned

about different types of chemical reactions, the differences between solids and bases and the properties of a chemical. To visually demonstrate how a chemical reaction creates a new substance comprised of its original components, the presenter demonstrated an ironoxide reaction for the class. At each of their stations, the students then had the opportunity to replicate a carbon dioxide reaction using a balloon, sodium bicarbonate and vinegar,

as well as use an indicator solution to test if a material was a base or acid. Lastly, the students learned about the differences between exothermic and endothermic reactions with the help of a heating pack. At the end of each workshop, the students received a beaker and instruction manual to continue their experiments at home. They also earned a certificate of completion.

Advancing To Geo Bee student Leland Held has qualified to represent the district and participate at the state level of the National Geographic Bee. This is the second level of the competition, which is now in its 26th year. Bees were held in schools with students in grades four through eight throughout the state to determine each school’s winner. SchoolPort Jefferson Middle level winners then took a School eighth-grade qualifying test, which they

submitted to the National Geographic Society. The top 100 scorers in New York State will compete in Albany this April. The state winner will receive $100, the “Complete National Geographic on DVD” and a trip to Washington, D.C., where he or she will represent New York in the national finals at National Geographic Society headquarters in May.

P.J. Gelinas Junior High School’s Science Olympiad team placed first and R.C. Murphy Junior High School’s team placed second in the Eastern Long Island Regional Science Olympiad Tournament, held at Candlewood Middle School. Gelinas and Murphy each entered three teams, each of which competed in 18 events against 30 teams from schools all across Suffolk County. Gelinas’s “Varsity” team won an

unprecedented nine gold, five silver and two bronze medals in the 18 events. The three Murphy teams won a total of five gold, nine silver and eight bronze medals. Three Village dominated the competition with all six teams, placing in the top six out of 33 teams that competed in the tournament. Teams from both schools will now advance to the state tournament, which will be held at Greece Arcadia

Save-A-Pet Animal Rescue and Adoption Center, Inc. held its Fourth Annual “St. Pitty’s Day” Party on March 16th to raise awareness and funds for the shelter’s many pit bulls. Those in attendance had the opportunity to meet and greet the companion animals that were up for adoption at Save-A-Pet. A total of six

With a season record of 45-0, Nicholas went on to earn another Suffolk County and New York State title earlier this year. His overall career record is 183-3, with 133 consecutive wins. He is a four-time League I Champion, a four-time Suffolk County Champion, a four-time All-State wrestler, a three-time New York State champion, and a 2013 All-American. Game Farm To Open On April 12th, the Long Island Game Farm — Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo will be opening for its 45th season of providing Long Island students and families with a wide array of animals, education, and most of all — fun. From April to September, the Game Farm will be open on different days of the week for children and adults to explore. In celebration of its 45th season, the Game Farm will be offering

coupons on its Facebook page and website for $4.50 off a regular ticket price valid for the opening weekend. From domestic to exotic animals, the Long Island Game Farm has so much to offer, all while providing an outdoor educational experience. Unlike many other zoos, children get a one-of-a-kind experience at the Game Farm, where they are encouraged to engage and feed countless animals

by petting, holding, and bottle-feeding. On March 7th, secondgrade students at Edna Louise Spear Elementary School celebrated their unique family heritages as part of an International Tasting Party. The classes of Laura Kelly, Carleen Parmegiani, Darleen Wells and Maureen Zajac invited family members into their classrooms for a feast that featured an array of dishes representing their

countries of study. “Students in all four classes researched a country from their family’s lineage and created a poster to present to their peers,” said Parmegiani. “Each project included a doll dressed in traditional attire, the country’s flag and map, and at least five additional facts.” The students also created PowerPoint presentations

As part of the culminating activity, parents and their children teamed up for an international scavenger hunt that took an in-depth look at countries around the world. To conclude the event, families were given a cookbook containing the various family recipes highlighted at the feast.

Raising Funds Day, Kelly organized a school fundraiser for debra, a nonprofit organization dedicated to funding research and providing support services and programs for those with EB. With two family members affected by EB, the cause is a personal and important one to Kelly. “I was hoping to create more of an awareness for this cause,” said Kelly. “Too often, we don’t realize how lucky we are or take our

health for granted.” For her effort, she coordinated a Wear Red Day at the school and sold silicone bracelets. Each individual who donated to the cause had their name written on a red butterfly, as individuals with this disease are often called butterfly children, since their skin is as fragile as butterflies’ wings. The inscribed butterflies were displayed on a poster in the main hallway.

Holocaust survivor Werner Reich visited Port Jefferson Middle School students in Kayleen Everitt’s eighth-grade English class and Earl L. Vandermeulen High School students in Philip Giannusa’s Holocaust elective course on March 7th. Prior to his visit, the classes studied Eliezer Wiesel’s Holocaust novel Night and read articles about Reich for a richer understanding of his past. “These human, personal experiences are needed for a deeper, more complex knowledge of history, a knowledge that textbooks alone cannot provide,” said one eighth-grader.

“Learning about the Holocaust from the eyes of someone who has experienced this intense hatred is perhaps most important because hatred still exists in our society. Many people experience it every day because of things that they cannot change about themselves.” The presentation outlined Reich’s personal experience as a teenager who survived the Terezín, Auschwitz II-Birkenau and Auschwitz I concentration camps. “I am lucky to have survived,” he said. “It is my responsibility to ensure that nothing like this ever happens again.” Reich also urged listeners to be “JUST”

people who follow four simple steps when faced with an adversity: judge the situation, understand the problem, solve and take action. “Indifference kills,” said Reich. “Do not tolerate bullies or allow them to silence you.” “We are very grateful to have Mr. Reich, a longtime friend of our school, here to give us an account of his experiences,” said one student. Members of the National Junior Honor Society, who were also in attendance, made and distributed yellow ribbons to promote genocide awareness.

The devastating effects bullying had on his son and their family echoed throughout Ward Melville High School and P.J. Gelinas Junior High School when John Halligan presented the anti-bullying program, Ryan’s Story. The workshop, which is based on his son Ryan’s life, told the tale of a

13-year-old middle school student from Vermont who committed suicide in 2003 because of bullying. Throughout the workshops, Mr. Halligan recounted the story of his son’s life, the ridicule he endured both in school and online, the devastating impact his son’s suicide has had on his life, and

the power of forgiveness. After telling his son’s tragic story, Mr. Halligan urged students to have the courage to be upstanders rather than bystanders. A special program was presented to parents at Ward Melville High School following the in school programs for students.

T-Shirt Design Contest

Arrowhead Elementary School students and staff members have been displaying the positive character traits and attributes described in

their schoolwide character education program throughout the school year. In celebration of the initiative and to help

promote the program, the school’s fifth- and sixth-graders recently had the chance to create original designs depicting the phrase “Arrowhead Cares.” The submissions were judged internally, and two winners – Brianna Jimenez and Claire Cituk – were selected. The drawings of both students will be featured on commemorative 2014 Arrowhead Cares T-shirts. Along with the district’s other schools, Arrowhead has been incorporating the character education program PBIS – Positive Behavioral Interventions

and Supports – into school activities and everyday experiences. Through the program, students are rewarded and praised for exhibiting positive behaviors in the hopes of encouraging similar behaviors in the future. At Arrowhead, the staff has incorporated the districtwide PBIS initiative into its existing Rachel’s Challenge program. Students who are “caught” demonstrating acts of kindness are given a paper chain of kindness link, which bears their name and the behavior displayed. Teachers

connect these links in a display throughout the building, and at the end of the year the links are all connected for a schoolwide celebration. “PBIS is very important, as it clearly outlines expectations and rules for the students within the classroom and throughout the entire school,” said Arrowhead PBIS committee chair Judy Forgione. “These behaviors are consistently encouraged and reinforced. Research proves that as a result, students will continue to engage in those positive behaviors.

As educators, we need to nurture the child’s academic as well as social and emotional needs.” Students and teachers had the chance to purchase Arrowhead Cares T-shirts. The school also plans to organize a special Arrowhead Cares day to celebrate characterbuilding activities, at which time students and staff can wear their commemorative shirts. The T-shirt design contest was organized by art teacher Rachel Condron with the help of student teacher Sabrina Cacciatore.
