Tips When Planting Shade Trees
Dear Neighbors, We truly hope that you and all your loved ones remain safe during this trying time. Please listen to the advice of health care experts. Remember to check on those that are the most vulnerable to the coronavirus, and help them as best as you can. We are all in this together and we will come out of it together. We must remain informed, stay calm and ride the wave the best we can. Our local small businesses have been greatly affected by this pandemic. It is more important now then ever that we support them by shopping local as much as we can, whether that be purchasing a gift card for a future use, ordering delivery or shopping online. We should all try to do out part to help these businesses stay afloat through this tough time. Our readers remain loyal and we are so grateful for that. It is a priveledge to be a part of the community and we believe we are all stronger together. Remember that you can always read all our editions online at www.southbaysneighbor.com. Stay safe everyone. This too shall pass! ~ The Staff of Long Island Media Group

The U.S. Department of Energy notes that shading is the most cost-effective way to reduce solar heat gain in a home. Shading also cuts air conditioning costs, which tend to be expensive in areas with warm, humid climates. In fact, the DOE notes that well-planned landscapes can reduce unshaded homes’ air conditioning costs by anywhere from 15 to 50 percent. The Arrowhead PBIS committee then voted on its top 20 favorite hearts and then used a local sign company to transform them into large vinyl decals, which now
decorate the hallway floors of Arrowhead. Every time a student walks past any of these decals, they will not only be blown away by the artistic talents of their peers, but they will also be reminded to always have a growth mindset, know their worth and set out to be the absolute best they can be.

Pal-O-Mine Equestrian Receives $1,500 Grant from The Starbucks Foundation Pal-O-Mine Equestrian, Inc. (www.pal-o-mine. org, Islandia, NY), a private, not for profit organization providing a comprehensive therapeutic equine program using horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for children and adults with disabilities, recently announced that it has received a $1,500 grant from The Starbucks Foundation. The funds will be used to help our veteran population here on Long Island who are survivors of traumatic brain injuries and dealing with other related issues of war. Pal-O-Mine CEO and founder Lisa Gatti stated, “Thanks to the generosity of The Starbucks Foundation, Pal-O-Mine will be offering military service men and women the opportunity to
participate in days of wellness where they can learn natural horsemanship, as well as participate in our Equine Assisted Psychotherapy sessions. For some, it will be the first time they feel heard, understood, present, worthy and alive. As they build trust in their equine partners they will begin to trust themselves and shed a protective layer that has been holding them hostage for too long.” Instrumental in securing The Starbucks Foundation grant for Pal-O-Mine were two Starbucks store managers, Islandia, NY Store Manager Deborah Gregorio and Nesconset, NY Store Manager Dianne Devinney, who initially requested the grant. About Pal-O-Mine Founded in 1995 by Lisa Gatti, Pal-O-Mine is
a private, not for profit organization providing a comprehensive therapeutic equine program using horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for children and adults with disabilities, as well as those who have been abused or neglected, veterans and the economically compromised. PalO-Mine offers a broad range of programs many of which involve the organization’s herd of therapy horses and livestock. Pal-OMine relies on grants and contributions from private citizens, foundations and businesses to help raise funds. For more information on Pal-OMine, visit:www.pal-omine.org or call: 631348-1389.

Organic Mulch Organic mulches are made up of materials that decompose over time. The experts at BobVila.com note that, because they decompose over time, organic mulches must be replenished on a regular bais. Hardwood and softwood chips are among the most popular and recognizable organic mulches. Evergreen needles, leaves, grass clippings, and compost mixes also fall under the organic mulch umbrella. Many gardening enthusiasts prefer organic mulches because they help soil retain moisture, improve soil fertility and help to deter weed growth.
Gravel, brick chips and crushed stone are examples of inorganic mulches. Homeowners who do not intend to plant after laying mulch may lean toward inorganic mulches, as they won’t require much work, if any, after being laid. However, the Chicago Botanic Garden notes that inorganic mulches do not improve soil quality. In fact, because inorganic mulches like rocks and stones absorb heat, they can be detrimental to plants in areas where weather tends to be very dry and hot. The right mulch for a given property depends on a host of factors. Understanding the differences between organic Inorganic Mulches and inorganic mulches is Inorganic mulches are a great first step toward permanent because they do finding the right mulch for not decompose over time. your landscape.

MISSING PETS
The benefits of mulch are widely known among lawn and garden enthusiasts. By insulating soil from extreme temperatures, helping soil to retain moisture and preventing weed growth, mulch can help plants, trees and gardens thrive, even during periods when Mother Nature can make that very difficult. Novice gardners may find themselves a little confused when visiting a lawn and garden center to purchase mulch. That’s because there are various types of mulches. One of the ways to simplify that is to break mulches down into two main classes: organic and inorganic. Learning to distinguish between these two classes can help homeowners choose the best mulch for their properties.

Pet Food Drive
SUFFOLK ZONE 6 - NEIGHBOR NEWSPAPERS - WEDNESDAY MARCH 25, 2020 • www.southbaysneighbor.com
Until May 1st, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker is partnering with Long Island Cares for a pet food drive at her office in Mount Sinai. Donations for all pets including those with paws, fins, wings, tails, hoofs, and whiskers are welcome! Most needed items include: 5 or 10 pound unopened bags of dog and cat food, canned food, treats, kitty litter, and
new pet toys. “Families in need should not have to choose between feeding themselves or their pets,” said Legislator Anker. “During times of economic hardship, it is especially important that families and their pets stay together.” Established in 2009, Baxter’s Pet Pantry at Long Island Cares distributes pet food to families in need
who are having difficulty securing pet food in order to avoid pets being placed in shelters. Please bring food and supply donations to Legislator Anker’s office at 620 Route 25A, Suite B, in Mount Sinai. For more information or to schedule a drop-off, please call Legislator Anker’s office at (631) 854-1600.
Naturally Lowering Cholesterol (NAPSI)—If living a healthier life is your cup of tea, you may be interested in an easy way to improve your health—using the natural antioxidant powers of tea. Almost half of all Americans are overweight and have dangerously high levels of cholesterol. Heart attacks are still the No. 1 killer in the U.S. The problem is that high cholesterol and your risk
may be greater than you think. According to American Heart Association guidelines, the acceptable level of “bad cholesterol” is 30 percent lower than it used to be only a few years ago. This means that millions of Americans, including those who never dreamed they were at risk, now are. Fortunately, there are natural, nonprescription
alternatives for lowering cholesterol. For example, heart-healthy products such as TeaFlavin, an all-natural, caffeine-free capsule made from tea extract, contain as much cholesterol-fighting power as 35 cups of green tea. For more information on TeaFlavin, visit www. teaflavin.com or call (800) 876-4332.

Simple Ways To Prevent Dog-Related Lawn Damage
Dogs love spending time outdoors. Dog owners with yards know that dogs benefit greatly from some exercise in the backyard. While that time might be great for dogs, it can take its toll on lawns. Dog urine and feces can adversely affect the look and health of a lush green lawn. Nitrogen is essential to healthy soil, but only at certain levels. When those levels are exceeded, the result can be lawn damage. According to The Spruce Pets, an advisory site that offers practical tips and training advices to pet owners, this is what happens when pets frequently urinate on grass. Urine is naturally high in nitrogen, so when pets urinate on lawns, the grass might turn yellow or brown due to the excess nitrogen content. Nitrogen also is present in lawn fertilizers, further exacerbating the problem for pet owners who fertilize their lawns. In addition to urine damage, dogs can trample frosted grass, contributing to problems that may not become evident until spring, and get into areas like gardens where they wreak

5 Outdoor Projects That Add Value
Exterior renovations can enhance the appearance of a property and make it more enjoyable for homeowners. Certain renovations have the potential to add value to a home, while others may do the opposite. Learning which ones have the largest return on investments can help homeowners select features that will have the most positive impact. Curb appeal goes a long way toward attracting potential buyers. According to the National Association of Realtors, first impressions of a property have a strong influence on buyers. Landscaping and external features can do much to influence such impressions. • Lawn care program: Investing in a lawn care program that consists of small ones, but try to fertilizer and weed conbuild fenced-in areas that trol application and can allow dogs to run freely and get the exercise they need to stay healthy.

NAR says such a care program can recover $1,000 in value of the $330 average cost, or a 303 percent ROI. • Low-maintenance lifestyle: When choosing materials for projects, those that offer low-maintenance benefits can be preferential. These include low-maintenance patio materials, composite decking, vinyl fencing, and inorganic mulched beds. • Fire pit: A fire pit can be used for much of the year. In the spring and summer, the firepit is a great place to congregate to roast marshmallows or sip wine and gaze into the fire. In the fall, the fire pit can make for a cozy retreat. A fire pit that has a gas burner is low-maintenance, and the National Association of Landscape Profession-
als says that most can recoup about $4,000 of their $6,000 average price tag. • Softscaping: Hard-scaping refers to structures like outdoor kitchens or decks. Softscaping involves the living elements of the landscape. Hiring a landscape designer to install trees, shrubs, natural edging, and rock elements can do wonders toward improving the look and value of a home. • Pool or water feature: In certain markets, particularly hot climates, a pool or another water feature is a must-have. However, in other areas where outdoor time is limited, a pool or water feature can actually lower the value of a home. Speaking with a real estate professional can give homeowners an idea of how a pool will fare in a given neighborhood.

Few things can revitalize a home more readily than a fresh coat of paint. Thanks in part to the affordability of paint and its ease of application, painting is something that even novice DIYers can typically handle. According to the marketing advice guru Brandon Gaille, it is estimated that residential interior paint only lasts around three years before it needs to be updated. Exterior paint can fade, chip and peel due to various environmental factors. As a result, many homes can likely use a fresh coat of paint in at least one room. As DIY-friendly as painting can be, when attempting to paint the interior or exterior of their homes, homeowners may learn that some painting projects are best left to the professionals. Painting requires skill, patience and a knowledge of how various
paints — including finishes for particular applications — will hold up. Novice painters may do more harm than good by dripping paint on expensive carpeting or floors or fail to recognize the nuances that indicate a spoton painting job. Professional painters have spent hours upon hours learning the ropes of what works — and what does not. Painters often understand that painstaking preparatory work is crucial to getting pristine finished results. Walls and ceilings must be properly repaired and prepared even before a base coat is applied. Professional painters also have an eye for details. And because professional painters make a business out of doing interior and exterior surfaces, they understand which techniques can improve efficiency. That means a professional job can
typically be completed much more quickly than a DIY project. Even though some people think they’ll save money by painting their own homes, that’s not necessarily true. Professionals already have all the equipment necessary, unlike novices who may need to make repeated and potentially costly trips to the hardware store for supplies. Safety can be a large motivator for turning painting over to a pro. Navigating exterior areas or tall interior ceilings can be challenging and may require scaffolding or tall ladders DIYers do not have. Risk of falls or other injuries increase with lack of experience. Painting can give a home a facelift, and oftentimes it is smart to turn the work over to professionals to ensure the job is done just right.
What Causes Curled Shingles?
No homeowner wants to look at the exterior of his or her home and see roof damage. Such damage may lead homeowners to think they need a new roof, a potentially costly expense that can quickly throw household budgets into a state of disarray. According to the HomeAdvisor, the average homeowner spends a little more than $7,600 installing a new roof. Various factors, including the size of a home and the type of roof homeowners prefer, will affect the cost of a roof replacement. In addition, homeowners who see roof damage can rest assured that not all roof problems will necessarily require a replacement roof to be installed. Curled shingles are a problem many homeowners have encountered. This particular problem is not
always indicative that a roof is on its way out. In fact, the home improvement resource This Old House notes that as asphalt shingles age, their corners often begin to curl downward or upward. Homeowners who notice this early enough can glue down the curled section of each shingle. Some shingles may be curling because they’re defective. Fortified Roofing, a New Jersey-based roofing company that specializes in the repairing and replacing of various roofing configurations, advises homeowners to contact a local roofing professional to diagnose the cause of the curling. Doing so quickly can prevent curled shingles from contributing to more widespread damage. Moisture and poor ventilation may be contributing to curled shingles as well.
Homeowners with attics in their home may see curled shingles on their roofs because moisture is building up in their poorly ventilated attics. In addition to causing damage such as curled shingles, a poorly ventilated attic allows moisture to build up, potentially contributing to mold growth. Improper roof installation also may be the culprit behind curled shingles. When a roof is not installed correctly, shingles may not be aligned or nailed down in the right way. Curled shingles are unsightly and can pose a significant threat to a home if not addressed promptly. Homeowners can protect themselves and their roofs by working with skilled roofing professionals, who can diagnose issues like curled shingles and offer the right solutions.
reactions can manifest in persistent and/or excessive worry that prevents you from completing daily tasks, changes to energy levels, eating patterns and/or prolonged and overwhelming worry. Dr. Brenner strongly suggests that anyone experiencing unusual or atypical reactions that won’t subside in a short period of time seek professional mental health assistance. To reduce coronavirusrelated anxiety, there are several steps individuals can take. These include: • Find meaningful tasks and roles within your support network to channel your anxiety • Create spaces that are not focused on coronavirus. This could include a social media thread on other topics, or watching movies • Savor small positive moments, amplify positive stories and stay optimistic • Practice mindfulness when managing anxiety such as performing exercises and deep breathing. For those who wish to speak to a mental health professional, CHS
offers a host of services including Telepsychiatry, which improves access to psychiatric services for emergency department (ED) patients, particularly after normal office hours. The service is currently offered in the EDs of Mercy Medical Center in Rockville Centre, St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center in Smithtown and Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip. More information on CHS’s mental health services may be obtained by calling 1(855) CHS-4500. About Catholic Health Services CHS is an integrated system encompassing some of the region’s finest health and human services agencies. With 18,000 employees, 6 acute care hospitals, 3 nursing homes, a home nursing service, hospice, a community-based agency for persons with special needs and a network of physician practices, CHS’s high standards have resulted in a 24% market share.

As coronavirus continues to impact Long Islanders, growing health concerns along with the constant barrage of news is raising people’s anxiety. Catholic Health Services’s (CHS) mental health professionals offer ways we can reduce our stress during this time of uncertainty. This includes eating healthy, exercise, adequate sleep, virtually connecting with friends and family and reducing exposure to news and social media. “The constant flow of information related to coronavirus can become overwhelming,” said Catholic Health Services Chairman of Behavioral Health Ronald Brenner, MD. “It’s important to take a break and step away from media reports and the constant scrolling through social channels.” Anxiety is a normal response to a stressful situation and can inspire adaptive behavior in many situations. However, when facing mounting uncertainty, the brain can go into an anxiety spiral and cause atypical reactions. Knowing the body’s physical reactions to the different types of anxiety is important. Typical stress reactions can include temporary difficulty concentrating, irritability, fatigue, stomachache and difficulty sleeping. Atypical

How To Clean When Faced With A Shortage Of Supplies Continued From 16 can’t do its job. For those having trouble finding well-known cleaning agents, these alternatives may suffice. Hot Water And Soap The reason handwashing is at the top
of the list of sanitizing methods is because it is so effective at washing away viruses and bacteria. Friction from scrubbing with soap and water can help break the protective envelope, states the EPA. Soap
and water can clean all surfaces in a home, especially when applying a little extra elbow grease. Hydrogen Peroxide As people clear isopropyl (rubbing alcohol) off the shelves,
do not discount hydrogen peroxide. The CDC says household hydrogen peroxide at 3 percent concentration can deactivate rhinovirus, the virus that causes the common cold, within six to eight minutes of
contact. Coronavirus is easier to destroy than rhinovirus, so hydrogen peroxide may be effective at combatting that virus as well. Natural items can be used for general cleaning, but have not
been endorsed for use on COVID-19 disinfection. In lieu of shortages, white vinegar, baking soda pastes and citrus oils and juices could fill the void of chemicallybased cleansers for other home tasks.
