Seth Kalukeerthie, Julia Spadaro and Isis Vasquez, 7th graders at North Middle School and Katherine Hoya, a 5th grader at Laurel Park Elementary School, both in Commack, are four of nine Brentwood students - and more than 300 students from across Long Island - whose artwork was selected for the Long Island Museum’s Colors of Long Island exhibition in Stony Brook. Seth’s melted crayon piece titled Crayon Heart, Katherine’s crayon, pencil and pastel piece titled Me, Myself & Eye, and Isis and Julia’s string design titled Dream are on display in the museum’s Visitors Center from now through April 16th. Teachers in grades K through 12 from across Long Island were invited to submit up to three pieces to this annual exhibition, sponsored by Astoria Bank.

Kick the Habit To help residents quit smoking, the Town of Brookhaven will host the Suffolk County Department of Health’s six-week smoking cessation program beginning Tuesday, August 29th and continuing every Tuesday through October 3rd. Meetings will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the First Floor South Meeting Room at Brookhaven Town Hall, located at One Independence Hill in Farmingville. Attendees will learn the skills needed to be tobacco free, including techniques in stress management, behavioral modification and relaxation. Seeing the Signs By: Jamie Lynn Ryan

I’m always looking for signs. Except when I’m not, which makes them all the more poignant and undeniable. Case in point, the one year anniversary of my grandfather’s passing recently came and went on March 13th, bringing with it the anticipated mix of sadness and reflection that these milestones tend to create. Back on that day, one year ago, shortly after learning the devastating news, I stared blankly out my sliding glass door at the tree directly in front of my apartment, only to be met

with the gaze of one solitary robin. Sitting. Staring. I must have stood at that door for a solid half hour, mesmerized by this tiny bird, alone in a barren tree, his eyes fixated on me. Was it a sign? Was it just a matter of ironic timing? Who knows… I chose to find solace in the serenity of the moment, comfort in the quiet. A month later, we discovered a nest of four perfect robin’s eggs at my grandparents’ house, the first of its kind in that backyard, ever. We marveled at how it seemed to literally drop out of the sky at a most opportune moment, manifesting out of thin air,

a precious symbol that life does, in fact, go on. Fast forward to last week. I ran quickly to the store for a bunch of roses to bring to the cemetery, knowing that the impending “blizzard” and freezing temperatures would most likely destroy them in a matter of hours. As I headed back to the car, a sign for birdseed caught my eye. And then, it hit me. Suddenly, I heard chirping. Loud, incessant chirping. I turned around, searching for the source… and there it was, a single, solitary robin, sitting on the top of the pile. Some signs, you just don’t see coming.

On March 7th, Councilman Michael Logeurcio and the Brookhaven Youth Bureau held the first Free College Seminar Program at Brookhaven Town Hall. This event was so successful that there will be a second program planned for later this year. Approximately 100 residents participated as representatives from Suffolk County Community College (SCCC) discussed the college application process, financial aid and scholarship opportunities, and the various programs

Winning Decisions Three Village’s Mock Trial Team has completed its third straight undefeated regular season and is heading into the playoffs as the top seed in Suffolk County this March. Additionally, the team has had a remarkable run of 20 straight wins over three years in Suffolk County competition. The team is comprised of students from

both Ward Melville High School and P.J. Gelinas Junior High School. In addition to the team accomplishments, senior Isabelle Scott has just been named the first-place winner in the Federal Bar Association’s Inaugural Civics Essay Contest. As part of this honor, Isabelle was awarded a $2,000 scholarship

and has been invited to Washington, D.C. on an all-expenses-paid threeday trip to attend several conferences, the Thurgood Marshall Memorial Moot Court Competition finals, a private tour of the Supreme Court and meet with U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sotomayor.

Wall of Positivity

As part of the Miller Place School District’s ongoing Character Education initiatives, students at the Laddie A. Decker Sound Beach School recently created a wall of positivity outside the school’s cafeteria. The wall features a collage of colorful paper, each of which has a different positive message written by every teacher and student in the school. In addition, more than 600

students signed a pledge to “Start with Hello” and promote a positive culture of kindness. A full week of daily activities were planned around these important, simple, yet powerful messages. The purpose of this project was to bring smiles to the faces of students, teachers and staff members throughout the school. Not only did each student receive his or her own Post-It note to contribute

to the wall, many students also shared their positive messages with their friends. Examples of the positive Post-Its include: Make Everyone Smile; Everyone has something nice to do or say; If you can’t be a pencil to write someone’s happiness then be a nice eraser to remove their sadness; The word ‘impossible’ is really I’m possible and Never give up.

WALL OF POSITIVITY - Third, fourth and fifth grade students at the Laddie A. Decker Sound Beach School in the Miller Place School District recently signed a pledge to “Start with Hello” and try to make someone smile. They were participating in a District initiative to create a positive culture of inclusion.

A Little Thanks The Miller Place School District recently held an event at Laddie A. Decker Sound Beach School, giving third grade students an opportunity to show their appreciation for members of the United States Military, both veteran and serving active duty.

As part of the program, students in Ms. Brenner’s class created a care package for the teacher’s brother-in-law, U.S. Navy Petty Officer Joseph Monaco, who is currently deployed overseas in Mahe, Seychelles on the USS Comstock LSD-45. Ms. Brenner’s class

wrote thoughtful letters about the importance of servicemen and women and created a huge ‘Thank You’ poster. After receiving the package, Monaco thanked the class sent the students a picture of himself holding the poster.

Sharing a Love The Miller Place School District recently celebrated Read Across America Day with a Districtwide event to help students share their love of reading. Students at Miller Place High School used Skype, an online video communications service, to read age-appropriate books to elementary school

students at the Laddie A. Decker Sound Beach School. After reading the books, the high school students asked their elementary school audience what they thought about the stories. Laddie A. Decker Sound Beach School students then asked the high school students about the books

they used to read when they were younger and what kinds of books they enjoy reading now. This program was part of an ongoing Miller Place School District initiative intended to help students connect with their peers and develop high-level literacy skills from an early age.

SHARING A LOVE - Miller Place High School students come together in the school’s library to use Skype to read stories and share their love of reading with Laddie A. Decker Sound Beach School students. This event was part of a Miller Place School Districtwide celebration of Read Across America Day to help students connect with their peers and develop high-level literacy skills from an early age.

The Earl L. Vandermeulen High School girls basketball team made history on March 9th when they won the regional championship game against Haldane at SUNY Old Westbury.

The Royals, who ended the game with a final score of 43-30, headed to the state Final Four Championship on March 17th-19th in Troy. The win comes after the girls clinched the Long

Island Championship on March 6th. The Port Jefferson School District extends its congratulations to the athletes and wishes them the best at the state championships.

Music Camp Registration The Port Jefferson School District Music and Fine Arts Department is thrilled to announce that registration for the Summer Music Camp at Port Jefferson is now open. The summer music camp provides a unique opportunity for beginning and advanced students to start or continue their musical training while meeting new friends and playing music together. The camp offers several

levels of musical training classes, including ones for beginning band and string that allow students to start their musical experience prior to the upcoming school year. There are more advanced classes for current elementary and middle school band and string instrumentalists and a Little Maestros program for students in grades 1 and 2. The camp operates for three weeks from July

10-27 with times varying depending on experience levels. The fee is $100 per student for the Little Maestros program and $175 for all other students. Headed to States at the state tournament, which will be held in early April in the Syracuse area. Out of the 33 teams represented during the regional competition, Gelinas’ three teams placed first, third and fourth and Murphy’s three teams placed second, fifth and 10th.

New Tech In conjunction with the district’s commitment to enhancing technology educational opportunities for students, Rocky Point High School recently hosted an in-house field trip with representatives

from NYIT. The school’s engineering, computer aided design, drawing design productions and world of technologies classes got an up-close look at several new

World of Physics Rocky Point High School’s AP physics class taught by Jack Nielsen took an up-close look at some of the concepts they are learning during a recent trip to Adelphi University. During their visit, the students took a tour through the physics

department and met with current Adelphi physics students and professors. The hosting professionals gave many different demonstrations related to the subject, such as experimentally determining the speed of light, exploring the

effects of polarization, and demonstrations of research in laser technology. The trip was a great opportunity for students to see the application of physics, and how they can further expand on their knowledge after high school.

P.J. Gelinas Junior High School art teacher Mike Sacco was one of a select few educators chosen to present at this year’s National Art Educator Association Conference, held this March in New York City. Out of the 2,200 art

teachers who applied to present, Mr. Sacco was selected to not only share one but two of his exemplar lessons before some of the more than 7,000 art educators in attendance. Mr. Sacco’s session introduced two Photoshop design projects

featured in SchoolArts Magazine: “The Selfie Project” and “Altered To Kill a Mockingbird.” These projects showcase student creativity, contain clear learning objectives, and yield impressive results. Lesson introduction, procedure and assessment were all also covered. The NAEA National Convention is an annual event providing substantive professional development services that include the advancement of knowledge in all sessions, events and activities for the purpose of improving visual arts instruction in American schools. As such, it is the world’s largest art education convention.

Powerful Speaker R.C. Murphy Junior High School seventh-grade students recently learned about the inspiring Ride for Life movement and the disease at the center of the mission when ALS patient, Dr. Christopher Pendergast and former educator, Glenn Baldwin conducted an inspiring assembly program. During the assembly, the

students got an overview of the illness and challenges that patients face. Additionally, Mr. Baldwin and Dr. Pendergast also helped the students to apply the lessons learned from patients living with ALS to their own personal challenges. They were encouraged to keep working at achieving their goals even when something

Penguin Study As part of their multiweek study, Rocky Point’s Frank J. Carasiti Elementary School firstgrade students in Jennifer Meschi’s class showcased their knowledge of penguins through written and visual forms. Throughout the lesson, the students learned about the 17 different

types of penguins and wrote nonfiction books about a specific type. They used different sources to complete their research and shared information about how they move, their size and what they look like. Additionally, the students had the chance to observe penguins via a live webcam.

The students’ Parade of Penguins, including life size drawings of the different types of penguins, was displayed outside of their classroom and the class enjoyed celebrating their achievements by dressing like penguins on “Penguin Day.”

In keeping with their slogan, “multiply the good,” Ridgewood Savings Bank has again teamed up with the New York Islanders, pledging to donate $10 to local charities for every save made by an Islanders goalie this season. So far, past the halfway point in the season, the “Save with Ridgewood” sponsorship has led to nearly $20,000 in

donations. “The Islanders goalies have made 1,999 saves, as of today,” said Leonard Stekol, Ridgewood Bank’s President and COO, “which means we’re on pace for donating more than $20,000 again this year.” “With the funds raised so far, we’ve donated $10,000 to the Prospect Park Alliance for its free “Sticks and Skates

Guest of Honor Stony Brook University will recognize the 47th Vice President of the United States of America, the Honorable Joseph R. Dance Honors Another milestone was celebrated at Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) when its first cohort of students was inducted into the National Honor Society for Dance Arts (NHSDA) in February. The seven students from throughout Long Island were recognized not only for their skill on the dance floor but also for their academic achievements and leadership. The inductees were Tara Durkin (Massapequa UFSD), Jason Fauser (Northport-East Northport UFSD), Alexandra Ferrugia (Massapequa UFSD), Madison McGrath (Massapequa UFSD), Rose Ozimkowski (NorthportEast Northport UFSD), Aliyah Petrone (Massapequa UFSD), Jared Stern (Levittown UFSD) and Sydney Weltman (Bellmore-Merrick CHSD). “These are high-achieving students with evolving artistry and a genuine interest in so many areas of the arts,” said LIHSA’s lead dance teacher Dina DenisPaolucci, who spearheaded the efforts to achieve this national recognition for her students. “I’m really proud of all of you,” she told the students. “This is a huge accomplishment for our program.” The students were directly involved in the development of the LIHSA chapter of the NHSDA and helped plan their own induction ceremony. They also elected chapter officers – President Jared Stern, Vice

Seeking Volunteers North Shore Land Alliance, a local land trust, is seeking high school students, retirees, educators, nature enthusiasts, youth groups and community-minded businesses to help protect and steward the beautiful areas in our communities. These areas safeguard our air and water supplies, provide wildlife habitat and create places for people of all ages to play, learn and connect with nature. The Land Alliance is very fortunate to work with more than 200 volunteers who contribute 1,000 hours of community service annually. That time, valued at approximately $30,000, provides support for land conservation projects and educational programs. Volunteers assist with a variety of efforts including trail restoration, invasive species management and plant and wildlife monitoring, just to name a few. They also assist with community outreach, fundraising events, office

work and membership mailings. Local educators and naturalists share their expertise with the Land Alliance community by leading their guided the Walks in Woods and helping to educate more than 3,400 school children through their Long Island Water Education Program. The money was donated to the Long Island Cares/ Harry Chapin Food Bank, which has been serving the hungry on Long Island since 1980. King Kullen CoPresident Brian C. Cullen, who founded King Kullen in 1930.” In 1997, King Kullen was the first supermarket chain to participate in the annual “Check Out Hunger” campaign, a unique partnership between Long Island Cares and the shopping community in which customers can make a donation with a coupon when checking out at the supermarket register. Family Service League (FSL), a Long Island based non-profit human service organization, is pleased to announce the grant award of $25,000 from The Nature’s Bounty Foundation, a 501c3 that is the charitable arm of The Nature’s Bounty Co. The mission of The Nature’s Bounty Foundation believes in enhancing lives and giving back to the communities locally and around the world. This generous grant will support FSL’s Brentwood Community School (BCS) After-School Program where students will be given the opportunity to learn about nutrition through the hands–on experience of preparing healthy meals though cooking classes. The FSL’s BCS students and their families benefit from the availability of on-site

academic enrichment through the arts and a variety of cultural programs. The goal is to increase student’s success in school by adding resources known to make a difference: increased parental involvement in their children’s education, enhanced learning opportunities through educational enrichment, linguistically sensitive programs, consistent adult guidance, and access to health, dental and mental health services. “At The Nature’s Bounty Foundation, we believe that overall wellness is attainable by everyone,” said Michael Oliveri, Chairman of The Nature’s Bounty Foundation. “We are committed to providing resources that support people on that path. Teaching children about nutrition is such a valuable

way to help bring wellness into the home, and back to family members.
