The Suffolk County Legislature has unanimously approved legislation to make discounted golf fees for veterans and active military personnel permanent. This resolution, sponsored by Deputy Presiding Officer Jay Schneiderman (I-Montauk), expands the pilot program which was set to expire on March 11th, 2014. In 2012, Legislator S c h n e i d e r m a n introduced legislation which established a pilot program to charge military veterans golfing fees equivalent to those paid by senior citizens. Since the implementation of this fee structure approximately 1,000 veterans or active military personnel have played a round of golf at Suffolk County courses. “Members of

the military serve to protect the freedoms of this country,” says Deputy Presiding Officer Jay Schneiderman. “This is one small way we can show our appreciation to the men and women of the armed forces.” “I support Deputy Presiding Officer Schneiderman’s legislation authorizing reduced fees for our veterans at county golf courses,” said Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory. “The pilot program was a great success and many of our veterans took advantage of the reduced fees. I am in favor of anything we can do to support the veterans who protect our freedom every day.” Suffolk County Parks contains four golf courses which include Indian Island Golf Course in Riverhead, Bergen Point

Golf Course in Babylon, Timber Point Golf Course in Great River and the West Sayville Golf Course. Each golf course is open from mid-March through December and is staffed by a PGA professional, a driving range, a practice green and a full service restaurant and catering facility. This legislation now moves to Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone for his signature. Suffolk County Veterans can contact the Parks Department at 631.854.4949 or go to Suffolk County Park locations where green keys are sold with proper proof of residency; veterans must submit DD Form 214 (Certificate of release or Discharge from Active Duty) or Suffolk County Veteran Resident ID card issued by Suffolk County Veterans Agency.

Last Sunday, as my family was gathering for spaghetti and meatballs, we received a phone call from my grandmother. She sounded noticeably different. We could tell that something was wrong because her voice was shaky, and she did not offer the usual pleasantries. After a few minutes of crying, she told us that her cat had passed away. She loved that cat for the twenty-something years that it was around, and during the last few days, she could sense that something was wrong. I anticipated that she would be inconsolable,

because she truly cared about her precious feline. We were devastated as well, until we got another call. It was my uncle. He had great news. His wife was pregnant and they were expecting a baby. We never expected him to have kids, even though he seemed to love them. It was a welcomed shock to us, and even more needed for my grandmother. She had lost a cat, but had also potentially gained a grandchild. It seemed as if this baby was coming to fill and exceed the gap left by the animal’s passing. Advancing To Championship

In its inaugural year, the Rocky Point High School Robotics Team – Quantum Chaos – has earned a spot to compete in this year’s New York City/Long Island Championship Tournament on March 8th at the Polytechnic University of New York University. Rocky Point qualified to compete in this contest after securing second place for the Inspire award against 20 other teams in the FTC Qualifying Tournament at Syosset High School. The Inspire award is given to the team that truly embodied the challenge of the FTC program and represented a role model FTC team. The Inspire award winner is an inspiration to other teams, acting with

gracious professionalism both on and off the playing field. This team is able to communicate their experiences, enthusiasm and knowledge to other teams, sponsors and the judges. Working as a unit, this team demonstrated success in accomplishing the task of creating a working and competitive robot. “I am absolutely thrilled and incredibly proud of these students,” said team coach and Rocky Point teacher Dorothy Burns. “They have worked so hard and put in a tremendous amount of time and effort.” The team prepares for these competitions at their weekly meetings, during which they have learned not only how to construct a robot based on the FTC’s

specific requirements, but also how to develop computer programs to control the movements of their creation. During the competition, the students’ robot earns a varying number of points for each task it can complete – including moving blocks into containers to suspending from a bar atop a ramp. Although it must be able to navigate through complex challenges, its design elements are limited based on the competition specifications – it must fit into an 18-inch cube, although it can grow in size during the two-and-ahalf minute competition.

National Honors Earned

Fifteen Ward Melville High School seniors have been named finalists in the 2014 National Merit Scholarship Program. These academically talented seniors were first honored as semifinalists earlier this year based on their Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test results – a test that serves as an initial screening of approximately 1.5 million entrants each year ¬– and by meeting

published program entry/participation requirements. As finalists, the seniors will have the opportunity to continue in the competition for some 8,000 National Merit Scholarships worth approximately $32 million. Elementary school students throughout the Three Village Central School marked the 100th day of school in creative ways this year. At Arrowhead, kindergarten students created a museum comprised of 100 day inspired projects. Working with their families, the students fashioned creative artwork out of 100 everyday objects, including balloons, food items and toys. Incorporating their math skills, the students practiced counting to 100 while creating necklaces made of 100 Fruit Loops

and balancing 100 different objects on a scale and determining which weighed more. They also created colorful 100 day hats. W.S. Mount Elementary School kindergartners in Dawn McNally’s class celebrated in a similar fashion – creating necklaces out of 100 Fruit Loops or Cheerios and creating hats with 10 sections of 10 pictures. Other classes at Mount celebrated by creating projects using the number 100, which were displayed in the building’s showcase. In addition to

AP Bio Visit Earl L. Vandermeulen High School students in Greg Gorniok’s AP Biology class recently traveled to the Biotechnology Teaching Center at SUNY Stony Brook’s Center for Science and Math Education to conduct a hands-on learning experience in biotechnology. “Students genetically

engineered bacteria through transformation with plasmid DNA,” said Gorniok. “They learned techniques used to insert genes from jellyfish and sea anemones into bacteria. The transformed bacteria were then able to produce proteins, which made them glow.” The lab activity

Mini-College Fair emphasized experimental design and applications of biotechnology in various industries, such as medicine, agriculture and environmental cleanup. Recent scientific breakthroughs in molecular biology research and their social implications were also discussed.

On March 11th, the Earl L. Vandermeulen High School guidance department hosted 95 colleges and universities at its spring mini-college fair for its sophomore and junior classes. The school hosts two fairs per academic year, beginning with a fall session for juniors and

seniors, to help students gather information about a particular school prior to visiting or applying for admission. “Students are able to ask the college representatives questions about the schools and see what programs are offered,” said Earl L. Vandermeulen High School guidance staff

member Rose Darling. “This works in conjunction with the meetings the guidance counselors have with their students when discussing and applying to colleges. Sometimes students will find they have an interest in a school they didn’t even know about.”

Words Have Consequences

Suffolk County Police Officer (SCPO) Nancy Ward visited Eastern Long Island Academy of Applied Technology, at the Ward Technical Center in Riverhead, to present a PoliceSmart Cyberbullying workshop to high school students. Ward incorporated copyright infringement and plagiarism into her presentation at the request of the teachers. The primary focus of the presentation was on sexting and the many causes for doing it. Sexting is the act of sending sexually explicit messages, revealing photos or videos electronically, primarily between mobile phones and computers. “Students may engage in sexting because of peer pressure, impulsiveness, revenge, boyfriend/girlfriend issues, blackmail, or to flirt and get attention,” said Ward. The problem is that the pictures never go away. She said that everyone lives with saying or doing something they regret, but taking a picture and sharing it, “Well, you can never take it back,” said Ward. “It’s out there in

cyberspace and someday it may resurface and it could potentially destroy your chance for a job or a career opportunity.” Students enrolled in the Academy are acquiring skills that will make them career and college ready. The workshop was offered to help guide students to think and act appropriately and to be responsible and do the right thing. Nancy Ward has been a police officer for 21 years but began her career as a teacher. She combined the two experiences and has been giving PoliceSmart presentations to nine school districts across Long Island and Eastern Suffolk BOCES for 13 years. She said, “I love to teach and I want to help kids to make better choices. They need to understand that phones have power and indiscretions can be destructive.” Technology can be addictive, and sending words and inappropriate pictures can have consequences. Ward said, “Everyone needs to think before hitting that send button.” A human being can only

be pushed down so much with words like stupid, dumb, and ugly. Words can chip away at a person’s selfesteem and those words may start to label people. Labels are like tattoos that can’t be removed. “Cyberbullying can escalate to harassment, defamation, and ultimately be a criminal act,” said PO Ward. Suicide rates, especially violent suicides, have increased, and that is cause for concern. “Unfortunately,” Ward said, “suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem.” Student, Rodrigo Calderon, MattituckCutchogue UFSD, and adult student William Krakehl from the Academy’s Auto Tech Program, stayed after to speak to SCPO Ward about taking the police exam. When asked about the Cyberbullying presentation, they said it was beneficial and agreed that a person, who hides behind a computer or phone, and sends inappropriate texts or pictures, is a coward. They agreed that ‘it takes courage to say no’.

Consumers Should Take Advantage Of Free Credit Reports (NAPSI)—The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) found that many consumers are overwhelmed by the amount of information available to help them learn more about the financial services marketplace. At the same time, the CFPB found one of the most popular resources offered is information about credit reports.

The credit bureaus have found that information about credit reports is popular as well. “Each year, there are over 25 million free credit reports provided to consumers,” said Stuart K. Pratt, president and CEO of the Consumer Data Industry Association. “And while that’s a significant number, there are still a considerable number of consumers who aren’t exercising their option

to get their report. According to a survey done by VantageScore and the Consumer Federation of America, 37 percent of consumers have never obtained a copy of their credit report,” he added. Consumers can get a free credit report from each of the three nationwide credit bureaus, Equifax, Experian and TransUnion, once a year by going to www.

annualcreditreport.com. The process is easy and enables consumers to have real-time access to their credit reports. “Many people get annual medical checkups. The American Red Cross has awarded a $599,655 grant to the Health & Welfare Council of Long Island to support a disaster recovery center for nonprofits and volunteers who will help hundreds of homeowners affected by Superstorm Sandy repair their damaged homes. The funding will be used to house 150 volunteers at the new Long Island Disaster Recovery Center on the New York Institute of Technology campus in Central Islip. Without the grant, these volunteers would not be able to access housing while they work to repair 600 Sandy-damaged homes throughout Nassau and Suffolk Counties over the year to come. The funding will also be used to coordinate non-profit and volunteer efforts - such as mucking, gutting and debris removal - and operate the disaster recovery and housing facility. The center will serve as the command center for rebuildingrelated activities by Long Island long term recovery groups, and will include a kitchen, warehouse, office spaces and meeting rooms. “Over the past year, the American Red Cross has repeatedly demonstrated its commitment to helping the most vulnerable on Long Island recover from the devastation of Superstorm Sandy,” said

LI Builders Expo This year’s Long Island Builder’s Institute Builders Expo will truly be a home show. The show, the only expo on Long Island that attracts the pros, this year will feature some of Long Island’s biggest homebuilders who will exhibit their newest projects – both for sale and rentals. The show takes place March 26th, from 3 to 8 p.m. at the Hilton Long Island, 598 Broadhollow Rd., Melville. Sponsored by the Islandia-based Long Island Builders Institute’s (LIBI), the show is open to the public and the trade.

Admission is free to the show and for five public seminars. This year marks the show’s 24th year. A seminar on energy efficiency envelopes for building and real estate industry professionals offering CEU credits is limited to the trade and will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The cost of this seminar is $40, which includes lunch. “This year’s expo is designed to introduce residents of Long Island to our local homebuilding and contracting community in a manner that will strengthen confidence

in working relationships and in knowing the best contractors on Long Island are the ones who are on the job,” said Lois, Fricke, director of operations at LIBI, the region’s homebuilders trade group. Among the developers offering the public a first chance to see their new projects are Avalon Bay Communities, which has apartment communities under development is several Long Island communities; Engel Burman Group, which is planning a 55-plus community in Seaford and new assisted living

facilities in Lake Grove and Farmingville; and Tritec Real Estate Co., which is constructing the New Village at Patchogue luxury apartments as well as projects in Port Jefferson and the Ronkonkoma Hub. Also among the hundred participating exhibitors are contractors for any kind of project, kitchen and bath suppliers, building material suppliers offering green products, flooring dealers, landscapers, security device suppliers, appliance dealers and interior designers. A multitude of real estate and related service

professionals also will be on hand to offer advice. They include residential brokers, bankers, mortgage bankers and insurance brokers In addition to the exhibitors, the show will feature various free seminars for the public and the trade focusing on such topics as energy efficiency and new home technology. On February 26th, School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI), along with Farmingdale State College, presented its annual Fred Breithut Scholarship Breakfast Fundraiser at the college’s Campus Center. The admission suggested a donation of $30 that went towards the scholarship, which was awarded to Adam Lopez, Farmingdale State College Freshman, and a graduate of Longwood High School. At the event, guests enjoyed breakfast while listening to speakers, such as Joani Madarash, Executive Director, SBPLI; Dr. Hubert Keen, President of Farmingdale State College; Dr. Henry Sikorski, Chief Development Officer, Farmingdale State College; Dr. Lorraine Greenwald, Dean of International Education and Programs,

Farmingdale State College; and Gordon Canary, District Office Manager, New York State Senator Phil Boyle’s office. When Mr. Lopez approached the podium, he expressed his gratitude for the scholarship and explained his passion for engineering and business, which led him to double major in Mechanical Engineering Technology and Business. The scholarship, which was created in 2009, in honor of Fred Breithut, Founder of SBPLI, is awarded to an incoming Farmingdale State College student who has participated in SBPLI’s FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics programs and meets the eligibility requirements for the scholarship. The student receives $1,000 for each semester he/ she attends the college

(maximum of eight semesters). Mr. Breithut sadly passed away in 2010, and it has become even more important for SBPLI to keep this scholarship intact due to his love and admiration for students. The scholarship truly represents what Mr. Breithut supported: to further the education of the youth on Long Island. “We are thrilled to award this scholarship to Adam Lopez,” says Ms. Madarash. “He has dedicated a great deal of his time to SBPLI programs and has learned so much. We are confident that he will succeed throughout his four-years at Farmingdale State College. Not only did he express his emotions, but he offered helpful tips and insights pertaining to his personal caregiving. After the keynote, guests enjoyed more breakout sessions, an ice cream social, and a plenary session showing/ screening of the film The Genius of Marian. The movie presented the filmmaker’s mother, Pam White, through her early stages of Alzheimer’s Disease. The film’s producer, Banker White, appeared via Skype after the film to answer any questions that attendees might have had.
