Meet Mary Jaffe, Potter The Reboli Center’s Artisan of the Month – March 2021

The Reboli Center for Art & History is pleased to name Mary Jaffe as its artisan of the month for March. “Mary is known for her handmade functional ceramics. Her pottery has such clean and
elegant lines, which are reflective of the landscapes of the east end where Mary lives and works in Bridgehampton. Her work is beautiful and inspiring,” said Lois Reboli, founder of the Reboli Center and wife of the late renowned artist, Joseph Reboli, for whom the center is named. Mary earned her BFA in Ceramics from Long Island University in Southampton, NY. She did post graduate studies at the Instituto Allende in Mexica, the Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina, and a five-year apprenticeship at a production pottery studio. For the past 20 years, Mary has been teaching children’s pottery workshops in her local community and at the Clay Art Guild in Watermill, NY. According to Mary, “As a studio potter, I am continually experimenting with and exploring the
subtle properties and abilities of the material. I specialize in wheel-thrown pottery with inspiration from the horizontal lines of the landscape and natural forms of seashells and gourds. The finished works are reflective of the process, where the softness and fluidity of the raw clay is expressed in shape and texture. On occasion,
I explore altered forms in collaboration with my artist husband.” Mary Jaffe’s pottery is for sale in the Reboli Center’s Design Shop. The Center is free, and open Tuesday – Saturday from 11am – 5pm and Sunday from 1pm - 5pm. Masks must be worn, and social distancing is required. For more information on the Artisan of the Month, please call the Reboli Center at 631751-7707. Lois Reboli, president of the Reboli Center, noted that, “The Center is adhering to CDC, New York State and Suffolk County coronavirus guidelines, which limits the number of attendees at one time and requires all visitors to wear a mask and socially distance. Please be assured that staff and volunteers will wear masks, and do continuous cleaning and sanitizing.”
Port Jefferson Students Celebrate Read Across America Day Edna Louise Spear Elementary School students joined thousands of schools nationwide to celebrate Read Across America Day and the birthday of renowned author Dr. Seuss on March
2. This year’s festivities were a bit different from years past but didn’t stop school librarian Selinda Stout from encouraging students to continue their love of reading. Students in kindergarten
through second grade received goodie bags with gift cards from Applebee’s and Panera Bread and a special visit from a favorite character, The Cat in the Hat, aka Principal Amy Laverty.

T h e Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations. Since the organization’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued. To date, the Twilight Wish Foundation has granted over 3,700 wishes throughout our country and multiple wishes have being granted on Long Island recently! These wishes have ranged from simple needs wishes, such as shaving razors for nursing home veterans, to living life to the fullest wishes, such as going cross country in a tractor trailer truck. Recently, many Long Island residents had their wishes come true. Each week for the remaining weeks this month, I will feature wishes that were granted right here on Long Island, starting with Kathy W. Dorothy Delia is an 87 year old resident of West Babylon. She worked and volunteered for the Salvation Army in Ridegewood and Queens for over 20 years. Prior to COVID, she was very involved in her church by coordinating the prayer chain, greeting worshippers and helping at fundraisers and events. Dorothy desperately needed dental work, but because she lives on a fixed income, she could not afford it on her own. She had been losing teeth and could only eat soft foods. She wished for dental work, which was granted! In February 2020, she got a new healthy smile! Many seniors experience social isolation, which can lead to undesirable
conditions. Granting a Twilight Wish can help change that! You can qualify for a Twilight Wish if you are at least 65 years old, are a legal U.S. citizen, demonstrate financial need, provide a history of giving back to others and possess the cognitive, emotional and physical ability to experience the wish. Please note, when going to grant a wish, this foundation takes all the necessary safety precautions. If you would like to get involved with The Twilight Wish Foundation, you can! Identity Theft Prevention Tips (NAPSI)-A recent online survey by Toluna/Greenfield Online, Inc. found that while most consumers try to protect their identity, many admitted to risky behavior that could put them at risk for ID theft. To help educate and protect consumers, world-renowned fraud prevention expert Frank Abagnale offers these tips: • Shop smart: Limit the credit cards you carry. •Keep receipts and check
your statements: Examine every charge on your statement before paying. Your receipts provide a great cross-reference check and guard against suspicious activity. You have 30 days from the date of your statement to notify your financial institution of any discrepancies; otherwise, you can be liable for any purchases. • Protect your computer when online shopping: Make
sure your security patch and anti-virus software are updated regularly. Consider technology to protect against potential viruses. • Watch where you shop online: Look for the lock icon on the site’s browser status bar, a sign that that site is safe. If you have never heard of a website before, see if it has security precautions in place and isn’t a fake site set up by identity thieves. •Don’t write checks:
Give cash or gift cards. St. Patrick’s Day is made special by various traditions. Everything from dyeing major cities’ rivers green to parades to enjoying green foods has become part of the pageantry of St. Patrick’s Day. The next time you raise a green beer to your lips, you may wonder which traditions are authentically Irish and which ones were created by regions with an abundance of Irish emigrants. Surprisingly, many seemingly Irish traditions likely began elsewhere. First parade It would be accurate to assume that various elements associated with St. Patrick’s Day began where St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, once resided, including the first St. Patrick’s Day parade. However, some of the first parades held in St. Patrick’s honor took place in two North American cities, New York and Boston, that had high numbers of Irish immigrants, but historians say the first ever St. Patrick’s Day parade was actually held in St. Augustine, Florida in 1601, a year after gunfire blasts were used to honor the saint. The parade may have been at the request of an Irish priest living there at the time. Corned beef and cabbage What would St. Patrick’s Day be without an authentic meal of corned beef and cabbage? This dish is not so authentic after all, and actually is an American innovation. Ham and cabbage was widely eaten in Ireland, but corned beef was a cheaper alternative found in America by immigrants. Therefore, corned beef became a staple of poor Irish immigrants living in lower Manhattan. The salted meat was boiled three times to remove

Days before Valentine’s Day, second graders in Frank J. Carasiti Elementary School set out on a mission to share their thoughts and creativity in appreciation of the country’s veterans. Students cut out red paper hearts, pasted doilies, fashioned paper heart-shaped fish and wrote heartfelt messages on
their handcrafted greetings throughout the grade level to share their respect and admiration in a colorful collection of cards. Each class chose a different theme, discussed ways veterans protect the country and spoke about what they could write in their cards to thank the individuals for

Rocky Point School District Boasts Two National Merit Finalists
The Rocky Point School District announced two National Merit finalists in the annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Rocky Point High School students Ashlynne Xavier and Alexander Zaslavsky took the qualifying test as
juniors and are now among approximately 15,000 high school students nationwide who were awarded the distinction. In the next several months, approximately half of those students will be selected to receive a Merit Scholarship
award, which is based on their abilities, skills and accomplishments. The students’ finalist designation exemplifies the district’s academically rigorous program for all students.
WITH LOVE AND APPRECIATION - Second graders in Frank J. Carasiti Elementary School set out on a mission to share their thoughts and creativity in appreciation of the country’s veterans.
