he Miller Place School District celebrated its 100th day of school recently at Andrew Muller Primary School. Teachers honored the event by creating fun activities with the number 100 throughout the day as an opportunity for students to practice their concept of numbers, counting, measuring and sorting. In addition to the driving stations, participants also took part in two stationary courses that called for them to complete actions while wearing impairment goggles. “The SADD Club took the initiative to bring this program to Rocky Point High School because our members felt that raising awareness about the dangers of driving under the influence and distracted driving can reduce the number of deaths and save lives,” said SADD Club adviser Serina Werthner. “Our hope is that they will remember what they learned from the experience and make the right decisions next time
they are driving or with someone who is.” “This program really made you realize how dangerous distracted driving can be,” commented 10th-grader Megan Johannesen. “People are not lying when they say taking your eyes off the road for even one second can hurt someone,” added 10th grader Lauren Utting. The event was funded through a Teen Driver Safety Grant provided to the Town of Brookhaven Traffic Safety Department, a Division of the Town of Brookhaven Highway Department, by the governors’ traffic safety committee.
The Ward Melville High School literary magazine, Cinnabar, advised by Lisa Rochford, received the highest award during the 2015 National Council of Teachers of English Excellence in Student Literary Magazine contest. They received the highest recognition in all of New York State. The magazine’s 2015 edition, Attic, was judged
against the 355 entries submitted nationwide. Only 24 publications received the highest award. NCTE’s Program to Recognize Excellence in Student Literary Magazines (PRESLM) recognizes students, teachers and schools for producing excellent literary magazines. The program’s mission is to encourage all schools to develop literary

To help drive home the dangers of distracted and impaired driving, Rocky Point High School SADD Club recently helped coordinate a Town of Brookhaven Teen Driver Safety Program at the school. During the program, students attempted to navigate electric go-carts through two driving obstacle courses set up in the gymnasium. The first course involved goggles meant to visually simulate driving under the influence and the second called for participants to attempt to text while driving. While navigating through both courses, students were challenged not to disrupt any safety cones placed

Drug Free Forum Recognizing that teen drug use is an ongoing concern not only in communities throughout the country but locally as well, the Rocky Point School District will host an informative Drug Free Community Forum on Tuesday, April 5th, at 7 p.m. in the Rocky Point High School auditorium. The event will provide the results of a recent survey taken by Rocky
Point students and compare those selfreported answers against what their peers are experiencing nationwide. Additionally, attendees will hear from John Venza, vice president of Adolescent Services for OUTREACH, who will provide an eye opening presentation about drug use across Long Island, signs to watch for, where to get help and so much more. To support
the effort, several groups will be on hand to provide reading materials and informative resources to take home. The district encourages all parents with children in grades K-12 and students in grades 6-12 to attend this program to learn more about this topic including the district students’ report on this matter.
On February 26th, over two hundred guests joined togetehr as the Town of Brookhaven’s Black History Commission hosted its 25th Annual Celebration at Town Hall. The evening’s program included the presentation of Academic Achievement Awards to Brookhaven’s top 51 African-American high school seniors from 10 school districts who
achieved a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher. (pictured). The theme of this year’s Black History Month Celebration was “Hallowed Grounds: Sites of African American Memories.” The evening included an interpretive dance performance of “Glory” by Autumn Lesley; the unveiling of the 39th Black Heritage Series Postage
Stamp depicting Richard Allen, founder of the African Methodist Episcopal Church; a cultural drum performance by Edwina Tyler and a choral selection by Kirsandra Seaton. Brookhaven Town Councilwoman Valerie M. Cartright, the first woman of African American descent to serve on the Town Board, was this year’s honoree.

Moving Day It finally arrived, my very own upgraded home, complete with a filter, a light, a brand new silk plant, pretty gravel…everything a betta as particular as myself could possibly ask for! While not exactly a birthday present (I spied my Human hiding it under the Christmas tree a few months back), I had the pleasure of moving in just a couple weeks ago after my “one-year-in-the-bowl” festivities. I have to admit, I was a little apprehensive once I saw the setup; nothing like my tiny travel bowl, which was perfect for joining my Human and her family at the dining room table for dinner or on the coffee table for prime television viewing. No, this one-gallon estate is much better suited for its stationary spot on the kitchen counter – although I hear it can be unplugged and
relocated easily enough, you know, in case there happens to be anything good on Animal Planet. And my plant, I can’t say enough about its lengthy silk leaves, which create the perfect spot to curl up on and nap at any time of the day or night. No more frayed fins for this betta! This plant is smooth sailing, allowing me to flit to and fro and wedge myself in between its fronds without doing any further damage to my lovely physique. These days, the Human tends to feed me twice a day, once before she leaves for work in the morning and again when she returns home in the evening – just a few flakes each time (I do have to maintain my figure after all). I am having a bit of trouble navigating around the filter though, as it tends to blow my precious meal clear across the tank just as I have it within my grasp. What a workout!
I suppose that explains why I’ve been napping quite a bit more lately, either on my favorite leaf or wedged in the corner of my tank, face pressed against the glass, floating above the gravel. Plus, this new light is great for exploring when I’m home alone, doing my daily laps and combing the bottom for any rogue flakes that may have escaped – exhausting stuff. When the Human says “lights out,” she means it. Bedtime for Buddy! I look forward to spending the next chapter of my life in this beautiful new environment. Thanks to those readers who continue to check in on my livelihood and compliment my columns. I’ve even been told a book deal should be forthcoming! Earth Day Poster Contest Supervisor Ed Romaine has announced that the Town of Brookhaven will sponsor the first annual “Earth Day Challenge” poster contest. Those who participate in the challenge are asked to create a poster with one unique earth friendly message. Every poster submitted will be displayed for public viewing on Saturday, April 23rd, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at West Meadow Beach on Trustees Road (past the white gate) in Setauket.

Earth Day, which falls every year on April 22nd, was founded in 1970 by Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson as a day of education about environmental issues. It is now celebrated around the world by more than one billion people in order to raise public awareness about environmental issues. Earth Day is considered the largest secular civic event in the world.

Friends of St. Patrick HONORED FOR SERVICE - At the February 25th Town Board Meeting, Councilwoman Jane Bonner presented a Certificate of Appreciation to Ms. Maureen Pouder in recognition for her service to the Arthur H. Clune Post 1522 of the American Legion of Mastic Beach. Recently, Ms. Pouder restored an old, rusted U.S. mailbox to be used for the collection of unserviceable American flags which will be properly disposed of on Flag Day every year.
DEDICATION CEREMONY - On February 26th, Councilwoman Jane Bonner attended the dedication ceremony to welcome Rocky Point residents Tom and Susan Sullivan back to their “extreme makeover” house, thanks to Habitat for Humanity Suffolk. Mr. Sullivan is a veteran and original member of the popular vocal group, Johnny Maestro and the Brooklyn Bridge. His home suffered severe damage during Superstorm Sandy. Veterans from American Legion Smith-Weaver Post 651 of Sayville volunteered their time to do much of the work. The reconstruction was started in October of 2015.
On March 6th, the annual Friends of St. Patrick Cocktail Dinner Party was held at East Wind Caterers in Wading River. They were there to honor the newly crowned Queen and Royal Court, and Grand Marshal for the 66th Annual Miller PlaceRocky Point St. Patrick’s Day Parade. This year’s Queen is Samantha Wooley of Rocky Point and her Ladies
in Waiting are Emma Sweeney from Miller Place and Janice Pearson from Port Jefferson Station. The parade Grand Marshal is Rocky Point resident, business owner and current Friends of St. Patrick’s president John Barchi. The Miller PlaceRocky Point St. Patrick’s Day Parade has a rich history that dates back to 1949, when two local
businessmen, John M. Sullivan and George Faulkner, formed a committee of local residents and businessmen to organize a parade. On March 11th, 1950, the first Grand Marshal, John Sullivan, led the parade down Route 25A from Miller Place to downtown Rocky Point. Nearly 1000 people attended the inaugural event.
Drawing and engineering were the focus of a recent five-week technology unit a group of P.J. Gelinas Junior High School eighth-grade students completed. After learning how to use Sketch-Up design software, students applied
basic engineering and architectural lessons to create digital drawings of their bedrooms. Once mastering this task, the class tackled a larger scale project – creating replica 3D drawings of their homes to scale.
For the latter, they imported stamps of their property from Google Earth and worked to build their homes from the foundation up, including sidewalks, perfectly pitched roofs and natural privacy barriers.
Creative Seats Minnesauke Elementary School and P.J. Gelinas Junior High School in the Three Village Central School District recently collaborated on an artistic project — one aimed at brightening the days of long-term pediatric patients at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital. Members of the schools’ National Junior Art Honor Societies, with the help of the junior high school
technology club, created heavy-duty wooden lily pad shaped platforms for the bottoms of IV stands. The pads will provide a fun surface for the children to sit and ride upon while walking through the hospital hallways; providing an alternative to traditional wheelchairs. The pads were decorated with unique and colorful designs, ranging from ones showcasing favorite

Disney characters to floral arrangements and graphics. In total, the schools created 24 pads. This initiative aimed to support a national movement – The Lily Pad Project – created by a 17 year-old Washington state native who lost his battle with Leukemia in February 2015.

Stock Market Game W.S. Mount Elementary School sixth-graders in Anthony Prinzo’s class recently dominated the competition during this year’s regional Stock Market Game. Despite a barrage of challenges often felt by investors, two teams from the class rose to the top and outperformed 233 teams on the regional level to capture the first- and second-place spots in the
contest. The first-place team was made up of sixthgraders Neal Carpino, Alex Lin and William Zhang. The second-place team was comprised of sixth-graders Ivan Ge and Eli Kopp. The online simulation of the global capital market engages students in fourth12th grades in the world of economics, investing and personal finance. For the competition, participants are given the chance to
invest a hypothetical $100,000 in an online portfolio. The Stock Market Game, sponsored by the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association, reinforces classroom lessons such as critical thinking, economics and other financial concepts that students will use for the rest of their lives.

Developmental Disabilities Month
After a library lesson on holidays and cultures from around the world, Edna Louise Spear Elementary School third-graders invented new holidays. The students drew inspiration from the book,
“Palapalooza” by Daphne Skinner, which tells the story of five friends who set out to create the perfect holiday. Using library resources, the Port Jefferson students originated holidays
including a cookieinspired Trefoil Day and literary-based Harry Potter and Authors days. Students then shared their new holidays with their peers by creating posters.

Dodging for a Cure To assist in finding a cure for juvenile diabetes, the Earl L. Vandermeulen High School’s Student Organization held its fifth annual Dodge to Cure Diabetes Event on March 4th. The pay-to-play
event, led by senior Matteo DeVincenzo and freshman Phoenix Jampol, raised $320 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and an additional $320 to support future Student Organization events.
“It was a wonderful event for a great cause,” said advisor Sarah Ogden, who extended special thanks to student volunteers and teachers who volunteered as referees during the event.

Two-Time Champ Ward Melville High School senior and wrestling all-star Christian Araneo captured his second straight win at the New York State Wrestling Championship on February 27th in Albany. Competing in the 195-pound weight class, Christian
proved to be a tough competitor throughout the championship and clinched the winning title with a score of 3-1. The top wrestler has been a member of the Ward Melville team for six years and on the varsity lineup since eighthgrade. He holds a varsity
career record of 179 wins 29 losses; many of those upsets were in his early years as a varsity wrestler. In the last two years he only suffered one loss and he completed this year’s season undefeated. Christian will be attending Princeton University in the fall.
Art of Arguing As part of a recent unit of study on argumentative writings, P.J. Gelinas Junior High School seventh-graders in Jacqueline Shaw’s class showcased their knowledge and budding research skills during an interactive fair set up in the library. The initiative was developed as a conclusion to a monthlong unit of study called “The Art of Argument and Research Based Essays.” During this lesson, the students learned
about the components of an argumentative paper – in particular the need for evidence to support claims and the importance of a counter claim. With the help of library media specialist Nicole Connelly, the students worked to strengthen their research skills by accessing a number of online databases. After completing a class project focused on competitive sports, the seventh-graders researched
an argumentative topic of their choice and explained their opinion on that subject in essay and visual formats. Topics ranged from the benefits of technology in learning environments to bans on plastic bags to the safety of tanning salons. Students presented their findings to their peers during a research fair and fielded questions about the arguments they claimed.

Ride for Life Returns Students at North Country Road Middle School in the Miller Place School District recently welcomed back Miller Place native, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) patient and founder of “Ride for Life,” Dr. Chris Pendergast, to teach ALS awareness. Dr. Pendergast used patient stories, a multimedia presentation and the story of baseball great Lou Gehrig’s struggle with the
disease to teach students about ALS and how they can help. The students also participated in a discussion with Dr. Pendergast and gained valuable life lessons about determination and perseverance. “Ride for Life” is an annual public awareness and fundraising campaign. Each May, ALS patients ride their electric wheelchairs across Long Island, escorted by local
schools and community groups. The “Ride” first began in 1998 with Chris Pendergast, who aimed to create a unique way to focus on ALS and provide a way for patients, families and friends to fight the disease. The “Ride” has raised over $4 million for research, patient services and awareness programs.

kindergarten through sixth-grade students trained alongside the professionals to learn how to walk on stilts, spin plates, juggle, and use diablos or Chinese yoyos. As a conclusion to the school’s participation in the project, sixth-graders conducted an evening
circus performance for their family and friends. They took to the center ring and performed several of the tricks that they had learned, enthralling their proud audience and impressing them with the new skills they had learned.

In just the past couple of years, especially, it seems, at commuter colleges, the majority of students in campus corridors seem to be staring down at their smart phones. “In the classroom, cell phones are a major distraction,” said Stoney Brooks, a professor of Computer Information Systems at Middle Tennessee State University. “Many students do not think that multitasking – checking Facebook, texting, watching a harmless YouTube video, etc. – is harmful to their learning. This is not true. Humans cannot multitask – we rapidly task-switch. And whenever we switch tasks, our brains have to refocus our processing to the new task, and we forget some of the information that we had for the first task. There are studies that show that, for example, social media use in the classroom is associated with increased stress and lower classroom performance.” Obviously, this can be a
safety concern, too, with no one actually looking up and taking in the action happening around them. But also it can be a quality-of-life concern, as students may not feel they can escape their dayto-day worries while on campus, instead managing their private lives via the device. What suffers could be the so-called “college experience,” the experts warn us. You may be missing out on enjoying your time on a real, physical campus while you tend to a virtual world. “Cell phones have a great potential for help and for harm. Sadly, the harmful effects are more prevalent than the helpful ones for today’s students, and they are cheating themselves out of the true college experience,” Brooks added. One professor told us an anecdote of another professor who gives his students allotted breaks for their cell phone use. This would be analogous to the cigarette breaks given in the 1970s and prior. The students have trouble
keeping focus if they can’t get a fix. Although quality use of the smart phone is more important than using it for fun. “What the students are reading on their phones isn’t all unimportant content,” said Steven Rothberg, president of College Recruiter, a job placement site. “With well over 90 percent using smart phones and most reading e-mails on their smart phones, students are often using their phones to search for an internship or entry-level job. That type of reading will require more focus on their phones and less on their surroundings than if they were looking at videos of cute kittens.” We decided to focus on the work of Dr. Ofir Turel, professor of information systems and decision sciences at Cal State Fullerton, for this issue. “Smart phones are like refrigerators full of surprising foods; it is very tempting for many users to get sucked into checking and updating

content,” Dr. Turel told us. “Taken together, the strong psychological rewards people receive from using applications on their cell phones, the inconvenience they feel when they do not use them, and the time it takes to do all this are reasonable possible explanations for the need to spend break time, while walking through university corridors, on the cell phone.” You have to ask yourself, is what you’re doing on social media really all that important? “The concept of a “friend” has changed, from having 10-30 friends when I grew up to having hundreds or thousands of “friends” on Facebook, some of whom you have never met,” Turel said. “Managing so many so-called friends, following their daily, and often mundane, routines and activities, is time consuming. “Overall, the balance between the positive and negative effects of cell phone really depends on the self-control of users
and their understanding that they need to put limits on and control their use patterns. Ultimately, allowing the use of such sites in class assumes a certain level of maturity – students need to refrain from abusing such systems, and use these “recharging” rights wisely.” So what can be done about this problem, if anything? “First, we need to increase awareness among students regarding potential problems associated with excessive and sometimes addictive use of some technologies,” Turel said. Some universities already include a module on Internet/video gaming risks for incoming freshmen students, he noted, so adding a seminar on appropriate smart phone use would be easy. “Many causes of dropping out have to do with spending too much time on non-productive Internet activities such as playing video games,” he said. “Teachers can explain
the risks to students and discuss their cell phone and social media use policies in class.” Turel added, “Cell phones, Facebook and other technologies are like food – we need them and we do not want to avoid them. When consumed at healthy levels, for the right purpose and properly (for example, around the table and not while driving) they are very useful. However, overand improper consumption can lead to adverse consequences. We need to be better aware of these risks and teach ourselves to develop the right balance of both food consumption and technology use.” Brooks concluded, “The addiction that students have to their mobile devices has fundamentally changed the nature of interpersonal relationships and communication. The technology has allowed us to communicate and connect easier and more rapidly, but has caused even more distance between people.”

Fun & Education Collide School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI), is pleased to present the 17th Annual SBPLI Long Island Regional FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition (FRC). The event is being held on April 1st and 2nd at Hofstra University’s David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex in Hempstead, with opening ceremonies at 8:30 a.m. on both days. Families and supporters from all across Long Island are invited to watch 51 teams of students
and engineering and technical mentors from Long Island, the New York metropolitan area and Brazil demonstrate their skills in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. They will compete for honors and recognition that reward design excellence, competitive play, sportsmanship and high-impact partnerships between schools, businesses, and communities. This year’s challenge, FIRST STRONGHOLDSM is based on a popular medieval castle-
conquering and battlestrategy game. Robots gain points by incapacitating defenses and scoring boulders through goals in the opposition’s tower. Canine Companions On November 23rd, the New York State Sons of AMVETS presented Canine Companions for Independence with a donation in the amount of $1,000 to assist in providing food and veterinary care for a future assistance dog that will be placed with a veteran with a disability. This is also the 2015-2016 NYS Sons Commander’s Project for NYS Sons Commander Patrick Mitchell. Canine Companions for Independence is a 40 year old national non-profit organization that promotes the concept of training specially bred dogs to help people with disabilities other than blindness. All Canine Companion dogs go through an intensive training process where they learn to master more than forty commands. The dogs and Veterans are matched to form a team, and together they attend a two-week training program at the Northeast Training Facility, Miller Family Campus in Medford where they learn to work together.
Canine Companions for Independence Wounded medical centers. Veterans Initiative provides highly trained assistance Canine Companions trains four types of dogs to dogs, at no cost to Veterans and active duty military address different types of disabilities. Service Dogs assist adults with physical disabilities, including Veterans from the Wounded Veterans Initiative; Hearing Dogs alert the deaf and hard of hearing to environmental sounds and their sources; Skilled Companions enhance independence for children or adults with cognitive disabilities and Facility Dogs work with a professional in a therapeutic visitation setting.
