honors the late Ann Marie Brown, who served as vice president for government and public relations for the Hospital Council from 1983 to 1993. The Global Institute at Long Island University (LIU) hosted its first event Thursday night, featuring General Colin L. Powell, USA (Ret.). Introduced by the Institute’s Chairman, former Congressman Steve Israel, Powell discussed his commitment to youth education programs throughout the nation, as well as his service as a four-star General in the United States Army and as the 65th Secretary of State (2001-2005). “With the launch of this Global Institute, LIU will become a real leader in global affairs,” said Gen. Powell. “The Institute will bring world leaders to the region, introduce new brands of strategic thinking and problem solving, and assist decision makers here in New York in deepening their understanding of international relations.” “I can’t think of a better person to kick off the
Global Institute at LIU than an American hero, General Colin Powell,” said Steve Israel, Chairman of the Global Institute at LIU. “Having a living legend as our inaugural guest sets the bar high, and we are looking forward to bringing in some of the brightest, boldest and most forwardthinking leaders – both domestic and international – in order to increase Long Island University’s profile as a leader in national security and global affairs.” The 25-minute informal question and answer session, which included questions from members of the audience, addressed such topics as General Powell’s service to the Army during the Gulf War, how he handled troubled diplomatic relationships as Secretary of State, and the separation of church and state. Powell also had an opportunity to share his insight on the recent

presidential election, President Trump’s budget proposal and the administration’s alleged ties to Russia, as well as how the U.S. and its allies can most effectively fight ISIS. Overall, Powell stressed the importance of diplomacy coupled with strength, emphasizing that building relationships and trust with other nations must play a vital role in American foreign policy. The crowd of more than 500 people-- which included LIU students and faculty, students from the United States Merchant Marine Academy, and members of the public – gave the General three standing ovations. “Leaders like General Powell can help guide our University to expand opportunities for study and research and challenge our students to become the next set of visionary leaders,” said Kimberly R.

Family Fishing Festival The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP) will hold their annual Spring Family Fishing Festival on Saturday, April 1st, at Belmont Lake State Park. “Freshwater fishing is an activity the whole family can enjoy, especially on Long Island,” DEC Regional Director Carrie M. Gallagher said. “The spring fishing festival at Belmont Lake State Park is an excellent way to kick off the fishing season and introduce the family to the sport. No license is needed to participate. Festival visitors can learn about freshwater fishing opportunities on Long Island and local fishing clubs, try fishing for trout, participate in the casting contest, and more.” Additional sponsors for the fishing festival include the Natural Heritage Trust, the Fisherman Magazine, and radio stations 106.1 WBLI and 102.3 WBAB. The festival begins at 10 a.m. and is free of charge. Activities include open fishing, fishing instruction, fly casting demonstrations, and fish cleaning services. DEC and a number of local fishing clubs will have a display and demonstration area, and participants are urged to try their hand at fly casting. Loaner rods and free bait will be available to participants throughout the day. The
supply of loaner rods is limited and participants are encouraged to bring their own fishing tackle if they have it. Children’s activities also begin at 10 a.m. and include an inflatable slide (weather dependent), the “Spring Fling” casting contest, and hands-on educational displays by DEC’s Education Unit. Children participating in the casting contest will have a chance to win prizes supplied by DEC’s I FISH NY Program, OPRHP, the Fisherman Magazine, and The Natural Heritage Trust. To further encourage fishing in New York State, Governor Andrew Cuomo signed legislation in 2012 expanding the opportunity for free fishing clinics and allowing more New Yorkers to experience fishing for the first time with increased DEC free fishing clinics throughout the state. The Free Fishing Days program began in 1991 to enable more people to sample the incredible fishing New York State has to offer. Governor Cuomo’s NY Open for Fishing and Hunting Initiative, under the 2016-2017 budget, provides $3 million for State land access projects and $4 million for hunting and fishing infrastructure. The Spring Fishing Festival is a designated Free Fishing Event, so the freshwater fishing license requirement for anglers age 16 and older is suspended for this event.
The festival highlights DEC’s spring (March and April) trout stocking program in Nassau and Suffolk counties. Prior to the festival, DEC and OPRHP will stock Belmont Lake with close to 4,000 brown, brook, and rainbow trout. Upper Twin Pond in Wantagh, Oyster Bay Mill Pond, Massapequa Creek and Reservoir, as well as 17 other Long Island lakes, will also be stocked with trout by DEC, providing excellent prospects for spring fishing in both Nassau and Suffolk counties. After two successful years, nine yarn shops from Mattituck to Port Washington will be participating in the third annual Long Island Yarn Crawl from March 30th through April 2nd, 2017. Over the course of four days yarn crafters - knitters, crocheters, weavers and spinners - are invited to participate in this self-guided tour of our Long Island yarn shops, which will have extended hours and special activities throughout the weekend. It is a great way for crafters to explore what our local fiber community has to offer and meet other local yarn enthusiasts. Group Education Programs Brookhaven Town will kick off our spring school/ group education program season on Monday, March 20th. The program will include a tour of the historic West Meadow Beach, discussion of the unique ecology of the 1.5 mile-long peninsula and education about the invasive

Suffolk Marathon Set track the progress of their favorite runners. The new relay race will be made up of four-member teams running the full marathon. grant from the 2015 race. “The funds we received will support local veterans and dogs in training at Paws of War.” The marathon course will again begin in Patchogue Village and pass through the heart of the downtowns of Bayport, Sayville, Blue Point and Heckscher State Park, and finish back in Patchogue Village in order to provide more water and scenic views. Race organizers will work with local businesses, civic associations and chambers of commerce to organize watch parties and events along the route. “We’re really looking forward to promoting the Catholic Health Services’ 3rd Annual Suffolk County Marathon and Freedom Fest,” said Discover Long Island President & CEO, Kristen Jarnagin. “Not only does this event bring in many out-of-state visitors to enjoy all our island has to offer, but it also encourages locals to get out and experience home-grown flavors and

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone announced Monday that the expanded Catholic Health Services third annual Suffolk County Marathon will take place Sunday October 29th, starting and ending in Patchogue. The marathon, half marathon, 5K and newly added marathon relay races support organizations serving veterans living in Suffolk County. The race is also a qualifier for the 2019 Boston Marathon. The 2016 race, with 2,677 registered runners, raised $140,000 for veterans’ organizations. “This event is a great opportunity to support the veterans who have sacrificed so much to our community,” the County Executive said. “Because of these races, we are able to bring a spotlight onto their contributions and raise funds that will provide services for veterans in need.” The race will also feature a GPS application that will allow people to

Recently, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone was joined by local officials, the United States Golf Association (USGA) and representatives from the Shinnecock Hills Golf Club to announce the opening of the USGA Championship offices in the Village of Southampton in advance of the 2018 U.S. Open. The Championship will be held at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club on June 14th-17th, 2018. Suffolk County and Shinnecock Hills Golf Club previously hosted the U.S. Open in 1896, 1986, 1995 and 2004. The USGA also recently announced that the U.S. Open will return to Shinnecock Hills in 2026. “I applaud the USGA for having boots on the ground well in advance of the 2018 USGA Championship,” stated County Executive Steve Bellone. “Charlie Howe, USGA Championship Director, along with other USGA officials have already engaged in planning with the Town and

News 12 Scholar Athlete In recognition of her dedication to her academics and athletics, Ward Melville High School senior Ellen Li has been named a News 12 ScholarAthlete Award winner. The program, sponsored by the Bethpage Federal Credit Union, recognizes
student-athletes that go above and beyond in their high school and community. Ellen is a four-year member of the high school’s volleyball program, has been named to the All-County team, was recognized as the League I Defensive Player
of the Year and received the Exceptional Senior Award. At Ward Melville, she also serves as the secretary of the math team. For this honor, Ellen received a $1,000 scholarship. She will be attending Brown University in the fall.

The first eleven points of the Boy Scout Law must be demonstrated in order to go from one rank to the next, including Eagle. The 12th point - “A Scout is Reverent” - can be demonstrated in a variety of ways including the earning of the religious award of the Scout’s individual faith. As with all the religious emblems, these are not an award for Scouting skills, but rather an emblem authorized by the Boy Scouts of America to be worn on the Scout’s uniform after satisfactory completion of the necessary requirements. For the 8 to 11 year-told Cub Scouts, the Aleph Emblem requires seven areas of study, including Torah, prayers, religious
holidays, the synagogue or temple, Bible heroes, famous American Jews, and the land of Israel. In observance of the 12th point of the Scout Law, Boy Scout Robert Sherter of Boy Scout Troop 221 (Manorville) and previously of Cub Scout Pack 221 (Manorville) was presented with the Aleph Emblem on March 5th at the Suffolk County Council’s Jewish Committee on Scouting’s annual Awards and Recognition Breakfast, held at Temple Beth Chai of Hauppauge, by JCOS Member Jan Rose. Boy Scout Sherter was presented with a medal, certificate, a purple and silver “scouting religious emblem knot” (to be sewn onto his uniform), and a special Jewish Committee
on Scouting kippah (skullcap). He had been previously presented and recognized with earning his Aleph Emblem at his Cub Scout Pack’s Blue and Gold Luncheon on February 4th, 2017 at Rock Hill Golf & Country Club in Manorville, New York. Boy Scout Robert Sherter of Troop 221 (Manorville) is the son of Shari and Doug Sherter and the grandson of Marty & Dina Koval of Coram and Sidney & Selma Sherter of Hampton Bays. As a Webelos Cub Scout of Cub Scout Pack 221 (Manorville), he had crossed the bridge to become a member of Boy Scout Troop 221 (Manorville) last month during the Blue and Gold Dinner.

Swimmer Wins States Rocky Point High School senior Chris O’Shea won the 100-meter fly event at this year’s New York State Swimming and Diving Championships. His time of 48.76 in the event also earned him for AllAmerican status. Throughout his swimming career, Chris has amassed numerous
swimming accolades. During this year’s state championship, he also placed second in the 100-meter backstroke with a time of 49.26 and was recognized by NYSPHSAA as an All-State Scholar Athlete. The Rocky Point School District congratulates Chris on his countless
accomplishments and wishes him best of luck as he continues his athletic journey at Eastern Michigan University, where he plans to major in Exercise Science/Athletic Training in addition to taking part in the school’s swimming program.

Awards Captured Rocky Point Middle School’s Radical Robotix Robotic team has taken on this year’s competition season with much success and most recently earned high honors at the Long Island Championships held at Longwood High School. Going up against 40 of the best FIRST Lego League Robotics teams from across Long Island, Rocky Point’s Radical Robotix team won the prestigious “Innovative Solution Award” for their project design of a “Pet Rescue Door.” This project
design is one that would automatically open a door when triggered by a smoke detector or CO detector. The team built a working prototype based on their inspiration from the tragic events of a local family who suffered the loss of a pet during a home fire. In addition, the project was so well-received and the students’ presentation was found to be exceptional that the judges also presented the team with the “Global Innovation Award.” This award in essence nominates the team to submit their project for
further recognition and for the chance to compete in the national competition held in Washington, D.C. in June. Supervisor Ed Romaine has announced that registration is now open for the 10th annual Great Brookhaven Clean Up. The event, which is cosponsored by the Town of Brookhaven’s Department of Waste Management and Keep America Beautiful, Inc., will be held on Saturday, May 20th at various locations throughout Brookhaven Town. It is part of a national effort that draws over 5 million volunteers in more than 20,000 communities
across America who come together to pick up litter and clean miles of roadways, rivers, lakes, and more. Last year, the Great Brookhaven Clean Up drew over 3,300 residents. Free gloves, trash bags and t-shirts will be provided by the Town for the Great Brookhaven Clean Up volunteers. The supplies will be available for pick up at the Department of Waste Management’s third floor office at Town Hall during
regular business hours (9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) from May 8th to May 19th. Evening pick-ups are scheduled for May 16th and May 17th from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Brookhaven Town Hall is located at 1 Independence Hill in Farmingville. ‘Tis the time of year when all become Irish for a day, in the honorary sense anyway, and partake in the various St. Patrick’s Day celebrations held across Long Island and New York City. The funny thing is – well, perhaps more ironic than outright humorous – is that when my family and I traveled to Ireland several years ago, we were somewhat surprised to learn that those native to the Emerald Isle do not commemorate the occasion in even remotely the same manner as we do. In fact, the holiday takes on a far more religious tone, filled with pilgrimages to mountaintops to honor St. Patrick himself; a far cry from the drinking and parades which wind through most main streets on this side of the pond.
Speaking of Ireland, and travel, I certainly wish to do more of it, both here and abroad. Before our family trip, I had never been on a plane in my 30 years on this earth; nor, of course, had I bothered to apply for a passport. Old-fashioned road trips across the good old U.S. of A had never held much appeal due to my, shall we say, occasional tendency toward motion sickness during any car ride surpassing two or so hours. And so, at this point, my travels have extended ever so slightly north and south of New York, about halfway down the east coast – no further. And my passport, while it proudly sports that one stamp from Ireland, has remained packed away ever since. Unacceptable, I know. And with that, a new season is on the horizon, although whether Mother Nature will
cooperate remains to be seen. March has always been a notoriously fickle month, what with the remnants of winter storms to contend with, spring rains hovering overhead and blossoms waiting to burst forth from the trees. It is a time of beginnings, of growth, of shaking off the chill of the last several months to head out and feel the warmth of the sun as we explore the great outdoors. No need to pack a suitcase – just hop in the car and go, in any direction, and enjoy the beauty on this long island that we call home. So, as you head out in your green attire this week, take a deep breath of fresh air and start planning some fun activities to see you through to summer. Spring may be a gateway to the season of sun and surf and sand, but it is pretty spectacular in its own right. Enjoy it.

Special Tribute On the first day of March, in order to kickstart Women’s History Month, Legislator Leslie Kennedy had the distinct privilege of taking part in Brookhaven’s Tribute to Women in Commerce and Professions, which was hosted at the Holiday Inn Express in Stony Brook. The event was held to honor the great women we have here in our community who have achieved success in their professional lives, and the many programs that are locally available to help women who are in
need. Brookhaven also established the 1st Annual “Edna Gerrard Excelsior Award” and honored 19 women of distinction for 2016, who are members of Decisions, a women’s empowerment group that helps women succeed. Brookhaven has many women’s groups such as a domestic violence group, women’s support groups and divorce information classes; they also have a “Dress For Success” program that has clothed almost 5,000 women with business professional clothes.
“It was a privilege to be a part of this event to honor and support women; there are so many amazing women in my community. I am so proud of all that Decisions does in support of women,” said Legislator Kennedy.
