Women in Public Ofﬁce Day is everyplace and this day, while symbolic, highlights not only the accomplishments of women elected to office, but also of the increasing awareness that women can and need to be part of the change conservation,” said Legislator Hahn. “I am proud to be alive during an era when the voices of women are no longer allowed to be marginalized and am just as proud to have the support of my colleagues, regardless of sex, that understand a woman’s perspective is essential to our shared path forward.” According to Retugers University’s Center for American Women and Politics, in 2017 only 19.6% of Congressional and 25.1% of state legislative seats

were held by women and six of the fifty governors (12%) were females despite the 2016 United States Census estimating women make up 50.8% of the national population. The Suffolk County Legislature is slightly more representative of the population it serves with 1/3 of its membership being female. “It is my hope that when we honor the women elected to office, we will inspire more women and girls to want to be part of our democratic process by not only running for office, but to also be engaged in all parts of governmental administration and society,” concluded Legislator Hahn.

When Life Gives You Lemons Strange as it may seem, I still hope for the best, even though the best, like an interesting piece of mail, so rarely arrives, and even when it does it can be lost so easily. ~ Lemony Snicket ~ The above is one of my favorite quotes, penned by American author Lemony Snicket, creator of the famed “Series of Unfortunate Events” books and several other works. A bit tongue in cheek, with a dash of sarcasm, his words have always resonated with me on many levels. Mostly concerning the irony of life as a whole, they offer an undeniable degree of wisdom in between the cynical undertones. I have often been categorized as an unapologetic idealist; which is to say, optimism mixed with a touch of unrealism. Having taken to heart the expression that you can - quite literally - do anything you put your mind to, I see no valid reason why the seemingly

impossible be not, in fact, very possible with the proper balance of dedication and drive. Of course, this concept often involves multiple parties working as one, which is generally where problems come into play. Individually, we can each set our minds to particular goals and aspirations and see through the necessary steps to complete them. As a group, even a small one, it often requires a meeting of the minds, so to speak, a bit of give and take to find an acceptable middle ground. The problem with this is agreeing upon the “happy” medium. As with most favorite quotations, this particular one seems to resonate year after year, albeit applied to different circumstances; but relevant, nonetheless. As much as time marches on, just as many aspects of life remain the same. I will always feel optimism is a preferable quality to embody, farreaching as it may be. If you can’t hope for the best, then what is the

point of setting goals at all? Sure, the outcome will always be in question; but this is what makes taking calculated risks - and yes, even the occasional blind leap of faith - necessary. It may not pan out the way you desire; but, on the other end, it just might lead to something even more wonderful in the long run. Who’s to say? If life has taught any of us a fairly universal lesson, it is that there are plenty of things beyond our control, just as many things within our grasp; and, as good or bad as a situation may seem at a particular moment, it is apt to change in the blink of an eye. This is why it’s so incredibly important to hold on to the moments of peace and prosperity, fleeting as they may be, while always driving forward to overcome the obstacles which present themselves. If you run over a few lemons in the process; well, that’s what sometimes leads to the sweetest batches of lemonade.

As the world pauses to reflect on the contributions and accomplishments of women during this International Women’s Day, Suffolk Legislator Kara Hahn is proud to announce that the County is joining a growing number of municipalities that have designated March 19th as “Celebrating Women in Public Office Day.” The designation comes after the Legislature, on Tuesday, unanimously approved a bill sponsored by Legislator Hahn making the proclamation. A project that started with some ideas to transform a basement storage room into a sports team room came to fruition at Rocky Point High School this winter thanks to several dedicated volunteers. The completed project was unveiled at a special celebration in late February. More than 25 people attended the ceremony that showcased the clean, state-of-the-art room, complete with a 4K HD projector and videoscreen for team members to view breakdown videos of their performances, stadium seating and strip lights on

the four step-down levels. Framed inspirational quotes and artwork depicting the school’s Eagle mascot adorn the walls. Dan Spallina, Rocky Point physical education teacher and girls’ lacrosse team head coach, spearheaded the project. He put a simple word out for assistance and was met with enthusiastic parents who worked tirelessly to help create a designated space for collaboration and camaraderie. Charles Delargy, the district’s director of health, physical education, intramurals and athletics,

Summer Music Camp presented opening remarks that recognized the volunteers who brought the project to fruition. He was followed by Mr. Spallina, who presented a PowerPoint on the transformation and personally thanked the girls lacrosse players, their parents and the many teachers, school personnel and administrators who supported the project. “The room symbolizes so much more than just some steps and four walls,” Spallina said. “The volunteer work and dedication in this community is second to none.”

Registration for the 2018 Summer Music Camp organized by the Port Jefferson School District Music and Fine Arts Department is now open. The annual camp provides an enjoyable and positive opportunity for beginning and advanced students to enhance their musical studies while meeting new friends and playing music together.

The camp offers several levels of musical training classes, including beginning band and string. There are also more advanced classes for current elementary and middle school band and string instrumentalists. The camp runs from July 9th-19th with times varying depending on experience levels. The fee is $125 per class and a class

Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School students in Dave Falcone’s fifth-grade class in the Rocky Point School District learned about some of the latest technologies during a recent workshop with Jussi Kajala and Paul Nix of 3-D Bear.

During the workshop, the students learned about 3-D Models, 3-D Printing and Augmented Reality. Then, they had the chance to deploy their newfound knowledge by completing a hands-on challenge. The students worked in small groups to research

a dinosaur and create an environment or parktype area for it to survive based specifically on the dinosaur’s characteristics. Once completed, the students presented their findings and AR creations to the class on the Smart Board.

The Welcome Friends soup kitchens have provided hot, nutritious meals five days every week for over 27 years. The volunteer staff has increased to more than 200 remarkable members, and the guests typically number between 50 to sometimes more than 70 each night. Welcome Friends operates with a 100% volunteer staffed organization, assuring contributors that their donations are used exclusively for the preparation and serving of meals. The volunteers together form an outstanding team that addresses hunger and works to expand relationships with individual supporters, local food markets, farm stands, religious institutions, community leaders, local village government and other agencies. After almost three decades serving the greater Port Jefferson area, the leaders and volunteers of Port Jefferson’s Soup announced their decision to become an independent notfor-profit corporation named “Welcome Friends.” The operation has become self-sustaining, with a solid foundation of local community support. Exploring Gov’t As an extension of their classroom lessons, Rocky Point High School students in Rich Acritelli’s and Brooke Bonomi’s government and U.S. history and government classes recently met with Suffolk County Sheriff Errol Toulon Jr. During the workshop, the newly sworn in sheriff, spoke about his life and professional career before opening up the floor to questions from the students. Sheriff Toulon spoke about the moments

that he felt best defined and helped to shape his life - including being a two-time cancer survivor and previous work in law enforcement as well as in the county executive’s office. He also urged the students to never take things for granted, to embrace their schooling. “I really enjoyed kicking off my high school listening tour with the students in Rocky Point and fielding questions about my career in law enforcement,” Sheriff Toulon stated. “As

county sheriff, I want to have a positive impact on the next generation. I want young people to know that their voice matters - and that elected officials really care about what they have to say.” Following the meeting with the two classes, a small group of students participated in a proactive discussion about substance abuse and prevention as part of the sheriff’s “get to them before they get to me” initiative.

Volunteer Honored Rocky Point Middle School eighth-grader Quentin Palifka has earned the 2018 Prudential Spirit of Community Certificate of Excellence honoree, a national program that

honors youth volunteers nationwide for outstanding volunteer service. This honor is presented to the top 10 percent of all applicants from the state in recognition of their

volunteer activities and leadership commitments. This honor is given on behalf of Prudential Financial and the National Association of Secondary School Principals.

Service Learning Minnesauke Elementary School students and staff in the Three Village Central School District are regularly committed to engaging in initiatives geared toward giving back

their community. Most recently, secondgraders in Maria-Elena Mazza’s class teamed up with the sixth-graders in Melissa Flanagan’s class to create gift bags for

Save-A-Pet. As part of the initiative, the students created thank-you notes to those adopting pets from the establishment and collected many donations for the organizations.

In a cross-school learning experience, Minnesauke Elementary School sixth-grade students in Patricia Woods’ class attended a special workshop presentation with Allison Kane, a social studies a teacher at Ward

Melville High School. Expanding the students’ study on China’s history and political policy, Ms. Kane spoke in detail on the one child policy that previously existed in the People’s Republic of China. The topic was connected

to the class’s current read aloud of the book, “Among the Hidden.” Throughout the workshop the students asked Ms. Kane questions about the book and the policy itself.

Dance routines, songs, violin and ukulele performances, and a piano sonata written by one student’s mother were part of the entertaining Port Jefferson Middle School 12th annual talent show on March 2nd. Dozens of students participated either as

performers or part of the stage crew to the applause of the delighted audience. Student announcers Farzana Shakeri and Kiersten Parmegiani also gave a nod to Dr. Seuss’ birthday as they dressed as his beloved characters Thing 1 and Thing 2. Under the direction of

teacher Allison Giannusa, the event was also an opportunity to collect canned goods for local food pantries and raised $867 for Friends of Karen, an organization that assists families with a child diagnosed with a lifethreatening illness.

The World’s a Stage The Miller Place School District recently hosted the Bright Star Children’s Theatre performance of an interactive, biographical show about Jackie Robinson at the Laddie A. Decker Elementary School. The show was arranged as part of an initiative to showcase American heroes to help students connect with influential figures in American history while also learning lessons

applicable to their daily lives. During the performance, professional actors dressed in elaborate costumes, acted out Jackie Robinson’s story, from growing up in rural Georgia to his ascent as a Major League Baseball Hall of Fame icon. Student volunteers from the audience also joined the actors onstage to learn about how to overcome bullying without fighting

Sci-O Invitational Paul J. Gelinas Junior High School’s Science Olympiad team in the Three Village Central School District recently earned a first-place win at the Cornell University Invitational. During the event, the students competed against several nationally ranked teams, including Piedmont, North Carolina,

and the team’s friendly rivals at Eagle Hill, New York. Gelinas students scored one of the best team totals in tournament history. The B-team also performed well, beating most other A-teams. Likewise, the C-team had an impressive performance at the competition. The Gelinas Science Olympiad Team is eternally

grateful for those whose support made this program and its success possible, including school and district administrators, coaches, parents, volunteers and program alumni who have helped the students become scientists. The team looks forward to continued success at the regional and state tournaments.

Their experience was helpful during the beef dissection because they were able to assist in identifying the external anatomy of the heart, locating the base and the apex of the heart, and the right and left sides of the heart. Students from the Animal Science, Nurse Assisting, and Clinical Medical Assisting Programs at the Academy at Ward Technical Center in Riverhead collaborated on a cutting-edge learning experience; dissecting a beef heart. A human heart is very similar to a beef heart, thus allowing in-depth discussions related to the similarities and differences. Both serve the same purpose: to oxygenate blood from the lungs to the heart and pump it through the body, and both have four valves and four chambers. The difference between the human heart and the beef heart is size and weight. The heart dissection lab allowed the students to observe and analyze, compare and contrast the dimensions, chambers, and valves to gain a better

This early exposure to techniques and handson practice is beneficial to students aspiring to employment in the Health Career professions and Animal Science.

Community Vote Set During the March 5th meeting of the Comsewogue School District Board of Education, the board voted unanimously to move forward with a bond proposal to improve district facilities based on recommendations from the communityled Facilities Committee. The Facilities Committee was established to review the state-mandated fiveyear building conditions survey, tour district buildings, review financial and enrollment data, and, ultimately, present its recommendations and findings to the board. The committee presented it’s recommendations in a special public meeting on February 12th, 2018. The proposal, as recommended by the committee, and now approved by the board of education, will be voted on by the community on Tuesday, May 15, 2018.

The proposed bond, totaling $32 million, focuses on improving three main areas throughout the district’s six school buildings: health and safety, infrastructure and the three A’s – academics, arts and athletics. The proposed facility improvements preserve the integrity of the school buildings, address repairs, improve instructional resources for all and upgrade athletic facilities. Age is not the only factor that can impact driving abilities, but it is an important one. There is evidence that most people experience age-related declines in physical and mental abilities.
