by Irish soldiers serving in the British army in 1762. Back then, green attire was a symbol of Irish pride but was banned in Ireland, which was still governed by the British. However, on the streets of New York, homesick soldiers stationed in the colonies had the freedom to sing Irish songs, wear green, play the pipes to familiar tunes, and speak Gaelic. The parade was a boisterous time to celebrate Irish culture. New York City became home to a large number of Irish immigrants. As the number of Irish immigrants in New York increased, St. Patrick’s Day celebrations continued to evolve and

even spread, as immigrants started to call cities other than New York home. Today, the NYC St. Patrick’s Day Parade is one of the biggest parades in the world. The day begins with High Holy Mass at Saint Patrick’s Cathedral at 8:30 a.m. Then the parade begins along 5th Avenue, running from 44th Street to 79th Street from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The 2020 Grand Marshall is James T. Callahan, General President of the International Union of Operating Engineers. Callahan traces his lineage to County Limerick and County Kerry, and will lead the 259th anniversary of this beloved parade.

While flowers certainly add beauty and a wonderful aroma to wedding ceremonies and receptions, there are other reasons behind their inclusion in such festivities. In ancient Rome, brides carried or wore flower garlands because the Romans believed flowers signified hope, fertility and new beginnings. In the Middle Ages, brides did not carry flowers, but rather strong-smelling spices and herbs. The rationale was that the herbs and spices would drive away bad luck and evil spirits. Flowers also served another practical purpose. In eras when bathing was a luxury, different flowers and herbs helped mask body odors. It wasn't until the Victorian era, when flowers were used to symbolize romantic love, that they became part of wedding ceremonies, according to Modern Weddings magazine.

A Saint Who’s Not A Saint was active. The official process for canonization was not instituted until around the 12th century, long after Patrick died. St. Patrick joins two other Irish saints who were never formally canonized. The only Irish saint to be canonized is Fergal, also known as St. Virgil of Salzburg. He was canonized by Pope Gregory IX in 1233. St. Patrick became a “saint” by popular opinion. In the early years of the Church, many martyrs and those whose lives were especially holy were considered saints, even if they were not

canonized. It is probable, with the approval of a bishop, that St. Patrick was considered a saint for these reasons. The concept of St. Patrick not being an official saint adds to the mystery of the man, who was born in Britain and was said to have converted the Irish from paganism with fabled symbolism that borrowed from ancient traditions. Even if his status as saint is informal, St. Patrick certainly made his mark, with a worldrenowned celebration commemorating his achievements.

St. Patrick is a man revered in Ireland and around the world. Despite being an influential figure in the history of Ireland and Christianity, St. Patrick is a saint in name only. Millions of people around the world celebrate whom they believe to be an official saint each year on March 17. However, according to Irish Central and writer Ken Concannon, the formal canonization process in the Roman Catholic Church was not in place during its first millennium, a period of time in which Patrick

St. Patrick’s Day has become a beloved celebration in which people of Irish descent and even those with no trace of Irish blood gather to celebrate. Over the years, celebrations of St. Patrick, who was instrumental in bringing Christianity to Ireland, have evolved. Traditions now include wearing green clothing, toasting with a pint of Guinness, eating traditional Irish cuisine, and prominently displaying shamrocks. Attending St. Patrick’s Day parades also is part of the festivities. Even though St. Patrick was a missionary who visited Ireland many centuries ago, the origins of much of the revelry surrounding St. Patrick’s Day, are more recent. Historical documentation puts some of the earliest St. Patrick’s Day fanfare at various places in the United States, such as St. Augustine, Fl., Boston and New York City. When adding square footage to a home, homeowners may need to knock down an interior wall or walls, the cost of which can vary widely depending on the walls being knocked down. Loadbearing walls are needed to support the home, and while such walls can be removed, homeowners may need to hire structural engineers at additional cost to orchestrate such removals. In addition, homeowners can expect to pay more when knocking down walls that contain ducts or electrical wiring. It also can be costly for homeowners whose homes are old to knock down walls. HomeAdvisor notes that the wall-removal process in old homes that contain lead paint or lathand-plaster walls is more intricate and may cost homeowners more money.

Andrew Muller Primary School Opens Registration The Andrew Muller Primary School (AMPS) in Miller Place has begun the process of registering students for the 2020-2021 Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten programs. “We are excited to welcome a new group of our youngest students to the District through our Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten programs,” said Dr. Marianne Cartisano, superintendent of Miller Place School District. “Parents are encouraged to register their children at their earliest possible convenience to ensure a smooth transition to school. Any questions should be directed to the main office at Andrew Muller Primary School.” Presented by SCOPE Education Services, the self-supporting Pre-K Program will follow NYS Pre-Kindergarten learning standards with NYS certified teachers and STEAM initiatives. The program will be held at AMPS, Monday through

Friday and features a morning session, beginning at 8:45 a.m. and running to 11:15 a.m., as well as an afternoon session beginning at 12:30 p.m. and running to 3:00 p.m. There is a $278 monthly fee, with a 10% sibling discount for a second child. There is also a non-refundable $40 registration fee, with $20 for each additional child of the same family. In order to be eligible, students must turn four by Dec.1, 2020. Registration and additional information can be found online at www. scopeonline.us. Kindergarten registration will be held beginning on Monday, March 16, 2020 through Friday, March 20, 2020. Registration is by appointment only. Parents are asked to call the AMPS main office at 631-474-2715 to schedule an appointment between the hours of 9:45 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. At the time of the registration appointment,

parents must have the following documentation filled out and accessible for each child that is entering kindergarten: 1) a completed registration packet; 2) an original birth certificate or other official documents proving the child’s age; 3) current immunization records; and 4) documentation to prove residency in the Miller Place School District which includes, but is not limited to, a copy of a deed or lease, and/or a notarized copy of a landlord affidavit. To avoid any delay in the registration process, please review the registration packet and instructions carefully which can be found on the District’s website under the Department tab/ Registration/New Student Checklist and Forms. If any documentation is missing, parents will be asked to make a new appointment date to bring in a completed packet. An incomplete registration packet will not be accepted.

Ward Melville High School’s talented varsity Science Olympiad team recently competed in the Eastern Long Island Regional Tournament, the largest regional competition in New York State, and placed first

American Cancer Society Welcomes New Hotel Partners Partnership Will Provide Complimentary Rooms For Cancer Patients Treated Away from Home Cancer patients traveling far from home for treatment across Long Island and in Queens need not worry where to stay during their care due to a new partnership agreement between the American Cancer Society, Courtyard Marriott and Springhill Suites. If you’re a cancer patient and your doctor says, “Your

best hope for a cure is in another town,” your first thought may be, “Where am I going to stay and how am I going to pay for it?” The American Cancer Society can help. The Society works together with hotels through its Hotel Partners Program to provide complimentary and/or reduced rate rooms to cancer patients who

Phone Scam Attempts On The Rise With a recent uptick in the number of reported phone scam attempts, PSEG Long Island again urges residents and business owners to make themselves aware of the tactics scammers use to try to steal their money. Phone scammers have

become more prolific and sophisticated in recent years. In many cases, the scammers can modify their caller ID to read “PSEG Long Island.” More than 6,600 calls were reported to PSEG Long Island in 2019, up from 4,088 scam calls

reported in 2018. While recent weeks have seen an increase in the number of scam calls, PSEG Long Island’s awareness campaigns appear to have made customers more alert. In 2015, 8.2% of the total number of reported calls

resulted in customers losing their money. Since 2018, that number is down to 5%. “Phone scammers want their targets to panic so they don’t think clearly. If you receive a call about a pastdue bill, don’t panic. Look for signs that it may not be

legitimate, such as a request for a specific payment type or an imminent threat of disconnection,” said Rick Walden, vice president of customer operations, PSEG Long Island. “Our representatives will never demand immediate payment

and, though we offer a variety of payment options, they do not include prepaid debit cards or bitcoin. Additionally, if a customer is scheduled for disconnection due to nonpayment, they will receive written notice
