utting their musical talents to good use, orchestra students from Port Jefferson Middle School kicked off Stony Brook University men’s basketball game on February 25th by performing the National Anthem. Among the students performing for fans of the Seahawks were bassist Jack Kelly, violinists Grant Samara and Noah Teaney and cellists Nichole Schully and Lucas Welinder. Pat pursued doctoral studies in theological etherics at DePaul University and was awarded a doctorate in 2007. Fr. Pat was assigned to teaching at St. John’s University in 2003. Since 2003, he has taught primarily moral theology courses in the university’s Department of Theology and Religious Studies and has served as the Superior of the Vincentian community at St. John’s University since 2009. Chantal in Wantagh. Following in the footsteps of his brothers Billy ’72 and Jimmy ’74, Patrick attended Holy Trinity and his nephew Matthew Buoneto graduated in ’01. After high school, Patrick attended Niagara University and then Mary Immaculate Seminary in Northampton, Pennsylvania interrupted for a year of Novitiate in the Germantown section of Philadelphia. As the Seminary closed in 1990, Patrick continued his formation at the Seminary of the Immaculate Conception in Huntington, New York where he was awarded a Masters in Divinity. Ordained at the Shrine of the Miraculous Medal in Germantown in 1992, Fr. Pat was assigned to parochial work at Immaculate Conception Church in Germantown.

The “Dominican Sisters Award for Parental Commitment to Catholic Education & Mission” will be presented to the Gallant Family of West Hempstead who has supported Holy Trinity since 2009, putting their daughter Brianna (Class of 2013) and their son, Joe (Class of 2015) through the school. During this time, the Gallants have been very active members of the Titan Parent Club and Mrs. Gallant has been actively involved with several fundraising projects for the school. When they sent their children to Trinity Mr. Don Gallant says, “They went in as good kids, for which we were blessed,
and they came out as incredible young adults. We could not have asked for Brianna and Joe to receive a better education or experience. As a parent or a child, ‘Once a Titan always a Titan’! We are very proud to be Titans and plan to remain active within the school for as long as they will have us.” English teacher Mrs. Mary Ellen Martin will be receiving the “Sisters of Mercy Award for Service & Dedication to Mission”. Mrs. Martin’s dedication to Catholic education started during her high school years at Maria Regina in Uniondale. Mary Ellen went on to Pace University to receive a BA in English (theatre arts concentration) and Stony Brook to get an MA in Literature. Her inevitable journey to Holy Trinity came almost 30 years ago as a mid-
year replacement in the English Department. Since then, Mary Ellen’s love of teaching led her to co-create Trinity’s esteemed Writing Program. Educational Technology magazine featured the program in an article highlighting the use of computer labs in teaching the writing process. What started as an elective for eleventh graders is now home to writing courses for all grade levels. Other activities that have kept Mary Ellen busy are her duties as co-moderator of the Student Council, oversight of the Holy Trinity Academic Challenge Club and the coordinator of the SMART program, a study skills program for incoming freshmen students. Residing in Bellmore, Mary Ellen and her husband John are the very proud parents of two
children, and HT alumni, Kelly ‘10 and Christopher ‘14. The “Distinguished Alumnus” award will be given to Mr. Emil Rensing, Class of 1992. Mr. Rensing began his professional career in 1995 at AOL beginning as an engineer and later heading a Global Strategic Development Group. His team was responsible for launching AOL service/AOL.com, Match.com, Moviefone, MapQuest, AOL Instant Messenger and others. Leaving AOL in 2000, he started a media management consulting firm with a colleague and together they developed several major media and marketing transformations. Their clients included MTV, AOL Time-Warner, Victoria’s Secret PINK, and WWE among others. In 2006, Mr.
Rensing launched what became the #1 online video company, Next New Networks, that produced the most watched regular “TV” programming online. By 2011, Next New delivered over 4 billion video views to over 200MM viewers globally. As co-founder and Chief Digital Officer of Studio 3 Partners, a joint venture between Paramount Pictures, Lionsgate Films and MGM, he oversees digital products and programming at EPIX, the fastest-to-profitable cable network in history. When not focusing on his day jobs, Mr. Rensing enjoys racing with Scuderia Niosi and Sam Yau Racing in the Italian WRC & Porsche Carrera Cup, flying wherever he has time to go, sailing the Southern Caribbean seas, and enjoying family. Celebrating A Milestone 100 in various increments, created pictures using the digits in the number 100 and individual books about the amount and crafted artistic projects displaying their favorite 100 items. The students each created individual projects using 100 of the same item. Setauket Elementary School kindergarten and first-grade students teamed up to collect 100
items per class for the district food pantries. They rallied together to collect hundreds of non-perishable foods, toiletries and paper products for members of the community. The grades shorted the collections by tens and completed various other math and writing projects surrounding the number 100.

The number of rays was first recorded without any shielding (control), then the shields for the six materials were individually placed over the chamber and the change in the amount of cosmic rays was recorded. It was found that aluminum foil is significantly better at blocking cosmic rays than any other material. It is important to understand
the outcome of this experiment as cosmic rays, while harmless to humans on Earth, can interfere with electronic devices or pose a life-threatening issue for astronauts. Senior Skills Earl L. Vandermeulen High School senior Ryan Burke demonstrated his mathematics mastery after participating in two recent math contests. At the Suffolk Math Tournament, held at Suffolk Community College, Burke competed against a few hundred
students and placed fifth in the individual round. Burke also excelled in the American Math Contest where he scored in the top fifth percent, qualifying him for the American Invitation Mathematics Exam in March. This is the second year he has qualified for the exam.
Burke serves as captain of the Port Jefferson Mathletes team and is a member of the Suffolk Math team, which competes nationally. Burke is also a member of his school’s Science Olympiads and is aptain of the Academic Team.

Pedals For Progress
Proudly Serving The Community Since 1953! Long Islanders can put their old bicycles to good use by donating them to Pedals for Progress, a program that rescues unwanted American bicycles (and sewing machines) and sends them to communities overseas. On Saturday, April 18th, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., members of Returned Peace Corps Volunteers of Long Island will accept donations of bicycles, sewing machines and cash for their 13th annual collection at the Massapequa Public Library, 40 Harbour Lane, Massapequa. Pedals for Progress has received, processed and donated over 143,000 bicycles, nearly 3,000 sewing machines and $10.8 million in new spare parts to partner charities in 38 developing world countries. In many countries, having a bicycle can have a critical effect on whether or not you are able to get to a job or school; it has been found
that income goes up 14 percent when a family has a bicycle. For many a sewing machine means having the possibility of making a livelihood. Bette Bass who was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Peru and now lives in Massapequa, says, “The donation of one bike or sewing machine can literally help put food on the table and smiles on the faces of a whole family.” Pedals for Progress also promotes bicycle repair businesses in the developing world. A community owned nonprofit bike store will get its first containerized cargo shipment for free (about 450 bicycles); that repair store then has to earn enough money selling the repaired bikes to pay for the next shipment. David Schwidenback, the president of Pedals for Progress, says the collection on April 18th will be sent to FIDESMA, a non-profit, nonpolitical, non-religious
development foundation in Chimaltenango Guatemala. Says Schwidenback, “The Long Island Returned Peace Corps volunteers have been integral to the success of Pedals for Progress by effectively recycling the bicycles and sewing machines of Long Island. Of the many organizations that collect bicycles annually, the LIRPCV collections have consistently been the most successful. Their efforts have lifted thousands of people permanently from poverty in Central America, Africa and Eastern Europe.” “We see this as one way to continue to contribute,” says Kathy Williams Ging. “As a volunteer in Peru I saw firsthand what a big difference having a bicycle or sewing machine can make in someone’s life.” Brian Richardson of Middle Island, who served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Korea, feels that the collection done
each year by Returned Peace Corps Volunteers of Longisland fit in well with the philosophy of the Peace Corps. “The Peace Corps is not about doing for people; it’s about helping people to become their own agents of change.” Bikes should be rust free. Bikes with flat tires in need of some repair are accepted. No tricycles. Sewing machines in working condition are also accepted. Each person who donates also will be asked to donate $10 per bike (taxdeductible) to help defray the cost of shipping the bicycles. SUBMITTED BY: Great attitude and positivity are components needed to achieve success. L’Damian Washington, NFL wide receiver, experienced heartbreak many times throughout his efforts to become a professional athlete. L’Damian grew up with his three other brothers, LaCourtney, Tomarious and Tobias. His parents were Sonya Washington and William Myles. L’Damian was born in May of 1991, in Shreveport, Louisiana. When L’Damian was just 6 years old, his father was murdered. Ever since, his mother took care of all four children by herself. Mrs. Washington was the biggest sports fan L’Damian knew. Her smile was the first smile he saw after every game. At age 15, L’Damian’s best friend was murdered. During that same year, Mrs. Washington had been cheering for L’Damian at his high school basketball game when she had a stroke and passed away. He quotes, “I wish I was cherishing her today instead of just her memory.”

LaCourtney, the oldest brother, took charge as head of the household. He worked as much as he had to in order to put food on the table and keep their home. L’Damian started playing football at age 9. He was passionate about playing football. He had an outstanding football season in his senior year with a 3.5 GPA. L’Damian visited Louisiana Tech and Missouri colleges. He loved everything about the University of Missouri. The support from his brothers led L’Damian to signing with Missouri. In his 2012 season, which was Missouri’s first foray into the SEC, he contributed 443 yards with 2 touchdowns. L’Damian’s career-best performance was in his senior year, with 50 receptions, 893 receiving yards, and 10 touchdowns. All this time, L’Damian was devoted to keeping
HIGH SCHOOL his family together. Pro Day was his last chance to make an impression on scouts. That day, he recorded a 4.39 second 40-yard dash, which ranked among the 20 fastest receivers in the 2014 NFL draft. The Dallas Cowboys signed L’Damian as an undrafted free agent after the draft. He is currently a wide receiver on the Miami Dolphins. L’Damian sees his story as one of an unimaginable opportunity rather than heartbreak. With his determination and great attitude, L’Damian became an NFL player, but more importantly supported his family. The moral of his life story is not only to be thankful for what you have, but also to stay positive and keep moving forward. If L’Damian can overcome such difficult obstacles, you can too. He believes without these difficult experiences, he wouldn’t be the person he is today. L’Damian plans to keep working hard, learn new things, and stay true to himself.

Nearly ten years’ worth of weekly columns under the moniker “In Step,” a title suggested by my dear friend, co-worker and “agent” of sorts, since passed, Peter Schleifer. It was meant to be a take off on my - at that point - 13 years of dancing and the idea that, somehow, I could find a way to engage our weekly readership with my random ramblings and musings on life. It sounded like a pretty tall order then, and remains so, but having had a passion for writing since the days of poetry units and short story exercises in elementary school, I felt I was up for the challenge. To be given the opportunity to write for a living, to do something I loved and reach an audience… well, that’s pretty special any way you slice it.

The topics may have been varied, the styles quite diverse, but at the root of it all was that feeling that this was something I could do. Sure, there have been weeks when coming up with an original idea, any idea, was somewhat tedious. Scanning through the archive, there have been plenty of recycled concepts, even a few exact reruns of “classics.” (Classics? Really? Who do you think you are, Ed Lowe?) But through it all, that same passion has always remained. This is why I studied journalism. This was the reason for my career choice, in spite of all those detractors who warned that
it was impossible to make a living in this field. Ultimately, though, it was exactly that “reality” that served as added inspiration for me to go after my dreams. After all, who’s to say what’s profitable, what’s a guarantee for success? And what is success, if you’re not doing something you love? Ten years. 500 columns. Such a long time; such a lofty milestone. So much has changed since July of 2005, much of which has been reflected in those columns. They serve as a public diary of sorts, documenting the highs and lows, and a showcase for my efforts to somehow encapsulate them into words. Thank you to all those readers who have supported me along the way. Here’s to more memories and milestones!

A camera has neither heart nor soul. If taken when a day is gray, A snapshot will capture the fog, mist or spray. A painting often projects what the artist feels; It also with the power of the moment deals. A sculpture is created out of marble, bronze or clay; It transforms the moment in the artist’s own way. When we write and describe, the moment shines thru. Music enchants what out of a moment grew. A song or a poem uses tone or prose To immortalize what in a special moment arose. Art puts its mark on the moment all the while; It creates a treasure of varying style. This is proof, that in one single moment in time It is possible to produce a creation divine.

Boat Building Tradition
For more than one hundred years Port Jefferson was known for building commercial ships as well as private yachts. The village’s restoration of the harbor front, turning one of the Bayles Shipyard buildings into the Village Center, led to the building of Long Island Seaport and Eco Center’s (LISEC) Bayles Boat Shop. The Bayles Boat Shop opened officially in 2011 with the mission of continuing the boat building tradition of Port
Jefferson. While the Shop does not build large ships, as a non-profit enterprise its 30-plus volunteers have built or restored 17 small wood boats of varying designs. The funds from these builds provide more than half the money needed to keep the shop functioning each year. If you have given thought to building a small boat, 16 feet or less, but are lacking knowledge or space to do so, contact LISEC. The Bayles Boat Shop could help you make

National Award Winner Jefferson’s Ferry Lifecare Retirement Community has been selected by Mather LifeWays Institute on Aging as a winner of its Promising Practices Award. This national award recognizes organizations that are moving away from conventional practices by developing and implementing new and innovative approaches in aging well within longterm care and senior living communities. This year’s award drew applications from 20 states, a record high. Jefferson’s Ferry was among the 30 finalists taken to the selection committee and was chosen as a winner based on their practice’s innovation, the outcomes presented, and the replicability of the practice. “The Promising Practices Award honors Jefferson’s Ferry for its implementation of a new
organization-wide focus on wellness,” said Sara McVey, Vice President, Mather LifeWays. “The ‘Embraceable You’ campaign championed the idea of the power of touch, resulting in positive indications of well-being.” Jefferson’s Ferry, Long Island’s first Lifecare Retirement Community, is home to more than 400 residents age 62 and older who live in the community’s independent residences, enhanced assisted living accommodations and skilled nursing unit. “It is extremely rewarding to be acknowledged in this way by Mather LifeWays Institute on Aging, and gratifying to know that our Embraceable You program can further make a positive impact outside of Jefferson’s Ferry,” said Bob Caulfield, President and CEO of Jefferson’s Ferry. “These awards are very affirming of our overall mission.”

For the tenth year in a row, Port Jefferson Middle School students showed off their talents in an effort to raise money for the Port Jefferson-based charity Friends of Karen. This year, the students’ efforts yielded close to $1,200 for the organization, which assists families who have a child with a life-threating illness.
Over the years, the middle school talent show has raised more than $12,000 for Friends of Karen. “When I first started the show 10 years ago, I never could have imagined that we would have raised over $12,000 for such a wonderful organization,” said Allison Giannusa, the middle school’s talent
show coordinator. “None of it would be possible if not for the talented students in the Port Jefferson Middle School and the supportive community.” This year’s talent show was held on February 27th and featured 16 performing acts, including a mixture of singing, dancing and instrument playing.

Smith and her husband, Dan Gasby, have been named keynote speakers for its 11th Annual Alzheimer’s Education Conference & Expo 2015 on March 26th at the Melville Marriott Long Island, located at 1350 Old Walt Whitman Road in Melville. B. Smith was recently diagnosed with youngonset Alzheimer’s disease, which affects those under the age of 65. The couple will discuss her struggles with Alzheimer’s disease and how they are coping and supporting each other during this difficult time. Ms. Smith is a restaurateur, author, and multi-industry businesswoman. She has been heralded by The
New York Times as “a Renaissance woman,” by Chuck Scarborough as a “domestic goddess,” and by The New York Daily News as “one of the most important African-American style mavens of all time.” She is a broadcast talent, entrepreneurial spokesperson and multiple award-winning recipient across a wide range of fields. Ms. Smith also earned kudos when she returned to the stage in her Off-Broadway debut in “Love, Loss, and What I Wore,” the awardwinning play by Nora and Delia Ephron. In 2012, Ms. Smith was inducted into the American Chef Corps, part of the U.S. Department of State’s newly formed Diplomatic Culinary Partnership with the James Beard Foundation. Mr. Gasby serves as the
Chairman of B. Smith Enterprises, Ltd., and has an extensive background in television, marketing and production. Formerly, Ms. Smith and Mr. Gasby were co-hosts at “The B. Smith and ‘Thank You Dan’ Show,” which was heard on Sirius XM Radio. He is a former member of the Board of Trustees at American University in Washington, D.C., and longtime member of the Board of Governors of the International Radio and Television Society Foundation. The event will begin with a caregiver fireside chat, to help provide encouragement and inspiration for guests. There will also be six seminars discussing such topics as Alzheimer’s research, behavioral/ communication training, nutrition, and ADRC’s legal advisory committee
will provide updates within the organization. The closing plenary session will be The Purple Angel Project from Alzheimer’s Speaks. In addition, motivational speaker Jim Ryan will be presenting an interactive session on managing thought. “It’s exciting to have such passionate and accomplished people such as Ms. Smith and Mr. Gasby who are able to speak about the issue of Alzheimer’s disease,” said Mary Ann MalackRagona, Executive Director/CEO, ADRC. “Education is key when battling Alzheimer’s.” The Education Conference and Expo is part of a two-day event to educate and inform those about Alzheimer’s disease, the causes of the disease and prospective treatments. Thirteen yarn shops from Montauk to Port Washington will be participating in the first annual Long Island Yarn Crawl from March 19th through 22nd. Over the course of the long weekend, yarn crafters - knitters, crocheters, weavers and spinners - are invited to participate in this self-guided tour of Long Island yarn shops. It is a great way to explore what our local fiber community has to offer and meet other local yarn crafters. Participants are invited to get their Long Island Yarn Crawl Passport and have it stamped as they “crawl” from shop to shop. Crawlers who collect stamps from at least 12 stores can enter to win our grand prize: a $100 gift card from each of the participating stores. Special edition Long Island Yarn Crawl bags can be purchased at participating shops, or are available as a free gift with a $20 minimum purchase (as supplies last). Each store has specials
planned and will have drawings for door prizes during the crawl.
