Awards of Excellence The Art League of Long Island’s ninth annual “Go APE” Advanced Placement Student Exhibition features 2-D and 3-D works by 122 students from 37 Long Island High Schools. This is an opportunity for what may be the first of many times these promising young art students will show their work in a professional gallery setting. The exhibit

Long Ago & Far Away Time continues to march on, and those moments we so casually took for granted along the way become nothing more than a distant memory, relegated to the nostalgia pile, to be savored in the imagination only. The difference, though, is that these flashbacks are increasingly from not so long ago, mere years, rather than decades… yet they seem a lifetime away, just out of reach. It’s the little things, too, the laughs shared, the stories told, the impromptu gatherings, the gifts exchanged, the memories made. Whether with family members, friends, co-workers, even the occasional stranger, every moment is part of something

larger, a curve in the path – your path – of life. Every decision made, or not made; each chance encounter or outlined goal – all leads to the point we are currently at, for better or worse. How amazing to be able to foresee the consequences of our actions; but then, our choices would be far simpler, wouldn’t they? Gone would be the mystery, the spontaneity, the happy accidents that tend to occur along the way when you simply close your eyes and just let life take you by the hand. There are those who believe in destiny; and there are those who refuse to think we don’t have as much input in our affairs as any otherworldly force. Which is right? Who’s to say. The only indisputable fact is that everything does

happen for a reason. People come into our lives, or go, as the case may be; and we are better for it. Every chance meeting is a lesson in disguise, to be determined at a later date. In the meantime, we go on, as does time. Our world grows smaller as circumstances change our daily dynamics, and we are forced to adjust, whether we care to or not. The memories fade, and their significance wanes in the face of more urgent, pressing matters. But we should never forget… the people, the places, the roads taken – all have led to here and now. And one day, not so very far away, this, too, will be but a snapshot in the giant album of life. We had best preserve it from now.

Community Caring For the past 29 years, students of Comsewogue High School have showcased their eclectic talents with the community at “A Night for Jason,” which will take place on Friday, March 18th, at 7:00 p.m. A diverse mix of talents - from pop songs, dance acts, martial arts displays and some good-old fashioned rockn-roll guitar playing - have graced the stage and this year is no exception. “A Night for Jason” is a student-run variety show produced in honor of Jason Mariano, a child in the school district who

succumbed to leukemia in 1987. The money raised from the event benefits Friends of Karen, a tri-state children’s charity with an office in Port Jefferson, that offers emotional, financial and advocacy support for children with life-threatening illnesses and their families in order to keep them stable, functioning and able to cope. “This is always such a great way to keep our students involved in caring for our community,” said Ms. Dana Urbinati, a teacher at the High School and coordinator

of the event. “Along with the talents and energy of everyone involved, we want people to know that the funds raised are going to help some very special families in our communities.” Tickets for this onenight, popular, perennial event are priced at $12 in advance and $15 at the door and can be purchased at the Comsewogue High School Main Office (631.474.8179) or at the door on March 18th. Celebrating Learning Celebrating an educational milestone, Three Village Central School District students and staff members marked the 100th day of school with educational lessons and creative character initiatives. At Arrowhead Elementary School, primary students worked in centers to complete math and English language arts exercises. They counted to

100 in various increments, created pictures using the digits in 100, fashioned hats using 100 items and penned individual books about the number. They also completed individual projects using 100 of the same item. Setauket Elementary School kindergarten through second-graders teamed up to collect 100 items per class for local families in need. As a

result, they donated well over a 1,000 nonperishable food items, toiletries and paper products to the district’s food pantries and the St. James Food Pantry. Connecting the service project to the theme of the day, the grades also sorted the collections by 10s and completed other math and writing projects based on 100.

The truth is: poetry is all around us. It’s in the sun, as it rises over the horizon. It’s in the moon, as it shines through the clouds. It’s in the way the light reflects off her eyes. It’s in the clouds, the trees, a weary morning’s coffee. Chaotic and beautiful in fashion, but yes, poetry surrounds us. It just waits to be found.

In honor of American Heart Month, Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School students and staff members once again participated in a Jump Rope for Heart event and raised $13,460 for the American Heart Association. The event, organized by physical education

teacher Maria Amoscato, was widely attended by students in all grades. During the voluntary afterschool program, attendees demonstrated their jumproping skills to the beat of popular music, and through their participation collected donations for the worthy cause.

All-American Honoree In addition, students, teachers and even parents competed in jumpoff contests. The event culminated with a Chinese auction, filled with a variety of prizes, and fifth-grader Jared Massa being named the top student-fundraiser with his donation of $1,000.

The Port Jefferson School District Board of Education celebrated Earl L. Vandermeulen High School junior Jillian Colucci’s accomplishment of being named an AllAmerican soccer player at its meeting on February 23rd. During the recognition, Colucci’s coach Allyson Wolf gave a brief speech

about the soccer player, who was then presented with a certificate. “Jillian is dedicated and a true leader that inspires her teammates,” Wolf said. “We are lucky to have her in Port Jefferson, as she exemplifies what it means to be a true athlete on a daily basis.” In addition to this AllAmerican honor, Colucci

holds several regional and state titles, including League Player of the Year, All-State, All-Region, AllLong Island Team and NYS Player of the Year. Additionally, she is a twoseason athlete, as she is also a member of the school’s varsity basketball team.

Raising Awareness To date, the pair has raised $500 for the American Diabetes Association through several bake sales and teacher jean days. They also hosted awareness days where they decorated their school in blue.

The girls kicked off the effort three years ago after learning that not many of their peers had an understanding of juvenile diabetes. The initiative was near and dear to the pair, as Jiwon herself has had diabetes since the age of 6.

Volunteer Service

For his dedication to helping others, Earl L. Vandermeulen High School senior Nick Fedler was awarded with the

volunteer hours at his school. “Nick is always willing to help out,” said high school Principal Christine Austen. “He is an all around great kid.” Throughout the school year, Fedler has volunteered as a senior counselor for the sixth-grade Frost Valley Trip, as an assistant director for the middle school drama club and as a special assistant to the boys’ varsity baseball team. He has also participated in Miracle League events, which provides sporting opportunities for disabled Volunteer children.

The Port Jefferson Board of Education recognized Earl L. Vandermeulen High School juniors Jiwon Woo and Emma Schoepflin on February 23rd for their efforts in raising awareness about juvenile diabetes within their school.

Saving Lives At a powerful morning assembly on February 24th, Earl L. Vandermeulen High School juniors and seniors learned that they have the potential to save lives by registering with the New York State Organ Donor Registry system. Students heard donor stories from Cathy Ryan, the mother of an organ donor, and her daughter, Megan Ryan, who teaches at the school and organized the assembly. Also sending

a heartening message was teacher Jesse Rosen, who donated a portion of his liver to his mother in last December. Dr. Lewis Teperman of New York University also spoke about the donor process and accompanying surgery. Enlightening students further was David Rodgers of the Long Island Transplant Recipients International Organization, who stressed the importance of having a

Robotics Competitors family conversation about donor registration. “Out of all 50 states, New York is ranked No. 50, meaning it has the lowest number of registered organ donors,” said Megan Ryan. “Right now, there are more than enough people waiting for an organ to fill more than two football stadiums. Just one donor can save eight lives with their organs and improve the lives of up to 50 people with tissue and corneas.”

Community Outreach

On Friday, February 26th, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker joined Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk, Rocky Point VFW Post 6249, and community members at a Home Dedication Ceremony for Tommy and Sue Sullivan, a veteran family, in Rocky Point. The home, which was

rebuilt as part of the organization’s Sandy Repair Project, was destroyed by a tree during Superstorm Sandy in 2012 and took Habitat three months to rebuild with the help of many community volunteers. Habitat for Humanity has built over 160 homes since 1988. They plan to

Miller Place School District’s North Country Road (NCR) Middle School team recently placed 7th out of 33 competing teams in the First Inspiration & Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) LEGO League Qualifying Event at Central Islip High School. The competition

encouraged students to apply their science, technology, engineering and math knowledge to solve problems involving food safety, recycling and energy conservation. The team of 10 students competed in multiple events throughout the day in the 2016 TRASH TREK

Challenge, including three Robot Game matches. The team was also judged in sessions of the Robot Game, the Research Project and the FIRST Core Values events. All activities were student-led, challenging the team to use their knowledge and experience to complete each task.

Community Compassion On Wednesday, February 23rd, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker attended the Mount Sinai High School Honor Society Volunteer Fair, held in the high school library. In order to imbue a sense of community and caring for others, the

Honor Society hosted the event to get fellow peers interested in volunteering opportunities. The twoday volunteer fair allowed students to explore different opportunities that meet their interests and abilities. Many local nonprofit

Based on their scores on this winter’s National German Exam, five Ward Melville High School students have been named recipients of the National German Exam Award. Frances Clever and Jeffrey Michel, each with a score of 99 percent, received the Gold Award and tied for the top ranking score on Long Island. Thomas Kernan

also earned the Gold Award with a score of 91 percent and was ranked seventh on Long Island. Additionally, Thomas has qualified for the next level of the competition – the interview – where he will now compete for an all-expense paid trip to Germany this summer. The three are expected to receive additional awards during a special

recognition ceremony this May, sponsored by the Long Island Chapter of the American Association of Teachers of German. This annual event is hosted to honor all top scores across Long Island. In addition to the gold award winners, Victoria Larocco was named a Silver Award winner and Dana Smith earned the Bronze Award.

Growing Awareness Frank J. Carasiti Elementary School’s Garden Club recently created an information community service campaign designed to increase the dwindling Monarch butterfly population. After learning about the decrease in the species and what monarch butterflies do to help our

environment, the students created and distributed “Save the Monarch Butterfly” bags throughout the school community. Since the diminished number of milkweed plants and changes in the environment are contributing factors, the bags included three different types of seeds, each of which are important

to the cause. The enclosed milkweed seeds were for the northbound butterflies to lay eggs on, and the black-eyed Susan and sunflower seeds were for the southbound butterflies to feed on. In addition, the packages contained milkweed balls for the recipients to place in fields to promote breeding grounds for the butterflies.

Reflecting Back Silence fell over the auditorium at P.J. Gelinas Junior High School as students listened to Warner Reich recall his experience living through one of the world’s darkest times – the Holocaust. Mr. Reich’s message – one focused on standing up for others and always remembering to “do the right thing” – captivated

the audience. During his presentation, he recalled the Nazi movement, their influences throughout Europe and his own escape from Germany before being captured and placed in one of the camps. Equating the passive behaviors of what transpired that time to bullying, Mr. Reich urged students to stand up for

others and not to tolerate any negative actions. At the end of the presentation, Mr. Reich encouraged the students to speak with their elders about their own family history – to get a sense about what it was like for their ancestors to immigrate to the United States.

Live on the Air Two students participating in Earl L. Vandermeulen High School’s afterschool Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) initiative spoke live on the air on February 23rd about the three-year-old program and its benefits. Junior Chloe Dugourd and freshman David Rotunno, enthusiastically took turns answering questions about the program during the 11-minute segment, which will air on L.I. News Radio 103.9 FM on March 19th at 10:30 a.m. The

students were joined by Port Jefferson teacher Jon Maletta, who co-advises the program with fellow teacher Pete Burawa. Also in attendance were the students’ counterparts from the Mount Sinai School District. A collaborate effort between Port Jefferson Superintendent Dr. Kenneth Bossert and Mount Sinai Superintendent Gordon Brosdal, the program gives both Port Jefferson and Mount Sinai students the opportunity to take a diverse array of advanced hands-on workshops

taught by professors and graduate students at Stony Brook University’s Center for Science and Mathematics Education. Through the program, which runs in four sessions throughout the school year, students are actively engaged in STEM lessons at the university. Previous projects included topics related to computer modeling and coding, electrical engineering, botany, biotechnology and genetics. The program is funded through a New York State grant secured by Senator Kenneth LaValle.

Encouraging Independence Each day as students enter Eastern Suffolk BOCES Masera Learning Center, the sixth graders locate their lockers, unpack their backpacks, take off their coats and jackets, hang them up, then go into their classroom to put away their communication books. Special Education Teacher Pamela CadenRoberts said, “The lockers are located directly outside the classroom. The student’s names are on the lockers; some are color coded.” Some students recognize their

names; some know their locker because of the color coding. Using lockers in this special education program is very beneficial. Roberts said, “I work in the middle school program at Masera. Independence is encouraged.” Self-help skills and living skills are taught in the classroom and generalized so they are usable at home. “The lockers may represent a closet at home,” said Roberts. What the students are learning at school is meant to carry over to their home and

other aspects of their life. Roberts said, “Because the students are responsible for their locker, they gain self-esteem and structure. Having a locker makes them feel special and distinct from the elementary school students in the building.” Masera Learning Center provides a transdisciplinary program, using Applied Behavior Analysis to address the needs of elementary through middle schoolaged students with autism and related developmental disabilities.
