Of course, change is not necessarily seasonal, nor is it always dictated by Mother Nature, but the symbolism holds true nonetheless. Being of Irish descent, one of the more notable milestones has always been St. Patrick’s Day; however, upon visiting the Emerald Isle several years back, I was

Students are encouraged to explore and pursue science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields both within the FIRST program and in their future education and careers. Students presented their solutions during one of six different Qualifier tournaments that were held at Great Hollow Middle School and Mineola High School in late January and early February. Teams that competed at the Qualifiers worked to earn an opportunity to advance to the SBPLI FIRST LEGO League Championship at Longwood High School on Sunday, March 4th. The full list of 40 teams that earned the chance to compete in the Championship tournament are noted below. These teams will work to earn the chance to advance to the

FIRST World Festival in Detroit on April 28th. “We had a great FIRST LEGO League season on Long Island and we are looking forward to our final event at Longwood,” says Stephanie Stern, CoProgram Director and SBPLI/FIRST Long Island representative. “Every year, we are amazed at the skills that our students acquire from this program – be it teamwork and sportsmanship or science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education. New Website Suffolk County Sheriff Errol D. Toulon, Jr. announced today that the Sheriff’s Office has launched a redesigned website at www. suffolksheriff.com. The project was one of the newly elected Sheriff’s first priorities because he wanted to ensure that the public had easy access to information such as visiting and bail instructions, filing for income and property executions, volunteer and intern opportunities - and the wide array of special programs offered by the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office. “The redesigned website is easier to navigate and contains information on so many of the services that we offer to the public,” said Sheriff Toulon. He added, “I wanted it to be user-friendly, informative and modern, and I think we hit the mark.” One of Sheriff Toulon’s priorities is educating the public about substance abuse, with a focus on prevention. Lisa Scrom, a music teacher at Edna Louise Spear Elementary School in the Port Jefferson School District, teamed up with librarian Selinda Stout to offer second-graders a unique interdisciplinary lesson. Students in Laura Kelly’s and Carleen Parmegiani’s classes

worked with Scrom on a musical composition unit and as a culmination, they connected it with science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The students composed their own songs using rhythms they learned and the pitches do mi sol. They notated them on staff paper, added lyrics and learned

how to play the songs on the instruments in class, and then used iPads to program the robots in the library to perform their original compositions. “It was a huge hit and [Ms. Stout and I look forward to collaborating] in the future,” Scrom said.

The Welcome Friends soup kitchens have provided hot, nutritious meals five days every week for over 27 years. The volunteer staff has increased to more than 200 remarkable members, and the guests typically number between 50 to sometimes more than 70 each night. Welcome Friends operates with a 100% volunteer staffed organization, assuring contributors that their donations are used exclusively for the preparation and serving of meals. The volunteers form an outstanding team that addresses hunger and works to expand relationships with individual supporters, local food markets, farm stands, religious institutions, community leaders and local village government. They begin the day early, picking up and delivering food donations. The food is then stored, sorted and prepared for the chefs. Volunteers set up, serve and clean after mealtimes. After almost three decades serving the greater Port Jefferson area, the leaders

and volunteers of Port Jefferson’s Soup Kitchen announced their decision to become an independent not-for-profit corporation, named “Welcome Friends.” The operation has become selfsustaining with a solid foundation of local community support. As they enter this exciting phase, the new corporation will serve our neighbors in the same caring tradition that has been the hallmark of these soup kitchens. Welcome Friends has independently met the challenge to become selfsustaining to ensure that guests need not fear the loss of meals. Under the leadership of the Executive Committee and Kitchen Coordinators, volunteers create a sense of community for neighbors affected by hunger and poverty by serving them with dignity and respect in a safe welcoming environment. Welcome Friends is currently in need of the following volunteer positions: Cooks, Assistant Cooks/ Food Prep and Pick Up/Delivery and a Grant Writer! The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) urges all New Yorkers to take this opportunity check their smoke and carbon monoxide alarms to ensure their homes are properly protected. If alarms have removeable batteries, those batteries should be replaced. Alarms equipped with sealed-in batteries should be tested to ensure they are in proper working condition. Alarms that are more than 10 years old should be replaced. At the end of 2015, Governor Andrew Cuomo signed a bill into law that will require all smoke alarms sold in New York State to be equipped with sealed-in, non-removable batteries that last for at least 10 years. The new law will take effect in 2019 and marks an important step in improving New York’s fire safety.

According to research from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), three of every five home fire deaths occur in homes without working smoke alarms, and the vast majority of smoke alarm failures are due to dead or missing batteries. Ten-year smoke alarms require little maintenance, and unlike alarms with removable batteries, they are nearly impossible to deactivate. Regardless of the type of alarm in one’s home, FASNY urges everybody to take some time and ensure their alarms are in proper working order. “Smoke alarms are the single most importance appliance found in every home,” said FASNY President Ken Pienkowski. “FASNY urges all New Yorkers to conduct routine, simple maintenance to ensure these lifesaving devices are in proper order. We strongly encourage New Yorkers to install 10-year smoke alarms, which cannot be easily deactivated. Equally important is installing and maintaining

carbon monoxide alarms, which are also critical in protecting life.” FASNY smoke & CO alarm tips: • Test alarms at least once a month by using the test button. • If you have an alarm with a removable battery, be sure to check the batteries every six months, and change the batteries

every year. If a battery is starting to lose its power, the unit will usually chirp to warn you. Do NOT disable the unit. • Vacuum or blow out any dust that might have accumulated in the unit. • NEVER borrow a battery from an alarm to use somewhere else. • NEVER paint a smoke

Spring Into Safety or CO alarm. • Install at least one smoke alarm on every floor of your home, including the basement, and in, or near each sleeping area. • Smoke alarms should not be installed near a window because drafts could interfere with their operation. • Families should also

Reward School Accolades During its midFebruary meeting, the Port Jefferson Board of Education made a special recognition to members of Earl L. Vandermeulen High School for their collective efforts in having the building named a Reward School by the New York State Education Department, an honor that it has achieved consecutively since the 2012-13 academic year. “I’d like to say that our engagement story was picture-perfect but, the truth is our engagement was as real life as it gets. Kurt was coming over and, on his way in, he gave me a package from “outside” that he said must had been delivered. I didn’t think too much of it; I figured it was something I had ordered for Christmas. I opened it up and there was a box of Lucky Charms with a very legitimate looking letterhead. It said that I was a winner of their “Marshmallows Only” contest, which I had entered religiously over past few months since their promotion started. I was so excited that I put down the letter before I finished reading it, and took out two bowls for him and I to enjoy. A few minutes passed and he asked me if I read the letter and I answered him “yes” - but the truth is I didn’t. I was too involved in my marshmallow winnings to be concerned about the invoice. He picked it up and said to me that I won a prize. I answered him, “Of course I won a prize, we are eating it! Marshmallows are the best prize ever!” I took the letter from him and finished reading it. It said “Congratulations Ms. Titcomb! Please take the prize at the bottom of the box as a token of our appreciation!” I reached in the box and pulled out a little blue velvet box, and when I turned around, he was down on one knee and asked me for my hand in marriage. I was so surprised I wanted to scream with joy, but I still had a mouthful of marshmallows and started to choke a little bit. He asked me if I was okay and to please not throw up on him. I was finally able to stop coughing and he looked up at me - still down on one knee because I had forgotten to answer him! I finally realized and said, “Yes, 100 million times, YES!” He got up and we kissed and I was crying tears of pure joy! I realized he had painstakingly hand-picked out hundreds of marshmallows over weeks and weeks to give me the absolute sweetest, thoughtful engagement I could have ever imagined. It may not have been picture-perfect for everyone, but it couldn’t have been more perfect for us. Sometimes things don’t always go exactly as planned, but with a little bit of luck and a heart filled with love, memories like this will surely be cherished forever!”

Vandermeulen High School seniors Jack Collins and Joey Collins were recognized by the Port Jefferson School District Board of Education for their contributions to the district’s athletic program throughout their high school and middle school years. In an uplifting tribute by Dr. Danielle Turner, the district’s athletic director, the twin brothers were praised for their individual commitment, character, leadership and ability to overcome challenges that stand in the way of success. Jack, the senior quarterback for the football team, was a two-time Newsday grid-iron great; named All-County and third team All-State; set school records including

completions (143), yards passing (2261, second in Suffolk County) and 18 touchdown passes; and was the first Port Jefferson football player to be named the Most Valuable Player in Suffolk County Division 4 football. He is looking at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Rochester Institute of Technology or Case Western Reserve University to continue his football career next year. Turner also read words of praise for Jack from football coach Andrew Cosci and baseball coach Jess Rosen, and for Joey from wrestling coach Mike Maletta for his successes on the wrestling mat during his high school career. “Joey Collins lights up the wrestling room when he enters,” Maletta said.

The event, which is co-sponsored by the Town of Brookhaven’s Department of Recycling and Sustainable Materials Management and Keep America Beautiful, Inc., will be held on Saturday, May 19th at various locations throughout Brookhaven Town. It is part of a national effort that draws over 5 million volunteers in more than 20,000 communities

across America who come together to pick up litter and clean miles of roadway, rivers, lakes, and more. Last year, the Great Brookhaven Clean Up drew nearly 3,800 residents. Free gloves, trash bags and t-shirts will be provided by the Town for the Great Brookhaven Clean Up volunteers. Celebrating 10 Years This year marks a full decade since SchoolBusiness Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI) began presenting FIRST® LEGO® League Jr. to students across the region. What began as a small (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) STEMfocused initiative for students age six to 10 has now grown into a powerhouse program aimed at igniting the creativity of children on nearly 100 teams. Each year, FIRST reveals a new and exciting challenge, dubbed this year as AQUA ADVENTURESM, for which students will have to do research and present their findings at one of three FIRST LEGO League Expos.

During this year’s Expos, which are slated to take place Saturday, March 3rd at Mineola High School and Sunday, March 4th, at Longwood High School, students are asked to navigate the uncharted waters of the Earth’s most important resource. Specifically, they were tasked with discovering from where everyday water resources come, and what happens on its way to consumers. After carefully selecting one way in which they use water and learning as much as possible about the process the water takes to get to that point, the students then work to develop a solution that improves upon the system. “We are so excited to celebrate 10 years of

The mid-February Connetquot Central School District Board of Education meeting celebrated the tenure of three devoted administrators within the district. After a lovely musical introduction courtesy of students representing the Ronkonkoma Middle School music program, Connetquot Central School District Superintendent of Schools Dr. Lynda Adams introduced the individuals recommended for tenure and presented them with tokens of appreciation for their unwavering dedication to the schools and community. The district congratulates newly tenured administrators: Assistant to the Superintendent John Allen, Assistant Superintendent for Special Services Monica Manzi and Director of ENL/ World Languages Denise Hannaoui.

Buddy Bench Donation Cadettes, many of whom attended Cherokee Street Elementary School, wanted to give back to the school. The girls raised enough money to donate two benches, one to be placed by the kindergarten playground and the other one by the older children’s playground. The Cadettes held an assembly and explained to the students and staff how

the “Buddy Bench” works. They said, “No child should ever feel alone. If you see a classmate sitting on the bench, you should ask them to play.” Clearly moved by their idea, Legislator Cilmi told the girls how he was very shy in grade school and could have used a Buddy Bench to help him make friends.

Food Protection Seminar Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today announced the county’s annual public seminar to inform residents and businesses on updates to the Suffolk County Food Protection Program. The Food Protection Program is designed to protect public health by establishing safeguards for the control of food and preventing consumption of unwholesome, adulterated or otherwise unfit food. Each year the county program issues

approximately 7,000 food service establishment permits, conducts more than 6,000 inspections and investigates approximately 600 consumer complaints. “This seminar is critical in ensuring the community is fully educated and has the proper information at their disposal,” said Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone. “Protecting the health of our residents and reducing the risk of foodborne illnesses is a top priority of my administration.”

The Suffolk County Department of Health Services will host the seminar on Monday, March 19th from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., located at 360 Yaphank Ave., Room 134 in Yaphank. The presentation, which will last about one hour, will include information on issues such as new technology and compliance matters. These include the development of mobile food safety applications and online e-commerce portal; food preparation

techniques that use reduced oxygen packaging (ROP); and new local laws regarding food allergens, carryout shopping bags, and methods for reducing risk factors for food-borne illness. At the conclusion of the presentation, there will be a question-andanswer session that will allow ample opportunity for attendees to provide feedback and suggestions to the administrative staff of the Department’s Bureau of Public Health

Protection. The County Executive has made it a priority to provide a more convenient process for businesses to undergo mandatory food safety training. Last year, the Administration announced the debut of a new mobile application that offers food service managers the convenience to undergo food safety training in Suffolk County. This new application is offered by the Suffolk County Department of Health Services as a

portable extension of its award-winning online Food Manager’s Course. The application is available free of charge on Google Play and the Apple Store. To date, more than 107,000 Food Managers have been certified since the course’s inception.
