Robotics Invitational Rocky Point Middle School’s robotics team participated in the third annual Mather Hospital Robotics Competition at Smith Haven Mall. Selected to compete by invitation, the team was the only middle school invitee at the competition. At the end of the event, the team was ranked third, an impressive feat given the high caliber of their competitors. During the event, the

team was tasked with competing on the daVinci surgical robot, a $1.5 million piece of equipment used for minimally invasive surgery. Team members worked to manipulate the five robotic arms to achieve certain tasks in a simulated virtual environment. They were graded on accuracy, timing and efficiency of movements. After a Mather representative, who trains surgeons on this equipment, stated that

doctors usually score in the 70s on their first attempts on this equipment, two Rocky Point students were commended for their impressive scores above 80. Eighth-grader Kyle Markland scored an 82 and sixth-grader Sean Vroom scored a 93. The event proved to be an educational learning experience for the team as they continue to prepare for this year’s competition season.

The answer probably depends on how old you are — but whatever your age, you’ll want to consider the best way of incorporating Social Security benefits into your retirement income strategy. Of course, if you have several decades to go until you retire, you might be wondering if Social Security will even be there for you at all. The basic issue is that the Social Security system is experiencing a sharply declining worker-to-beneficiary ratio. In plain English, this means that fewer workers are contributing to Social Security while the huge baby boom generation is retiring and taking money out. Still, Social Security has enough money to pay full retirement benefits to every eligible American until 2038, according to the Congressional Budget Office. After that point, benefits would have to be reduced unless changes are made to the Social Security system. And several changes have indeed been proposed. Given that we do have nearly 25 years until benefit cuts may need to be made, it seems reasonable that some type of solution could be reached to put Social Security back on solid ground. In any case, when thinking about your retirement income, you need to focus on those things that you can control — such as when to start taking Social Security and how you can supplement your Social Security benefits. Depending on when you were born, your “full” retirement age, as far as collecting Social Security benefits, is likely either 66 or 67. You can start getting your checks as early as 62, but if you do, your monthly payments could be reduced by as much as 30% — and this reduction is permanent. Consequently, if you can support your lifestyle from other sources of income — such as earnings from employment and withdrawals from your IRA and 401(k) — you may want to postpone taking Social Security until you reach your full retirement age. In fact, you can get even bigger monthly checks if you delay taking your benefits beyond your full retirement age, although your payments will “max out” once you reach 70. Keep in mind, though, that other factors, such as your anticipated longevity, should also enter into your calculations in considering when to take Social Security. As mentioned above, your retirement income

Flashback To Today By: Jamie Lynn Ryan There seems to be an obsession lately, especially on social networking sites, with “flashbacks” and “throwbacks” to times that, in hindsight, were happier and simpler. These moments are shared in the form of photos, videos, reminiscences of milestones and markers, all subtle indications that, for whatever reason, we are not overly happy in the now. But what of the present day? Some would contend that, to borrow from Billy Joel, this is the time to

remember (cause it will not last forever…la, la, la). And they would be correct. Difficult as it may be to step back and appreciate our current situation, whatever it may be, we may find that it was quite ideal in hindsight. No one knows what the next year, or month, or week, or even day, will bring. And there’s really not much sense dwelling on this vast unknown, as much of it is beyond our control. The important things, like family and friends and health and happiness… unfortunately, we can only do so much to maintain our little bubble

of complacency before some outside force pops it. They say you should find the positive in everything, make the most of adverse situations, and do at least one thing each day for you… but how many of us do? No, we would rather move robotically through life, obsessing over each obstacle, letting the slightest bump in the road throw us completely off course. E-Cycling Events The Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine and Councilman Tim Mazzei, liaison to the Department of Waste Management, will cosponsor E-Waste Drives and Residential Paper Shredding events for residents to safely dispose of unused electronic devices for recycling and have their old paper documents securely shredded and recycled. Waving Goodbye To Winter

As we wave goodbye to winter, it is easy to forget that there are people out there without a home, food or even shoes. The homeless are at an exponential disadvantage when it comes to adverse weather. We often complain about the trials of winter, but do we really have it so bad? Just having a house to go back to at the end of the day is an asset that we all take for granted. Many people don’t have heat. There is no relief at the end of an afternoon commute. Sure, they have no driveway to shovel, but they also

end up sleeping on the streets in the middle of a snowstorm. A few weeks ago, I took part in a Midnight Run. We went to the city and gave out bags of clothes to those who needed them the most. They were eternally grateful for our contributions. One man even tried to give us a thank you gift. Despite the fact that they have so little, the homeless people that we met proved to be some of the most generous. Even though some people regard them as “bums,” the homeless are fighting an uphill battle each and every

day. If one thinks living on minimum wage is tough, try surviving on change. Although I have no firsthand experience in the realm of the homeless, I can imagine just how hard it may be. People can be intolerant of the homeless. They wave them away when all they ask for is change. There is no daily salvation for this group of people that are trying so dearly just to make it. Before you curse the weather while waiting for your car to heat up, remember the men and women who are sleeping in the snow.

time after the surgery is short, and donors can generally resume their normal home and working lives within two to six weeks. • The number of living organ donors is more than 6,000 per year and one in four of these donors isn’t biologically related to the recipient. • A kidney from a living donor usually functions immediately, making it easier to monitor. Some deceased donor kidneys do not function immediately, and as a result, the patient may require dialysis until the kidney starts to function. • Nearly 100,000 people are currently waiting for a kidney. • 4,903 people died in 2012 waiting for a kidney. • 3,000 people are added to the waiting list for a kidney each month. • Depending on where

you live, the wait for a deceased kidney can be anywhere from 3 to 10 YEARS!!! Matthew Botchler is 34 years old and is going through Stage 4 kidney failure. He is in dire need of a transplant. Since his blood type is O+, he is considered a universal donor, and unfortunately not a universal recipient. Potential donors must be blood type O+/ O-, generally healthy (DOES NOT smoke, drink excessively, DOES NOT have diabetes, or cardiac issues, and has two healthy kidneys) and must be between the ages of 18 to 40. On August 7th, 2013, Matthew heard the four most devastating words of his life: “Your kidneys are failing.” On December 26th, 2013, Matthew received a phone call from the

Kidney Transplant team stating that he had been placed on the “Status 7” transplant list. This is only a small step in his long journey, as the “Status 7” list means that he must find his own living kidney donor. A living donation is extremely important because a kidney from a living donor lasts about twice as long as one from a deceased donor. In addition, the waiting period for a deceased donor’s kidney is approximately 7 to 9 years in New York State. This is an extremely long time, especially since Matthew is expected to keep the nephrostomy tubes until his kidney transplant surgery. Every two to three months, Matthew must go through a painful medical procedure to have these tubes replaced to avoid infection and to

On Thursday, February 20th, friends, family, and community members gathered at the corner of South Orchard Road and South Country Road in East Patchogue for a ceremony to unveil an honorary street sign in memory of Brookhaven Town resident Felicia Ortiz-Ruperto. Felicia was 54 years old

when she was killed in a hitand-run accident in August of 2012 while riding her bicycle on Station Road in Bellport. Felicia was a special person who lived life to the fullest. She was a Worship Leader at Church on the Sound in Stony Brook, a Counselor for Project Rachel, a Photographic Imaging

Student at Suffolk County Community College, and was the visionary behind the Felicia Ortiz-Ruperto Outdoor Photo Gallery project that has used artwork to beautify rides on the Long Island Rail Road. Felicia was a freelance photographer who loved music, church, and her family, and was an avid bicyclist. She is survived by her mother, Vivian Ortiz, husband, Daniel Ruperto, children Victoria “Tori” and Matthew “Matt,” and siblings, Diana Renne, Angelo Ortiz, and Michael Ortiz. Supervisor Romaine said, “It was an honor to share such a special day with Felicia’s family. She gave so much to the community and lived her life to the fullest. Five Ward Melville High School students enrolled in the German program have achieved outstanding results on this year’s National German Exam. The test, which is administered annually to nearly 22,000 high school students, includes both a written and audio portion. Exam results are among the criteria used in selecting the recipients of chapter awards and the national AATG/PAD study trip awards, a four-week study abroad program in Germany. Jeffrey Michel and Heidi Scarth received the gold award for Level III and will receive additional awards during a special awards dinner in May sponsored by the Long Island Chapter of the American Teachers of German. of 99 percent, Jeffrey tied for the highest score on Long Island.
