The HUGS program aims to provide comfort to sick children and elderly patients under medical care at St. Charles Hospital in Port Jefferson. The school was able to meet its goal and deliver the stuffed animals in time for Valentine’s Day. Thanks to all those who participated.

Luncheon A Success A record breaking, crowd of over 1000 Long Islanders attended the 14th Annual Long Island Go Red For Women Luncheon on Wednesday, February 11th. The sea of red could be seen throughout all the rooms at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury. This year’s honorees included Howard Stein, Senior Managing Partner of the Real Estate Practice Group, Certilman Balin Adler & Hyman, LLP and Deborah K. Richman, President and CEO DKUSA, Ltd. and Community Honoree, Premier Cardiology. Those in attendance also heard from 14 yearold heart survivor Gianna Schupler, a competitive dancer. Pet Food Drive Since 2009, through the generosity of their corporate partners and private donations, Long Island Cares, Inc. has provided free pet food and supplies to individuals and families in need, in an effort to help them maintain their pets at home as opposed to placing them in shelters. This year, Long Island Cares is partnering with the Suffolk County Legislature to expand awareness of pets needs and to help increase donations of vital pet food and supplies. III will be hosting a Pet Food Drive until April 30th at his office located at 1609 Grundy Avenue in Holbrook. Donations can include, but are not limited to, 5 or 10 pound bags of dog and cat food, canned food, treats, kitty litter, new pet toys, and any type of food for hamsters, reptiles, fish and ferrets. Shifting The Stones By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Confucius said, “The man who moves a mountain begins by carrying away small stones.” Such is the principle of proactivity based upon, of taking small steps to advance great lengths, ultimately. The key, of course, it to begin the process. Complacency is man’s worst enemy; however, settling into such a mindset is perhaps one of the simplest tasks to accomplish. Never mind that “To Do” list – it will be there tomorrow. And the next day. And the day after that. This is closely followed by its evil bedfellow, entitlement; that sense that you somehow deserve more than you have without feeling the need to prove it, or earn it, as the case

may be. Together, these flaws can lead once promising, motivated individuals down a path of bitterness, resentment and arrogance – not a flattering combination. The problem is, you don’t see it happening. You exist day to day, you settle into your routines, and then…well, then you just settle. Plain and simple. Ambition flies out the window, and with it, that drive that propelled you forward for so many years falls flat. As easy as it is to fall prey to this downward spiral, it takes a concerted effort to right the ship and get back on course. This is where the “small stones” come into play. Even something as simple as making lists, outlines of what needs to be done in a

particular time frame, can help. Sometimes, the simple act of checking an item off can make all the difference in turning a gloomy outlook into one of positivity. One item. One stone. One day at a time. And repeat, for as long as it takes to accomplish whatever it is your goal may be, whether something as simple as saving money for a particular item; or perhaps a far loftier ambition to go out and change the world. Whatever it is, however complex, all can be achieved using the same basic steps. So begin. And maintain. And, before you know it, this newfound motivation will become the stuff of habit – the good kind… the kind that leads to a fulfilling and successful life.

For the tenth year in a row, Port Jefferson Middle School Students will show off their talents at a talent show that will benefit the Port Jefferson-based charity Friends of Karen. Over the years, the Talent show has raised more than $12,000 for Friends of Karen, which assists families who have a child with a lifethreatening illness. The organization provides emotional, financial and advocacy support. This year, the talent show is scheduled for Friday, February 27th at 7 p.m. in the Earl L. Vandermeulen High School auditorium. The event will feature 16 performing acts, including a mixture of singing, dancing and instrument playing. Tickets are $5 or $4 plus a canned good.

Applications for the 9th annual Polish American Museum Founders Scholarship are now available. The $500 Scholarship is offered to high school students of Polish heritage residing in Nassau or Suffolk County, and a citizen of the United States. The student must be entering college in the Fall 2015. The Scholarship was established on the occasion of the museum’s 30th anniversary in honor of is founding members, Chester Wrobel, Julian Jurus, and Doctor Raymond Adamczak. Student Spotlight BULLYING Bullying is defined as “an overbearing person who habitually badgers and intimidates smaller or weaker people,” according to http:// dictionar y.reference.com/ browse/bullying?s=t. Being a student in seventh grade and a victim of bullying, my definition for bullying is when somebody thinks you are weak, “odd” or strange and makes fun of you for being who you are simply because you are different than them. Bullying is a very serious subject. Many cases of bullying happen each day, and kids do not tell an adult so they can get help putting an end to it. I made this mistake. I did not initially tell an adult, and this lack of action only made it worse for me. If you are getting bullied, you need to tell somebody or

you could eventually become self-conscious and doubt yourself. You could lose selfesteem and believe that you are what the bully says you are and isolate yourself from your friends. You think to yourself when your friends invite you to hang out, “They are only going to turn their backs on me too. I should just stay away from them from now on so they do not bully me.” Your friends may sometimes be the only people to help in these situations. When I was bullied, it was for three years! One in ten people get bullied every day. If you notice somebody being bullied, you need to stand up for them and tell the bully, “Stop it! Leave them alone.” If you are continuing to see somebody being bullied, you need to get an adult

immediately. Sometimes you may think that people are just joking around, but their intentions are to just make fun of you without you actually realizing what they are doing to you. Bullying does not have to be just verbal; it can also be cyber bullying and also physical bullying. In my case, I was verbally bullied. The words hurt dreadfully, but one way of handling it was by talking to my family. This was my way of getting the point that I was being bullied out, and I was able to also communicate my feelings when I talked about my situation. My family guided me in techniques to handle the situation and how to put an end to the bullying. Bullying is a serious subject.

Giving Kids A Smile

Sponsored by the Suffolk County Dental Society (SCDS), the Give Kids a Smile event held at the Long Island Aquarium in Riverhead brought awareness and education about the importance of good dental health to families with small children. SCDS Executive Director Dr. Paul Markowitz said, “Students from SUNY Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine, SUNY Farmingdale Hygiene

Program, Academy at Bixhorn Technical Center Dental Assisting Program, and residents from St. Charles Hospital volunteered their time to provide oral care and hygiene instruction. Dentists and specialists from all over Suffolk County donated their time and expertise to service the pediatric community. We examined over 250 patients.” Dental Assisting Teacher Carol Donohue said, “My

students got the experience of working with and learning from the college students and interacting with the community.” Tamara Chery, a dental assisting student from Patchogue Medford UFSD, said she volunteered because, “It’s just a good thing to do.” She always wanted to do something with teeth. “I know that sounds funny but I was inspired by my general dentist.”

Open House Sessions Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is hosting five open house sessions for prospective campers and families of children and young adults with special needs in March, April and May. Parents should bring their child if he/she will be a new camper, in order to allow them to get a sense of the camp and what they will experience throughout the summer. During the tour, parents will have a chance to meet the staff — the camp’s director, nurse and office manager — and ask questions or address any concerns that they might have. They will have the opportunity to view the

entire camp and explore the different areas dedicated for various activities such as arts and crafts, adaptive sports, games, etc. The open houses will be held on the following dates and times: • Friday, March 13th from 5 to 8 p.m. • Monday, March 16th from 6 to 9 p.m. • Saturday, April 18th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. • Friday, May 1st from 4 to 7 p.m. • Saturday, May 16th from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is a resident summer camp serving children and young adults ages six to 21 with both physical and

developmental special needs. Its mission is to help these children to achieve equality, dignity, and maximum independence through a safe and quality program of camping, recreation, and education. Throughout the program, campers participate in many activities, such as arts and crafts, talent shows, cook-outs, swimming and boating. The camp is located on Chet Swezey Road in Center Moriches. Welinder, who has been

playing since the age of three, will now have the opportunity to perform with the Island Symphony Orchestra at a concert on May 3rd at Suffolk Community College’s Van Nostrand Theatre. This is not the first time that Welinder, who has received extensive training at the Meadowmount School of Music, has been recognized for her talents. In 2014, she won first place in the Sound Symphony Orchestra’s annual solo competition. She also took second place in the Long Island Philharmonic’s

26th annual Young Artist Competition. Welinder is also a member of the World Alliance Chamber Orchestra, has served as concertmaster and principal second violin for the Julliard pre-college string ensemble and performed at the Oyster Bay Chamber Music Festival, as well as for the Stony Brook University Seawolves during the opening ceremony. The sweet sounds of the viola rang through the Edna Louise Spear Elementary School music room on February 12th as students listened to a performance by visiting viola player Jacob Clewell during their music class. The performance by Clewell, a graduate student at Stony Brook University, aimed to show the Port

Jefferson music students that the viola is a beautiful instrument that can produce wonderful sounds. Following his rendition of Asturias by Albeniz, Clewell performed two pieces, Mozart’s 1st Duo for Violin and Viola in G Major and Bohuslav Martinu’s Three Madrigals for Violin and Viola with Vanessa Salzman, the Port

The Town of Brookhaven’s Youth Bureau and the Holtsville Internal Revenue Service Center have once again teamed up for the annual “Totes for Tots” drive to help children entering foster care. The theme of the Healthy Heart Clinic at Academy LI Milliken Technical Center sponsored by the Clinical Medical Assisting Program was Love Yourself Love Your Heart. The clinical area of the classroom had three examination rooms set up for blood pressure screenings and for clients to have their height and weight checked for Body Mass Index (BMI). Each examination room had a bed, a privacy curtain, and blood pressure screening equipment. Clients rotated to a separate area where they could have their cholesterol and glucose

evaluated. Teacher Deborah Leedham said, “We have 44 students enrolled in the morning session and 38 in the afternoon session. The career opportunities are growing tremendously. Our students can get jobs in a doctor’s office, a walkin clinic, and hospitals.” The occupational outlook for medical assistants, according to the New York State Department of Labor, has grown much faster than the average for all occupations. The growth of the baby-boom population will increase the demand for medical services. With that, physicians may hire

more assistants to perform administrative and clinical duties, allowing physicians to see more patients. The clinic was a practical test of the student’s abilities. They also had an independent assignment that would be a part of their final portfolio. “Each student had to create an informational brochure about a disease and disorder of the heart. In addition to having practical skills, the students must demonstrate that they are computer literate, can do research, and can cite information properly,” said Teacher Mary Ann DeMillio.

Consumers Should Take Advantage Of Free Credit Reports ( N A P S I ) — T h e Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) found that many consumers are overwhelmed by the amount of information available to help them learn more about the financial services marketplace. At the same time, the CFPB found one of the most popular resources offered is information about credit reports. The credit bureaus have found that information about credit reports is popular as well. “Each year, there are over 25 million

free credit reports provided to consumers,” said Stuart K. Pratt, president and CEO of the Consumer Data Industry Association. “And while that’s a significant number, there are still a considerable number of consumers who aren’t exercising their option to get their report.
