Original Expression Leads To State Honors The Rocky Point High School Human Rights Club was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation from Gov. Andrew Cuomo for an essay written and submitted to the 2021 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Student Art & Essay Exhibition by freshmen Simone Carmody, Sofia Haviland and Parker Matzen. The certificate cited the

Pal-O-Mine Equestrian Named a Finalist in the 9th Annual Long Island Imagine Awards Pal-O-Mine Equestrian, Inc. (www.pal-o-mine.org, Islandia, NY), a private, not for profit organization providing a comprehensive therapeutic equine program using horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for children and adults with disabilities, was named a finalist in the 9th Annual Long Island Imagine Awards. The Long Island Imagine Awards was created to offer formal acknowledgement to some of Long Island’s most effective and innovative nonprofit organizations. The 9th Annual Long Island Imagine Awards has made the decision to convert the live awards gala to a virtual event that will take place on Tuesday, April 27, 2021 from 5:00-7:30pm. After the success of the 2020 virtual event due to Covid-19, the volunteer planning committee agreed that rather than continue to postpone, it is best to produce another exciting virtual event and get the prize money in the hands of the winning nonprofits as soon as possible. The virtual format will feature an hour long “Cocktail Event” where sponsors and attendees can network prior to the start of the program and again for 30 minutes at the conclusion. While most continue to struggle with COVID concerns, safety is our number one priority.” Bethpage has secured over 50 trained volunteers from Adelphi University, Long Island University, Molloy College, and New York Institute of Technology, who will work one-on-one virtually with tax payers to prepare the returns. Bethpage VITA volunteers will also educate eligible working families about the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) while preparing tax returns. The EITC is an anti-poverty program available to four out of five eligible Long Island households. VITA volunteers will work with taxpayers to ensure that eligible families are aware of the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), which could bring up to $6,557 into the hands of deserving Long Island families. Credit amounts are based on income levels, filing status and other factors. Eligible households can claim up to three years back of Earned Income Tax Credits. Bethpage has also partnered with The Health & Welfare Council of Long Island, which is an umbrella human services organization consisting of over 100 member organizations. HWCLI has teamed up with getyourrefund.org to help people file their taxes online with the help of HWCLI Staff and IRScertified volunteers from across Long Island. T h e Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations. Since the organization’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued. Sometimes a wish fulfills an immediate need, and sometimes it is a last wish or lifetime dream. Large or small, all wishes provide a meaningful “thank you” to the senior for a lifetime of service to others. Every wish they grant helps build a culture that values and respects our senior population. The Twilight Wish Foundation has expanded throughout America and they currently have 17 chapters. The majority of their chapter directors and chapter volunteers have fulltime jobs, but volunteer their time because they believe so much in the impact Twilight Wish has on our senior population. Many seniors experience social isolation, which can lead to undesirable conditions. Granting a Twilight Wish can help change that! You can qualify for a Twilight Wish if you are at least 65 years old, are a legal U.S. citizen, demonstrate financial need, provide a history of giving back to others and possess the cognitive,
emotional and physical ability to experience the wish. Twilight Wish recipients report that having their wish granted impacted their life for the better. Their mental and physical health often improved, positively changing their outlook on life! The wishes that this organization grants truly changes the way that our society views aging, as it witnesses seniors living life to the fullest. By sharing their recipients’ stories, they inspire both older and younger generations and help bring about a cultural shift in how aging is perceived in our society. To date, the Twilight Wish Foundation has granted over 3,700 wishes throughout our country and multiple wishes have being granted on Long Island recently! These wishes have ranged from simple needs wishes, such as shaving razors for nursing home veterans, to living life to the fullest wishes, such as going cross country in a tractor trailer truck. This organization has continued to do their good work throughout this pandemic. Today they are still helping others and when going to grant a wish, they are taking all the necessary safety precautions. Safety is a top prioity at The Twilight Wish Foundation. Tender Loving Cats to the Rescue Tender Loving Cats, a non-profit, a Long Island no-kill kitten and cat rescue run entirely by volunteers, experienced a boom in families stepping up to foster kittens and friendly adult cats over the past year due to the pandemic. This led to many more cats and kittens coming into the adoption program from the streets and finding homes. However, the need for foster families is ongoing. “Fostering is fun, rewarding and saves lives,” said Marge Goldin, a volunteer for the organization. “During ‘kitten season’ which runs April through October, Tender Loving Cats and other rescues get more requests for kitten placement than can be handled. But the number of kittens that can be saved is limited only by the number of fosters available.” Tender Loving Cats manages all the medical needs of the cats/kittens and provides assistance and support throughout the process. Once they are old enough and socialized, Tender Loving cats uses social media to find them
forever homes. No cat or kitten is adopted before they are spayed or neutered, microchipped and up to date on vaccinations. Goldin says that Tender Loving Cats is always in need of volunteers to assist in working 2-hour shifts in the two adoption centers that the organization runs out of two PetSmart locations in North Babylon and West Babylon. “This past year has been especially challenging, as the number of homeless cats has risen, whether due to people losing their jobs and not being able to care for their cats anymore or moving to other locations and leaving their cats behind,” Goldin said. “We are stretched to the limit, but we are determined to save as many cats as possible. We have a motto at Tender Loving Cats that we rescue the mistreated, save the injured and love the abandoned and we try to do just that.” Occasionally Tender Loving Cats is faced with situations where cats or kittens have serious medical challenges. Blindness, deafness, injury, illness or special
medication needs present themselves. Recently, as part of a widespread initiative trying to manage the cat population at Hofstra University, a volunteer took on the responsibility to foster a kitten born missing its back legs. The volunteer, Claudia Cannam, a Hofstra law student, is currently looking into getting the kitten a prosthesis. Rescues the mistreat Tender Loving Cats has a Trap-Neuter-Return program that targets the feral cat explosion on Long Island. Help for ferals is available in the form of trap rental and assistance with trapping. The rescue also can offer financial assistance to low income cat parents seeking to neuter their pets. CANS STACK UP TO A WORTHY CAUSE - Three Village elementary schools once again took part in a spirited “3V SOUPer Bowl Donation” competition to collect nonperishable food items for local organizations. This year’s competition winners were the students and staff at Minnesauke, who collected 2,122 items but the real winners were the district’s food pantries and Long Island based Blessings in a Backpack, that sends food home to school-age children on the weekends because the district collected more than 6,100 items for these organizations. Nassakeag Honors P.S. I Love You Day
Staff and students at Nassakeag Elementary School recently celebrated P.S. I Love You Day through a series of activities and events. On Feb. 12, all were encouraged to wear purple and foster kindness. The school’s PTA purchased purple balloons that were displayed outside the cafeteria, the gym and the library. In addition, the PBIS team created a list of different activities that can
be done in the classroom on this day. Additionally, second grade students in Mrs. Larsen’s class created paper heartfelt compliments that they distributed throughout the school and to others. The mission of P.S. I Love You is to bring awareness to the importance of mental health and decrease bullying. The organization strongly believes that by educating students earlier about mental health, the
conversation will be easier to discuss and students will be able to recognize when they or others around them need help. The Jazz Loft, a music venue and museum located in Stony Brook, has recently completed an ambitious renovation project of its basement, now known as the “Coal Bin.” The name is a salute to juke joints of the early 20th Century, such as Herb McCarthy’s Bowden Square which featured a basement space for music called the Coal Bin, which was literally located in the coal bin area of the building’s basement. The new Coal Bin at the Jazz Loft will serve as a functional work space as the Jazz Loft continues its mission of archiving and preserving Jazz history. Funding for the project came from a $40,000 grant from The Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation, Inc. and a matching gift from Jazz Loft patron Dan Oliveri. The Jazz Loft’s basement
section was updated and transformed into a multiuse work space which will be utilized by Stony Brook University (SBU) student interns, who will begin an archiving, inventory project and digitalizing project of the more than 10,000 historical Jazz artifacts in the possession of the museum. The interns will be using a program designed by students enrolled in a very unique class at the University called “Benevolent Computing,” offered by the Department of Computer Science within the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences. The course is directed by SBU professor Tony Scarlatos and such as its name suggests, explores the phenomenon of how software applications can affect positive social change in the world. “The Jazz Loft’s mission is dedicated to the
preservation, education and performance of Jazz and we now have a fantastic workspace for us to properly archive and store our Jazz collection” Jazz Loft Founder Tom Manuel. “It is an honor to have this project supported by the Robert David Lion Gardiner, which has also enabled us to preserve a part of our building that is 250 years old.” According to Manuel, the museum currently possesses paper records, sheet music, personal possessions of Jazz legends past and present, posters, photos, diaries, manuscripts, programs, musical instruments, vinyl record collections and more that require cataloging and storage.
