School Unity To promote academic, social and emotional growth and development within the school, members of the Earl L. Vandermeulen High School Sources of Strength program held a spirit week for their peers. Throughout the week of February 13th, students were encouraged to take part in spirit activities that

focused on taking care of one’s self, recognizing support systems and personal strengths and unity. Each day carried a theme and students were encouraged to dress to match themes, including mental health day, positive friends day, healthy activities day, mentors day and family day. The school’s new Sources

of Strength Program is a made up of a diverse group of students and adults who work to serve as a support system for the school’s study body. Are We There Yet? By: Jamie Lynn Ryan

I’m fairly good with directions. For someone who, as a passenger, is rather oblivious to her surroundings, once in the driver’s seat, I can generally navigate with little trouble. Of course, in this day and age, there is always the added benefit of GPS to fall back on. And by benefit, I mean often maddening source of frustration and bewilderment. Case in point: my friend and I have, over the last several years, attended several of the laser light shows at the Vanderbilt Planetarium. Of course, there are several possible routes to take, but all roads ultimately lead to one winding, somewhat meandering path through the

hilly terrain of Centerport. As these shows are generally in the evening, I always plug the address into the phone’s map so as to be sure I don’t miss a turn en route. Of the approximately half a dozen times we have headed this way, I can honestly say we have never managed to travel the same way twice. Never. Not once. Just last week, as if to prove the point, my phone’s darling virtual assistant proceeded to take us on a grand tour of the residential area surrounding the planetarium, complete with dozens of unnecessary turns (followed by U-turn’s and “rerouting”), forks in the road (continue heading straight, she said) and even a pass over a small body of water (do you remember there

Several original writings created by students at the Three Village Central School District’s R.C. Murphy Junior High School have earned high and prestigious honors during this year’s Regional Scholastic Art and Writing Competition. Two scholars earned Gold Key Awards signifying their placement among the top 2-3 percent in New York State. According to their website, the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards recognizes student achievement in the visual and literary arts in 29 categories, including editorial cartoon, poetry, graphic design, fashion, science fiction, video game design and more. Since 1923, the awards have recognized and encouraged millions of students, including Truman Capote,

Sylvia Plath, Andy Warhol and John Updike, who won when they were teens. The works created by the Gold Key winners will now be forwarded to the national level, where it will be considered for a Gold Medal. National medalists will be announced in the early spring. The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards is one of the nation’s largest, longest running, most prestigious literary arts programs that honors students in grades 7-12 for their original works. Lessons Along Broadway

Courtney Lewis’ goal to score 2000 career points became a reality for the Earl L. Vandermeulen High School senior on February 11th during a game against Pierson-Bridgehampton.

Prior to the game, Lewis was just 34 points shy of reaching her goal, but as the game continued, she realized she was close to attaining the goal. “I couldn’t have done it

without the support of my teammates,” said Lewis. In scoring her 2000th career point, Lewis became the 22nd player in Suffolk County girls basketball to reach the milestone and 32nd of all boys and girls to attain the benchmark Lewis has been playing basketball since she was in the fourth grade and has been a member of the Royals varsity team since the seventh grade. Following the workshop, the students attended a performance of “School of Rock” and, afterword, had the chance to meet with a Three Village alumnus David Ruttura, who is currently working as the associate director of the musical.

Moon Mission The complexity of the solar system recently became a little clearer for W.S. Mount Elementary School fifth-graders as they journeyed more than 70 years into the future and helped to save a theoretical space mission firsthand. During the live e-mission “Moon, Mars and Beyond,” the Three Village Central School District students made connections to their

classroom math, language arts and science lessons as they helped NASA locate and rescue a lost spaceship that was orbiting one of the outer planets. During the simulation, the students worked in planet teams to analyze and compute answers to a variety of mathematical questions. By examining different variables and making predictions, including how much

food, oxygen and water would be needed for the mission, the fifth-graders were able to successfully accomplish the rescue. In addition to tying into the school’s math and science curricula, the activity also allowed students to practice their reading skills, think critically and logically, and learn how to communicate effectively with teammates.

Band Aids Project W.S. Mount Elementary school second-grader Kayla Harte has been working to make a difference in her local community this winter by coordinating a buildingwide Band-Aid drive at her school. Earlier this year, Kayla was awarded a Disney Summer of Service grant through the Youth Service of America to support her community service project, titled “Friends for Child Life.” Through

this effort, Kayla focused on ways to improve the hospitalization experience for local sick children. As part of the drive, Kayla and her peers at Mount are donating hundreds of character themed bandages for use at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital. In addition to the drive, Kayla is also planning to help sponsor several birthday parties and special events for hospitalized children in the hospital’s

pediatric oncology department. Kayla was one of only 340 students across the nation to earn this grant, which is aimed at funding student projects geared toward making their communities healthier, greener and stronger as well as promote the importance of community service, awareness, advocacy and philanthropy.

In celebration of Black History Month, seventhgraders in Grant Connelly’s classes at Rocky Point Middle School helped blanket the school with information about some of the most influential African-Americans. As part of a research project, students selected

an individual from throughout American history and spent several class periods in the library learning about them. From their research, students created informative posters highlighting their societal and worldly contributions. Students shared these completed projects, which

featured such individuals as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks and Duke Ellington, with their classmates before helping to display the visual information boards around the building for all to learn and enjoy.

Setauket Elementary School students joined the American Heart Association’s Jump Rope for Heart initiative this winter, as they participated in a 10-station obstacle course in their physical education classes. The students jumped rope, as well as danced and navigated through

the different challenges as they worked to keep their hearts and bodies healthy. In addition to the health benefits for the event, the students also worked to raise funds to support the American Heart Association’s work. “It felt really great to help to raise funds knowing that they would help people

with sick hearts,” said firstgrader Lilly Rampone, who personally raised more than $200 by setting up a hot chocolate stand on her driveway. Annually, Setauket School raises between $5,000-$8,000 for the American Heart Association.

Fashioned after the hit television show, Minnesauke Elementary School sixth-graders recently used their creativity and artistic skills to compete in a “Chopped” art contest in their art classes. Broken into four teams, students worked together to use a basket of art supplies or “ingredients” and create artistic

masterpieces based on an established theme. They fashioned portraits out of paper and rubbing plates, created landscapes designs using various textures and made abstract paintings using canvas. After each round of design, one team was “chopped” and joined the team of judges to assess the remaining competitors throughout the rest of the

contest. According to art teacher Christine Sacco, teams were awarded points based on their successful use of all basket supplies, craftsmanship, creativity, visual aesthetic and teamwork. Only one team per class period was named the “Chopped Champion” but all left the lesson inspired. SPORTING ACCOMPLISHMENTS - The Port Jefferson Board of Education recognized the athletic accomplishments of two Earl L. Vandermeulen High School athletes at its meeting on February 14th. The students recognized with certificates, included varsity basketball player Courtney Lewis for scoring her 2000th point and Richard D’Elia for earning the Suffolk County Division II wrestling title at 106 pounds. to the semi-finals next month. Student business leaders from across Long Island won the top spots during an event held at Farmingdale State College and move on to compete at semi-finals hosted by

Seniors Advance The National Merit Scholarship Program has named Earl L. Vandermeulen High School seniors Xinyi Hong and Richard Liebert as finalists in its 2017 scholarship contest. Hong and Liebert are among 15,000 students to advance from a field of 16,000 candidates

based on their high PSAT scores. They now have the opportunity to compete for one of 7,600 National Merit scholarships, which will be offered in the spring. Hong is a member of her school’s Science Olympiad team, Environmental Club and National Honor Society. She is also a violist. Liebert is also a member of

the National Honor Society and Science Olympiad Team. He is additionally a member of the Robotics team, a violinist and a dancer. The Port Jefferson School District extends its congratulations to Xinyi Hong and Richard Liebert.

Prior to this year’s winter break, R.C. Murphy Junior High School’s Community Connections Club in the Three Village Central School District rolled up their sleeves and made 13 chicken potpies for local families in need. The students used their

culinary skills to prepare the delicious filling of cooked chicken, vegetables and spices, and then froze the mixture in a flakey piecrust for the receiving families to heat and enjoy at their leisure. Cooking instructions were included in the tasty

Nassakeag Elementary School first-graders partnered with sixthgraders in Judy Larsen’s class to create nearly 90 Valentine’s boxes for those serviced by the Interfaith Nutrition Network. For the initiative, the Three Village Central School District students

gathered shoeboxes and earned monetary donations by completing various chores at home. The funds were then used to purchase various sundries for both adults and children assisted by the INN. The Nassakeag students decorated and filled the shoeboxes with those
