Striking Again The New York State finals of the National Automotive Technology Competition were recently held at the Greater New York Automobile Dealers Association (GNYADA) Training Center in Whitestone. Eastern Long Island Academy of Applied Technology students from Ward Technical Center in Riverhead, also known as Team Mazda, captured second place. Students Ted Beach, Southold UFSD, and

After competing against nearly 600 seventh- and eighth-grade peers at their schools, Emily Bellow and Drake Eggleston were named the first-place winners during geography bees held at R.C Murphy

and P.J. Gelinas junior high schools, respectively. As school winners, the students took extensive geography examinations to determine their eligibility to compete in the next round of the competition.

This year’s state geography bee will be held in Albany, N.Y., in April followed by the national championship in Washington, D.C., in May.

Jeffrey Yac, Westhampton Beach UFSD, from Team Mazda, received a $1,000 GNYADA scholarship. Additionally, they were offered scholarships to New England Institute of Technology, UTI/ MMI/NASCAR Technical Institute, Ohio Technical College, and Lincoln Technical Institute. Each received a Snap-On threepiece plier set as well. Teams worked on a “bugged” vehicle and had to identify and repair all

problems. They also had to complete six work stations, including: professional interviewing, writing repair orders, electric and hybrid vehicle safety, performing an inspection, balancing tires, and troubleshooting an electronic circuit board. Team Subaru, represented by Francesco Nicotra and Eric Downs, both from Hampton Bays UFSD, also competed at the state competition.

Random Acts W.S. Mount Elementary School joined hundreds of schools and communities around the world in celebration of Random Acts of Kindness Week in February. Throughout the week, students and staff members participated in a number of activities geared toward spreading kindness throughout their school and community. Each class decorated a white heart to represent their commitment to perform acts of kindness, not only for the week ahead

but also continuously throughout their everyday lives. Additionally, students or staff members “caught” exhibiting an act of kindness had their good deeds highlighted on a smaller paper heart, which was affixed to a character education ribbon and displayed on classroom doors and hallways. Each day was each assigned a specific theme – from encouraging proper greetings and extending verbal or written thank yous, to reaching out and

doing something nice for others. The scheduled theme was specific to the week’s overarching message. The weeklong initiative also tied into literacy, as several reading materials that pertain to kindness and compassion were emphasized in reading lists. Lastly, speakers provided a quote of the day over the loud speaker to encourage acts of kindness as they applied to each day of the week.

Random Thoughts By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As if navigating the roads this winter wasn’t hazardous enough with the snow and ice and freezing rain, we now have a new obstacle to contend with – the vast wasteland of potholes cropping up on every corner and parkway ramp. Try attempting to slow down as your headlights catch a glimpse of the crater before you, just waiting to devour a tire or two. One more time – is it spring yet? At least spring training has finally arrived, and with it the not entirely unexpected announcement

from Yankee shortstop Derek Jeter that this season will be his final year playing baseball. A class act until the end, Jeter took to his Facebook page to write a heartfelt message of thanks and appreciation to his fans, his teammates, his family and friends. He will leave the Yankees at the top of his game, a surefire first-ballot Hall of Famer with a legacy the likes of which will not be seen again. Speaking of, remember all those long lost friends you thought you would never see again? Well, thanks to social networking, virtual reunions have become fairly

common. Sure, there’s plenty of useless material to navigate through; but if you learn to utilize these sites properly, the odds of reconnecting with someone are pretty likely. Everything in moderation, right? That’s the mentality you need to adopt for spring – moderation – with diet, exercise, everything. Those bathing suits that have been cropping up in every department store? They’re not going away anytime soon. Better crawl out of that winter state of hibernation and greet the brand new season right around the corner… it’s just over the horizon, past the potholes.

Assistant Professor of Communications and Faculty Advisor Christopher Holfester said, the Michael J. Grant Campus Speech and Debate Team has won three national championships and twice won the New York State Championship since 1999 and former team members are now college professors and attorneys. On February 16th, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. held its 1st Annual Give From The Heart Athletes for Alzheimer’s event at Steel Fitness Gym in Bellmore. The event raised over $5,000 for its programs that help those who suffer from Alzheimer’s Disease and their unpaid caregivers. Approximately 100 people participated in a daylong contest to determine who could perform the most sit-ups or push-ups in a given period of time. Dear Little Dollies,

a unique doll collectors shop in Bellmore, was the presenting sponsor for the event. Other groups and organizations in attendance included Molloy College, Kellenberg High School, and Nancy Burner & Associates. Volunteer coaches and Steel Fitness Gym trainers observed participants throughout the competition to ensure that the sit-ups and pushups were completed correctly and counted accurately. The competition was dedicated to the late Dorothy C. Camilleri, a

Bellmore resident who battled Alzheimer’s Disease for several years. Her husband, Louis, who is 89 years old, got out of his wheelchair and did one situp in honor of his late wife. All of the participants will continue to raise funds until June 30th in the hopes of reaching the target goal of $25,000. Arrowhead and Nassakeag Elementary School kindergarten students learned about the postal service in a handson way when they worked to create operational post offices in their classrooms. After discussing the importance of this national profession and how mail travels, students learned about the different responsibilities of the office workers. Programs at both

schools were coordinated around the Valentine’s Day holiday. In Rebecca D’Agostino’s class at Nassakeag, students became stamp sellers, letter carriers, sorters and office workers. Throughout the school day, the students would assume these roles and carry out numerous jobs to ensure their classmates Valentine’s cards were delivered on time.

At Arrowhead, classes made Valentine’s mailboxes that they used throughout the project. In Janice Connolly’s class, students practiced important writing lessons, including how to address an envelope and send letters home to their families. In their dramatic play area, Ms. Connolly set up a pretend post office for the students to make cards.

Athletes from 16 junior and community college men’s and women’s basketball teams will be featured at the 2013-2014 National Junior College Athletic Association Basketball Region 15 Championships hosted by Suffolk County Community College in Selden later this month. College teams representing Division I and III men and Division III women will take to the College’s Ammerman Campus Brookhaven Gym’s hardwood from February 28th to March 2nd. Suffolk County Community College last hosted the regional championships in 1995. “This is a tremendous opportunity for local basketball fans and the community to watch talented junior college athletes in action,” said Suffolk County Community College Athletic Director and Women’s Basketball Coach Kevin Foley. “And while they’re here for the games, they can see all that Suffolk has to offer: 22 different competitive teams in 14 sports,” Foley said. UNDEFEATED SEASON - Mount Sinai Varsity Cheerleaders had an undefeated LICCA season and took first place at finals and the UCA regional competition for their division. They proceeded on to the UCA Nationals in the Large Varsity Division 2 in Disney World Florida. There, they had the highest scores in their division for the Semifinals from their performance at Hollywood Studios. They went on to the Finals, which was held at ESPN Wide World of Sports, Florida, to become National Champions for the first time in the Mount Sinai history of Cheerleading.
