After discussing the importance of this national profession and how mail travels, students learned about the different responsibilities of the office workers. An Afternoon with Billy By: Jamie Lynn Ryan In all the hype over our dear Buddy the Betta’s first birthday last week, another momentous occasion got lost in the shuffle – my opportunity to attend an intimate Q&A with Billy Joel at my alma mater, C.W. Post. It was designed to give the students of the Long Island High School for the Arts an opportunity to learn from the master, one who happened to make a rather sizable donation to their school in an effort to keep it up and running for the next generation of promising performing artists. Of course, officially, I was “covering” this event in my capacity as a journalist; however, the opportunity
to be a part of such a small audience in front of one of my idols had its own unique appeal on a personal level – at the very institution where I obtained my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree over a decade ago. While not a full-fledged concert by any means, there was “a little music” to go along with the anecdotes, making for an afternoon of memories to last a lifetime. In the weeks since, I had occasion to peruse my college portfolio, where I came across an essay I had written on the hopes and aspirations I had for my career. “Countdown to Commencement,” it was called, covering everything from grad school to loans to the job search to that endless search for fulfillment.
As much as anyone thinks he/she has life all mapped out, it is nearly impossible to rely on a set blueprint. Because, every now and then, life itself beckons, with all its unanticipated twists and turns. Such was my sentiment in the Spring of 2004, and so it remains. If you had told me 12 years ago that I would be back in the Tilles Center theatre, as an editor and columnist, mere feet away from the likes of Billy Joel… well that would have fallen under the “unanticipated” category for sure. I can only imagine the thrill it was for those high school students, those with the world at their feet, endless opportunities stretched before them. Oh, to have that feeling once again…

Help Kids Feel Comfortable at the Dentist Parents may be unaware of the dental health timeline, or they could be reluctant to bring their children for fear of how their kids will behave - especially if parents are harboring their own apprehensions about the dentist. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that a child go to the dentist by age 1, or within six months of the eruption of his or her first tooth. Parents worried about how their kids will respond to the dentist can take the following steps to acclimate kids to dental visits to make them more comfortable during their appointments now and down the road: Be a positive role model. Children frequently learn by example. If they see their parents being diligent about dental care, they’re more likely to embrace proper oral hygiene. Bring children to your own dental appointments so they understand the process and become familiar with the type of equipment used. Routine dental examinations and cleanings are an important component of oral healthcare for both children and adults. However, many children do not visit the dentist until well after the time recommended by medical and dental professionals.
Stick to the first-tooth milestone. Take your child to the dentist on or about when his or her first tooth erupts. Early dental visits will get kids used to going to the dentist and prevent minor problems that may lead to more complex
dental issues. Read books about the dentist and role play. Information can allay kids’ fears about the dentist. Read books together about dental visits and act out possible scenarios with your kids. Give kids toy dental health tools and have them practice exams on you and vice-versa. Be supportive and instill trust. Avoid telling your child that everything will be okay. If a procedure is needed, this could affect his or her trust in you and make the dental office an even greater source of anxiety. Simply be supportive and offer a hand to squeeze or a hug if your child needs you. Consider using your dentist. Some parents like to take their children to a pediatric dentist, but it may not always be necessary. Many family practices cater to patients of all ages, and the familiarity of the office may help make children feel more comfortable. Speak with your dentist about the ages they see. Steer clear of negative words. Michael J. Hanna, DMD, a national spokesperson for the AAPD, suggests using positive phrases like “clean, strong, healthy teeth” to make the visit seem fun and positive rather than scary and alarming. Let the office staff come up with their own words to describe processes that won’t seem too frightening. Making a Difference A number of area high school seniors will be given a break on college costs, as the Long Island credit union NEFCU kicks off its annual Making a Difference Family Scholarship program that will award up to 12 students with at least $1,000 toward a college scholarship. The Westbury-based credit union will begin accepting applications from high school seniors February 25. The deadline
for applications is April 29, with the winners announced in mid-June. Those applying must have a four-year overall GPA of 90 or above, and have dedicated a minimum of 50 hours toward community service work and projects. The program is open to any high school senior who is a NEFCU member or has a parent/guardian who is a member. Anyone who lives or works on Long Island
can become a NEFCU member with just a $5 deposit. The application requirement includes an essay, an unofficial school transcript and documented proof of community service. “We’re all too familiar with the rising cost of education, and this is just one way we’re helping ease some of the financial burden for our members,” said Valerie Garguilo, vice president of marketing and community relations

Good Shepherd Hospice announced today that it received a $25,000 Grief Reach grant from the New York Life Foundation. The Neurosurgical Intensive Care Unit (NSCU) at North Shore University Hospital (NSUH) has received the Silver Beacon Award for Excellence from the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN). NSUH is one of just 18 hospitals with critical care units in New York State and the only one in the tri-state area to receive this prestigious recognition. “I’m very excited to have the NSCU recognized on a national level for the excellent care provided by our staff,” said Laura Iacono, RN, the unit’s nurse manager. “This is a testament to their dedication, professionalism and the extraordinary patient care delivered to each patient every day. Vandermeulen High School girls’ varsity soccer team’s Class C State Championship, New York State Senator Kenneth LaValle presented each player with a proclamation during a ceremony on February 11th. “Saying that you ladies did a spectacular job may be an understatement,”

The National Merit Scholarship Program has named Earl L. Vandermeulen High School senior Eric Kilgore
as a finalist in its 2016 scholarship contest. Kilgore is among 15,000 students to advance from a field of 16,000 candidates
based on his high PSAT score. He now has the opportunity to compete for one of 7,600 National Merit scholarships, which will be offered in the spring. Kilgore is a member of his school’s Science Olympiad, Academic and Mathlete teams. He is also a member of the Latin Club and earned a perfect score on his last two National Latin exams. Behind the Scenes Members of the P.J. Gelinas Junior High School music department recently had the chance to go behind the scene of a running Broadway music during the school’s annual trip to New York City. To gain a better insight into the theatrical world, students and teachers
took part in an official Broadway Stage Combat Workshop. Here, the group learned from Broadway fight choreographers how stage combat works during a live performance. Then they were fully engaged in a question and answer session with two of the ensemble members of
Broadway’s “Finding Neverland.” Among the aspects discussed were auditioning, casting and rejection. Following the workshop, the group enjoyed lunch at Planet Hollywood and then a performance of “Finding Neverland” on Broadway.
Arrowhead, Minnesauke and Nassakeag Elementary School students recently worked on three separate community service projects designed to make the Valentine’s Day holiday a happy one for less fortunate individuals. In celebration of the holiday, Arrowhead kindergarten students created hand-made cards for the veterans living at the Long Island State Veterans Home in Stony Brook. They worked individually and collaboratively with their teachers to make approximately 70 cards. The veterans
were appreciative of the delivery and have indicated an interest in penning response letters back to the classes. Minnesauke sixthgraders in Patricia Woods’ class teamed up with the first-graders in Jennifer Frole’s class to create 80 goodie bags for residents at a local assisted living complex. The two classes filled the bags with various toiletry items and created Valentines for each recipient. Nassakeag first-graders in Joan Sperry’s class worked with their buddies in Judy Larsen’s sixth-
grade class to create Valentines boxes for those serviced by the Interfaith Nutrition Network (INN). For the initiative, students gathered shoeboxes and earned monetary donations by completing various chores at home. The funds were then used to purchase various sundries for both adults and children assisted by the INN. The Nassakeag students decorated and filled the shoeboxes with those items, preparing them for delivery right before the holiday. In total, they created 50 boxes for adults and 12 for children.

The complex subject of animal hibernation and winter weather is the center of a recent project in Cathy Conner’s class at Frank J. Carasiti Elementary School. With the help of a papiermache, students created a
classroom cave for several stuffed animals. After fashioning the structure, students painted and decorated the cave before placing the animals inside for the winter. The class discussed the importance of this action and how a
sign of spring is when these animals begin to wake. Inside the structure is a variety of species, including a sleeping bear, snake, turtle, bats, a raccoon, frog and chipmunk.

circulatory system a series of learning centers. Throughout the month of February, students rotated through six interactive stations to study such things as circulatory vocabulary,

Rocky Point Researchers experimentation in the sciences, engineering and mathematics at the high school level. Both were selected as semifinalists at this year’s JSHS after submitting research papers, and were invited to present their work at York College this February. Jade’s research project
was “Can Magnetic Fields be used to Shield Astronauts from Cosmic Radiation?” and Kyle’s project was “The Effect of Shielding Material on Cosmic Ray Interference.” This is the first time Rocky Point students have submitted to the contest.

Delivering Lessons Nassakeag Elementary School kindergarten students in Rebecca D’Agostino’s class learned about the postal service in a hands-on way when they created an operational post office in their classroom. After discussing the importance of this national
profession and how mail travels, students learned about the different responsibilities of the office workers. Then, during the week leading up to Valentine’s Day, students had the chance to fulfill the various roles, including stamp sellers,
letter carriers, sorters and office workers. Throughout the school day, students would assume these roles and carry out numerous jobs to ensure their classmates’ Valentine’s Day cards were delivered on time.

Random Acts To mark Random Acts of Kindness Week, students at Port Jefferson Middle School participated in kindness activities. During the week of February 9th, students watched videos about the initiative and focused on how students can make a
difference by simply being kind. Students were then encouraged to become ‘secret agents’ and post kind quotes on their peers’ lockers throughout the week. Students were also emboldened to post kind words and compliments on a “Kindness Begins
with You” bulletin board displayed in the school’s main hallway as well as create kindness posters and hand out paper smiles. Additionally, throughout the week, students collected toiletries for the homeless.

Healthy Habits to Combat Stress asked more than 3,000 participants about their issues with stress. Sixty-four percent said money was a somewhat or very significant source of stress, and that number was even higher for parents (77 percent). Survey respondents also noted that work is a significant source of stress. Few adults can imagine a life that does not include financial- or work-related stress. But there are ways to combat stress that can benefit people’s longterm health and improve their presentday quality of life.
Stress has an immediate and potentially long-term effect on the human body. Though it’s a natural response to both good and bad experiences, stress, when chronic, can produce a host of negative consequences that greatly diminish one’s quality of life. Combatting stress can sometimes be difficult, as the causes of stress are never too far away for many adults. In its 2015 “Stress in AmericaTM: Paying With Our Health” survey, the American Psychological Association found that money is the top cause of stress for Americans. The survey was conducted on behalf of the APA by Harris Poll, which
